“The standard you walk past is the

standard you accept.” - David Morrison

Principal’s Desk

Welcome to Week 8 of the Term. As you read this week’s newsletter I am certain all community members have many questions to ask in these uncertain times linked to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The information in today’s newsletter is current as of the time of publication Tuesday (17 March). I encourage all community members to refer to our School Facebook Page and website for up to date information.

COVID-19 Health Care and Hygiene

The NSW Department of Education is introducing proactive measures to limit the impact of COVID-19 in our schools. Our schools have adopted social distancing measures including cancelling assemblies, excursions, travel, some events and conferences.

All major arts, sports and initiative activities and events will temporarily be ceased until further notice. This includes whole-school sporting events and inter-school events involving three or more schools.

Current advice from the Australian Government is:

All travellers to Australia will be required to self-isolate for 14 days.

A ban on cruise liners from foreign ports arriving at Australian ports for 30 days.

Any confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded until they are medically cleared to return.

Close contacts of a confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded for 14 days since last contact with the confirmed case.

Students and staff who have returned to Australia and have shown no symptoms during the 14-day home-isolation period are able to return to school or work.

NSW Health has processes in place to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in Australia. A close contact is a person who has spent significant time either face to face (15 minutes) or in an enclosed space (2 hours or more) as someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. It is advising these close contacts about not attending work, school or early childhood and childcare services.

The Department of Education continues to work closely with NSW Health to monitor and respond to developments and to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students and staff.

Consistent with current guidelines, children, students and staff who are unwell with respiratory illness should remain at home until symptoms resolve. In accordance with our current practice if any student becomes unwell we will implement our infection control guidelines and follow the advice provided by NSW Health as appropriate.

For more information, visit the NSW Health Website

Health advice for our schools

The best way to protect yourself from COVID-19 is the same way you would protect yourself from catching flu or other respiratory illnesses.

1. Wash your hands

Clean your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based sanitiser with at least 60% alcohol.

Page 3: NEWSLETTER - Home - Telegraph Point Public School · NEWSLETTER Telegraph Point Public School 177 Mooney Street, Telegraph Point NSW 2441 Ph: 02 6585 0224 Email: telegrappt-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au

Website: www.telegrappt-p.schools.nsw.edu.au Facebook: facebook.com/TPPS2441

2. Cough etiquette

Cover your sneeze or cough with your elbow or with a tissue (and dispose of it immediately). Avoid close contact with people who are ill. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

3. Stay home if you are sick

If your child is unwell with a respiratory illness they should remain at home until symptoms clear up.

School Photos

School Photos will take place on Wednesday 25 March 2020.

Friday Assemblies - POSTPONED

Friday Assemblies have been postponed due to strategies being implemented linked to the COVID-19 Pandemic. We will inform the community when a new date is set to reconvene school assemblies.

Bus Lines and School Pick up

To ensure the safety of all students going home at the end of the day, we ask that all students who catch the bus sit down in their bus lines as soon as the bell rings.

Similarly, all students who are getting picked up by their parents/caregivers we ask that they also sit down in their allocated line as soon as the bell goes. Parents are asked to pick up their child from the ‘pick up’ line on their way out of the school.

This will assist the teaching staff to fulfil their duty of care obligations ensuring that all students arrive home safely. Your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Harmony Day and the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA)

Friday 20 March 2020 Telegraph Point Public School will celebrate both Harmony Day and the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA). Students will be encouraged to wear ORANGE.

National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA).

Australian schools will stand united in their communities to celebrate the eighth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA).The National Day of Action is Australia’s key anti-bullying event for schools and in 2020, schools are called to imagine a world free from bullying and share their BIG IDEAS.

Harmony Day

Our diversity makes Australia a great place to live. Harmony Day is a celebration of our cultural diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home.

The message of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’, the day aims to engage people to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster sense of belonging for everyone.

Opening of Parliament

Last week’s assembly this saw our Parliamentarians and Sport Captains inducted into their leadership positions and the ‘Opening of Parliament’. During the ‘Opening of Parliament’ each class presented a notice of motion, which was debated in parliament. All motions passed and will now head to the ‘Senate’. The motions include:

Kindergarten – More handballs to play with

1 C – To purchase portable soccer goals for the K-2 students

2 J – To have a Ninja Course at school

3/4 – To have interest groups this year

4/5 – To have a shade sail over the tennis court

5/6 – To have a fun day organised by Year 6 for the school to raise money for a Year 6 gift.

Parking and School Pick Up and Drop Off

The beginning and end of the school day are busy times for pedestrians and drivers outside schools. Given the changes in the parking and bus zones around our school it is a timely reminder that you can help keep children safe by remembering the following:

drop your child off and pick them up on the school side of the road

never call out to them from across the road - it is very dangerous

always take extra care in 40km school zones

follow all parking signs - these help keep your child as safe as possible

park responsibly even if it means you have to walk further to the school gate

never double park - it is illegal and puts children at risk

never do a U-turn or a three point turn outside the school as it puts children at risk of harm

model safe and considerate pedestrian and driver behaviours to your child

always give way to pedestrians particularly when entering and leaving driveways.

Communication

From time to time, an issue may arise with your child whilst at school. If this happens, please do not approach other students at school. It is appropriate to communicate any concerns you may have with the classroom teacher, Ms Anna Hoelzl - Assistant Principal or myself.

SMART Learning Goals

Over the next two weeks, our class teachers will have individual time with each student to discuss their SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound) learning goals for the rest of this term. Students will identify specific areas in their English and Mathematical learning where they would like to improve. These informal, guided conversations are significant in assisting students to develop a deeper understanding of themselves as a learner and identify the steps they need to take in order to achieve their set goals. This process is important and powerful in supporting students to take ownership of their learning journey.

Uniform Shop

Belinda Isherwood is the contact for the uniform shop. To contact Belinda throughout the week please do so

through the front office.

Library Van

Due to our increasing student numbers, this year the Library Van will provide a service for Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students only. Library Van dates for Term 1 include:

Friday 3 April

Breakfast Club is now on Wednesdays

Breakfast Club will continue this year and will operate on Wednesday mornings. Mrs Kerrie Robb - School Learning Support Officer will assist parent volunteers in its functioning. Breakfast Club is open to all students from 8.30am onwards.

Crunch ‘n Sip

Once again Telegraph Point Public School is a ‘Crunch ‘n Sip’ school. This means that all students from K-6 are asked to bring fresh fruit and or vegetables to eat during the morning session. This is a great way to promote healthy eating and set positive life-long habits. Easy ideas are grapes, carrots, apples, capsicum, watermelon or cherry tomatoes.

School Visitors

Just a reminder that all visitors to the school, including parents picking up their children, must report to the office. In most cases the office staff will send for the student reducing the amount of disruption to teaching and also monitoring who is on the school site. This is a security and Health and Safety requirement and we appreciate your help in this matter.

Medical Information

The school is also updating our student’s medical information and updating any health care plans.

We welcome information from parents about your child's health, even if you are not requesting specific support from our school. Our school asks for medical information when you enrol your child. It is also important that you let us know if your child’s health care needs change or if a new health condition develops.

Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes and other health care related issues (including prior conditions such as medical procedures in the last 12 months) should be provided to the school by parents. Please provide this information in writing to the principal. This will greatly assist our school in planning to support your child’s health and wellbeing.

Please also remember to notify staff in the school office of any changes to your contact details or to the contact details of other people nominated as emergency contacts.

We appreciate your assistance in this regard and assure you that any information you provide the school will be stored securely and will only be used or disclosed in order to support your son or daughter’s health needs or as otherwise required by law.

School Enews

We are looking forward to another great year. As always, we expect each term to be very busy, full of wonderful opportunities for our students. I encourage all families to read the newsletter each fortnight as this is our primary means of communicating with you and informing you of school events. If you have not previously registered for School Enews, please do so as soon as possible. It is an easy process and will allow you to receive the newsletter and notes via email or app. Details on how to register are included in this newsletter.

School Hats

Please remind your child to bring their school hat for recess and lunch. It is far too hot to be outside without a hat and children without a hat will be asked to sit under the shelter during playtimes. The school has appropriate hats in stock if you need to purchase one.

Financial Assistance

Please remember that if you require financial assistance to help pay for any school activity this year, to come and see me. We have a number of ways in which to help and please rest assured, all details are kept totally confidential. We would like to see all students involved in our planned activities and if finance is a problem please make contact.

I am looking forward to meeting with you and discussing the educational needs of your children and

working together to provide a quality education for all students at Telegraph Point Public School.
