Dear Parents/Carers
As we start the run up to Christmas, it is worth reflecting
on the donations to charity that students and their families
have so willingly given. We have supported Children in
Need (£424 raised) and Dunstable Food Bank (1000 items
of food collected). During December all five Houses are
collecting spare change for Present Aid, which allows the
students in each house to buy items of their choice to
support refugees across the world. It is heartening to see
the Academy Vision, ‘Living well together with dignity,
faith and hope’, truly in action!
Year 11 students have made a good start with the first of
their mock exam sessions. Students revised hard and have
fed back to staff that they would like more advice and
support with revision techniques. As a result of this, we are
putting together a package of both internal and external
support that will help them prepare for the next mock
session which will take place after Christmas (Week
commencing 9th January). I know as parents and carers you
will continue to support them as they begin to become
independent learners, identifying for themselves where
they need to focus their efforts.
Around the Academy we now are asking students to ‘self-
regulate’ their uniform and behaviour. This means they do
not rely on staff constantly reminding them, but take
ownership for their own appearance and behaviour. As the
Academy introduces more opportunities for the students, I
was thrilled at the weekend to hear about the success of
our Young Enterprise students. The seven Year 12 students
won the Best Product award and were also Overall Winners
of the Bedford Trade Fair event. These young men are
excellent role models for all of the students within the
Academy and demonstrate the high aspirations we have for
students and staff alike.
As the temperature plummets please remind your children
of the need to travel carefully into the Academy, whether
walking or riding bikes. With Best Wishes,
Liz Furber Principal

From the Chair of Governors
At the Bedford Trade Fair, teams from schools
around the county (usually Year 12 students), set up
a stall in the centre of Bedford to sell/promote the
product/service they are working on as part of the
Young Enterprise programme. They are required to
be there for seven hours and persuade passing trade
to take an interest in their product. Part of the
process involves a competitive element because
there is also an official judging element to the day. I
am delighted to report that the team from All Saints,
Xenon Concepts, won the Best Product Award and
were the Overall Winners.
I am hoping that they will now attend the very large
Milton Keynes Trade Fair on 29th January and then
take part in the competitive stages to find the overall
County Champions who will represent Bedfordshire
at the Regional Finals at Robinson College,
Cambridge on 20th June 2017.
Many, many thanks to Michelle Watt in her recently
created role of being lead teacher for character
building; she has put in a 12-hour Saturday to
support our students. Congratulations to these fine
young men who will be excellent role models for our
younger students and great ambassadors for the
Academy.

Year 11 Geography Field Visit
On 30th September, we took 25 intrepid Geographers
from Year 11 to the Norfolk coast to actively revise the
coastal landscapes topic and enjoy a range of
challenging outdoor activities.
The students all tried their hand at advanced
fieldwork techniques and developed their knowledge
of coastal features, process and management which
will no doubt help them as they work towards their
final exams this year.
During the trip we gave out over 250 achievement
points to the students who constantly impressed us
with their geographical knowledge and teamwork.
We would like to give special mentions to Kai Linney,
Katie Jenkin and Adam England who all particularly
impressed us with their leadership skills over the
weekend.

Sixth Form Mock Examinations
Students in Sixth Form will sit mock
examinations in the week commencing 12th
December 2016. Mock examinations are an
excellent opportunity for students to
experience a true reflection of their A Level
assessment conditions. If students have any
questions about the expectations of a mock
examination they should speak to their class
teacher in the first instance. Students will
receive the results of their mock examinations
following the Christmas break.

Intervention Timetable for Sixth Form
An intervention timetable is now in place for Sixth Form
students and I am pleased to see a great turn out to
these sessions. Students are directed to attend sessions
by their teachers and form tutor. I recommend that
these opportunities for personalised support are taken
up early in the academic year to put students in good
stead for success in the summer. English subject
support will be arranged on a one-to-one basis,
bookable with class teachers.

Exam and Revision Skills
Workshop for Year 11.
We are happy to announce that we are going to
ensure all Year 11 students have a full day
workshop, led by an external provider (Learning
Performance) on Tuesday 13th December
which focuses on delivering a range of tools and
strategies that will help to prepare our students
for revising efficiently and being fully prepared
for their exams.
Attendance to Period 6 Intervention.
I would like to take this opportunity to praise the
many students who are showing themselves to be
conscientious, hardworking and highly motivated.
The numbers of students who are attending Period
6 sessions is great to see. We are expecting 100%
attendance to the compulsory targeted sessions
and we do have a minority who are not yet taking
advantage of these additional support sessions.
Students who have been regularly attending, have
seen their efforts pay off in recent examinations
and results. Many Year 11 students who attend
Period 6 have achieved excellent AP2 Mock Exam
results. This is testament to how a student can
improve their levels with a positive attitude and
some extra effort.
Andy O’Rourke
Mock Results – Assessment Point 2.
November saw our Year 11 students take part in Mock
Exams which follow the same practices as their ‘real’
exams in June. Students were given an exam timetable
outlining the subject, times and location for each exam
and the exams themselves took place under strict exam
conditions that mirror the expectations for the June
exams. Mock exams give students the experience of
sitting exams and allow us to give students support and
intervention, where necessary, to build their subject
knowledge and confidence in their own ability so that
they can achieve the best possible outcomes. The mock
exam results formed part of our latest assessment point
and the overall results for students has improved since
the last assessment point. Students should use the
results and feedback that they have received from their
teachers to make the most of the final few months
before their exams.
Parent & Student Workshops
We are organising an evening at the Academy to
ensure that parents and carers are involved in the
forthcoming revision programme. There will be a
short presentation and then families are free to go
and visit Curriculum Leaders and subject teachers
will be providing key resources, ideas and guidance
on revision techniques and exam skills. Dates and
further details to follow.
Core subject intervention
Science, English and Maths
We are set to commence with
an additional set of daily
interventions and support
sessions that will run during
a.m registration. These will
focus on supporting 34 year 11
students. These are to be led
by Curriculum Leaders in each
of the core subjects.

I really enjoyed the rugby trip
to Coventry for the 4 nations
and it was a really good
atmosphere and an even better
experience. The games were: England VS Scotland
followed by New Zealand VS Australia.
I thought seeing England winning was good
because they are representing us and even
though Scotland lost it was such a great game
with amazing hits. The New Zealand VS Australia
was also a good game and seeing the Haka was
also awesome. I thought Australia started the
game strong and in the last 10 minutes New
Zealand finished the strongest getting forward
more and getting a try, they then made another
good attack but the try was disallowed. Also thank
you Mr. O'Rourke for setting the trip up!

On the 5th of November we went to the Ricoh arena to watch
Scotland vs England and New Zealand vs Australia. England
managed to come back against Scotland in the second half and
Australia vs New Zealand was a different class. It was a great
night with some great tries and tackles and was fun to watch.

“FOUR NATIONS” RUGBY Achievement Reward
On 5th November we
attended the four nations in
Coventry at the Ricoh Arena.
We watched two games, England v
Scotland & New Zealand v Australia.
We saw England beat Scotland 38-12. We also
saw Australia beat New Zealand 14-8; this was a
very close game and you could feel the tension in
the stadium build. It was a good trip that everyone
who went enjoyed.

Selected students in Year 11 have
been invited to take part in an
achievement and motivation project
over the course of the last few
months. The winning team of three
students were able to attend the Four
Nations Rugby tournament at the
Ricoh Arena, Coventry. Here, they
share their thoughts about the visit.
Growth Mindset
Have you ever had a day where you just feel that
you are not good enough, that everyone
is better than you and you are feeling
a bit of a failure? Then it just might
be that you need to talk to some
of our year 7, 8 and 9 students for
a lesson on growth mind set.
Since September, our students have
been exploring their own mind sets
during their learning to learn lessons .
They are understanding how that little negative
voice needs to be quietened so that they can start
to see themselves as work in progress, and
understand that making mistakes means they are
learning. This takes resilience, which our students
are beginning really understand and apply to all
their lessons.
For this half of term we are exploring how to work
collaboratively which will test their resilience
through being set a variety of team building tasks,
while continuing to develop their knowledge of
their growth mind set. As you can see from the
picture below this is proving to be an exciting way
of working. In the next newsletter I hope to share
with you the results of their next project, ‘Google
20%’ which will be an opportunity to apply the skills
acquired so far.

Interactive Teaching
The Academy is moving towards Good and better
teaching and learning for our students. This has
been confirmed by external visitors who have
stated that our students are ready to
become more active learners. To this end
our teachers will continue to deliver
lessons which:
• is Differentiated
• is Active and which promote independence
• is Planned in order to demonstrate progress
• Provides a high degree of appropriate challenge.
• Acts on feedback from students.
Throughout the remainder of this term and into the
Spring term our ‘6Ms’ will continue to be used to
outline our basic expectations for effective learning;
Meet All students are greeted at the door
Manage Seating plans establish routines so that
learning can begin promptly
Model Respect for all is modelled in every
lesson.
Motivate Ensure a positive approach and
message is conveyed through learning
activities.
Maintain High standards of presentation are
maintained across all learning activities.
Monitor Students are included in the monitoring
of progress. Detailed feedback is
provided by the teacher and acted upon
by the students
Thank you for your continued support and please
ensure that your children are equipped and
motivated for learning and are prepared to begin
the Spring term with renewed vigour.

Feedback from our Gifted &Talented interviews have
been extremely positive. We focused on reflecting on
enrichment days and SMSC provision. Students found
several tasks challenging and have identified areas
where we need to increase the level of challenge.
Students have thoroughly enjoyed all three
enrichment days, with Halloween and
Christmas being neck and neck as their
favourite. Evident from all of the
interview groups was the desire to
learn more about other cultures,
inclusive of their festivals,
celebrations and other religious
rituals. I find this thirst to develop
their social awareness incredibly
humbling and look forward to
seeing Academy staff incorporate
this into our further enrichment day
planning. Thank you to those students
who took part.

Year 7 G & T Reading Club
A group of students in Year 7 have had the
opportunity to meet weekly since the beginning of
November and discuss books, genres and themes
relating to their favourites stories as well as discuss
exciting new short stories. We have just completed
reading “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard
Connell, and are expanding to share excerpts from
different genres!
Any other Year 7 students that wish to join us

Students in Years 7-9 have been meeting since
the beginning of November through a love of a
range of writing styles. Students are currently
drafting pieces to participate in the Young
Writer’s creative writing competition for the end
of December. The theme of the competition is a
mini- saga: writing a story in no more than 100
words! We are currently working towards
adding detail that gives imagery to the reader,
writing under a word-count restriction, including
higher level vocabulary and punctuation for
effect.
Any new students are always welcome and we
meet Mondays from 3.00pm-4.00pm. Please see

English GCSE Revision
In English Year 11s have been working hard on exam skills and have just completed their
Literature - Paper 2.
As a reminder, the set texts for literature are:
An Inspector Calls
Romeo and Juliet
A Christmas Carol
Poems from the AQA Anthology: Power & Conflict
Please help your son/daughter by encouraging them to read the texts at home regularly,
(either with their own copy or one that is borrowed from the library or downloaded from the
internet). They need to make notes on characters, themes and ideas, as well as practise
answering exam questions.
There are also GCSE AQA revision guides on sale for both language and literature for £2.75
which is half the cost of the book if you were to buy it online. Students can use these to work
independently, to revise the main ideas in their own time and also to help with exam
techniques, such as how to structure essays.
The novel we are revising in class at the moment is , ‘A Christmas Carol’.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT,
BEHAVIOUR & WELFARE
During the course of this term, students
have been working on “self-regulation”.
This means that they modify their
behaviours without significant prompting.
This is an important stage in
our development of
behaviour management.
Over 96% Attendance
Our aspiration target is 96%. During
this half term, we have started
rewarding every form group who
achieve over 96% attendance on a
weekly basis. This is our
“aspirational” target. The groups
who have achieved this so far are:-
7MWA

Attendance Matters
Parents and Carers are asked make sure that they have the correct start
date for next term in calendars and diaries. We return to the Academy on
FRIDAY 6th JANUARY at the normal time. In line with Local Authority
policy, we do not authorise term time holidays and there is a clear
expectation that every student will attend for every day that they are well
and able to.

Attendance
Good school attendance is key to success in any school year
but attendance in Year 11 is crucial not only for academic
success but also for post 16 options.
The registration certificate showing the students attendance,
late marks and absences will be used to support college and
apprenticeship applications, not forgetting that School is
normally the first contact when applying for your first job.
Attendance targets are 95% and above, and for students to
have the best possible opportunities they need to be able to
demonstrate that their school attendance was around the
national average and they can arrive regularly on time.
Please support us by ensuring your child attends school and
arrives promptly .

Inclusion
The Inclusion Unit provides a school within
a school experience for students. It allows
some students the opportunity to spend a
proportion of their time away from
mainstream education without leaving the
Academy.
Students might be in the Inclusion Unit
because they have an injury, because they
need to stretch to reach top grades or
because they are experiencing difficulties
with their studies.
The Inclusion Unit has been up and
running for a term now . It is run by Miss

support we will contact you to explain
changes to their timetables and the reason
for the referral.

Bike Registration Scheme
We are very proud that All Saints Academy have one
of the highest bike to school records in the region and
a quick look at our cycle racks on site will show just
how popular biking to school is.
We are also aware, however, that we have a duty to
ensure that all our cyclists are safe on site and in the
local community and so we will shortly be writing to
parents asking that any student who travels to school
by bicycle registers as a cycle user. Registration will
help us to monitor cycle use and cycle safety on site
and will also help us provide additional support and
education where unsafe cycling is taking place.
From 1st January 2017, only registered cycle users will
be able to bring their bikes into the Academy
premises, so please make sure that you register
promptly even if you are only an occasional user.

Seventy two students from Year 10 attended this
year's Skills Show at the Birmingham NEC. This show
provides an excellent opportunity for students to
discover the world of skill based employment with
everything from Robotics to Fashion, ICT to Music

We would like to thank all students for their
exemplary behaviour and enthusiasm on this
important school visit. As we work towards
developing careers knowledge and understanding,
this is an important visit to take part in.

Uniform Update
We are generally very pleased with the standard of
uniform as it is worn by the majority of our
students. As we enter the wet winter weather,
students are reminded that shoes (not boots) must be
worn and that coats should be stored in lockers or
bags during the day. We have written to a number of
families asking that students do not have nail
extensions or gels during term time as these are
inappropriate for school. Nail glue and nail polish are
inappropriate items and must not be brought into the
Academy. As always, we remind you that facial
piercings are not permitted in the Academy and
should only be undertaken if removal can be
guaranteed for January 6th 2017.

New Look Ties
You will have noticed our new look branding on our
website, in our prospectuses and now in our
newsletter. We are moving our rebranding on a
little further by adjusting some aspects of the
school uniform.
As a first stage, we are in the process of ensuring
that every student is provided with a clip on tie.
These are proven to be both smarter and more
practical for students. They avoid debates about
the "correct length" of ties and ensure that
students do not have to deal with tricky knots when
they pull their ties the wrong way. As we are
providing new ties for all students, we are also
looking at a design which incorporates house
colours and increases the sense of community
identity for students.

All Saints Academy—We
Remember
Our Act of Remembrance took place
on 11th November with the whole
Academy family gathered around the hub.
Following readings from Year 7 Head Girl, Charlotte
Preston and Sixth Form Head Girl, Shannon Stack,
wreaths were laid by Form Group Prefects.
Raymond x, who is a long-standing member of the
Salvation Army joined us to play The Last Post and
Reveille and Sixth Form student Shaweer Noorah
started and ended the 2 minute silence by blowing
an authentic war time whistle while appearing in
full period military dress. The silence was deeply
respectful and students and staff left the Act of
Remembrance to the accompaniment of Elgar’s
“Nimrod” and a cascade of poppies from the ceiling.
falling from the ceiling.
Houghton Regis Remembrance
Georgia Roberts, Olivia Coleman and Alex Lee
represented the Academy at the Remembrance
service in Houghton Regis.
Georgia and Olivia proudly wore their Cadet uniforms
and as they laid the wreath, supported by Alex, it was
a moment I’m sure they will remember.
It was heart-warming to see our community
represented by all of the local schools .

Poppies
In November last year a number of Year7
students expressed a wish to develop their
art skills and produce a school display piece;
so the plan to recreate Paul Cummins and
Tom Piper’s ceramic poppy field at the
Tower of London for Remembrance Day
began. Since then the poppies have been
developed as a collaborative piece by staff
and students across the school in the
ceramics after school club overseen by the
specialist expertise of Jane Franklin. We
were particularly proud of the poppies
produced by Yr6 in their taster sessions
with Jane, Miss McVeigh and Mrs Granger;
proving that a positive sense of purpose
was the biggest asset to producing an art
piece worthy of commemorating those who
lost their lives in times of conflict. The
whole of the C&D Faculty took great pride
in unveiling the poppy field for students to
observe on their walk into school on Friday
11th; and in turn to observe the number of
students pause and reflect with solemnity.
Sales of the profits raised £300 for the
charity Help for Heroes. We hope to
expand and develop their field next year.

Save the Children Christmas Jumpers
Christmas Jumper Day will be held on Friday 16th
December with staff and students invited to wear
their Christmas Jumpers as part of their school

Students wishing to take part will need to bring in
£1 on the day, with money going to ‘Save the

go towards preventing children around the world
dying before their fifth birthday from preventable
diseases and will improve the lives and educations
of thousands living in third world countries.

Children In Need was marked once again with students
invited to wear non-uniform and donate £1 to wear
something spotty, or something blue to mark anti-

some modelling blue spots and many other dressing to
impress. In total we have raised £424, inclusive of a

which several tutor groups took part in. Well done to
7ZBR who guessed 786 smarties – the closest to the
correct answer of 821.

presentation on poaching of endangered animals
and a still life workshop was set up for students to
see the impact of illegal trafficking of animals and
their furs/bones through the zoos collection of
seized good from customs police. Students
represented the school to a high degree; staff voiced
their positive interactions with the students and
how ‘respectful and well behaved’ they were on

Student Voice
Student Voice over the last term has been working
hard on many fundraising ideas and events. One of
which we are most proud of is successfully raising 976
meals to support Dunstable foodbank. In addition to
this we raised £33 through selling Anti-bulling wrist
bands and this money is going to an Anti-bulling
charity ‘Ditch the Label’ which supports victims of
bullying. Furthermore Student Voice has recently
recruited new members, so we are very happy to
welcome, Niamh, James, Jazmine, Savannah to the
team. We’d also like to extend big congratulations to
Arron Barry for being promoted to Deputy Sectary!
Initiations have been given to Year reps who we hope
will join us at our next meeting to add their valuable
contributions. We are still open to having more
students join the team; we have meetings every
Wednesday at 1:30 in Room 0036, so why not come
and join the team?”

Support Our Community
Our ‘Harvest Appeal’ was a fantastic success, raising
over 409kg worth of food equating to approximately
976 meals. This is a fantastic amount for our first
event and the local foodbank commented that it’s one
of the largest food donations they’ve ever had. The
work of Dunstable Foodbank is unmeasurable in
helping the local community as well as supporting
families of student who go to our school. It was
humbling to see that already donated food from the
foodbank had been returned to them to go to other
families. We look forward to running this again in the
near future, and I’m positive that next time we can
beat 1000 meals! Thank you to everybody who
donated.
Lost property
We would like to remind parents that we have limited
storage available for lost property and, therefore, any
items not collected are sent to charity at the end of
every half-term. We recommend that parents write
their child’s name in items of uniform/coats etc so we

Personal, Social and Health Education is currently
being delivered as part of the whole schools tutor
time routine.
Students focus this half term has been Dreams &
Goals (Careers). Within this topic they have
explored skills opportunity and understanding to
respect and admire others aspirations, skills of
independence and motivation, responding and
setting themselves a challenge, awareness of
opportunity in/outside school and how to find out
about careers.
An accolade to the hard work of tutors in the
development of school community and students
skills at public speaking KS3 tutor groups are
currently taking the lead with their year group
assemblies.
Miss Bolton’s group led the way braving a stand-up
presentation in front of the whole of Yr7 & 8 giving
their top tips on Positivity; followed by a film
starring Miss Crehan’s tutor group detailing a very
personal reflection on Motivation and Inspiration.
These students have set a high standard that we
look forward to seeing picked up by the rest of their
year

Yr9 Workshop with Yinka Ilori
Yr9 Art students currently completing an additional
Silver Arts Award to their GCSE in Art, took part in a
workshop with acclaimed artist Yinka Ilori.
The students spent the day producing an up cycled
chair on the theme of Alice in Wonderland, which will
feature in a pop-up of the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party in
the schools main foyer to promote the school’s
production. The Art department was transformed
into an furniture workshop for the day with students
experimenting with a range of wood work and
upholstery skills under the guidance of a skilled artist.
Yinka, who has recently graduated from London
Metropolitan University studying Furniture and
Product Design, and is gaining international
recognition, having already featured TimeOut, Vogue
and Observer Magazine, gave an inspirational talk to
both the Yr9 and Post16 Art students on resilience and
opportunity available to them through higher
education and setting up their own businesses.
Throughout the day Yr7 and Yr8 students were given
tours of the project as it progressed and the
opportunity to meet Yinka. The Yr9 students did us
proud with the efforts they put in to the day; Yinka
expressed his admiration for their efforts, going so far
as to spend their lunch in the workshop.
We greatly look forward to the inviting Yinka back for
the students pop-up exhibition in support of the
school production in February.

The Academy has had the opportunity to take part in
a programme called ‘Bookbuzz’ to celebrate reading
for pleasure. Every student in Year 7 has been able to
choose their very own book from a list of 17 titles.
Last week, as part of the induction to the Learning
Resource Centre, we were delighted to present them
with their chosen book. Please encourage them to
read it at home and we look forward to reading their
reviews.
