Good Evening and welcome to The Grass Roots Stadium for this Spartan

South Midland Premier Division tie.

Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of AFC Dunstable

to Tring, we hope they enjoy their short stay with us, and have a safe trip

back afterwards.

but we would like to thank his family for their continued generous support.

We met AFC a couple of weeks ago at Creasey Park when the match

finished 1-1 after an entertaining game.

Our guests today are having another good season in The Premier Division.

They are currently in 2nd place in the league which is a great performance

after losing several of their players to Berkhamsted. They will take great

delight in finishing above that side in the league which it looks like they

may well do.

We met London Colney on Saturday and were unfortunate to lose 1-0.

After a slow start we dominated possession but were unable to score and

Colney took advantage to convert one of their only two efforts on goal in

the second half.

The Reserves were without a game after 2 defeats, one to Sutton Utd who

are a class act and then to Northwood, where they were unlucky to lose to

a side boosted by a large contingent of 1st team players. They are away to

Sutton on Saturday while the first team are at Hadley who beat

Berkhamsted 3-0 last weekend.

History of Tring Athletic: Formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed app. £2,000 towards the cost of the land, fencing,

changing rooms etc .Players, Committee members and friends carried out the work while the team played on another

pitch. Originally formed for youngsters under the age of 21, the team won many trophies in the West Herts. Div. 3

including the Div. 1 title 3 times in 5 years, often playing against adult sides.

The 70’s/80’s The Club went through a lean time and it was decided to scrap the upper age limit. Many former players returned

which resulted in another successful period in the early 1970’s.

Many fine players turned out for the Club and went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid-seventies the

Club nearly folded and the ground was sold to the Council. The reserves were disbanded and the First team dropped

down through the leagues. It was decided to turn to youth again. This formula enabled the Club to work back through

the leagues and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Div. and the reserves were resurrected.

South Midlands-The 90’s. In 1988 the Club joined The South Midlands and as a result gained Senior status with The Herts. FA

In 1989 we entered in a 3 year ground sharing agreement with Tring Town.

In 1992 the first team moved back to Miswell Lane, where the Reserves had continued to play. The side established

itself in The South Midlands and gained promotion to the newly formed Senior Div.

in 1993. In 1994/5 season, the First Team reached the final of the Senior Div. Cup While the Reserves were finalists

in the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running.

In 1996/7 after leading the Div. for the whole season, some poor results at the end found us finishing 3rd. We also

reached the semi- final of the Herts. Charity Shield and won the St. Mary’s Cup beating 5 Senior sides including

Isthmian League Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Town In 1997/8 after winning the last 14 games we lost out on

the Title on goal difference of 2. The Reserves won their league by 10 points winning every home game. The following year we won the South Midlands Senior Div. Cup and also The St. Mary’s Cup for the second time,

defeating neighbours Tring Town in the semi-final in front of a crowd of 350, mostly Athletic supporters. In the

league after suffering just one defeat in 28 games, we finished 3rd.

The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. £ 50k was spent on new changing rooms and extending the

Clubhouse and over 1000 people turned up to watch a Watford X1 refereed by Graham Barber and Graham Poll.. We

also formed a third team a Vets side and a Ladies team. The season turned out to be our most successful. Not only

winning the Senior Div. by 11 points, we also reached 5 finals. Winning The Herts. Charity Shield, Herts. Senior

Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in it’s inaugural year. We were narrowly beaten 1-0in The Senior

Div. Cup and the reached Final of the St. Mary’s Cup which was never played because of a back log of fixtures.

We were awarded the Houghton Cup for achievements in outside competitions.

The Management team were also voted Managers of the season. We lost only 6 out of 60 games all season. The

Reserves reached the Final of The Intermediate Cup and the A Team finished runners up in the West Herts. Div.

The New Millennium We continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating

Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a

newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts. Charity Shield

for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the

sporting award. Season 2002/03 – More success followed as we capture the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to

become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12

major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as

did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies

had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing

surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.

Season 2003/04 –Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance

with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in

place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down

in March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, and Ladies sides. This new arrangement

with Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.

Season2004/05 – New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in

the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We

were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A

Vase for the first time.

Season 2005/6 –The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim

round. In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large

crowd enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference

league

Season 2006/7-The first team finished mid table after a difficult start to the season. Went 3 rounds in the e.on

FA Cup, losing to Kings Lyn, the biggest side in the competition at that time. The events of the year however came

after the season had completed. Mick Eldridge and Ray Brimsom stepped down as first team managers after 17 years.

Ron Brimsom also after 16 years decided to hand over the reigns and our Hon. Secretary Ralph Griffiths also stood

down after 25 years in that position. A wealth of experience which thankfully will not be lost, as they are all staying

on in some capacity.

Season 2007/2008-.The new management team of Phil Casserley and Terry Nightingale ended in glory at The

County Ground, Letchworth, with the First Team lifting The Herts. Charity Shield for the 3rd time.

Season 2008/2009- A reasonable league campaign saw the first team finish in 8th position. However in true Athletic tradition, it was in the cups in which we excelled, reaching 4 semi-finals. After being 4-2 up

with just a few minutes to go, 3 late goals meant the first one slipped away. This strengthened the resolve of the

whole team and in a remarkable last seven days of the season, three trophies were gained. Winning the League

Challenge Trophy and Premier Div. Cup for the first time and also defeating local rivals Leverstock Green to pick up

the St. Mary’s Cup for the 4th time Ex-player, Ben Williams re-joined the club as reserve team manager mid season and will lead the side in the Suburban

League next season.

Season 2009/2010- After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the first team finished without a trophy. However they finished third in the league, the highest position the club’s history so far. With the ground getting the

higher ground grading required, the management and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in

2010/2011.

The B Team did pick up some silver ware winning The Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town’s ground.

Season 2010/2011- The first team finished runners up in The Premier Division. They also won The St. Mary’s

Cup beating Leverstock Green in the final and reached the final of The Floodlite Cup, losing 2-0 to Royston Town

Season 2011/2012- With a new Management set up and several new faces in the First team, we were pleased to

finish in the top six and reach 3 cup semi-finals. All our sides performed well, with one of our youth sides going

through the league season undefeated. The ladies won their league and reached the final of the County Cup, losing to

Arsenal reserves. SEASON 2012/2013 - Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then

losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the

League we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi final of the Premier Division Cup and

were finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James

Bevan won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first time in the Club's history. Unfortunately the Ladies

team withdrew from their league through lack of players. SEASON 2013/2014 -First team had a good run in The FA Vase and finished mid-table. Reserves finished

runners up on goal difference and won promotion to the Premier Division. Club purchased the Free-Hold of the ground

and second pitch to ensure future football in the town.

THE HISTORY OF AFC DUNSTABLE

AFC Dunstable started life as Old Dunstablians Football Club in 1981. The name Old

Dunstablians originated from an organisation formed in 1888 for old boys from

Dunstable Grammar School. The most famous member of the club is Hollywood actor

Gary Cooper, who attended the school in the early 1900’s.

When the Grammar School closed down and Manshead School opened they took over the

mantle but the old boys club was in decline. In 1981 the head teacher was asked if he

could re launch the name, hence the football club was born.

By 1988 after its centenary, the Old Dunstablians Club ceased to exist but the football

club carried on in commemoration and to this day still bears the club crest on its badge.

The club started in the Dunstable Alliance Football League for a couple of seasons then

moved onto the Luton District and South Bedfordshire League in 1983. Still playing at

Manshead School with the 1st team and reserves, success was limited with the 1st team

runners up twice in Division One and runners up in the William Pease Cup. While in the

Luton League though the 1st team did land the Bedfordshire Junior Cup beating Leighton

Athletic on penalties in 1989 –90 season. The reserves did win some silverware, when

back in the day a cup final went to a replay. The season was 1993-94 when they beat

overwhelming favourites Luton Old Boys.

With the club using Dunstable Town Cricket Club as their social base in Bull Pond Lane,

the cricket club was looking to move to a larger site in Totternhoe and when the new club

was opened in 1994, a football pitch was accommodated, so the football club moved

there from Manshead School.

An improvement in facilities gave the club a chance to apply to join the South Midlands

League in 1995. Accepted into the then Division One (Premier and Senior Divisions were

the higher divisions) the club struggled, as they flirted with being relegated straight back

to the Luton League in the first 2 seasons. Going through new managers every season,

we finally started to gain some consolidation and in season 2001-02 the 1st team finished

4th in the league and won the Division One Cup. The following season we just missed out

of the title, which was now Division Two. Looking to go one better we finally clinched

the title the next season and was runners up in the Division Two Cup.

Ground Grading issue’s were now starting to stop the team from getting promoted, as 2

ground sharing agreements were turned down by the league.

This was now the start of a trophy laden period, as the Division Two title again was

secured and back-to-back Bedfordshire Senior Trophy’s. Added to that, the Division Two

Cup was won again.

The club in 2003-04 decided to launch its youth policy and when the Under 15’s were

runners up in the Chiltern Youth league, it started on the path to work its way through

the FA Charter Standard. We achieved Adult status in 2003-04. The club then made the

decision to change its name to AFC Dunstable, so not to get confused with the local rugby

club, as the club started to grow and the name was more associated to a football club.

The club kept the name The OD’s, as their nickname. The youth then was awarded the

Charter Standard in 2005-06. The next big step was to become a Development Club and

a great deal of work saw the club achieve this in 2007. Next up was our goal to become

a FA Charter Standard Community Club and 2008 saw the club get there. In that time the

club has been awarded the Development Club Of The Year in 2008 and the Community

Club Of The Year in 2009.

Since we launched the youth policy back in 2003, the club have had over 30

managers/coaches pass various FA coaching courses and more are still to come.

With the club now boasting 14 teams and catering for adults, youth, junior, girls and

disability footballers, the local authority and the Bedfordshire Football Association

approached the club to become partners in the new Creasey Park Community Football

Centre in 2008 and this gave the chance to move the 1st team to Creasey Park and apply

for promotion to Division One for the start of the 2009-10 season, which was accepted.

The 1st team finished a very creditable 5th in it’s first season at the higher level. As at the

start of 2010-11, the club has grown to 16 teams and the Junior Football Academy goes

from strength to strength. History was also made in 2010-11, as the 1st team was

accepted to participate in the FA Vase. A fine run through to the 2nd Round Proper was

achieved. Looking to improve on the league position the previous season, the team went

all out for promotion and finished runners up in the league and gained promotion to the

Premier Division at their 2nd attempt. The SSMFL Division One Cup was secured as well.

Now with the 1st team in the SSMFL Premier Division and entry into the FA Cup for 2011-

12, finished a fine 3rd in the league. The club increased to 33 teams ranging from 5 year

olds right through the 1st team for 2012-13. In that season the 1st team consolidated in

the Premier Division and finished a respectable 8th. Their run the FA Cup saw them get

through 3 rounds eventually going out to Northwood after a replay. With the club now at

35 teams for 2013-14, they have grown to the biggest club in the county of Bedfordshire.

Within the structure of the club the female side has grown to 2 ladies teams and 2 girls

teams.

The ladies 1st team won the Eastern Region Womens League North Division and in season

2014-15 will compete in the Premier Division. That promotion meant back to back titles

for them. They will compete at step 3 in the ladies pyramid, so the ladies are only 2 steps

below the likes of Tottenham Hotspurs and West Ham United.

After the 1st team being managed by the most successful pair in the clubs history Alex

Butler and Dermot Butler, they decided to step down after 9 years at the helm half way

through 2013-14. This left the team in disarray, as many stalwarts of the team decided

to leave. The club decided to appoint current manager Steve Heath and the club went on

a re building exercise within the adult section.

Steve appointed ex Bedford Town defender Steve Jackman as his assistant and Matt

Langston as player-coach. Matt's former clubs included Histon, Eastbourne Borough and

Kettering Town from the Conference.

It was also time for a change with the Reserve Team as Paul Axten was appointed and his

brief was to bring in as many Under 21's into the team he could. With the reserves looking

odds on for relegation, he turned it around with his young players and pushed up the

league to finish mid table.

Next on the agenda was to resurrect the Under 18 team in the Southern Counties Floodlit

League. Gary Breeden was brought in from a very successful Chesham United team and

now they will play once again in the league and the FA Youth Cup.

Now in 2014-15, the club has 21 youth boys teams, with our Under 14's and Under 16's

competing in the Eastern Junior Alliance. The female section consists of 2 adult teams

and 5 girls teams. On top of that we also have 3 disabled teams. In total 34 teams

represent the club.

With the management structure now fully in place in all our teams, season 2014-15 is

looking extremely positive.

KINGY'S BRACE EARNS A DRAMATIC DERBY POINT We appeared to be hurtling towards defeat when our local rivals and near neighbours Berkhamsted took a commanding 2-0 lead by the early stages of the second half. Up to that point we had been a pale shadow of the side that had performed so well in the last 3 months, with just 3 narrow defeats (2 of which were against top 5 sides) from 14 games. In response Julian Robinson and Ian Richardson made some inspired changes that led to substitute Stewart King coming on and making a dramatic impact by firstly reducing the deficit within seconds and then grabbing a dramatic equaliser deep into added time. It was boys own stuff from Kingy. Our exertions in midweek, when we bravely battled for a well deserved 1-1 draw at 2nd placed AFC Dunstable, seemed to have taken its toll on our young players as they seemed a bit flat and below par during the first half. Berko started strongly and their centre forward BJ Christie, who was making a return to the side after injury, produced the first shot of the game after only 2 minutes. It didn't test Jack Hopwood but 8 minutes later he would have been happy to see Frankie Jowle's shot cum cross flash dangerous across the area and out harmlessly for a goal kick. We were slow to get going but we did win the first corner of the game after 13 minutes, which unfortunately came to nothing. Berko looked the more dangerous team and their right back Courtney Massey whipped in a great cross which we managed to clear. But soon afterwards in the 19th minute we were not so successful in clearing our lines and Frankie Jowle took full advantage to fire a shot into the far corner. It was a well taken goal and gave the home side the initiative. Score 1-0. Berko nearly doubled their lead within seconds when a quick break caught us on the hop but this time Jowle's shot was easily saved by Jack Hopwood. We were missing Vinnie Iannone up front and were finding it difficult to make an impression on the home defence in which big centre back and captain Ed Canham won everything in the air. But the home defence got in a muddle 10 minutes before the break and that allowed Chris Vardy to break away, but the ball wouldn't run kindly for him and his shot was pushed away by keeper Carl Tasker. Unfortunately none of our players were on hand to snap up the loose ball. Prior to that we won a free kick in a good position and Taylor Collins's well struck delivery forced the keeper to dive and punch the ball away. We won a couple of corners but again they came to nothing. It was then Berkos turn to win their first corner in the 36th minute and Ed Canham will feel he should have done better than direct a free header straight into the arms of Jack Hopwood. We had a great chance to equalise 2 minutes later when Ryan Sturges seized on a poor clearance from keeper Carl Tasker then found himself with a good sight of goal following an exchange of passes with Kieran Turner but the keeper atoned for his error by making a great save at the expense of a corner. Tasker missed the corner but Dan Steadman and Ollie Hogg got in each others way at the far post and keeper was probably relieved that he could safely gather the ball in. With just a few minutes left to the break BJ Christie shaped up to shoot but Sam Joliffe did brilliantly to block his effort. After a disappointing half we could have no complaint about being a goal down to our hosts who had been the better side. Half Time: Berkhamsted 1 Tring Athletic 0 Adam Toone appeared after the break in place of the unwell Ollie Hogg and he slotted into his usual centre

back position allowing Sam Joliffe to return to his normal midfield role. It was great to see the big man back again after he injured himself against London Tigers on 27th January, but he will be unhappy about his wayward header which allowed BJ Christie a run on goal and finally resulted in him pushing the Berko forward over for a penalty and getting a yellow card for his troubles. To quote Tony Pullis " I've seen old women on the high street take more of a knock than that and stay on their feet" and the Berko forward did go over rather easily for a big guy, but if the boot had been on the other foot we would have expected a penalty. Josh Chamberlain, who was making his 200 appearance, confidently dispatched the penalty to cement his place as Berko's leading scorer with 24 goals and give his side a huge 2 goal advantage after 49 minutes. Score 2-0. We were not performing to our usual standard and were facing a big uphill challenge to get back 2 goals and recognising this we brought on Ryan McMahon and Stewart King in the 58th minute for Ryan Sturges and Rob Tomlin and the impact was immediate as within a minute we pulled a goal back. It was created by a precisely taken free kick from Kieran Turner and Stewart King was on the end of it to head it past Carl Tasker to get us right back into a game that appeared to be drifting away from us. Score 2-1. With Ryan McMahon and Sam Joliffe in the centre of midfield we were able to match our hosts physicality and the game became much more evenly balanced. Jack Hopwood made a couple of saves from Adiel Mannion and later from Josh Chamberlain and Kieran Turner struck a free kick just over. In the 70th minute Kieran Turner produced some lovely footwork and was just about to break into the opposition area when he was cynical pulled down from behind by Max Farrelly. It certainly robbed us of a potential scoring opportunity and Farrelly was booked but it was a classic case of Berko man taking one for the team. Time was running out for us when we won a free kick in a good position and the same combination came to our rescue with Kieran Turner's superb set piece being finished off by Stewart King. Kingy has endured a lot of injuries this season and this was only his 7 goal but undoubtedly it would have been one of his most enjoyable moments, grabbing an equaliser in a local derby in the 94th minute. Score 2-2. There was just enough time for us to deal with a free kick before the Referee blew the final whistle on an eventful derby match, which attracted a crowd of 183 (with a large contingent of Athletic supporters), the biggest attendance in the South Midlands League this season. Full Time: Berkhamsted 2 Tring Athletic 2 After a poor first half and going behind again so soon in the second we may have buckled under the pressure but again we showed tremendous fight and character to haul ourselves back and keep going to the very end. Also full marks to Julian and Ian for boldly making changes which in the end rewarded us with a point which we thoroughly deserved. There were only 3 other games played on Saturday so full marks to our hosts for putting the game on. The only significant change saw Dunstable go top after beating Biggleswade 2-0 but the odds still favour Kings Langley who are only 2 points behind with 5 games in hand. We remain in 6th place and Berko in 10th. After a heavy schedule of 5 games in 2 weeks which has taken its toll on the players we now have a week off to heal and rest a few weary bones before travelling to Holmer Green on Saturday. TAFC Ged Keough Annual Golf Day - Friday 3rd July 2015 (posted Wed 11th Mar 2015)

27 hole competition including 9 hole Texas Scramble in the morning

on the Rothschild Championship course followed by the main 18

hole competition, with nearest the pin and longest drive, competition

in the afternoon on the Rosebery Championship course. Coffee on

arrival, lunch and 2 course evening meal with prize giving.

This will also be one of the qualifiers for the TAFC Golf Society but

the day is open to players of all abilities whether members or non-

members of the Club.

home care and support for people in our local community with cancer and life-

MATCH REPORT – SATURDAY 7 MARCH 2015

This was a clash of two in-form teams, with us suffering just one defeat in 9 previous games whilst our guests had an even better record of no losses in 10. But despite these impressive records the game was scrappy and tight as we cancelled each other out. Ultimately the outcome was settled by a superb strike from the visitor's captain a quarter of an hour from the end which was somewhat out of kilter with the general run of play which was quite poor with few scoring chances created. We were short of central defenders with Chris Salmon, Dan Steadman and Ollie Butler all missing so we opted to move away from our usual back three which has been so successful lately to a more conventional back four. Our players took a little while to settle into the change of formation and Colney looked the better side in the early stages, but despite enjoying more possession they didn't pose too much of a threat to our goal. Taylor Collins did well to chase down an early long ball and then turn neatly past the defender but his attempt to curl the ball into the far corner went wide of the post. We gradually got into the game after a slow start and won the first corner of the game in the 15th minute with the set piece nearly falling to Sam Joliffe but we were also finding it difficult to generate any threat to our opponents' goal. Colney's tall defender Tom Smith got his head to a free kick but his header went well wide. There was some momentary excitement as half time approached when visiting forward Martin Collins got free down the right but his dangerous cross was cut out by stand in skipper Sam Joliffe. Then at the other end Greg Deer's fine pass found Taylor Collins who showed some great skill to flick the ball past his opponent to create a shooting chance but his effort went straight at the keeper. So a tight, even first half of few opportunities unsurprisingly ended scoreless, but our supporters would have relished the prospect of us kicking towards our favoured end after the interval. We started the second period on the front foot and Adam Toone was causing problems for Colney with his long throws. In the 55th minute we found the net from one of Adam's throws after the keeper misjudged the bounce of the ball but it failed to touch anybody en route and so a goal kick was awarded. Colney had conceded only 20 goals in 27 games and they clearly came with a game plan to keep that terrific record intact by defending stoutly and in numbers and hope to catch us on the break. The danger signs were there for us during the early stages of the second half as we took on a more attacking role. Jack Hopwood was able to easily gather in a header from a free kick and we managed to scramble the ball away for a corner after a quick breakaway by Colney nearly caught us out in the 51st minute. We had a narrow escape 13 minutes later when the ball was played up to James Ewington who forced Jack Hopwood into a terrific save. The visitors took every

opportunity to break at speed and in numbers when the opportunity arose and did so with deadly effect in the 76th minute when their Skipper Danny Fitzgerald thumped the ball home from 30 yards Score 0-1.

It was a terrific shot but what was disappointing was that the goal stemmed from our corner after we got caught dwelling on the ball on the edge of their area when we had an opportunity to fire in a shot. Kieran Turner and Vinnie Iannone had already come on for Greg Deer and Taylor Collins and there was debut for new signing Lee Stobbs who celebrated his 25th birthday the day before. Lee is a forward and replaced Stuart Stedman as we went for broke in an attempt to get something out of the game.
