    Brows & Lashes

Internet searches assure me that no matter how over-plucked, over-waxed or over-groomed your eyebrows may be, there is hope still for beautiful, arched, perfectly coiffed speci-mens. The most extreme method might be an eyebrow transplant (yes really!), but there are other less drastic options!

Most of us ladies and the odd gent too need to lose a few hairs from the brow line. The easiest solution is tweezing away the stray hairs yourself, but the results are short-lived and the risk of creating the wrong shape is high. Better results can be achieved by a professional, with waxing and thread-ing methods achieving hair removal lasting around 4-6 weeks. Fair or very thin eyebrows may benefit from being tinted. Like hair dye, this changes the colour and lasts 4-6 weeks.

A popular look at the moment is HD (High Definition) Brows which focus on shape and design and promise to give you sleek, stylish brows like those enjoyed by the stars. A seven step process that includes a consul-tation followed by tinting, waxing, threading, tweez-ing, trimming and finishing with a pencil or brush to fill in any gaps, is described as more than just shaping or tidying but actual eyebrow artistry!

With your brows looking beautiful brows its time to move on to the eyelashes.

There are numerous mascaras around promising volume, length and thickness, and I can vouch for some of them actually work-ing! My daughters naturally

long lashes were taken to another level following the application of a

new mascara. But what else is on offer?

Tinting is an option if your lashes are particu-larly fair, and its not just for girls. I remember the difference it made to my friends son after his lashes were darkened. Curling makes straight lashes appear longer, and creates the illusion of wider, brighter, more feminine eyes. Lash-perming, which is best carried out by a professional, can make the results can last for six weeks, which is great for holidays or if you have any big events lined up.

Finally, how about having eyelash exten-sions? This is one of the UKs fastest growing beauty treatments and involves gluing separate synthetic eyelashes to individual natural lashes to give a luscious, natural look. The amount of curl, length or thickness can vary according to your personal preference and the results last for 8-12 weeks depending on your natural lash growth cycle.

I was born with my dads eyebrows. Naturally thick, shapeless and unsightly, they looked like two caterpillars stuck to my forehead. At age twelve I followed the fashion of the day and plucked away until they were within a whisper of totally disappearing - and I was on the point of fainting! Today, my eyebrows are thin, shapeless and unsightly and Im resigned to them looking that way forever. Or rather I was

Brighter, longer, warmer days are always welcome as it puts a different perspective on daily life, but Im sure youve been noticing more than just a change in the weather in Dunstable. Some of our key projects and developments are coming to fruition, such as the Priory View Independent Living Scheme, which opened recently, and has begun fulfilling one of our top priorities of helping older residents live longer more independent lives.Another major aim of great importance is to improve the health and wellbeing of people of all ages. Thats why Im really excited about our proposals for a 20.1million com-prehensive redevelopment of Dunstable Leisure Centre, though I hesitate to call it that. Our ambition is to provide the town with much, much more than a leisure centre. Its an innovative model that is completely different to anything we have done before in Central Bedfordshire. Rather than a refurbishment this will be a transformational project which, to all intents and purposes, will be a com-pletely new and bigger building. Only the pool tanks and sports hall structures will remain of the current building, as they were constructed so soundly, but everything else will be new, including the way it will appeal to the interests of a broader spectrum of the com-munity than it currently serves. We want to relocate Dunstable Library into the facility, as

well as Citizens Advice Bureau and various other services. With longer opening hours and greater flexibility, the bot-tom line is that it will be better value for you.So we are confident that the long-term benefits to Dun-stable will be more than outweighed by the short-term inconvenience. This redevelopment, however, will mean the leisure centre is closed for around 18-months. We understand this is not an ideal situation, but we looked into building a new centre elsewhere, though would not guarantee that the current one remains open as it is in such a poor condi-tion. The current location of the centre is another hugely important factor as it sits at the heart of the towns cultural quarter and will contribute to the overall regeneration of the town centre. I can assure you that every step weve taken has been informed by our Leisure Strategy, which was published two years ago after extensive public consultation and is underpinned by studies, research and collaborative work-ing with partners and governing bodies, such as Sport England, to determine the needs of the community both now and in the future.I am therefore confident that what we are proposing is the best solution for all of our residents and will meet the needs of our current and growing population. I would stress that nothing has been decided yet. We are in consultation until July 8th and we are listening.

    Revitalising Dunstable

In 1981 Antonia Vassallo Todaro worked alongside her husband, Papa Carmelo, at the family Delicatessen, Carmelos Continental, on Midland Road Luton. Being a working mother, with a husband and four sons to feed, Mama Antonia relied on the traditional Italian recipes that had been passed down to her through the generations. With a little imagination and taking inspiration from her mother, Cira, and grandmother, also Antonia, she added her own twist to each recipe, developing her own menu and with it an idea to bring authentic Italian cuisine to the people of Dunstable. At 2pm on July 5th Mamma Antonia finished working at the Deli as usual. At 5pm, accompanied by eldest son Carmelo Jr., her idea became reality as she opened the doors to Dunstables first Italian Pizzeria, Sorrento Pizzeria, located at 204 High Street North where it has remained for the last 35 years. Despite having to wait several months for an alcohol licence - diners had to bring their own wine! - the restaurant and Antonias menu proved a resounding suc-cess, so much so that within a year of opening the family decided to extend into the cellar. Sorrento Ristorante was born, offering a full A la carte Menu, Italian English & French food served by silver service. It was another hit! It seemed the town had discovered a taste for this new cuisine and the restaurant rapidly gained a reputation for its quality food, affordable prices and large, tasty portions. The family are now proud to boast that they introduced the town to many of the dishes were used to being served in Italian restaurants today. In 1989 the pizzeria was renamed Donatellos, the cellar became Grazianos and eventually son no. 2, Michele, took over as manager. Today Donatellos is much the same and Michele, along with the rest of the family, strive to uphold many of the Italian traditions and values introduced by Antonia. The joy of serving top quality, homemade food in intimate and welcoming surroundings remains at the fore, If you

like traditional Italian this is still the place for you. Whilst Donatellos today still has an unbeatable selection of traditional, homemade pizzas and pastas, Michele has moved with the times and ever changing tastes by creating many new signature dishes which have become customer favourites. The menu can accommodate most dietary needs, with a little prior notice, vegetarian and vegan dishes are a speciality and gluten free options are available if requested when you book. If its not on the menu, with a little notice Donatellos can create almost any Italian dish so just ask! There truly is something to suit all tastes. In 1998 the family decided to expand the business and acquired a century old cottage, at 91 Dunstable Street in Ampthill, which on 28th October, after five gruelling months of refurbishment, opened its doors as a 30 seat restaurant. Through continued success the capacity at Donatellos, Ampthill was extended to 80 diners, set over two floors in five private dining rooms. The building has retained all of its charm with period features including beams, fireplaces and low ceilings, all creating a cosy quaintness and typical Donatellos atmosphere. The restaurant has the added bonus of a garden and Alfresco dining area for diners to enjoy during the summer. Michele has also made Donatellos available for private functions and both restaurants can cater for most events, whether it be a birthday celebration, pre-booked lunch buffet, wedding reception and, in Ampthill, even garden parties. The experienced and friendly staff will be on hand to make any occasion one to remember.Keen to expand the business further, Michele introduced a take away and delivery service so you can now enjoy made to order, authentic Italian food - a Donatellos - without having to leave the house (Ampthill offers pick-up service only). If you enjoy good food Donatellos offers variety and versatility that only comes with 35 years of experience.Visit www.donatellospizzeria.co.uk for more information.

Vauxhall Male Voice Choir choir was born in 1943 during the grim and dark days of World War II when morale was at low ebb. The factory had been turned primarily to the manufacture of tanks and military vehicles and it was by way of an outlet from this travail that a singing group was formed. They were soon entertaining the troops by radio broadcasts and enter-taining locally in charitable concerts. Our history is long and littered with interesting stories and events; we have done most of the things, and more, ex-pected of a male voice choir! Participation in competitions including winning a prize at a Welsh eisteddfod, singing with famous massed military bands in the regular pageants held at the Luton Football Ground during the 1980s, TV

appearances, including Harry Secombes Highway pro-gramme and travelling (usually each year) on away-trips to British and European towns and cities have all featured in the rich life of VMVC choris-ters past and present. The choir is currently 45-strong and sings now mainly for enjoyment and charitable causes. We are always keen to accept new members and regularly take steps by way of recruitment exercises to ensure the future of our organisation. We meet every Wednesday evening at 7.30pm for practice at St Mar-garets Church, Biscot Mill, Luton and newcomers will be made extremely welcome by our friendly members. Just turn up on a Wednesday or, alternatively contact Brian Matthews on 01525-841077.

Marriage Tax Are you married or in a civil partnership?

If so, is one of you a non-taxpayer, and the other paying

basic 20% tax? If youve just answered yes, then youre

one of 4.1million couples due a free 212 a year.

This is all about marriage tax allowance, a tax-break introduced in April 2015. I was stunned to find out how few people know about it and the likelihood is youre in the 80% who havent claimed it, so Im going to tell you how.

Who can get it? You must be married or civil partners. If youve lived together for 20 years and have four kids and a dog, you are not eligible. This is a bit of social engineering by the government to have a reward for marriage in the tax system. One of you must be a non-taxpayer, i.e., usually earning less than 10,600, and the other needs to pay tax at the basic 20% rate, which is currently for those who earn under 42,385. You both must be under 80 (then theres another tax break).Dont overcomplicate this. Many people ask if they count as a non-taxpayer as Im a volunteer, I only work part time, I dont work. Stop it. Are you a UK resident who doesnt pay income tax? If you are, you count simple as that.

How does it work? The non-taxpayer can transfer 1,060 of their personal allowance thats the amount you can earn tax-free to their partner.Imagine Tyrone earns 10,000 at a garage, and is a non-taxpayer. He can arrange for 1,060 of his tax-free allowance to be transferred to his wife Fizz. So thats 1,060 of earnings she wouldve paid tax on at 20% thats now tax free. As 20% of 1,060 is 212, thats your gain.

How do you claim it? Its a really simple process. The non-taxpayer should just go to www.gov.uk/marriage-al-lowance or call 0300 200 3300. Youll need your national insurance numbers and some basic ID. Let me stress again though, its the NON TAXPAYER who must sign up people

do it the other way round and then wonder why theyre rejected.

Do I get it every year? Yes, its done via a change in your tax code that remains, so its 212 a year gain every year and once youve applied its done automatically. If your circumstances change, you need to call up and tell them.

Can I backdate the claim? Yes, you can backdate for four years, but it only started on 6 April 2015 so of course you cant go back further than that.

What if either or both of us are self-employed? It doesn't matter. As long as you fulfil the eligibility criteria above, you can apply. The only difference is if the recipient partner is in self-assessment, it will reduce their self-assess-ment bill.

What if Im a non-taxpayer who doesnt have 1,060 to pass across? It still works, its just a bit more complex if the non-taxpayer is earning just under the 10,600 thresh-old. This is because you have to transfer 1,060 of your allowance to take advantage nothing more, nothing less.

So lets do another example. Suppose Fred is a basic rate taxpayer married to Wilma who earns 10,000 a year, so shes only got 600 left of her tax free allowance. She can still move 1,060 to Fred, so he gains 212 on that amount. That lowers her allowance to 9,540, but she earns 10,000 so shell pay basic 20% tax on the 440 meaning she is 88 worse off. Overall, though theyre still up over 100. If you dont get the maths, dont worry, youre always col-lectively up by doing this, so if youre a non-taxpayer, even close to the limit its still worth applying.

If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10 year guarantee. But its not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps dont focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Dunstable, Luton & surrounding areas areas and manager Tom Bliss

agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. The truth is that its not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people Ive done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise. So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tom a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and hell be happy to help!

    A Pensioners View

    Have your say{

    Intergenerational Fairness?

This article deals with the above title and the original appeared in the 'The Message', a newspaper issued by the National Pensioners Convention, after a statement from the conventions president, Ron Douglas. It needs to be read by all present pensioners and it may apply to future pensioners also.

'Intergenerational Fairness' is being presently dealt with by a government select committee from the Department Of Works and Pensions. Its members are looking at abandoning the 'triple lock' on the basic pension and means testing of the winter fuel allowance. The matter is being discussed when it is known where one in every three households have difficulty in meeting the payment of ever rising fuel bills, which reflects the statistic of 43,900 older people died from cold related illness last year - the highest figure for 15 years. The crux of the committee's work is to assess whether existing pensioners have enjoyed and accumulated much more housing and financial wealth, public service usage and welfare and pension entitlements than more recent generations can hope to achieve. The committee seems to have accepted the view that older people have been protected from austerity whilst the rest of society has had to pay.Older people are also being blamed for the fact

their homes have risen in value over the last 30 years, but the truth is, these rising home prices are due to lack of available homes and an economy driven by house price inflation. This appears to be a race to the bottom which helps no one and more or less condemns future generations to a lifetime of working longer, paying more and getting less when they eventually retire. An indictment of our society if we can not give younger people a secure and better future.

When I read the preceding article in 'The Message' I felt obliged to get it to a wider audience. It seems disgraceful to me that a government has to look at pensioners to face such draconian measures. I paid 50 years to a National Insurance and would expect that governments over this time could have set the National Insurance Fund at a price that could meet its obligations - they have failed to do so. The fund was always operating at a high surplus to requirements. The surplus could be used by the government in times of need and was repayable. What we as tax payers and National Insurance payers should demand of all governments is that the N.I. fund should be ring fenced and its in-clusive total fund should be used only for pension related purposes. The old mantra applies. We paid the insurance, we want that pension ring fenced now, so that insurance can be paid in full.

To win tell us: In what year was Chillfest first held?Email your answer to [email protected] Weve got family tickets for CHILFEST to give away!admitting 2 adults and 2 children to Chilfest on Friday 8th July.

C hilfest is a two day boutique music festival featuring original bands from the 80s . Held in the leafy and rural setting of Tring in Hertford-shire, with a capacity of 7,000 people for each day, Chilfest provides festival goers with an intimate yet lively atmosphere. The custom-built Chilfest arena com-prises a top quality stage and sound rig, a wide variety of food and drink outlets and plenty of toilet facilities, providing all the ingredients for a great weekend of live music ... right on here our doorstep.Chilfest is the brain child of Tring resident Steve Butcher. As Managing Director of Universal Event Productions (UEP), Steve has provided event staging and rigs for a wide variety of top live events and music festivals. An 80s music lover, he had the idea of bringing live music from original bands to the local area whilst at a friends barbecue, the seed for Chilfest was sown. The 15th anniversary of UEP gave Steve the chance to re-alise his dream when he decided to stage a concert for the local community to celebrate his business achieve-ments. Originally to be a one-off event, Steve set out to create a top quality music event with all proceeds going to local charity, Rennie Grove Hospice Care.In July 2013, the Inaugural Chilfest was staged at Pendley Meadow in Tring. Featuring a lively pop night on the Fri-

day, headlined by Little Mix, and a show-stopping line up of stars from the 80s, including Tony Hadley, Rick Astley, Howard Jones, Midge Ure, Hazel OConnor and Carol Decker on the Saturday. The event sold out to its 7,000 capacity. The quality of the production, which included some of the latest moving light and LED screen technologies, re-ceived many accolades and earned nominations in two categories at the 2013 UK Festival Awards. The success of the event encouraged Steve to hold Chil-fest again in 2014 This time plans evolved to include a Sunday afternoon with a more contemporary line-up for a younger audience. Over 15,000 people attended. In 2015, Pendley Meadow was once again filled to ca-pacity when, for the third year running, Chilfest rocked Tring with two spectacular nights of top quality music. This year saw, for the first time at Chilfest, a team of tal-ented performance interpreters who took to the stage with the bands and enthusiastically signed every single song for the benefit of the deaf community. Chilfest 2016 will take place on Friday 8th and Satur-day 9th July. once again, bringing two days of the very best sounds from the 1980s. This years line up includes UB40, Heather Small, The Human League, Chas and Dave, Tony Hadley and many more..

Want to try making your own face cream? Here is a basic recipe for a nourishing night cream that anyone can make at home to enjoy. What youll need...

This formula can be swapped with other oils. 90ml Coconut oil90ml Avocado oil150ml Rose water1oz Emulsifying wax30 drops Rose otto essential oil & 15 drops of Rose geranium essential oil (or frankincense)2 drops Vitamin E oil (a good antioxidant)

    How to make...

Create two bain maries on your hob or stove. In one bain marie add your oils (and emulsifying wax) and in the other add your water. Heat both the oils and water to 70-75 C to kill any bacteria using a thermometer. Take both bowls off the stove and slowly add the oils to the water bowl. Using a hand held whisk beat until the oils have been blended with the rose water. Let it cool down and then add you essential oils and vitamin E oil and whisk again. If your mixture looks like it is splitting just whisk again until it cools. When cold, spoon into a sterilised jar and youre doneTa Dah. Label and date it and keep in the fridge. I tend to put it in a large pot in the fridge and then take out what I need in smaller pots for everyday use. It should last quite a while. Make sure you do a patch test before you put it on your face and always wear a sun screen.

I know its all a bit trendy at the moment but I love foraging. What do we mean by foraging? Some people get themselves all upset and see it as thieving from the environment and stripping it bare. I guess it all depends on whether you choose to see the glass half full or half empty. To be honest I cant find anything negative about foraging if youre a responsible individual. The benefits to both the mind and body are priceless. Youre outdoors inhaling the essence of the seasonal air while you exercise your body rambling around the urban and rural Bedfordshire landscape. There is nothing like the feel good factor of being outdoors and having a purpose. The thing is when youre engaged in looking for your fodder the familiar becomes unfamiliar. We create a new window to the world that explodes into a magical world of wonder. The everyday walk or stroll creates meaning. It is all about the knowledge. Once you have some knowledge of basic edibles roaming around your own garden, path, or dog walk things begin to happen. The insignificant becomes magnified and we look at the world differentlyhow cool is that? When you find an edible its such a rush without the chocolate and it is free. Whoa Life just gets betterI become so immersed in the landscape I feel like I am in a living painting. I am the subject of my own painting unaware of my audience. I forget the world and my woes and the

focus of concentration is like meditating. I feel embodied to the landscape where I forget what my arms and my legs are doingyep its pure bliss. See the outdoors (both urban and rural) as a free supermarket. I only pick what I need and we are talking a few handfuls. I bag a variety of free edibles on my way back from the shops (avoiding road traffic paths) and make a salad or salsa verde or a pesto with it. Yum what a treat and they are so damn good for you. How good is that? If you care what you put into your body then I guess you care what you put on it. I also make my own astonishing premium face creams and serums specific for my own individual needs. I create my own seasonal hydrosols and add my own vitamins, enzymes, compounds and amino acids to my formulas costing a fraction of the cost of high street brands. I will be offering some half day courses on making premium face creams and serums and also foraging walks with hands on demonstrations on making some amazing wild edible recipes. Take a look at my blog and see some of my stunning edibles and creams. You can email me on my blog (at the top right contact me box) if you would like to book a place and I will reply with dates, times, questions and cost etc. These will take place late spring, summer and autumn. Look out for me perusing around Dunstable. I am often on my knees eyeing up the weeds so stop and chat to me.

  • Now is the time of year where many of us are getting ready to take a well deserved break leaving the UK to fly off to exotic places around the globe. However, for some the thought of lounging on some sun drenched beach or sip-ping cocktails by the pool is tainted with negative thoughts and feelings about how they are going to get there. The thought of flying fills some people with absolute dread and merely thinking about getting on a plane can cause anxiety and distress. Those who have a flying phobia otherwise known as aviophobia may have an idea as to what caused the problem whilst others are at a loss to understand why they feel the way they do. Actually what is at work here is a part of the brain called the amygdala whose job is to sound the alarm when it detects potential danger. Although it serves a crucial purpose in times of genuine danger there are times when it overreacts and gets in the way. So what can be done to alter this naturally occurring stress response when is it unwanted? One simple, yet often effective posi-tive action anyone can take is to regulate their breathing. As we become stressed our sympathetic nervous system kicks in increasing heart rate, sweating and muscular ten-sion. Add in feeling sick and rapid, shallow breathing from the top of the chest and what we have is a recipe for really not feeling good! This can come on very

suddenly and becoming aware of it is likely to make us feel even more anxious leading to a vicious circle aggravating the very feelings we do not want. Breaking this cycle may seem surprisingly simple however using a different type of breathing can counteract the stress response by engag-ing the parasympathetic nervous system using our natural biological braking system to slow things down to a steady, more comfortable pace. Breathing is controlled by taking a shorter in breath and longer out breath regulated by mak-ing a silent mental count of in for 7 and out for 11. Being flight phobic does not have to be a permanent part of life. Seeking help from a professional hypnotherapist may offer a way of improving the travelling experience where the aim is to remove or diminish unpleasant thoughts and feelings associated with flying. Hypnosis is a natural state of pleasant relaxation where the therapist works with the client to facilitate the desired change, resolving faulty thinking and freeing the person from unhelpful limiting beliefs. It is possible to move from being flight phobic to someone who is better able to handle negative feelings leading up to the flight, feeling more at ease on a plane and looking forward to a fabulous holiday just like everybody else. If you think you could benefit from hypnotherapy contact Peter Garner full details can be found on www.Petergarner.org

    VOLVO XC90 T8

How many cars have you driven that come with an Orrefors crystal gearshift lever as standard? South of zero, Id guess, but its one of the classy little touches youll find in Volvos latest range topper, its twin engined XC90 T8. With its twin engine set up, it show-cases the future for Volvo, one of the features of which will be the distinctive Thor hammer headlights youll find here lighting the way. Its built on Volvos SPA platform (Scaleable Product Architecture) which means it will be used for future cars in the pipeline that well be seeing before too long. 2015 was Volvos best year in the UK for 21 years, thanks to the V40 and the XC60. Nearly 3,000 XC90s have been sold here so far since its relaunch last year as a truly classy top banana true seven seater SUV. The latest addition to the range is the T8 and the engines (plural) in question here are Volvos T6 petrol unit linked up with an 87hp electric motor, which on a 10amp feed found in most UK homes will charge up in three and a half hours. The T8 can be driven for up to 27 miles on electric power alone enough for most peoples daily commute so

on many journeys it will not emit any exhaust pollutants at all. It has a different mechanical setup to other XC90s. Its petrol engine drives the front wheels only, while its electric motor drives the rear wheels. This means that, depending on the road conditions and the drive mode selected, the T8 can operate in front, rear or all-wheel drive. It is said to be the safest Volvo ever

built, and offers the most comprehen-sive standard safety package in the car industry. It also features two world-first safety technologies Run-off Road Protection and Auto Brake at Junctions which are part of Volvos advanced suite of intelligent safety systems. Dominating the dash area is the 9 inch info module that comes as standard and its a brilliant piece of kit. It houses pretty well all the functions apart from starting the thing up and it removes with one swish of your finger across the black screen the need to clutter up the dash area with randomly sited buttons and switches. I love it, and my initial foray with the XC90 a while back which left me baf-fled in some areas of its use was quickly forgotten. If you can operate a tablet, this is just as easy.

Opt for the T8 Twin Engine and not only do you enjoy better performance, economy and substantially lower tax costs, also the standard kit is better too. Irrespective of the trim level chosen, all T8 Twin Engine XC90s get a powered tilt and slide panoramic sunroof, four-zone climate control with a cooled glove box, 12.3 active TFT driver information display, that Orrefors crystal glass gearlever knob, seven Drive
