Radio Days

Friday June 5, 2009 will mark not only the end of the school year for Mrs. Anne Murray, the Gifted Push-In Instructor but will also mark the end of her 38 years of teacher.  Mrs. Murray has spent her last 7 years as a teacher in District 91.

Mrs. Murray is a face that has been seen all over the district. She divided her time amongst all the elementary schools teaching enrichment skills weekly.  Her ideas and skills are appreciated not only by the students but teachers as well. Mrs. Murray stated she is going to miss a lot about being at Field.  She is going to miss being greeted in the hall by the students.  She will also miss the camaraderie of the staff, donuts and bagels, and the celebrations of the many milestones of the teachers. Mrs. Murray does note that she will not miss having to get up early or the doting task of having to make her lunch.  Mrs. Murray has stated that she does believe that “parting is such sweet sorrow” and will miss the faculty and students of Field.  We know that we will miss Mrs. Murray as well.  Thanks for all you have done and for your wisdom you have shared Mrs. Murray.

Goodbye Mrs. Murray

Each week, the students at Field-Stevenson School take a break from their schoolwork, to stop and listen to an entertaining radio

broadcast produced by fellow students. Under the direction of Ms. Nowak, students have now begun writing their own radio skits. The program, Character Kids Count, is a weekly radio segment that demonstrates at least one of the six character pillars: trustworthiness, citizenship, responsibility,

fairness, caring and respect. The main writers of the segments are students Mary Gene Miraflores (Station Manager), Kristen Svoboda, Jada Rhodes, and Daejia Middlebrooks. Additionally, students Nicholas Cajigas (Assistant Station Manager), Autumn Skelnik, Jovan Sams, Brandon Bennett, Maya Buenrostro, Morgan McNeal and Treayzure Jones act out many of the parts. Working hard both after school and at lunch, radio crew pre-records its segments with sound effects and music to enhance the production.

A long-anticipating pairing of students from two schools at the pen-pals-in-the-park picnic! Monday, June 1st, was the day chosen for children at Field-Stevenson to meet their pen pals from Betsy Ross at the main park. However, Mother Nature had other plans. Because the rain and drizzle interfered with the planned games and activities, the schedule was shortened and revised to include a sharing of popsicles and T-shirts as well as a visit between pen pals. Students mingled to get to know each other: some played board games; some just chatted.

Students in Grades 2, 3, and 4 from Betsy Ross visited Field-Stevenson for about an hour while Field students K-1 visited Betsy Ross School. These students at the two south side schools will be merging next year into Grade Development Centers, with Grades K-2 at Betsy Ross and Grades 3-5 at Field-Stevenson.
