Lesley Fraser – Assistant to the Principal: Religious Education The birds in this photo have chosen to stay some distance from each other. They seem to echo the cry of many of us "give me some space". In the midst of our busy life, with work, sport and cultural commitments, long traffic lines, endless queues at events, we feel the need to get away from it all. There has been a phenomenal growth in interest in forms of quiet prayer, meditation and yoga. Within our own tradition, we have rediscovered contemplative prayer and this has enriched our lives. Solitude is necessary for our inner growth. It is not the same as loneliness. Nor is it an escape from community or responsibility. In the silence we meet our selves and God and are more ready to meet others at a deeper level. Solitude leads to communion.

We do not necessarily have to find a rock or a beach, though that would be delightful! We can all lock our bedroom door this Lent and find that the indwelling God wants some time with us as much as we do with Him. Let us pray:

TAKE TIME Take time to rest - it is the foundation of health and vitality.

Take time to think - it is the source of achievement. Take time to read - it is the foundation of wisdom. Take time to play - it is the secret of staying young.

Take time to be quiet - it is the opportunity to seek God. Take time to share - it is too short a life to be selfish.

Take time to be aware - it is the opportunity to help others. Take time to laugh - it's the music of the heart. Take time to be loved - it nourishes the soul.

Take time to be friendly - it is the road to happiness. Take time to pray - it is the greatest power on earth.

Take time to dream - it's the well of inspiration. There is time for everything.

- 'There is a season for everything, a time for every occupation under heaven' Ecclesiastes 3:1

A Blessing in Bereavement for the Smith family on the death of Kate May God bless you and be with you in this time of deep sorrow. In the tears of others, know that he weeps with you. In the touch of others, know that his arms are holding you. In the practical work of others, know that he is helping you to cope from day to day. In the words of others, know that he is speaking to you. In the prayers of others, know that he hears you. And in the desolation of this time, know that by each tear, touch, act, word and prayer, others are bringing God’s love to you to filter into those empty spaces with his compassion and understanding.

Project Compassion, Week 2, brings you the story of Elisabeth. Elisabeth is 24 and lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo, one of the world’s most poverty-stricken nations. Here violence and homelessness are widespread. Since 2000, Caritas Australia has supported medical, psychological and economic care to thousands of men, women and children affected by violence. This unconditional acceptance and compassion gave

Elisabeth hope.

Your donation to Project Compassion can help survivors of violence, like Elisabeth, to heal after conflict and to learn skills to earn an income and support her family. Please dig deep into your pockets when you see the students of the Christian Leadership out with their collection boxes at morning tea.

Yesterday the Year 11 Religion and Ethics students were lucky enough to have Emily from Sydney and Margaret from Rockhampton, both of whom work for Caritas Australia talk to them about the different projects that are undertaken by the organisation. We are very grateful to them for giving up their time, inspiring our students to look at social justice issues. What the students heard yesterday will also tie in with the Social Justice unit in term two Religion and Ethics.

Edna Galvin - Assistant to the Principal: Curriculum AFTER EXAMS – SEMESTER CONTINUES Please remember after the exam block – school continues for two full weeks. This will be very important teaching time and students must be present. The semester’s work will continue so that by the beginning of term two the subjects will be at Week 13 of the work programmes with only five teaching weeks to the next exam block because of the lateness of Easter this year. DO NOT GO ON EARLY HOLIDAYS! Exams First exams for the year approach – please ensure you are all aware of the procedures for exams – particularly Year 11 and new Year 12 students.

Exam Procedure - Students 1. Read your exam timetable carefully and note all exams. This is YOUR responsibility. 2. Turn up in plenty of time – half hour before most exams or at 8.25 am for morning exams. 3. Wear full academic uniform. 4. Phone the college if you are going to be late or are ill. Illness will usually require a medical certificate to

be presented when you return to school. You will still be required to complete the exam. 5. Bring all necessary equipment – spare pens, calculators, rulers, erasers, extra batteries etc in a clear

container. You will not be allowed to borrow anything during the exams. Do not bring other materials into the exam.

6. When called over the PA, line up in classes in alphabetical order so that rolls can be marked. This order is also the order that you will sit in for the exam. Follow teacher directions.

7. Dispose of any study notes before you enter the exam room. 8. Once you enter the exam room you must remain silent and not communicate with any other student in any

way. TO DISRUPT AN EXAM IS A SERIOUS BREACH OF THE COLLEGE BEHAVIOUR CODE. 9. During perusal, you may not write your answers, but, in some subjects, you may be able to write notes on

the exam. Remember perusal means read thoroughly, not skim. 10. Read the whole paper during perusal and ask questions at that time. 11. Do not ask teachers how to answer questions – they cannot tell you and it wastes your valuable time. 12. At St Patrick’s you may not leave the exam room until the set time, ie the end of the exam. 13. No food is to be taken into exam rooms and water bottles must be kept on the floor. 14. MP3s, Ipods, Mobile Phones etc are strictly forbidden in the exam room at all times. 15. We are under State and National requirements for the qualifications gained by senior assessment including

exams – these require the college to conduct exams under strict, secure, ethical conditions. 16. Rearranging an exam can only be done under very exceptional circumstances which MUST be disclosed to

the Administration of the college – it is not desirable because of the reasons stated above.

17. SCHOOL NOTICES will be posted on noticeboards each day. Please check these for any important information.

18. If you wish to speak to a supervisor you must stand in your place. Do NOT raise your hand.

Mark Gibbs – Assistant to the Principal: Administration Exams for Year 12 Industry Placement In order to ensure that the Year 12 industry placement students miss the minimum number of teaching days, and to preserve the integrity of the exam block, we ask that students attend school to complete their exams after work on the days the other students sit the same exams. Students are not required to wear school uniform, and may come immediately after work in work clothes if they wish. Students are reminded that some exams are 120minutes, so please begin as early as possible. If there are any problems with attendance, please contact the college (4944 7200). Debating The interschool debating competition has begun, and this year St Pat’s is fielding four teams in the senior competition. Last Tuesday evening, St Pat’s Gold argued that cabbages are better than roses in defeating North Mackay High, and St Pat’s Blue defeated St Pat’s White by arguing that roses were in fact better than cabbages. St Pat’s Red’s debate against Mackay State High has been postponed. This year’s debaters are: St Pat’s Gold: Crispin Scott, Brittany-Elise Johansen, Julia Comben, Malaynee Hayden.

Coach: Mr Mark Gibbs St Pat’s Red: Katie Norbury, Ashleigh Hicks, Alexandra Dowton, Sarah Ryan

Coach: Ms Natalie Pyke St Pat’s White: Madison Humphreys, Jackson Buchanon, Taliesha Harris.

Coach: Mrs Kerry Hine St Pat’s Blue: Tegan Parnicott, Megan Comben, Ashleigh Phelan, Nicole Uren.

Coach: Ms Edna Galvin Guilty Bystander The general principle of the guilty bystander term is self-evident. A guilty bystander is one who stands and watches while others do wrong, without participating but without objection. I was reminded of this during a Religion and Ethics class when issues of guilt and responsibility were being discussed. Some students struggled to understand that the presence of an individual will provide unconscious (or conscious) support for someone who is doing the wrong thing. For example, attendance at a protest that became violent would carry with it the real possibility that those perpetrating the violence would be encouraged by the presence of others around them. It would be, therefore, the responsibility of the individual to demonstrate her disapproval by either actively dissuading the offender, or at least by discouraging the action by departing the scene. Failure to do so not only contributes to the problem, but also leaves the person concerned liable for sanctions similar to the principal offender. There is no need to give examples of the sorts of behaviours that exist in schools that are encouraged by guilty bystanders. There is a real need, however, for students to understand that in life, the penalties for inaction can be as severe as those for actions, and that they vote for and against actions quite explicitly with their presence - by being there.

William Cassells - VET Coordinator A number of students in the College have enrolled in a Certificate II in Retail with TAFE to be completed parallel to their part time job. Two advantages of this is that each will have a qualification that will enhance their employability beyond Year 12, especially those needing to support themselves through further study, and also a valuable 4 points toward the QCE. The first round of industry placements start next week. This is the second last chance for Year 12’s to experience an industry of choice before completing their year. As always, it is important that all protocols are followed with particular attention to attendance, punctuality and industry. While students may not be at the place they will ultimately work, the workplace report is a valuable addition to assembling a resume later in the year. Applications for Year 11 placement in June will be handed out shortly. It is a good time for those that will be involved to consider what their occupation choices might be. Valid choices are essential to avoid disappointment at placement time. It is extremely difficult and highly unlikely that changes will

be made close to the event as the result of a careless option.

Brendon Brauer – Sport Coordinator Aquatics Carnival Unfortunately the St Pat’s Aquatics carnival was postponed last week due to the wet weather restricting some of the planned activities and the limited seating that was available for students at the Pioneer Swim Centre. This decision was made after speaking with the Mackay City Council and Pool staff. The carnival will now be held on Thursday April 14 which is the second last day of term. We are hopeful of more favourable weather that will make the event a more enjoyable experience for both staff and students. As a result, the college Cross Country has been moved to Friday, 29 April. Students are reminded that it is not too late to sign up for the college triathlon or age championship swimming events. Please see Mr Brauer if interested. Capricornia Trials Capricornia trials were held yesterday for 19 years rugby league, hockey, basketball and soccer. A full list of the successful students is still not available but will be printed in next week’s newsletter. Unfortunately for our soccer representatives, their trial was moved from Mackay to Rockhampton due to Mackay fields being too wet. Students are reminded to return their levy and medical forms for these trials well before the day of the trial. Softball State Titles Good luck to Year 11 student, Sharna Beazley who travels to Brisbane this week to represent the Capricornia 19 years Softball team at the Queensland State Titles. Mackay/Whitsunday Futsal Championships Congratulations to all staff and students involved in last week’s Mackay/Whitsunday Open Futsal competition. Our open boys and girls teams competed on Tuesday with one of our open boy’s teams qualifying for the final. The college would like to acknowledge the support of Ms Tracey McLeod, Mr Mark Gibbs and Ms Nicole Graham who prepared our teams for this popular competition.

Futsal Victory (Mr Mark Gibbs) Congratulations to the St Pat’s Boys Futsal team who won the recent interschool carnival. They went through the round robin competition, losing only one game to North Mackay High, and then defeated Holy Spirit College in the semi-final and eventually Sarina in the final 6 - 3. Outstanding players were Dean Berry with 13 goals and Brayden Bate with 9 goals. Beau North, Cameron Stewart and Daniel Coleman also played strongly and were well supported by Sean Young and Damian van den Bergh, whose day was cut short by an ankle injury in the first game.

Three other St Pat’s teams also attended, with our Year 12 girls team just missing out on a semi-final spot. All teams represented the college well.

This has been a very informative expo in the past, where students and their families are able to talk to a wide range of health care professionals. Put the date in your diary now.

BOND University Information Session A representative from BOND University will be at the College on Wednesday 13 April. BOND University is a private University and while the fees are higher, the total time at University is shorter than at Government supported establishments. They offer a range of courses from medicine, humanities, law, business etc. BOND also offers generous scholarships. Students are encouraged to come along and find out more.

Exchange Programmes Students who are considering going overseas on an exchange programme in 2012 should be organizing it now. There are many different companies who run these programmes and who send information to the College. This is all stored in the Counsellor’s office and students are welcome to access it there. Whether it be school, au pair or charity work, so not leave it too late to be finding out more.
