nola de Enfermeria Intensiva y Unidados Coronarios Maria

Carrion Torre has invited the members of the federation to

the beautiful city of Barcelona in Spain. Read a short report

about the results of the meeting.

During the meeting the EfCCNa President Rosa Thorsteinsdottir signed a contract for long

term cooperation with a PCO (Global Conference Support, NL). The planning of the congress

in 2015 is going well. It will be the first EfCCNa congress organized by an own PCO. Place

and dates will be announced in January 2014.

The council audit regarding the visibility of the federation within the national society and in

Europe shows a slightly increase within the last two years and this due to activities the

council has recommended as a standard (e.g. CM report submitted to national organization

and published on website, newsletter, national magazine; promotion of EfCCNa on national

congresses, face book, email signature of Council members etc.)

The European Intensive Care Competency Project which aims to determine standards of

core competencies in intensive care nursing was launched at the Belgrade congress. The

education group has now started to work on the evaluation of the project.

EfCCNa aims to encourage European research that focus on critical care in patients, their

relatives or staff and services. Therefore a research grant over max. 4000 € is provided to

EfCCNa members. Two applications have been received so far. The final decision about the

awards is scheduled for January 2014.

End-of-Life research project: the pilot study about the role of critical care nurses in end-of-

EfCCNa would like to take the opportunity to thank the former Danish representative Mette Ring for

her great commitment with the group.

Mette started her work in EfCCNa in 2006. As a member of the congress organising committee she

took over a major part in organising the 4th EfCCNa and FSAIO Congress in Copenhagen in 2011.

Together with Jos Latour and her Danish colleagues she put a lot of effort in this work and brought

the congress to a success. We thank her very much for all her contributions to the EfCCNa projects

and wish her all the best for her future.

EfCCNa welcomes new Danish Council Member

My name is Iben Tousgaard. I got my Danish nurse authorisation

in 1999 and was graduated as an intensive care nurse in 2004. I have worked 14

years at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen. The department of hepatology has got

patients with acute and chronic liver failure and need of intensive care. My

fascination of critical care nursing started there. I now work at Bispebjerg Hospital in

Copenhagen in an adult ICU with 11 beds. My position as a daily coordinator gives

me the opportunity to work on development of nursing skills, communication,

teaching and ethic conditions of both patients, relatives and colleagues.

I work in a close relation with head nurses and doctors and have a big interest in how leadership and management

influences daily work, flexibility and cooperation among employees.

Beside my job in the ICU, I work with teaching and evidence based nursing.

I joined the board of the Danish association FSAIO in September and was elected for EfCCNa.

I had the pleasure of joining the EfCCNa Autumn Council Meeting in Barcelona this October.

Everything is very new to me, but I was welcomed so great by everyone.

As well it was a pleasure to join the meeting with our former member Mette Ring. I would like to thank her and

everyone in the association for taking such good care of me, introducing me and accepting me immediately.

I will do my best to fulfil my duties as representative and look forward to a great cooperation.

In my personal life, I live with Rasmus. We have three kids 9, 5 and 3 years old. I love to live in Copenhagen with

my family. We have a little house with a lovely garden. In my spare time I like to go to the gym, cook and spend

time with my family and friends.

Thank you, Mette

Guest edited by Prof Julian Bion and Prof Maureen Coombs

This Special Edition is focused on developing our knowledge of the care of patients

nearing the end of their lives in intensive and critical care settings. These patients will

have life-threatening organ system failures, often in the setting of severe chronic

disease, or they may be at risk of developing critical illness and need sensitive

discussions about treatment goals and limitations. We welcome original research

which offers insights into the support of patients, families and professional caregivers

in these care settings. Research is likely to address transitions, as the primary focus of

care moves from prolongation of survival to the alleviation of suffering.

Our aim is to publish rigorous empirical original research, reviews, research methodologies or theoretical

works. We are seeking interdisciplinary contributions from across health and social care that will appeal to

an international audience of clinicians, researchers, managers, educators and policy makers. Papers may

address paediatric or adult critical care or both. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

Prediction and prognosis: Exploring issues of prognostic uncertainty; understanding how

decisions to treat, to limit, to withhold, or to withdraw treatment are made and the resultant impact

on care pathways.

Practical aspects of palliation: Understanding the challenges associated with palliation and

symptom management within these interdisciplinary care settings.

Prevention: Examining the use of advance care planning and advance directives in critical care

settings and the impact of educational or psychological interventions on patients, bereaved families

and professionals. Research into service developments which bridge the gap between palliative

care and intensive care are particularly welcomed.

Perspectives: Investigating end-of-life care in critical care from different perspectives including

those of patients and families, professional care providers or providing cultural, emotional, moral

and legal insights.

News from the Israeli Association of Cardiac and Critical Care Nurses

Page 4 Newsletter 2013/2 November 2013

When I asked my colleagues "what do you think it is important that we send to the EfCCNa

newsletter?” I was flooded with responses.

17 ICU nurses from all corners of the country in the evidenced based ICU group meet once a

month in the lobby of the Tel Aviv Crown Plaza hotel at 8:30 in the morning on our days off.

We munch on our breakfast while we discuss common problems, crises, and frustrations regarding our daily bedside

work.

Our group consists of educators, dean of a nursing school, head nurses, bedside nurses and researchers from the

least experience of 2 years post graduation till post retirement. Some of us rise before we would normally awaken

for a work day- all in common interest of improving our nursing care.

Our first project, 9 years ago, was to systematically review and discover an evidenced based protocol for mouth care

for the intubated patient. Since we found such an abundance of literature including contradictory data, we decided

to investigate what was being done in our country. This led to our first publication:

ICU Nurses’ Oral-Care Practices and the Current Best Evidence DeKeyser Ganz, Farkash Fink, Raanan,

Asher, Bruttin, Ben Nun, Benbenishty, 2009 Journal of Nursing Scholarship, 41:2, 132–138.

We then proceeded to implement a nationwide intervention with the aim of closing the gap between best published

evidence and bedside practice. This intervention did cause many more nurses to adapt their oral care practices to

the best published evidence. This effort was published:

Translation of Oral Care Practice Guidelines Into Clinical Practice by Intensive Care Unit Nurses

DeKeyser Ganz, Raanan, Khalaila, Levy, Arad, Kolpak, Ben Nun, Drori, Benbenishty, 2013 Journal of Nursing Scholar-

ship, 00:0, 1–8.

While we chomp our salads and sip our cappuccinos, we argue the risk benefit of moving our patients out of bed-

where is the evidence? Are we suffering from bullying in our workplace? What is the most current best evidence for

nutritional care in our population? What should we do about open or closed visiting hours? We compare the differ-

ence in our hospital setting and try to help each other find solutions- using systematic reviews, best expert opinion

and inviting speakers to help us clear the uncertainties.

One of our primary goals is to collect the evidence, translate it into Hebrew- our nation's mother tongue, and publish

this evidence in the national general nursing journal.

So far we have published an EfCCNa's position paper on best weaning practices- nurses role in early identification

when the patient is ready to be weaned. This publication has led to some ICUs to change and update their current

practices.

Though one of our multi-center, multi country research projects, we found that nurses feel that they lack skills when

caring for the ICU patient at the end of life. We investigated what their onions and perceptions are regarding the

exact skills that they need. We are proud to announce that we have created an end of life palliative ICU care educa-

tional program for critical care teams. This program has been accepted as a post educational ministry of health rec-

ognized curriculum, giving nurses credit hours.

One of our current projects is to investigate what nurses know about their role in early identification of the septic

patient- once we analyze the results we will plan another nationwide interven-

tion to close the gap between what we should be doing according to the evi-

dence and what we are truly doing.

We are benchmarking – developing the highest standards we can for the Israeli

ICU nurses.

Croatian Nurses Society of anesthesia, reanimation, intensive care and transfusion (Hdmsarist)

held their 6th Symposium from 18 till 19 October 2013 at Hotel Art in Slavonski Brod.

In the morning of 18th October the Board members had the chance to visit the General Hospital

''Dr. Josip Benčević'' where they visit the Intensive care unit, the Emergency department and the

department of transfusion medicine.

In the afternoon the Symposium began with the grand opening after the President of the Society

had welcomed all attendees and participants, also, welcomed from Mayor of city and other local

organizers from the general hospital “Dr. Josip Benčević”

The symposium was attended by 80 odd participants and during this two days 15 lectures

were presented followed by an interesting

discussion.

This is the most important step in our

Society's aspiration for nurses advancement,

and the opportunity to socialize and acquire

new knowledge and experiences.

During the Spring meeting in Belgrade a new proposal for

future congresses was discussed within the Council.

The group decided to hold a 2 yearly EfCCNa owned congress, using a dedicated EfCCNa PCO, rather than using a

different PCO at each congress. In October 2013 EfCCNa was happy to start co-operation with Global Conference

Support, a Dutch company, owned by Babette Schmidt and Ronald Ligterink. In Barcelona the President of EfCCNa,

Rosa Thorsteinsdottir and Babette Schmidt together with Ronald Ligterink signed a contract for future collaboration.

News from the EU Commission on Professional Qualifications

Page 6 Newsletter 2013/2 November 2013

ESNO finally succeeded with the petition to the EU

Committee Internal Market regarding the Recognition

of Professional Qualifications (Directive 2005/36/EC).

The joint action with the European Hospital Pharma-

cists Association (EHPA) was a great boost in getting

specialist nurses recognised. “...the European Parlia-

ment passed the trilogue agreement* on the Profes-

sional Qualifications Directive, including the amend-

ments on the Common Training Framework that

enable the tool to be used for cross-border recogni-

tion of Chapter III specialties (e.g. pharmacy,

nursing, veterinary medicine).

The vote was passed with 592 votes in favour, 29

against and 30 abstentions” (Richard Price, EHPA

Policy Advisor, 09.10.2013.) Committee Rapporteur

Bernadette Vergnaud has also provided some

support. * trialogue means three parties being involved - the

European Parliament, the Council of Ministers and the European

Commission.

EU Commissioner Michel Barnier welcomes the Euro-

pean Parliament vote. “The text adopted today will

make it easier for professionals who wish to establish

themselves or provide their services in other Member

States to have their qualifications recognised, whilst

guaranteeing an improved level of protection for

consumers and citizens. The balance achieved

reflects the spirit of cooperation between the institu-

tions which prevailed during the discussions on

modernising this Directive. I am convinced that the

Council will approve this revised Directive in the

coming weeks so that it can enter into force before

the end of the year.

The European Professional Card – originally an idea

put forward by the European Parliament – is one of

the major changes to this Directive. The use of this

card, which will be proposed for certain professions,

will allow citizens who are interested to obtain the

recognition of their qualifications more easily and

more quickly.

This card is based on the use of the Internal Market

Information System (IMI) and will take the form of

an electronic certificate. Several professions have

already expressed an interest in using this card”.

The Directive contains other measures which will

contribute to encouraging the mobility of professionals

across the European Union and for which Parliament's

support was essential.

Thanks to common training frameworks, the system of

automatic recognition will be extended to new profes-

sions. On the other hand, young graduates wishing to

access a regulated profession will be able to benefit from

this Directive to do all or part of their traineeship

abroad”

http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_MEMO-13-

866_en.htm?locale=en.

“Finally, the reviewed Directive stresses the Continuous

Professional Development (CPD) for nurses and other

healthcare professionals. Being a priority for the

European Commission, this critical issue has been

strengthened in the Directive, in order to ensure that all

the healthcare professionals are able to update their

knowledge, skills and competences regularly”

http://www.efnweb.be/?p=4422

This is the beginning of a presumably long process until

it is put in practice says Françoise Charnai-Sannok,

ESNO Vice President.

However, more news will be available after the ESNO

Council Meeting in Brussels, November 7-8, 2013.
