Crop research boosted

Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Saskatchewan Agricul-ture Minister Lyle Stew-art have just announced $6.5 million in funding for 38 crop-related research projects. “The crop research be-ing done in Saskatche-wan helps keep Canadian agriculture growing and contributing to a strong economy,” says Ritz. “These projects will help improve methods of crop disease control and weather tolerance that will make Saskatchewan farmers more productive and profi table.” “Saskatchewan has a reputation as a leader in crop production and research and these new projects will help to en-

sure this continues to be the case,” Stewart adds. “These projects will help to achieve goals set out in our Growth Plan and help our farmers meet the growing world demand for safe, reliable agricul-ture products.” Crop-related projects receiving funding in 2013 include: • Improved weed man-agement; Improved yields for wheat; Genetic map-ping of blackleg disease in canola; Disease re-sistance in cereals and pulses; Improvements in the nutritional value of oats; New technologies to assess sprout damage in wheat; Herbicide toler-ance in mustard variet-ies; Addressing genetic and disease obstacles to

canary seed production; and Methods to control and eradicate clubroot in canola. Funding for these proj-ects is provided from the Saskatchewan Agricul-ture Development Fund (ADF) and is part of a re-cord $20.4 million provin-cial agriculture research budget in 2012-13, which is an increase of more than 50 per cent since 2007. More than $57 mil-lion in research project funding has been pro-vided through ADF since 2007. This ADF project fund-ing will help to leverage additional third party funding of more than $8.4 million.

Local producers help out Over $88,840.00 of donations by nine Norquay, Saskatchewan area produc-ers are “helping to feed the world.” In December nine area producers presented a cheque to the “Kernels of Hope” program in the amount of $17,768.00. The “Kernels of Hope” program is affi liated with the Cana-dian Food Grains Bank and donations to it result in a matching donation of four dollars to every one dollar by the Canadian International Development Agency. “This resulted in a total donation of

$88,840,” says Fallon Hudye of Hudye Soil Services, who plays a big part in the “Helping Feed the World” project. “The amount donated is to be direct-ed into programs that provide food for those that are in dire need and for the purchase of seed and tools to help farm in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)”, explains Ray Baloun of Minnedosa, Manitoba; who began the Kernels of Hope Program in Norquay, seven years ago.

Feeding the world

Calder School has an-nounced it will be start-ing an archery program thanks to the World of Whitetail’s generous do-nation of archery equip-ment. Rick Stadnek delivered the school’s equipment on Friday, Nov. 16 to a very excited group of students. The package, worth ap-proximately $4,500, con-tains everything neces-sary to start the program. In anticipation of the arrival of the archery equipment, the school had two staff members, two parents and one com-munity member, who is also a substitute teacher, trained in the NASP pro-gram to enable them to teach the students. Archery is a program that easily fi ts into any school physical education curriculum and teaches patience, focus, control and respect to name a few. Many schools are in-cluding archery in their curriculum. The students and staff want to thank the World of Whitetail for providing a great start to a great program. The World of Whitetail is a non-profi t, Saskatchewan, organiza-tion based out of Regina. WOW has good objectives for its organization includ-ing providing outdoor op-portunities for youth and

Dick took out his first gold claim when he turned 16 in the 1970’s and has been involved with precious met-als ever since. An ardent gold panner, he was a regular at the world champi-onship gold panning competition with a personal best of 3rd place in 1984. Now he concentrates on building the wholesale business with jewellers and brokers while taking the roadshow out one or two times a month across West-ern Canada.

We also ac-cept dental gold but it should be clean. Lately I see more and more silver flat-ware sets, but before you bring those in please make sure it says “Sterling” on the handles. There is a lot of silver plated flatware that we can’t buy due to the low silver content” says Dick. Another valuable item is coins with silver content. Dimes, Quarters, Half Dollars and Dollars from Canada and

America can be sorted and the silver content determined in no time at all. PROTZ, DORA - October 14, 1917 - January 5, 2013. Dora passed away on January 5 at age 95. She was born In Theodore, Saskatchewan, and later resided in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. She retired to Edmonton where she has lived for thirty years. She is survived by her daughter Alice (Michael), five grandchildren Car-men, Peter, Alison, Carla, and Kel-ly, ten great grandchildren, as well as her brothers Bill, Nick, and To-ny. She was predeceased by her husband Peter, and her daughter, Margaret (Daryl), and her siblings Todor, John, Steve, Alex, Elmer and Mary. At Dora's request, cre-mation has taken place. The fami-ly extends a very special thank you to Doctor S. Sivalingan, Doc-tor L.
