One of the most com-mon reasons as to why one doesn’t cook from scratch more than they currently do is because of how long it takes to prepare ingredients for the meal. Whether it involves slicing, dicing, measuring, or simply getting ingredients out of the fridge and pantry; let’s face it, these tasks require some time. In a world of horrible pre-cooked, pre-pack-aged foods that are meant to enhance the schedule of our busy lives, I thought it would be practical to discuss options to make food preparation easier, rath-er than avoiding it alto-gether. There are many things one can do in their kitchen to simplic-ity this pre-dinner bur-den. Having to gather fewer ingredients from your pantry not only reduces time, but also makes a recipe easier to approach psychologically too. These tips come from my experience at working in a restaurant. Have a small dish of salt and a pepper mill at your fin-gertips on the counter at all times. Chances are if you’re going to cook, you will need these two cru-cial ingredients. Another great idea is to keep a couple of plas-tic squeeze bottles of oil handy. One could be filled with healthy no-heat/low-heat oil like extra virgin olive oil, and the other with high heat tolerance oil such as grape seed oil, rice bran oil, or even canola oil. You can also arrange spices/herbs that you enjoy using on a regular basis in decorative con-tainers by the stovetop for ease of use. Imagine how inefficient a restau-

rant would be if they had to gather ingredi-ents from around the kitchen for each meal they prepare. Think like a restaurant and you’ll perform like one. Reduce clutter and always have a prep area ready and waiting. Every kitchen should have an open area in close proximity to where the kitchen knives are kept reserved for a pull-ing out a cutting board. If preparing every meal includes a task of de-cluttering your counter-tops, the chances are greater that you will not bother to cook to begin with. If you currently keep your knives in a knife block, then a wall-mounted magnetic strip for your knives may be the perfect solution to creating this vacant counter space. A beauti-ful wood cutting board that you are proud to show off in a permanent location also makes it easier to get started. General accessibility of all cooking utensils, including pots and pans, will also play a big part of your successes in the kitchen. Take some time to reorganize based on your cooking habits and everything will fall into place in a much more efficient manner. Start a collection of recipes that you not only love to eat, but also are comfortable to prepare. Maybe arrange them in

a tablet that you keep in the kitchen or printed in a binder with plastic page covers to make them splatter proof. The decision making process of “what to make” can become one of the larg-est time wasters when it comes to preparing a meal. We all have a col-lection of cookbooks, but we need to take one step farther and create our own assortment of reci-pes from these books that we know and love. A quick flip through this customized compilation will get you moving in the right direction a lot faster. Lastly, consider tak-ing a knife skills course. Chances are you have a kitchen and plan to con-tinue eating food the rest of your life, so the small cost amount of such a course will be an investment and pay you back one hundred fold. This will be a saving of not only your future time, but also your future health as well: Whenever one cooks from scratch, there is a greater ability to control ingredients and ulti-mately what goes into your body. “As a result of our school divi-sion’s participation in Help Me Tell My Story, we are better able to form relationships, open the lines of com-munication, and to establish the partnerships that allow us to con-nect curriculum, classroom, families and communities, which ultimately allows us to truly be able to provide excellence for every learner,” Sas-katchewan Rivers School Division Superintendent of Schools Maureen Taylor adds. “It is exciting to see Help Me Tell My Story being expanded to addi-tional schools and school divisions, so that they too can realize the suc-cess we have experienced.” The Government of Saskatchewan has already implemented several ac-tions that respond to the recommen-dations in the JTF fi nal report, such as increasing Adult Basic Education spaces, expanding child care and Prekindergarten spaces and ensur-ing driver education is available to on-reserve students. The govern-ment is also working with the FSIN

to support the costs for First Nations’ schools to access the provincial PreK-12 Microsoft Licensing Agreement. The government reports it is also working with the FSIN to support the costs for First Nations’ schools to access the provincial PreK-12 Micro-soft Licensing Agreement. The Joint Task Force fi nal report encouraged government to engage in long-term, integrated, multi-year ac-tions grounded in three overarching foundational understandings, which are: dignifi ed mutual relationships; poverty reduction and the prevalence of racism; and recognizing First Na-tions and Métis cultures and lan-guages. In addition to funding from the Ministry of Education, the Govern-ment of Saskatchewan is also in-vesting nearly $50 million in First Nation and Métis post-secondary education and training in 2013-14 through funding from the Ministries of Advanced Education and Econo-my. This enables First Nation and Métis people to develop the skills and knowledge they need to participate fully in the Saskatchewan economy.

People familiar with Saskatchewan’s equine indus-try are invited to nominate individuals, organizations and companies for awards recognizing excellence in animal welfare and health. The Farm Animal Council of Saskatchewan (FACS) and Saskatchewan Horse Federation (SHF) are once again partnering to present the ‘Awards of Distinction for Equine Welfare’ during February’s Saskatchewan Equine Expo. “The Awards of Distinction for Equine Welfare rec-ognize dedication to equine welfare, while serving as a reminder of the importance of exceptional care,” says Krissy Fiddler, SHF Executive Director. “FACS and SHF both see recognizing dedicated rid-ers, owners, drivers and others within the provincial equine industry as fi tting our interest in advancing responsible animal care,” says Adele Buettner, Execu-tive Director of FACS. The partners will accept nominations for the ‘Awards of Distinction for Equine Welfare’ until January 15, 2014. Award recipients will be honoured February 15, 12:00 p.m., Hall A Breakout Room 1 during the Equine Expo at Saskatoon’s Prairieland Park. Nominations will be considered in four categories: • Equine Welfare Innovation – Award of Distinction – The Innovation Award recognizes a person or com-pany for developing a new process, product or source of knowledge that has made a signifi cant impact on the improvement of the welfare of horses in Saskatch-ewan. The honouree will also be saluted for efforts to work collectively with the horse industry to share the innovation. • Equine Welfare Young Steward of the Future – Award of Distinction – The Young Steward Award rec-ognizes a person, between the ages of 13 and 25, who has shown, through practices as a horse owner or in-teraction with others, the importance of a commitment to responsible equine care. • Equine Welfare Leadership – Award of Distinc-tionThe Leadership Award recognizes a person, syndicate or other equine business owner for integrating animal welfare into their core business strategy and setting their own bar higher for expectations regarding ani-mal welfare. The honouree will demonstrate leader-ship and commitment in dealing with issues relevant to animal care. This individual or company leads by example.
