RESIDENTS TELL THEIR STORIES
David and Desiree Merritt and
Natashia James
David Merritt started running the streets of
Oakland when he was thirteen. At first, petty
crime, then dealing drugs. But he ran out of luck
and into prison. Along the way he had a beautiful
daughter, Desiree. Out of prison and with a ten
year clean record, David met Natashia in the
music business: They rented a house. Luck was
back. But then Natashia suffered an injury and
could not work. David was unemployed at the
time. Luck ran out with the rent money and
eviction followed. They found their way to
Bethlehem Inn. Natashia says that, thanks to
the tremendously helpful staff, "We were shown
a lot of resources we didn't know about." David
said "I got a push in the right direction and
learned a different way of thinking about a job."
Natashia and David have both landed jobs and
are training for retail positions. Inn staff worked
with them on a cover letter explaining the
circumstances of their eviction to help them in
meetings with potential landlords. And teenager
Desiree? The school year was over so staff got her
bus passes and helped pay for time at the Boys
and Girls Club. Oh, and there have been clothes
and bikes...and more. David and Natashia are
very clear that their experience at Bethlehem
Inn has been about much more than luck. But
there's been some of that too!

2020 Artisan Showcase
The Artisan Showcase is on track to be held on
Saturday, November 7, 2020 at the Elks Club.
Several vendors have already sent their money in.
Additionally we have a couple of new vendors with
some exciting new items.
As we go forward in this time of the virus it is
hoped that by November things will be back to a
more normal time. We are watching guidelines
closely so we will be in compliance.
If you are interested, please send your money in as
soon as possible so we know how many tables we
will have. Once again, it will be single tables that
will be spaced according to the guidelines. Checks
will not be cashed until October in the event that it
does have to be canceled. We are looking forward
to a successful show. This will be our 13th
Anniversary of hosting this event!
Applications are attached and on the
website under the activities tab.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Indicates spouses/partners/guests are welcome to attend.
COVID NCOB
ACTIVITIES
We are finding that
members would enjoy
meeting in small groups in
a safe, socially distant, outdoor environment
during this pandemic. We want to facilitate
that as much as possible.
We have thought that neighborhood groups
could choose a nearby park, or a members
large deck or yard, and have a morning
coffee or afternoon cocktails together. We
would also like to celebrate birthdays by
holding a monthly Birthday Club for those
that were born in the same month.
In order to accomplish this, we need your
help. PLEASE go online and update your
profile page. We need you to fill in your
BIRTHDAY MONTH.
While you are there, please check to see that
you have the correct address and contact
information on your profile. Some of you
have moved and not yet updated your
information. And it would be a perfect time
to either add or change your profile picture.
You must use a picture that has “portrait”
orientation, otherwise your picture will not
look right on your page. Be sure to check all
your other information at the same time.
The easiest way to access your page is to go
to our website at
www.newcomersclubofbend.org and find
your name just under the yellow welcome
banner. Click it and then click the Edit
Profile Button. Be sure to choose SAVE
before you leave.
LET’S GET TOGETHER SOON!
FUN FACT
Central Oregon has ties with
NASA. During the summer of
1966, twenty-two astronauts trained for the
upcoming moon landings at Lava Butte, Lava
River Cave, and Newberry Crater!

We have 310 members.
Luncheons
There is no July luncheon. The August luncheon and speaker will be held via Zoom. Future luncheons will be decided on a month by month basis.
Activities and Events
Survey responses have shown that members would like to see activities start up again, but only small outdoor activities, where social distance can more easily be maintained. Watch the newsletter and your email for small group activities, including “In The Park,” a small gathering in a city park for members to sit and chat.
NCOB Forums
A Forums section has been created on the NCOB web site, where we can all share ideas, find people to meet up with, and share local information. Be sure to check it out!
