brand news songs with thesame titles of past hits ? The latestoffender is Eden Kane, who haswritten, for Shane Fenton, "Fool'sParadise"-the same title as an oldhit by the Crickets. A few weeksago, Jess Conrad was heard singing" Take Your Time "- a differentsong to Buddy Holly's hit title.Cliff Richard recorded "A Girl LikeYou" a few months after AdamFaith featured the same title on hisfirst LP.

Acker Bilk plays his own compo-sition "Lonely" two years after aminor hit by Eddie Cochran called" Lonely ". Adam Faith sings" Lonesome " with a few years' gapbetween it and Monty Sunshine's hitof "Lonesome". A few years ago,Rhet Stoller had a hit with" Chariot ". Pet Clark's latest ?"Chariot". A big hit by NancyWhiskey was "Greenback Dollar";pow come the Kingston Trio with adifferent song with the same title.

Out of these I have mentioned(there must be many others), onlyCliff, Adam and Acker make thetop charts with their songs, andsurely it was only their names thatsold their respective discs.

It can't possibly help the salesof these "copy" titles to have oldtitles, so why do song writers churnthem out? Any why do publishersuse them ?

MAY I comment on the remarkmade by two of the Beatles in

last week's NRM ? They state thatB. J. Kramer will take over fromthe place which Elvis is at themoment leaving vacant. Utter rub-bish. I admire the Beatles' talentvery much when it comes to sing-ing, but I do wish that they wouldleave the wishful thinking to some-one else. I have just heard thisnew Liverpudlian and his group,and fail to see how he falls intothe same class as Elvis. Not that Iam undermining this boy's talent,although I personally do not likehim, but it is like saying that Elviswill take over from Sinatra. Howcan a newcomer like this hope todo what Cliff Richard has been sounsuccessfully trying to do foryears ? El is established for along time to come, " One BrokenHeart " or not; time will tell !-D.S. THE ROLLING STONES GENUINE R & B !AS the trad. scene gradually subsides, promoters of all kinds

of teen -beat entertainments heave a long sigh of reliefthat they have found something to lake its place. It's Rhythmand Blues, of course-the number of R & B clubs that havesuddenly sprung up is nothing short of fantastic.

One of the best-known - and one of the most successful todate-is at the Station Hotel, Kew Road, in Richmond, just onthe outskirts of London. There, on Sunday evenings, the hipkids throw themselves about to the new "jungle music" like theynever did in the more stinted days of trad.

And the .ombo they writhe andtwist to is called the Rollin' Stones.Maybe you've never heard of them-if you live very far away fromLondon the odds are you haven't.

But by gad you will ! The Rollin'Stones are probably destined to bethe biggest group in the R & Bscene if it continues to flourish. Andby the looks of the Station Hotel,Richmond, flourish is merely anunderstatement considering thatthree months ago only fifty peopleturned up to see the group. Nowclub promoter bearded GiorgioGomesky has to close the doorsat an early hour-over four hun-dred R & B fans crowd the hall.

GENUINEAnd the fans who do come

quickly lose all their inhibitions andproceed to contort themselves tothe truly exciting music of the boys-who put heart and soul into theirperformances.

The fact is that, unlike all theother R & B groups worthy of thename, the Rollin' Stones have a

definite visual appeal. They aren'tthe Jar/men who were doing trad.eighteen months back and who haveconverted their act to keep up withthe times. They are genuine R & Bfanatics themselves, and they singand play in a way that one wouldhave expected more from a colouredU.S. R & B team than a bunch ofwild, exciting white boys who havethe fans screaming-and listening-to them.

Lineup of the group is MickJagger. lead vocal and harmonicaand student at the London Schoolof Economics. The fierce backingis supplied by Brian Jones, guitarand harmonica, and also spokes-man and leader of the group. He'san architect, while Keith Richards,guitar, is an art student. The otherthree members of the group are BillWyman, bass guitar, Ian Stuart,

piano and maraccas, and drummerCharles Watts.

Record -wise, everything is in theair, but a disc will be forthcoming.It will probably be the group's ownadaptation of the Chuck Berrynumber, "Come On" (featured onChuck's new Pye L.P.). The num-ber goes down extremely well in theclub's session on Sundays - otherChuck Berry numbers that are inthe group's repertoire are "Downthe Road Apiece" and "Bye, Bye,Johnny"-which is one of the high-lights of the act.

DISC/FILMEven though the boys haven't

dead -certain plans for a disc, theydo have dead -certain plans for afilm. For club promoter Giorgiois best known as a film producer,and he has made several imagina-tive films dealing with the musicscene. But for the Rollin' Stonesfilm, there are some truly greatshots of the team in action, singingand performing "Pretty Thing", theBo Diddley number. The film itselflasts for twenty minutes, and willbe distributed with a main featurefilm.

The group are actually mad aboutBo Diddley, although pianist Ian isthe odd man out. Diddley numbersthey perform are "Crawdad", "Nur-sery Rhyme", "Road Runner","Moaner" and, of course, "BoDiddley".

They can also get the sound thatBo gets too - no mean achieve-ment. The group themselves are allred-hot when k comes to U.S. beat

discs. They know their R & Bnumbers inside out and have arepertoire of about eighty songs,most of them are the numbers whichevery R & B fan in the countryknows and near enough loves.

The boys are confident that, ifthey make a disc, it should do well.They are also confident about theirown playing, although on Sundaysat the end of the session at Rich-mond they are dead -beat. That'sbecause on Sunday afternoons theyalso play the R & B session at theKen Colyer Club.

SUPERFICIALBut despite the. fact that their R

& B has a superficial resemblanceto rock 're roll, fans of the hitparade music would not find anyfamiliar material performed by theRollin' Stones. And the boys donot use original material-only theAmerican stuff. "After all," theysay, "can you imagine a Britishcomposed R & B number-it just

wouldn't make it."One group that thinks a lot of the

Rollin' Stones are The Beatles.When they came down to Londonthe other week, they were knockedout by the group's singing. Theystayed all the evening at theStation Hotel, listening to thegroup pound away. And now theyspread the ward around so much inLiverpool that bookings for thegroup have been flooding in - in-cluding several at the famed Cavern.

All this can't be bad for the R& B group who have achieved theAmerican sound better than anyother group over here. And thegroup that in all likelihood will soonbe the leading R & B performersin the country. . . .

'HEART' -LOWEST FOR SIX YEARS!Facts about "One Broken Heart" -it's Elvis's worst selling current

single since "Rip It Up". Although some HMV releases did not get tothat position after this one -they were in competition with RCA discs -and usually more than one -at the same time.

Also Elvis SHOULD have been at his strongest at the time of therelease of "One Broken Heart" -for no less than SIX discs before thatone had reached the top spot.

Nevertheless we can't help thinking that El. isn't suffering more thana temporary setback. Thirty discs in the top ten in seven years can't bebad.

What, you may say, about his L.P.s and E.P.s. Well, we haven't for-gotten them. Here's a list -but without chart positions. E.Ps. first :LOVE ME TENDER/Poor Boy/Let Me/We're Gonna Move 7EG8199GOOD ROCK IN' TONIGHT/Blue Moon Of Kentucky/Just Because/

MARK WHY I FLOPPEMark Wynter explainsthe flop of 'Aladdin's

Lamp' -and why he hasreverted to cover versionsWHY did Mark Wynter's

"Aladdin's Lamp " flipthen flop ? Most of the reviewersliked it and rated it a usefulfollow-up to his previous coupleof hits. But the fans turned uptheir noses and downed theirthumbs.

Said Mark this week: " Onreflection, I think it failedbecause it wasn't a sufficientlyPERSONAL type of song. I'msure I need that personal touchon lyrics .. . like on Go AwayLittle Girl'.

COVER JOB"Each singer has to find a style

which suits him best. 'Aladdin'sLamp,' after all, turned out to bemuch too general in its approach."

Mark added that he felt his newone, also loudly hailed, was in the" Go Away Little Girl " vein. It'scalled " Shy Girl "-a cover of theCascades' American offering.

Failure of " Aladdin's Lamp "means that Mark has had to departfrom the originality angle. He's longbeen AGAINST " cover jobs," butthe truth is he gets his hits onlyfrom covering. And a furtherapparent necessity is that his hitshave to be made in a dead roarin'hurry. . . .

" This one was like Go AwayLittle Girl ' and ' Venus '," he said." All rushed. Sessions on the Satur-day -and I had a copy by themiddle of the following week.Seems to bring me luck, this having

to rush."

But Mark pointed out that whenhe first heard " Shy Girl " he wastold it was the " B " side of theCascades' disc. Only after he'dagreed it as his new one did heand Tony Hatch find out it was theselling side in the States.

This new disc is clearly impor-tant for the restoration of Markto the charts. And for anotherreason -the flip side, " Because ofYou," is his first effort at song -writing.

FOUR TITLESSaid Mark: " It was a lousy,

rainy old day up in Newcastle.The compere of our show, AlPaige, and I were stuck in ourhotel room, moaning because we'dseen all the local movies.

" So I somehow got this tunein my mind. I worked it over afew times and then found the lyricswere forming in my nut, too. I sangit over to Al, who thought it wasall right.

" Anyway, I didn't 'think anymore of it until we got to therecording session. We wanted tocut four titles. Let Me Take HisPlace ' was to be one, but I didn'tlike it. Then we toyed with ' CoverGirl,' but it didn't seem right. So

I told Tony about MY song -andhe agreed we should try it.

" Since then, I've written anothertwo numbers. I've got my ownpublishing company, so they'llprobably go through that set-up.It's become an interesting newhobby of mine . . ."

Mark, as ever, remains one of themost heavily booked popsters inthe business, with hardly any timeoff between now and the end ofthe year. He's doing a pantomime

again,where.

" Just hope it's Buttons,' inCinderella '," he said. " I think

that's just about the best part ofthem all. It's a PERSONAL sortof part, which suits me fine."

If Mark had his own "Aladdin'sLamp," I know what one of hiswishes would be.

And it should come true. " ShyGirl " should see him riding nicelyin the charts.

Buddy Brings BackThe Big Beat . . .

THE fast style "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" has proved to beone of the fastest sellers Buddy Holly has had in his lengthy

chain of hits. His powerhouse performance of the vintage ChuckBerry number caught on like wildfire shooting the number into thehit lists within days of release. The single gives the hit paradean interesting backward glance at the style of five years ago whenthe big beat predominated.

This may well account for "Handsome Man's" popularity, for itis far faster than most discs made today and like the rock songsissued between 1956 and 1958 it generates tremendous excitement,which record buyers seem to still want but don't always getthese days.

Following hard on the heels of Buddy's hit, Coral rushed hislong player "Reminiscing" into the shops. The title track wascomposed by Atlantic sax recording star King Curtis, who, with theCrickets, accompanied Buddy at the session when "Reminiscing"was recorded.

Buddy was a great admirer ofKing's sax style and insisted heshould be featured on the recording.King's special stutter -sax sound canbe heard on several Coasters discs,including their new LP "CoastingAlong", where he gives a particu-larly way-out performance on "WaitA Minute"-a song Bobby Darinpenned.

The LP tracks "Wait 'til the sunshines Nellie", "Reminiscing", aredifferent from the versions on thehit single last autumn. On the albumthe tinkling guitar is blended with

He's a six-footer, aged 21,who has made fair noise withhis "Little Girl" debut single forDecca. It sold a thousand a dayfor quite a while .. but sufferedeventually because Lee had beenbooked for a month in the StarClub, Hamburg, and was unableto give the plugging his personalattention.

Now he's back and rarin' to go.New disc plans are being workedout right now.

When Lee turned up for ourinterview, a girl with me said: "Ifanybody talks about Liverpoolgroups again, I'll scream. I'm fedup with hearing about them."

Lee is from Liverpool. So is hisgroup, the All -Stars. He arrived.The girl didn't scream. Instead.she looked distinctly shaky andwavered, vocally: "I think Liver-pool is marvellous for producingall those groups .. , ."

FOOTBALLLee has that effect on the bird

fraternity. He's tall, wavy-haired,dear of eye, athletic -looking. Soc-cer, in fact, is his main off-stagehobby and he's a useful centre -halfor full-back.

Once upon a time, he wasapproached by a director of Ever -ton Football Club, potentialLeague champions this year, andasked to join the club's colts' XI.He has a collection of twelvetrophies gained in the game and hasled his own team, Braybank Foot-ball Club, to two successive localcup victories.

"That might have been the gamefor me", said Lee. "But I turnedto singing instead. Can't say Ihonestly regret the decision."

Lee was educated at the St.Francis de Sale School in Liver-pool and was singing by the ageof 17 in a local skiffle group.

"But the sea seemed to call me".he says. "I heard the call andcleared off in the Merchant Navyfor a while. I wasn't in too long-and went back to civvy street asa bus conductor."

It all started when he was askedto stand in for the resident singerwith a rock group and was such ahuge success that later on, with hisown group, he was booked intoLiverpool's Storeyville Jazz Club.

His acceptance was immediate.In no time at all, he was bookedin as the club's resident vocalist.

Then came a debut ballroombooking at the Birkenhead Majes-tic. Fantastic scenes. A team ofstrong-arm stewards were needed torescue him from his ever-increasingband of followers. That led to aten -week booking.

RETURNSAll over the North country, he

created the "return booking" story.Top Rank ballrooms built the "LeeCurtis Show" round his personality.And he worked with ' Jerry LeeLewis, which remains one of themost vivid memories of his shortcareer.

Then, on March 20, he wentover to Germany, to join theswinging beat scene that is Ham-burg. That too led to a returnbooking. But Lee is chary aboutspending too much time away fromBritain from now on as he feelshe'd like to get his recording careerunder way with the maximum of

personal appearances. But he didget a contract with Philips'sDeutsch Records on the continent.

"It was hard work over there",he says. "Long sessions and lotsof social life, But it was all wellworth while. Joe Flannery, mymanager, is trying to get me backjust as soon as I get the time."

Lee returned to Liverpool withenthusiasm because his fans hadlaid on a special "return home"party, which was a real wow ofan evening. It underlined againhow popular he is with the North-ern audiences.

He said: "All the boys in thegroup got stacks of fan-tmail whilewe were away. Trouble was wehad to answer them all even thoughwe were dead tired with all thework. But we feel -the fans are all-important so I guess we didn'tmind too much in the end".

It WILL all happen for Lee Curtis-I'm sure of that. He creates apeculiarly dynamic sound which iswell up to the recent hit -makersand discs from his home town,

the backing of this oldie, and somemore subtle guitar work on"Reminiscing". The reason is thatthe L.P. was intended for Stereorelease in the States, so more back-ground instruments had to be addedto bring out the disc when it wasplayed Stereo. (The disc is inciden-tally well up the U.S. Stereo charts).

HAPPYBuddy's own guitar and the Fire-

balls are featured in the backing ofmost of the tracks on this latestLP. The latter group have a verysimilar style to Buddy's when hewas with the Crickets so they blendwell on these recordings. The 11track package was rushed into theshops to cater for enormousdemand and is already a best-seller.The very unusual sleeve showsBuddy looking out of a porthole inthe 'plane on a flight with theCrickets to Australia. His managerNorman Petty took the shot on histine camera.

The sleeve notes were written byBuddy's parents Ella and Law-rence 0. Holley of Lubbock,Texas. Of their son's latest hit theysay: "Noiman Petty, who recordedBuddy's musical life, added theyoung, exciting sound of a musicalgroup called the Fireballs. We feelthat the combination, sound -wise, isa happy one!"

Buddy's next single is likely to beanother track from his new LP-"Bo Diddley"-says Coral's TonyHall. Featuring excellent guitar anddrum accompaniment Buddy's ver-sion of the song has an unusualrhythm switch near the end and if itis put out on a single this catchybacking should help it to sell.

II is already Buddy's first singlehit in the States for many years-but there it is coupled with "TrueLove Ways" a single hit for Buddyback in 1960.

Of Buddy's still unissued materialNorman, who has recorded millionsellers by Buddy, The Crickets, theFireballs, Bobby Vee, the String -alongs and Buddy Knox in hisClovis, New Mexico, studios, says:"We can assure you that many goodthings will come from this sourceand all in due time". He goes on topoint out "Many things have to beironed out before the path is madeclear for a release", adding "thefans in your country have beenwonderful to understand this andall of us here appreciate the loyaltymost of your young people haveshown for the great talent of BuddyHolly."

This will add to the fury of asmall but vociferous band ofrhythm and blues fans who arealready complaining because Buddyhas had a hit with "Handsome,Man" while Chuck Berry's fiveyear old original version has neverbeen issued here. "Bo Diddley" wasput on wax some time ago by theAmerican r & b singer of the samename.

"Bo Diddley" was waxed by theShadows on a recent LP and wasinchsded with "Peggy Sue" and"Well . . . all right" on the LP"Bobby Vee meets the Crickets",which also contains two ChuckBerry songs, "Sweet Little 16" and"Little Queenie". Bobby and theCrickets are making a follow-up tothis LP but they don't plan to in-clude any of Buddy's songs thistime.

Just out over here is the Crickets'first Liberty LP in their own rightwhich revives "Love Is Strange"and vintage tunes associated withFats Domino, Ray Charles, DonGibson, Johnny Otis, the Coastersand Eddie Cochran.

In America the group's (andBuddy's) first album "The ChirpingCrickets" has been re -issued underthe title "Buddy Holly and TheCrickets". Now also available instereo it has the same tracks butuses the unattractive sleeve pictureof the group's first British EP "TheSound Of The Crickets".

has insisted that all Buddy's mastersmust be cleared through his studiobefore release and he lays greatemphasis on the care taken indubbing Buddy's work: "It is ouraim to see that the trust placed inus to the best of our ability is wellearned," he declares.

Norman goes on to say: "We doplan to use the services of the Fire-balls on many of the future re-leases of tapes in our files and youcan be assured that they will be intop form for it is not our desire torelease any tapes recorded here thatwould be anything but complimen-tary to the memory of BuddyHolly".

Concludes Norman, "We want allof the fans of his talents to knowthat we take extra time . . . muchtime, in fact . . . to see that we are

NO matter what you have read,no matter what you have

heard, watching Jerry Lee Lewison stage always produces a pro-found shock for the ears, theeyes and for the very soul. Thiswas the case at BirminghamTown Hall last Monday on theopening night of Jerry's newBritish tour.

Jerry, resplendent in whitetrousers and black coat, oncemore exceeded all accepted per-forming limitations to keep hisaudience literally on their toes.

His soul -shattering show con-sisted of ten numbers, nine ofwhich completely stopped theshow, and the tenth, a ballad"You Win Again", providing anadmirable contrast.

After this, the relentless beatcarried us through to the fan-tastic finish, through "GreatBalls Of Fire", "What'd I Say",a great, new version ; "WholeLotta Shakin' Goin' On", whichstill defies description ; "GoodGolly Miss Molly", which, judg-ing by its reception, could easilyre-enter the top thirty ; and thefinale, "Hound Dog".

What Jerry does on stage isso beyond the realms of humanimagination that no one canfully anticipate the aura of sheermagical excitement which hecreates. Suffice to say that he ishere again, and firing on allcylinders, just waiting to dishout the thrills to his eager fans.

UITAR rather like "Walk RightIn" opens this revival of the

Larry Williams rock 'hit of manyyears back. But if anyone expectsa great beat disc-they'll be dis-appointed. A watery chorus plodsits way through the song singingrather out -of -tune in places. Rathera terrible disc.

Faster style square dancy typeflip, with a bit more life than onthe top side. But it's still a ratheruncommercial disc without toomuch appeal.

It's a goodsong very similar to all the othercommercial folk ditties. He singswell, of course, and there's theusual Nashville piano sound to it,plus the chorus. Not his best, butinteresting all the same. Mediumtempo, average lyrics and tune.

Flip was the big U.S. hit forTony Bennett-it's a good songwith perhaps more appeal on theother side of the Atlantic. But it'sgood and strong and likeable. Andwith a lot of appeal. Tuneful balladnice backing and good vocalising.

on this number, which is arather run -of -the -mil teen ballad,with a fair chance of success. It'swell -performed all round, withJohnny singing in a goodly manner.Not bad, with a little bit morethan the usual disc of this type-medium tempo, good tune, notmuch lyrically, but with a goodhit appeal.

Johnny wrote the beatier flipwhich like the top side has anaccompaniment directed by KenJones. Good guitar work and somegood singing by Johnny. It's some-what off -beat and has some appealbut not commercially.

THREE sssJERRY LEE LEWISTeenage Letter; Seasons Of MyHeart (London HLS 9722)THIS is Jerry's latest disc, issued

to coincide with his visit here.Piano opening with a fast beat, andJerry rockin' away in his usualstyle with plenty of drum -work andsome good vocalising and an excel-lept sax solo. It's a fast -mover,with plenty of hit potential-not asstrong as some of his, but enter-taining nevertheless.

Flip has his sister, Linda Gail,on with him. It, too, opens with* piano, but it's slower and a lotmore bluesy. They harmonise welland have a good sound together.We liked it a lot.

JOHNNY CLIVEChina Girl; Sue (Oriole CB 1820)SSEMI-CHINESE sounds on this

ballad from Johnny who singsrather well in a breathy sort ofway. It's a well -made number withlittle Chinese voices intruding onthe number. Fair stuff that couldsell quite well. Tuneful and good.

Faster ballad on the flip a"Riders In The Sky" type of thingwith a femme chorus in the back-ground. Somewhat John Leyton-ish.Quite entertaining, too. Fast-ish and well made.

FROMthe film of the same name,

this one is a gentle, ratherdelicate, type instrumental per-formed by Elmer in his usual style.It's rather fragile with a good littletune, and some excellent supportfrom the chorus of mixed voicesbehind the medium -slow number.Gentle and pleasing but not com-mercial.

Flip, like the top side is one ofElmer's compositions. It's a ratherSpanish -flavoured number withsome " Lonely Bull " sounds hereand there. Good stuff well playedat a medium tempo, with mutedtrumpets and strings alternatelyfaking the lead.

THE EMERALDSThe Kerry Dancers; Little WhiteLies (HMV POP 1157)SLOW vocalising starts off this

number-then a huge bit ofguitar beat beats out the familiartune which moves along well in therock tempo. Femme chorus lightlysinging on wordlessly. It's a goodmover and could be an unexpectedhit. Well performed.

Flip has the girls singing on it,the lyrics of the song in places. Ofcourse it's the oldie brought up todate with a good array of guitarwork. We liked it a lot.FOUR SSSS

THE POLKA DOTSRun Run Senorita; The CostaBrava (Philips BF L 247)THIS is also out by the Wan-

derers, a U.S. big voiced malevocal group. This version is apowerful swinging disc with plentyof what it takes, and a nice catchyLatin flavour, with some goodwork from all concerned. Wereckon it could be a surprise hit-and it's good good all the way.But maybe the teen set will tend toignore it.

Flip is a lot gentler but is stillpretty fast-moving and wild inplaces. The untra-modern swingvocal group sounds good on almosteverything.

DON, DAVID, AND DEANWell You Started It; Nevertheless(HMV POP 1159)HARMONICA-not the R & B

variety-opens this latest teamdisc which has a definite BrookBrothers flavour about it. It's a teennumber with a fair tune and a lyricthat isn't so bad. Not really com-mercial enough for the charts, butgood enough to garner a few saleshere and there. Gets good in parts.

Guitar opens the flip-the oldstandard that they haven't exactlydone credit too. Their voices aregood but the whole thing lacks anyatmosphere.

ROGER WILLIAMSOn The Trail; Cold Cold Heart(London HL R 9714)QAID to be the biggest -selling" pianist in the world, RogerWilliams punches out "On TheTrail" with simplicity but effective-ness. Rather a persistent little right-hand melody line, with, nothing toomuch going on in the background.Rather more commercial, too, thanmany of has singles. "Cold ColdHeart" is more in his semi -classicalstyle to start with. Charmingly per-formed but decidedly more squarethan "On The Trail".THREE S SS

Kingston Trio with a country-ish type number with loads of un-amplified guitar work, and a per-formance that builds and builds,with some very good sounds fromthe backing, and the group. Weliked the number and it has animmediate appeal. Good stuff,medium tempo, repetitive and witha good tune. Could be a bit.

Johnny Cash, well-known C & Wsinger wrote the flip, a number withthe same cowboy feel as side one,but not the commercial appeal.

He demon-strates a voice of useful range andstyle. Flip is more robust generally.Vern sings out with enthusiasm asthe guitars chop and change behindhim, Choir, too. the group handle an instru-mental very well, with organ andguitar leading. Not a considerableamount of beat, but with somethere. A fairly pleasant tune, butnot outstanding in any respect.Well played.

Flip comes from the Bob Hopefilm " Call Me B'wana," and likeside one directed by John Berry.It's again a rather nondescriptthing with plenty of liveliness.

Beaty flip with an insistent backingand a rockin' tempo from the boywho hit the big spots with "WildOne" etc. It's a good song withBobby in good form and a certainamount of commercial appeal onthe big sounding number.FOUR S

One to watch ...couldprove a surfin' surprise. Fastertempo for the flip, the surfing themeis there again. But it isn't really ascommercial as the "Swanee" side,though well performed.

NOT the Connie Francis hit of thesame title, this is a well -per-

formed medium paced jerky semi -beat effort, with Mary singing quitewell. There's a fair chorus behindher, but the whole atmospheredoesn't suggest chart appeal.

Flip has a good bubbly backing,and some interesting sounds, andonce again Mary sings well. Gim-micky number with plenty ofappeal, it's not too bad.

THREE STHE BROTHERS FOUR55 Days At Peking; All for theLove of a Girl (CBS AAG 146).THE top side is from the film of

the same name. It's a bubblylittle number with a touch of thefolk stuff in it. Rather entertainingwith good lyrics and a fastish pace.Could catch on we think.

The flip was also the flip ofJohnny Horton's U.S. hit " Battleof New Orleans." It's a tenderballad with some good lyrics anda good tune. Fair stuff.FOUR SSSS

(Liberty LIB 55563)MISS DE SHANNON is supportediv a. by echo and an intriguing un-amplified guitar backing which isboth plaintive and haunting. Shesings well in the Timi Yuro mannerand the song builds and builds fromthe virtually simple intro to a bigbig climax. We liked the mediumpaced exciter in which she singsvery well. Already a hit in theStates-it could do the same here.

Flip is slightly faster but againwith a flavour of echo about it. Verymuch like Brenda Lee in places it'srather good on the whole. We likedit.

AGENTLE little piece from Mikeon this trad effort that moves

along softly and quite nicely really.It's a familiar piece with a con-siderable beat, and not too muchsacrificed for commercial appealGood drum work on the number,which has a sort of introvert flavour.Much, much better than the usualrun-of-the-mill trad stuff.

Flip is a jazzed up version of theoldie which was recently in thecharts for the late Patsy Cline, andbefore then for the Marcels. There'sthe usual gruff voice and the trad.workout that we all know like thebacks of our hands.

States, this latest from RayE may well do far better than hisE similar titled " Don't Set Me

Free." It's a revival of the oldE country number sung in the

" You Don't Know Me " vein.= It's a pretty song sung with

plenty of emotion by Ray, whowrings out every possible inter-pretation from the lyric. Goodbacking, with some excellent

= piano work, and a slow tempoF... throughout. Should make the

twenty.Slower tempo on the flip, the

kind of number you mightexpect at a night-lub per-formance. Band backing withplenty of emotion and a ratherold-fashioned flavour.

GEORGE MAHARISRoute 66; Lollipops And Roses(Columbia DB 7035)"(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66"is a semi -rock ditty that isn't exactlywhat we're used to hearing fromGeorge. Well -performed it swingsconsiderably with a shrill femmechorus backing him. Not chart stuffthough.

Flip is a lot slower and it's theJack Jones U.S. hit of some monthsback. It's a pleasing song that hasbecome a standard and Georgemakes a fair job of it. But we'veheard better.THREE S

GEORGE 'Route 66' MAHARIS

BERNARD CRIBBINSThe Bird On the Second Floor;Verily (Parlophone R 5025).THE very successful Mr. Cribbins

has a go at another semi -comedy number. More in the vocalvein this time - unfortunatelyprobably. Yet it's very appealingand moves at a fastish pace witha jolly little backing and some fairlyrics courtesy Messrs. Dicks andRudge. Not bad, but not as goodas his other efforts.

The flip has some harpsichordsounds and, of course, a rather old-fashioned sound a la Benny Hill.Not too bad, but again not toofunny.

THREE SS'THE ECHOESThe Happy Whistler; Sticks andStones (Fontana TF 392).THE old hit is given a new flavourA by The Echoes, who add an

organ to the usual instrumental typetreatment of the tune. It's not toobeaty, but it may sell quite wellowing to the familiarity of the tune.

Flip is the Ray Charles numberplayed on the organ with a beatbacking. Far faster with plenty ofinteresting work from all concerned.Slightly bluesy and with someappeal.

TOP 20 TIPERNIE MARESCALove Express; Lorelei (LondonHLU 9720).MR. MARESCA was the guy who" had a big Stateside hit with" Shout, Shout " some monthsback. This one is another fastishrock disc with plenty of noisysounds everywhere. A shrill femmechorus and a good tune-it couldsell reasonably well. Yet he sings,we think, rather like Bill Haley.

Ernie spells out the name of hisflame on the slower flip, a powerfulmedium -pace rocker with morechorus work again. Not too bad,but he's done better.

from Mark Valentino of " ThePush and Kick " fame some timeback. Again it's a jerky, blurredbeat effort with Mark shouting hisway through the average rocknumber. Band work behind him,and plenty of gimmicks. But hardlya tune or lyrics anywhere in sight.

More fast tempo stuff on the flip,again a U.S. Bonds type of thing.Better probably than side one butstill nothing to shout about. Whichis exactly what Mark does.TWO S S

MANDY MASONA Tear In My Eye; A Sweet Love(Parlophone R 5038).QWEET little voice from Mandy" on this appealing number witha good tune and a decent backing.Rather Shirelles-y in places, it wasrather good with plenty of JohnnyKidd type backing sounds. She's gota good voice on the jerky songwhich moves at a medium pace.Could reit make the charts sooneror later.

The Crickets song is given a goodtreatment on the flip. She sings wellon it again. She's rather like afemale Buddy Holly.

charts is this Ray Charles in-spired number. The lead voice justyells "Yeah," "Shake That Thing",etc. all the time, while the organgives us a big Chris Montez beat.And that's all. But the fast atmos-pheric number whips up a veritablestorm.

More organ work on the flip,another repetitive semi-bluesy--number with a great beat laiddown. Fair once more.

Male chorus backs Billy inthis number which is a mediumtempo rocker with plenty ofbeat thrown in and some power-ful vocalising from Bill. Butnot as good or commercial asside one.

TOP 20 TIPJIM REEVESWelcome To My World; MyJuanita (RCA Victor 1342)STRINGS, mellow and pleasing

open the latest from country -styled hitmaker Jim Reeves. He'shad a lot of biggies, and this maywell be one of them. It's a slowishballad with a good melody line, anda goodly lyric. Chorus softly backshim up on the effort and it hasa grow -on -you flavour. We likedit and reckon it for a cert. topfifty disc.

Latin-ish gu:tar work on the flip,a number with Jim ably supportedby a chorus that helps things alongvery well on the slow -medium num-her. It's got a haunting flavourand is in typical Reeves style. Againa good side.

EX -TORNADO member on a

Joe Meek recording of a JoeMeek number-from Heinz's movie"Farewell Performance". It's a

pretty ballad, with excellent lyrics-and given an echo -loaded treat-ment. Backing at times seems alittle too busy but it could easilybe a first-time hit for Heinz -especially with his huge personalfollowing. Flip is wilder, again abit busy, but bearing all the hall-marks of a Meek session. It's a

rocker. Nothing like as worthy asthe top side.

THE ZEPHYRS Heinz Could ClickWhat Is That All About; OrientalDream (Decca F 11647)NEW group lead on a beaty in-

strumental with more than atouch of the Duane Eddy's. Plentyof echo on the repetitive mediumpace number which is very re-miniscent of "Diamonds". Butthere's some very good solo workon this one-it moves along welland should sell well.

The flip is a gentler numberwith some good instrumental workonce again. Again quite well per-formed but maybe with a bit toomuch echo. Enjoyable,

good Schroeder -Hawker num-ber for the top side here. Balladytempo, ultra -sincere in treatmentand full of the promise we've notedon her previous releases. Maybeit lacks immediate impact and somay miss the charts . . . but itcould hover around for many amonth. She has intensity, power,dynamics . . all on her side.Good lyrics. Amiable tune. Similarlushness for the flip. Lynda hasa deepish voice which is ideallytailored for this type of deepishballad. Watch her.

AT Oldhill Plaza, near Birming-ham, last Saturday, the last few

bars of "Do The Bird", drownedby applause and cries for "More",rounded off Miss Dee Dee Sharp'sone and only British "live" con-cert. It really was quite a show,and Dee Dee made the most of theopportunity to put her very con-siderable talents on display. ..

Earlier, the dusky 18 -year -oldfrom Philadelphia, who was inBritain for a lightning promotionalvisit, had nervously awaited thetime of her first -ever appearancebefore a British audience. (Thiswasn't helped any by the latearrival of her backing group, the

Rory Blackwell Combo, who haddashed from Cardiff after doing anevening TV show.)

When she did appear, however,in a cool blue dress and shoes tomatch, her apprehension was wellhidden and swiftly disappeared asshe began her opening number, acute version of the old Darin hit,"Splish Splash". From that momenther infectious good humour andforceful vocalising kept the highlyappreciative audience in raptattention.

After inviting one young man onstage with a twist session, Dee Deetore into her own full-bloodedrocker, "Ride", and really beganto show her worth.

There was a slight let-up in pacefor "A Hundred Pounds of Clay",which also underwent a slightchange in the lyrics. Instead of theword "woman" (if you rememberthe Gene McDaniels version), shesubstituted "Chubby'. It is a well-known fact that Dee Dee digs Mr.Checker the uttermost.

Her hard -driven finale was madeup of two Sharp standards,"Mashed Potato Time", sung bril-liantly, and although she couldobviously have carried on all ni01for the audience. the last numberwas "Do The Bird", which, withencore, stopped the show.

Dee Dec's verdict on her first -everBritish audience: "Just wonderful."

ikewise Jim ReevesROD AND CAROLYNHow Can You Tell; What AboulThose Teardrops (Pye 1551vtTHIS could easily be a first-timeI triumph for Pye's new vocalduo. A memorable tune, with somedetermined and direct vocal har-monic work going on. Not like theMiki and Griff sound-they seemto have more power and ingenuity-though they operate inside thesame field. It kinda insinuates itselfin the mind and must stand a goodchance of chart honours. "WhatAbout Those Teardrops" is har-monica -aided and not quite sostrong, melodically. But the duoshow very good ability. Interesting. . . and restful.

A MINOR hit in the States, thisdisc was composed by Hank

Ballard. Harmonica Fats is a namenew to us, and he's got a bluesygruff voice that handles this rockerwell, and there's a swinging FatsDomino/Lloyd Price type backingon it. R & B fans may rave overthis but the general public won't.Catchy and exciting.

Fast stuff on the slightly wilderflip, which hasn't quite the com-mercial appeal again. Not a hitdisc but one which may create con-siderable interest in Fats,

AL MARTINOI Love You Because; Merry -Go -Round (Capitol CL 15300)THE old "Here In My Heart" star

has shattered the Americancharts with this single and he couldrepeat the come -back here. Hedoesn't belt as much in the tenorrange as before, but it's a charminglittle number well -performed, and,of course, Presley himself hasrecorded it. Fine simplicity of back-ing, which enhances Al's crystal-clear vocalising. Just misses a TopTwenty Tip . . . but it'll be a closething. Slower flip, with Al vyingwith piano early on. Tastefully set-up and a good value -tor -moneyextra to "I Love l'ou Because".

FOUR '41W4CHERRY ROLANDWhat A Guy; Just For Fun(Decca F 11648)DEEP -VOICED men lead in

Cherry. It's several Cherry's,really, with multi -tracking givingher a vocal trio sound. Rides alongwell enough, plenty of fire and spirit.Beat well laid down. It has a full,wholesome sort of over-all sound-and we rate its chances good forthe charts if it gets enough plug-ging. Movie theme number for theflip. Cherry sings straight here andshows exceptional personality. Sheobviously enjoys the business ofsinging. Chirpy little choral noisesbehind her. Good value flip.

Less commercial flip, another gim-micky beat number, but slightlyslower this time. Again a goodbacking and well performed withsome decent grout, singing.

THE double -sided U.S. hit for theDuke of Earl is finally issued

here. The top side is a bluesy balladwith Gene tearing himself to pieceson the tortuous song. Femmechorus with a simple backing andusual routine sort of sound. Not aseller, but an interesting disc witha grow -on -you quality.

The flip is an answer to the MaryWells U.S. hit " You Beat Me Tothe Punch." It's got the same back-ing and a slight alteration to thelyric-the other side of the storyso to speak. Interesting, but with-out the " feel " of the original.

Flip has some appealing backingsounds and probably a more com-mercial sound on it. Lead voice thistime, with the others giving amplevocal support. Medium -paced balledwith a nice feel.

This is good, down-to-earth Bro.beck, and Paul Desmond plays athis usual peak. The only thingthat at times puts me off Mr. Des-mond and prevents him becomingmy idol are the occasional"squeaks" of high notes in hissolos. But these are strongly "dug"by many colleagues. J.W.

ALAN STINTON in BIRMINGHAM

THE 2nd CITY REPLIES.WELL, now, judging by the in-

dignant response to my inquestOD the Second City last week, Bir-mingham certainly does think it hastalent and zest; and all of the otherthings which I suggested wereapparently lacking. In fact, fromthe letters received, it would appearthat Birmingham's problem is asgood as solved.

Whilst I sort things out and meetthe groups who have so kindlywritten to me, I decided this weekto seek the opinion of someone whoknows the entertainment businessinside out, and who has everyreason for declaring that Birming-ham is not musically dead. She isMrs. M. Regan, for fifteen yearsassociated with show business, andnow the owner of three Birminghamballrooms.

EARNEDIn reply to the article, Mrs.

Regan said that she agreed Liver-pool had well earned its currentfame, and that many of its groups,in particular the Beatles, were ex-cellent.

" There are, however," she con-tinued, "a great number of Bir-mingham groups who are just asgood technically, but have not yetdeveloped a sound of their own. Itthey could achieve this, and theywill eventually, then they will byready for the top.

"Much of the blame for Birming-ham's lack of chart success lieswith the record and TV companies,who have shown little or no interest

in the city. The NRM's plan to dosomething about this is an xcellentone, and long overdue."

Amongst the groups who playMrs. Regan's ballrooms regularlyare the Plazents, Gerry Levene andthe Avengers, the Redcaps, the BlueStars, Johnny and the Alpines, theEchoes, Dane Tempest and theAtoms, the Kopy Kats, and theBarons.

GROOMING"Some of these," claims Mrs.

Regan, "and others are worth com-plete musical grooming. Once thiswas done, there would be nu stop-ping them."

Finally, I asked Mrs. Reganwhy it was that she booked so manyvisiting American stars he localtalent was so good.

"There are two reasons," shereplied. "Firstly because I believethat our patrons want to see them,and secondly because, in the main,the Americans are so professionalthat our own artists should haveevery chance to learn from themanything that there is to be learned."

POSSIBLY the first Birminghamgroup to land a recording con-

tract will be Denny Laine and theDiplomats, four young men whohave already appeared on BBC-tv.I have just heard that last weekJoe (Mr. Piano) Henderson agreedto publish two songs written byDenny. We will be meeting theDiplomats soon in the NRM.

QUIET AT THE TOPA NOT too exciting week chartwise we think. No change in the first" four discs-and only two newies in the twenty. One is the Beatles -penned "Do You Want To Know A Secret"-a challenger for the topspot at the speed it's moving. It's closely followed by "Lucky Lips" fromCliff who just misses the twenty on his first week out. Other newies inthe fifty include the Manchester group Freddie And The Dreamers withtheir debut cover version of James Ray's "If You're Gonna Make A FoolOf Somebody". Paul and Paula still rise with their "Young Lovers".

Susan Maughan is just in with her "She's New To You", while theextremely consistent Johnny Tillotson makes a sleeper awake with hisusual format on "Out Of My Mind".

Billy's Big New LPIT'S odd, in a way. Just out is the new Billy Fury long -player

.. and this is the first specially -recorded album by the originalLiverpool lad in just on three years. But it's triggered off an"everything happening" period for the blond bombshell, disc -wise.

There's the new single. "When Will You Say I Love You" wasactually written by Alan Fielding over a year ago-and he took italong to Larry Parnes together with "Last Night Was Made ForLove".

Says Bill: "I liked them both as much as each other. Butwhile one went into the charts, I've just been waiting, hanging on,for the right opportunity to bring out " When Will You Say ILove You".

It looks a "natch" for equalsuccess.

Then, last week, Bill conductedsome further album sessions beforean invited audience of 600 luckyfans at Decca's West Hampsteadstudios. He used the Tornados onthe backing work, handling sevenof his hits, plus eight others rang-ing from ballads to blues.

This material will come out ashis first "live" L.P. later this

But the biggest interest comesfrom the L.P. "Billy", which figures16 tracks and shows Bill in mag-nificent form. Problems? Well, thtmain one was deciding, after hislong break from the "deliberate"album scene, just what numbersshould he included.

TRACKSBut let's now have a closer listen

to the tracks . . .

"We Were Meant For EachOther".-Pleasant ballad, withchunky, pluck -happy strings behindBill. A' bit light on dynamics, may-be, but an emotional performanceenhanced by a dramatic arrange-ment which builds, and builds, andbuilds.

"How Many Nights, How ManyDays".-A Miller -Carroll opusbeat -ballad, with distinctive noisesgoing on behind. It really movesand is the Fury I particularly like.Punches out the lyrics, touch ofthe rasping delivery.

"Willow Weep For Me".-Here'sa great old standard which 90 petcent. of today's popsters couldn'ttackle. Bill, in the low register,vies with solo saxophone andchoral backing-but a well -con-trolled choral bit for once. Throaty,inventive-this is a triumph forBill. Even antagonists should dig.

"Bumble Bee".-Up-tempo, thistrack. Not, I'd say a particularlyhigh-class melody line, but Bill likesto get cracking on a song. Herehe gets ultra -cracking, pushing thepace along with touches of staccatophrasing.

U.S. HIT"She Cried".-Intro-ed by slow

ponderous beat and the sad Furyemerges. How this guy likes beingsad and being involved in lost love,sadness, misery. Girlie choir here,contributing an almost angelicsound behind. Simplicity of thebacking is most effective. A hit inthe States for Jay and TheAmericans.

"Let Me Know".-Bluesy per-formance. Good song all roundhere, taken at the mid -tempo whichusually shows Bill off to best ad-vantage. He demonstrates a won-derful "feel" for this type of in-volved number.

"The Chapel On The Hill".-Slow ballady set-up for this melodiclittle song. Again, simplicity is thekey -note. with some Nashville -sounding piano going on behind,delicately filling in the gaps. In -

teresting phrasing here, with Billsoaring and swooping on somepassages. Knock -out reading.

"Like I've Never Been Gone".-Hardly any notice needed for this.Many say it's the best thing he'sever done on a single. I'm oneof the many.

Flip over, then."A Million Miles From No-

where".-A Norman Petty songstarts the second side. A fair ballad,but Bill doesn't sound as happyhere as on the others. Once ortwice, he has strain trouble. Maybeit's the range of the melody line.

" I'll Show You ". - SlightCountry tinge here. Lyrics whichat first hearing sound hackneyed. . but become highly acceptableafter a couple of plays. Again . . .

that background simplicity, withquietened down choir, which makesfor effectiveness and listeningpleasure.

"Our DayTwenty itemThat Bill canto do withcredit. Song'Nuff said.

Will Come".-A Topunder its own steam.find anything differentit is to his eternalsuits him to a "T".

"All My Hopes".-Jangly introfor this interesting number. But it'sthe sort of showing that needs tobe hidden away on an album ratherthan pushed out, all starkers, asa single.

"One Step From Heaven".-De-licate little up -tempo start for thistrack. He's much happier here,plunging and pounding with A.I.excitement at the song. Rather anintricate set of lyrics. Bill copesadmirably.

VALUE"One Kiss". - Fine swinging

piano behind the opening here.Warm, throbby lower register stufffrom Bill. I can hear three million"birds" screaming approval. ThisSOUNDS more like Bill, if yougot the gist.

"Hard Times".-Blues for Bill.This, for me, shows the measureof the enormous improvement hehas shown over the years. He sortagets right inside the lyrics, sellingthem with tremendous intuition,Strings and choral voices boost thiswonderful all-round sound.

"Broken Hearted".-Up-temporeading. It's a fine old song ant,Bill brings it slap up to date. Heavydrum beat pushes along the pace.A great curtain -closer.

KENNY BALL-a current hit,a touch of acting, but the band

KENNY -I'LL STICK WITH MY BANDTHOUGH an acting chore is coming up this month for Kenny

Ball-he's currently learning his lines for a film, " Live It Up "-there's no danger that he will be abandoning his trumpet andhis band in favour of an astrakhan -collared coat, a gold -toppedcane and a career in acting.

" Sure, I like acting," Kenny told me. " Who doesn't ? We alllike standing in front of a mirror, making faces and saying ' Youhandsome devil ! ' But all the bits of acting I've done so far,and will do for this film, are playing myself, which is not reallyacting. It's easy to say lines written by somebody who knowsyou and who writes the way you normally speak."

All right, well what about play-ing character parts-a murderer, forexample ?

" Oh, that's simple. I've veryoften wanted to kill people ! SoI'd just sail right into the part withmy usual brilliance-and muck thewhole thing up.

" No, believe me, I'm far toofond of playing my trumpet andworking with the band to want tospend my time acting. I'm not eveninterested in building myself up asa solo personality and doing a lotof dates without the band.

" I think my strength is as abandleader. Maybe I can play thetrumpet occasionally with othertypes of band, but I'm at my bestwith the good swinging sound of myown band. All the guys in it havegood personalities and are popularwith audiences. We're a team."

But now that the trad boom isdeclining is it enough-if you wantto stay at the top-just to run agood band and be a good trumpetplayer ? Don't you need to buildyourself up into a Character (withcapital C), as Acker Bilk has done ?

Kenny replied slowly, thought-fully: " Several years ago we werejust going round the clubs. I washappy making a pretty good living,eating fairly well and often. Thenwe had a hit record (Samantha) andit was bought by people who didn'tnormally go to jazz clubs. Some ofthem came to hear us in person.And, of course, they wanted to hearSamantha. They weren't interestedin much else.

RELAXEDWell, we didn't want to turn

ourselves into red -nosed comics andwear funny clothes, but we did wantto entertain this new audience.Naturally, we wanted them to goaway happy.

" It was then that I realised theimportance of announcementsbefore every number. Acker, I saw,is perfect at it. He's a relaxed blokeby nature and he immediately getsthe audience on his side. I'm not sorelaxed but I found that by beingas informal as possible it not onlygot audiences on our side - they

started thinking we were not sucha bad bunch of blokes-it relaxedus, too. It became a mutual thing,and we played better."

Relaxation, though, is not theonly appealing element in music.Kenny's style is far from relaxed:it appeals to those who love theirtrad to be exciting, tense, full ofdrive.

" I'm coming to feel, though,that drive isn't everything. My idealtrumpet style would be a mixtureof Bobby Hackett for lyricism, WildBill Davison for drive, Louis Arm-strong for tone, and Bix Beider-becke for ideas. I used to be muchmore technical in my approach andI also used to play as though everyminute was likely to be my last onearth. Nowadays I try to be moreeasy-going in my approach, to slowdown and think about what I'mdoing.

INFLUENCED" For my singing," added Kenny,

" my chief influence is the highlyrelaxed Jack Teagarden.

" Relaxation," he went on, " isvery important in the music busi-ness. After the success of Samantha,I used to do plenty of worryingabout follow-ups. But after a whileI figured the more I worried theless my chances of success." (Any-way, after Midnight In Moscow,March Of The Siamese Children,The Green Leaves Of Summer, SoDo I and Sukiyaki, Kenny saw thathe didn't have much to worryabout. Only the Pay Off was a dis-appointment. But Kenny is not

entirely satisfied with the sound ofhis latest, Casablanca - " I feelwe can do better.")

The problems of being a leader ofmen were overcome with the bandin the early stages of its success,Kenny is happy to say. " I foundit very hard at first but we goteverything sorted out and we are ahappy band today with no person-ality problems. I guess I've becomea little harder in the process ofbecoming a successful bandleader,though."

As for the sound of the band,Mi. Ball envisages little change, eventhough the pure trade noise maynot be so popular in future. Butclarinettist Dave Jones will shortlybe buying a baritone sax and willfeature it occasionally - when he'slearnt itl

" We may also try doubling onvarious other instruments. I enjoy achallenge, which is one reason whyI positively like appearing on TV."Last Sunday's Palladium Show wasKenny's fifth appearance, a bandrecord. " We make sure we haverehearsed our routines, except forsolos, so often that we can do themautomatically. This enables us torelax and enjoy ourselves, eventhough we are only on for a fewminutes at a time.

" If we enjoy ourselves we areable to communicate some of thatenjoyment to the listeners and theyenjoy themselves."

Which is why top trad bands arenever likely to be short of a fewbob.
