'WHAT'S SO SPECIAL?'TT'S time somebody spoke out againstA Frank Sinatra, so I've decided to doso. What is it that brings about sucha high rating ? What's so special abouthis voice ? My answer: Nothing!

The general public is like a load ofsheep. He was one of the first big-timecrooners to come onto the music scene,and because of this his name has be-come some sort of magic word.Whether he brings out a bad record ornot, people still believe it's marvellous.

There are many singers today whoare much better than he is. But when aSinatra disc is played on "Juke BoxJury", or any other panel programme,everybody seems transfixed. It is as ifthey have been brainwashed and told toreact to the mere mention of his name.

On many of his records he can'treach all the notes. He croaks. Yethe is rated as the world's top singer.He puts no feeling into a song-yet RayCharles, who puts more in than anyother singer, has been grossly underrateduntil now.

the Everly Brothers, is a fabulousrecord . . . dreamy, wistful and utterlyspell -binding. I think it's a disgrace thatRichard Chamberlain should be allowedto spoil this beautiful ballad. And, un-kind though I may be, I hope his discflops. Everly fans will note with horrorthat he has also recorded "Hi-Lili Hi -Lo", a very sweet version of which canbe found on the Everly album "BothSides of an Evening". CLANG ?SURELY Norman Jopling made an

error in his article on the MarceK.He said Jan and Dean's "Heart AndSoul" was a copy of the Marcels' style-but they had hits with this style, like"Jennie Lee", "Clementine", "There's aGirl" and "Baby Talk" before the Mar-cels were even thought of. But evenJan and Dean didnt start it. A groupcalled the Diamonds first introduced thissound with "Little Darling", whichtopped the U.S. charts back in 1957.So the Marcels can hardly be called theoriginators of this sound.-N. three you have a very interestingstory in regard to BUDDY HOLLY.However, you should understand thatyour article is just a bit mixed up con-cerning "LOVE'S MADE A FOOL OFYOU". In your article, you state thatthe selection was a demo. This is true toa certain extent. You see . . . mostthings that BUDDY did were done goodenough for masters . . . at least all thenumbers we recorded in our NewMexico studio. The release in due timeof the recording by BUDDY will showyou this point. BUDDY did make thistape good enough for a master . . . eventhough it was intended as a demonstra-tion tape of the song. He asked theEVERLY BROTHERS to record thesong and took the tape to Nashville forthem to hear. BUDDY did two parts onthe track so the boys could get the ideaof how they might sound. They did notrecord the number . . . and all fans ofBUDDY HOLLY are in for a treatwhen they hear the recording made as ademo for the EVERLY BROTHERS!As a matter of fact . . . two selectionswere recorded and presented as above.One selection was "LOVE'S MADE AFOOL OF YOU" and the other . . ."WISHING". Both selections will be re-leased in due time in accordance withthe wishes of the folks at DECCA.

FALLEN IDOLS No. 14 FRANKIE LYMONYOU'RE thirteen. You make a record,

with a group called The Teenagers.It's called "Why Do Fools Fall In Love".Some people complain that a lad of yourage should sing such lyrics.

BUT . . . It sells a million, plus.AND .. . You appear at the London

Palladium for a two week's season, theyoungest by quite a few months ever todo so.

THEN . . . Some few years later,people are wondering what on earth everhappened to you! That's the pop busi-ness.

Frankie said, in those early days: "Idon't have to think back far to find outwhen I wanted to sing. But I remembergiving out with the gospel stuff on astreet corner with four other teenagerswhen a guy called Richard Barrett, wholed a group called the Valentines, firstheard me.

"He took us along to Gee Records,which was really a division of Roulette.Our first disc was 'Why Do Fools FallIn Love'. It did over a million salesbefore we had time to even think whatwas happening...."

Frankie, though, still had to cope withthe three Rs at Quintano's ProfessionalSchool in New York City. He was hailed,in the business, as a "natural", vocallyspeaking. He'd never had a singinglesson in his life and he kept it that way,though all the time he made hit discs.

By 1957-that's SIX years ago-Roulette Records were after youngFrankie as a single, so he changed overfrom his previous Gee guvnor'ship.

Said Frankie, around that time: "Somefolk say I must be awful conceited be-cause of the way I work on stage. Well,I don't mean to give that impression.The fact is that I kinda lose myself onceI get out there with a lotta rhythmgoing for me."

Yes, Frankie-despite the huge boostto fame he enjoyed-did keep a senseof perspective.

But what's happened since? True, hestill works, but only fitfully. He's beenlost in the upsurge of other youngartists, many of whom don't have any-thing like the same sense of improvisa-tion and zest -for -life that young Frankiestill produces. He's become a casualty ofone of the toughest, most relentless,businesses in the world.

FRANKIE LYMON : A top teen talent.

He WAS an idol. He avoided the tagof "precocity" and the general criticismslevelled against the teen star. He sangwith all the innate artistry of his race,be it with a soprano -type voice and ona lot of material which was hardly hiscuppa.

What's the betting that he'll be back-and come back real good? He'll find ithard going.

But anyone who could sing so well atthe tender age of 13 must be worth asecond chance.

"Why Do Record Idols Go For ABurton"-that's an idea for a song.

Let's hope Frankie finds the answer.And remedies it.

T SPENT a great deal of time withFrankie Lymon and the Teenagers

during their stay in Britain in the springof 1957.

Every time I watched them on stageI was more and more impressed by theirslick presentation . . . and in particularthe dynamic talent shown by the youngFrankie Lymon.

Later that year I had confirmationfrom America that the lad's voice was

breaking. This was unfortunate as itoccurred right at the start of his solocareer. Another fact which has aided his"disappearance" from the pop scene isthat during his voice transition period thepop record scene really exploded into thefantastic size it now is.

Yes. Frankie was lost in a wilderness. . . but as colleague Peter Jones saysabove: "What's the betting that he'll beback?"

In closing I'd just like to name a fewof the team's other big hits during 1956-57 - "I'm Not A Know It All", "TheA.B.C.s Of Love", "I'm Not A JuvenileDelinquent" and "Baby, Baby", thelatter being a coupling from the film"Rock, Rock, Rock" in Ploich theyappeared with a host of other toppop stars.

Pictures And Story Froth ateq.THE latest in the steady flow of Elvis Presley films comes from the MGM stable

in Hollywood and promises to be as action -packed and entertaining as his bestprevious screen ventures.

The title is "It Happened At The World's Fair" and, all being well, London willbe getting a simultaneous premiere with America. At present the scheduled openingis set for Easter on both sides of the Atlantic.

Co-starring with Elvis in the movie are Joan O'Brien, Gary Lockwood, YvonneCraig, Sandra Giles and the cutest little lass from the Orient, who is all of sevenyears old, Vicky Tiu.

Naturally Elvis does a bit of singing during the plot and single and LP releasesare planned prior to the film's screening.

NOW FOR THE STORY:EL and Gary Lockwood, playing the

parts of Mike Edwards and DannyBurke, are pilots by profession and, aswell as soaring high into the open sky,they also, with regularity, find them-selves diving financially into the condi-

don we all know as "being flat broke".Mike is the half of the team with a

weakness for beautiful lasses of all types.Danny's frailty can be blamed almostsolely on one lady . . . Dame Fortune!You see he is what we call a compulsivegambler.

Early in the film a spot of botherleaves them without plane, or the meansof getting it back. So off they go to the"World's Fair" in Seattle, hitch -hiking,in search of money -earning work.

THUMBSTheir pleading thumbs attract the eyes

of a Chinese farmer, Ling (Kam Tong)and his niece Sue -Lin (Vicky Tiu) whoare also en route rto the fair.

But there is a broken heart in storefor Sue -Lin as, on their arrival, heruncle gets involved in some unexpectedbusiness affairs which means she cannot,after all, go to the fair.

Mike suggests that he act as her escortwhile Danny goes off in search of an oldbuddy in an effort to raise some cash.

Again trouble comes along for Sue -Lin. After she and Mike have taken inall the fun of the fair her stomachobjects to all the goodies she has beeneating. Mike takes her to the first aiddispensary and at the side of Nurse DianeWarren (Joan O'Brien) he flips andimmediately feigns sick so that he toocan be "cured". But his charm doesn'twork this time.

Later he gets better news from Dannywhose gambling has won him an estatecar and caravan. Now they have a roofover their heads at least.

The troubles keep piling up, beingsorted out, and piling up again .. . andall the while Mike is faliing deeper anddeeper in love with his nurse.

She. however, plays it a little cool, tosay the least.

Danny's friend turns out to be a mostshady character who tries to get the boysinvolved in a smuggling deal in orderthat they can get the money to redeemtheir plane.

The action is really swinging alongnow with all being deeply involved.

In the end true love etc. conquers all.

I'm sure he'd gojust great in the States, and I've beenspending a lot of my time telling pro-moters and agents here about him.He's :pother guy with a marvellous senseof humour, with a very off -beat line inwhat we'd call Cockney comedy. Acharacter like Joe would sure liven upthe American scene."

Originally it was hoped JimmieRodgers would join the Shannon -Tillotson tour, producing his "EnglishCountry Garden" hit and others. Butnow he's OUT . . . and the Springfieldsare IN.

Del has also followed the Springfields'career with a lot of interest. They had

AMBASSADOR) RICHARDNo hard-and-fast news. No critical assessment of this discor that. Or this film or that. Just a tribute to the Britishpop world's biggest draw and Number One Nice Guy. Atribute he has earned . . .

CLIFF returned last week from South Africa, where he caused more mob -gathering,more riot -raising, more honest -to -goodness noises of appreciation than most

political revolutions. He took the place by storm. He could have stayed for alife -time.

And, what's more, he did more good for British pop music than anyone canimagine. He waved a flag. He took over a whole country.

There was a time when everyoneworried about whether Cliff could com-mand the same popularity out of thiscountry. No one now has any doubts.Australia, New Zealand, South Africa,America, even. Back to South Africa. Cliff, return-ing on St. Valentine's Day, had memoriesof what was called "the world's biggestpop concert" in Nairobi. That was inaid of Kenya's under -privileged children.That was a promise he made to TomMboya, who had specially asked tomeet Cliff.

He's also a keen golfer. This isn't atop sport among pop stars, but Del hasideas about forming an American teamof popsters to play matches for charity.

Perhaps the biggest thing about Delis the way other stars speak so highlyof him. There's no jibbing at his recentconsistent success. Maybe the reasonis that they know him to be a thoroughlyprofessional all-round performer.

The sort of guy who will certainlystay at the top now that he has madesuch an impact.

ELLA RETURNSRING CROSBY said it -and it became" one of the most -quoted remarks ofmodern show business. Speaking of acertain Miss Fitzgerald, he said: "Man,woman or child, Ella is the greatest".

And Ella is back in Britain this week.Back for concert appearances and astarring appearance in next weekend's"Sunday Night At the London Palla-dium".

Now known throughout the worldsimply as "Ella", the star has walkedaway with every honour the music in-dustry can' bestow. It's become a fore-gone conclusion that she wins mostmusical polls in her section. And, some-how, she has become acceptable to boththe pop followers and the jazz fans.

Let's go into retrospect for a moment.Ella first attained prominence on discwith her own composition "A-Tisket, A-Tasket"-she was then with the ChickWebb band. Since then, nobody (exceptpossibly Sinatra) has come to commandso much respect.

She is certainly the Queen of L.P.land.

She has recorded for posterity someof the loveliest pop songs of the day,written by the great composers of thetimes. Among the outstanding teamingshave been the works of Cole Porter,Rodgers and Hart, Duke Ellington andthat magnificent five-volume Gershwinset.

Not forgetting the more commercialmarket either, Ella has had some bighits with "But Not For Me", "Mr.Paganini", "Hard-hearted Hannah","Pete Kelly's Blues", "Swinging Shep-herd Blues", "Mack The Knife" and herrecent "Desafinado (Slightly Out OfTune)".

MemorableWho can forget those memorable and

hectic "Jazz At The Phil" concerts. Herhighspot has always been the frenetic"How High The Moon", with its many"scat" choruses. At the Hollywood Bowl,she always plays to capacity.

But one of the most exciting projectsis soon to be consummated, Ella andFrank Sinatra are finally going to mergetheir talents on disc. There will be twoduet albums -one for Frank's ownrecord company Reprise. The other is forthe Norman Granz label, Verve, towhich she is contracted.

Here, her concerts are already nearsold -out. She is accompanied by a quar-tet comprising Tommy Flanagan (piano),Les Spann (guitar -flute), Jimmy Hughart(bass), Gus Johnson (drums). Sharingthe bill: the Oscar Peterson Trio.

It's not a long stay. But let's say now:"Welcome, Ella. It's nice to have youover again".

groups. The Shadows, the Beatles,the Tornados - a touch of the song -and -play and chart chances are good.Which is why that famous jaywalkingoutfit of Peter Jay are convinced thelights are currently set permanently atgreen for them. Green for go, go, GO.

They'd done well on tour with the beatshows. But it was the disc of "CanCan '62" which really did it for them.That put them in the fans' collectiveeye as one of the top beat aggrega-tions.

"Can Can" was the first disc on theDecca label. Now comes "TotemPole", a catchy item from the pen ofJoe Meek. Needn't say much moreabout the number-"Telstar" is stillearning Joseph a bomb all over theworld. Flip is an original by Peter

Currently out with the "Your LuckyStars" package, the Jaywalkers wereformed two years ago. And while itswings now for them, Peter admittedthis week: "It's been an uphillstruggle. There have been many timeswhen we've felt like throwing in thetowel.

"Some people seem to think that showbusiness is all glamour and glitter. Butit's not like that at all. It is hardwork, both physically and mentally.Mentally? Well, you can't get on inthis business without doing a lot ofworrying. There's so much to thinkabout.

HELEN SHAPIRO is to tackle her first summer season this year-ten weeks withdee-jay Jimmy Savile and the Vernons Girls at the Royal Aquarium, Great

Yarmouth from June 28. But it was a near thing. . . .

This week, Helen admitted: "At first, my mother didn't really want me to appearin a resident show, but my co -manager, Arthur Howes, who is putting on the pro-duction, eventually persuaded her.

"Now the problem is what I should do in the show. I want to include somenumbers that will appeal to older folk as well as the teenagers. You do get a lot ofadults coming along to these shows, not because they arc fans but because they areinquisitive as to what really goes on at a pop show!"

Already, Helen is using banjo in herstage act and is singing some of the earlySophie Tucker numbers as well as otheroldies. She is getting, in a sense, thatmusic -hall atmosphere into her perform-ance, so she's setting herself up well forthose inquisitiye holidaymakers.

We talked on, the sun-tanned Helenand I. "Got the tan during my four -week tour of army camps in Israel," shesaid. "It was absolutely fab. EverywhereI went, the reception was terrific, but 1must confess that I was absolutely petri-fied on the first night. The weather there

. . well it was too hot to go out ofdoors.

"At least, the British weather is moder-ate. Even if you do get all four seasonsin one day. . . ."

TRANSISTORThe chat ended for a moment. Her

latest single, already climbing the charts,was blurting out over her transistor radio.Helen listened intently to "Queen ForTonight". Then she said : "I always listento my discs whenever I hear them beingplayed. I learn by them, you know. I tryto solve any mistakes I think I mighthave made. Then I try to remedy thephrasing or technique on my next disc.

"Funny about my radio. I just won'tgo anywhere without it. I remembertravelling up to Darlington by train andbecoming engrossed in a pop show. Ididn't even realise that the train wasAT the station.

"Only a sharp toot on the guard'swhistle brought me to my senses-andI got out of the train in the nick oftime. That's how much I'm taken in bymusic."

TRAVELLINGHelen just never seems to stop work-

ing. Apart from her one-nighters, she isputting in a lot more travelling. OnMarch 8, she flies to Holland for radioand TV engagements. Then, on March11, she stars with Edith Piaf in a FrenchTV show. The next day, she broadcastsfrom Olympia, Paris, in a major Euro-pean radio show. Back, then, for moreone-nighters.

There's a goodly chance that she willmake a three-week tour of South Africaduring the Spring, possibly starting on

April 1. Then, on May 3, she begins aseries of shows with Frank Pourcel,Edith Piaf and Italian and German popheadliners, playing dates in Munich,Vienna, Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg and,on May 10, one of her own shows willbe televised over the Eurovision link fromZurich. She has also been asked to playmore dates in Sweden and Denmark atthe end of May and the first fortnightin June.

Then comes that summer season, thecontroversial one. Said Helen : "I reallywanted to do a season last summer butmother didn't think it right. I took thealternative of doing a week at differentseaside resorts."

Incidentally, Peter Jay and the Jay-walkers are also on the bill. This meansPeter is playing in direct opposition tohis father, Jack Jay, who is owner -manager of Yarmouth's WindmillTheatre, where Larry Parnes is onceagain presenting pop headliners.

All this, you might think, is enoughfor any 16 -year -old girl. But, of course,Helen is now in Nashville, Tennessee.working on several numbers speciallycommissioned for her. The Jordanaires,Presley's backing group, are confirmedfor the Shapiro support-and six songs,two American and four British. havebeen selected for the three-day session.

"Still, we're glad we kept going. We'vealways had a lot of faith in ourselvesand we're now satisfied with the waythings have turned out. That first discwas a turning point for us and we'rehoping for even more from 'TotemPole' ".

Last year, the boys appeared withTommy Steele at the Windmill Theatreand with Bill Fury at the BritanniaPier. "That was our first taste of a big-time summer show", said Peter, whosefather manages and owns the WindmillTheatre.

Starting June 28, the Jaywalkers appearnightly at the Royal Aquarium, Yar-mouth, with Helen Shapiro. SaidPeter: "She's a great artist. The boysand I are all admirers of her singing."

How did that name, Jaywalkers,originate? Said Peter: "Well, there'smy own name. But we also do somerather different dance steps on stage.

RAGEWe called them the 'Jaywalk' and,early on, we found everybody in thedance hall at Norwich followed us. Soit all started as an East Anglian rage."

NOBODY - but NOBODY - getsso much knocking and carping over

his records as Jess Conrad. Mention hisname IN the business and you get afunny sort of smile and a rapid sort ofshoulder -shrug. And "Juke Box Jury"panels seem to delight in pinning himto the wall and puncturing him withbarbs of malice.

First point to clear up is "WHY?".Why go to so much trouble to run Jess'svoice down when so many other singersare as bad, vocally, if not worse?

I talked to honest Jess. Asked himabout the pillory bit. Checked if he feltangry about it.

Over, then, to Jess. He said:"Once upon a time, it was fashion-

able to knock me. They said: 'JessConrad can't sing. He's a bit of ascream. He looks all right, of course.Probably a good actor. But let's sendhis voice up.'

FEELINGS

"Well, please don't think they hurt myfeelings I can take it. In fact, if someonelike my male Pete Murray has a go atme-the signs are that HE is the onewho loses fans. People write to me andsay, angrily, why should he say all thosethings about you.

"The trouble is that, basically, I'm anactor. Jack Good got me on the singingkick. He felt l had appeal. But I wasalways the actor. Now it astounds thecritics that I'm still on the scene as asinger They can't understand it. So theyhave their digs. . .

"I've got a completely untrained voice.No better and no worse than a lot of thesingers who get into the Top Twenty.Everyone thought I'd come . . . and go.But I'm still here. Yes, it astoundsthem.'

Jess paused for a moment.

"Look I'm a very lucky guy. I have toask myself what difference a hit recordwould make for me. Say my first one forColumbia, 'Take Your Time', made itbig. What's the difference? I split eachyear between concerts, films and televi-sion already.

"Yes. I'm lucky. I'd love a hit record.But I'm not out of work if I don't getone."

Jess did, in fact, have a hit early onwith "Mystery Girt', following on with"Cherry Pie". "The Pullover", "GonnaLove My Life Away", "Pretty Jenny"amonn others.

Said Jess:"The trouble with this country is that

people don't like you to be an actor ANDa singer. You should be one or theother. If, for instance, I was in Americain the early days, I'd have expected tobe groomed for big things. LikeFABIAN, or ROCK HUDSON, orJIMMY DARREN. If the grooming fails,then you've had it.

'But here people won't generally takea chance. The success in films and on discof CLIFF is the exception that showshow badly the rest are pushed towardsstardom. They're frightened to take achance . . to let a performer do some-thing different

"Anyway, that's it. Maybe I'm not asinger But I'm delighted to be with theEMI group. NORMAN NEWELL hasbeen very helpful-and I think the back-ing on 'Take Your Time', by JOHNNYKEATING, is the best I've ever had.

"I'm not saying about the vocal.know my own limitations. It's silly toshoot off your mouth. . . ."

Let's look at what's happening forJess. Friday last week, he opened atSouthend in his first concert appearance

for a year (filming has been his busypoint). On Sunday, he did an excep-tionally good job with Carroll Bakerand Sam Wanamaker in the ITV dramapresentation, "Paradise Suite".

On March 30, he appears in "TheFlip Side Man", an instalment of a newseries about a psychiatrist. He plays amentally -odd rock singer. They'vefilmed seven in this series but the onefeaturing Jess is rated the tops - andhas been moved up to kick off the run.

Said Jess:"Decca will be bringing out an EP of

four numbers from this. One, 'It's AboutTime', appears as per the play on theEP but they're re-recording me on itfor release as a single. Decca can do thisbecause I was still under contract to themat the time.

APPRECIATE

"Yes, it would be odd if that were ahit while I'm with another company now.But I'd be pleased. Decca gave me thatstart and I appreciate all they've done."

Then there's his film, "Aliki", whichhe made in Greece

"Jt's been sold to Greece, of course,"he said. "And to America. We're nottoo sure yet about Britain but I've anidea it'll be around about Easter -time.I've got some good songs in that movie.

"And 'The Boys' is doing great gunsin South Africa, now. I get a lot of fan -mail from there. And there's a goodchance that I'll be going to South Africaafter the one -nigh ter tour for a big colourmovie 'Zulu', playing an English boy.

"It's a small part . . and that'scaused the hold-up. But I always saythere s no such thing as a small part-only a small actor. There's another filmpossibility, too, in 'Girl On The Roof'.I'd play a schoolteacher, resented by his

colleagues, who nevertheless really under-stands the kids."

St. Valentine's Day which was lastThursday, is THE lucky day of the yearfor Jess. He's found it so throughout hiscareer - which started as a film extra,totin' an umbrella in "Joe Macbeth"for fifty bob a day.

On St. Valentine's Day, 1959, he wason telly in "Rock -A -Bye -Barney", play-ing a rock 'n' roll singer. That was whenhe really started causing a furore.

On St. Valentine's Day, 1960,"Mystery Girl" moved into the charts.

St. Valentine's Day, 1963? Said Jess:"I had hoped 'Take Your Time' might

be showing.night, preparing for that first -for -a -yeartheatre date. And I finalised the purchaseof a fI2,000 house in Denham village-aTudor -style house rather like a farm-house. So it's still my lucky day. . ."

He'll have plenty of room in Denhamfor his Great Dane "Happy" and hiscat "Ming".

Jess Conrad may not be the bestsinger in the business. But at least he cantake the verbal punishment handed outto him.

And I've a feeling he's got some sur-prises still in store for the disc -punditswho don't dig his style ....

It hasn't. But I had an early

ANKA-who made the big tie-up in Paris last weekend when he enteredinto a marriage contract with lovely model Anne de Zogheb-this week made

another tic -up in London.Spanka Music, the firm that publishes Paul's many successful compositions (in-

cluding "The Longest Day" and his current hits "Eso Beso" and "Love Makes theWorld Go Round"), will have its catalogue released in Britain via the KeithProwse-Peter Maurice organisation, from March 1.

Paul's activities are certainly world-wide. In addition to getting married inParis and making a London publishing deal, this month has also seen him recordingan album in Rome.

In addition to visiting other parts of Europe this Spring, Paul's itinerary for theyear includes trips to Japan, Manila and South America.

The wild singer retired from thebusiness several years ago for religiousreasons, and his only recordings recentlyhave been gospel -type.

But now Little Richard has signed anew pop records contract with Atlantic(released here on London), and the firstraving numbers will shortly be recorded.

His recent and successful tour ofBritain has helped attract even moreattention to this dynamic performer.

Vocalion Back !AN old label returns to the record

scene this week with the release ofthe hit American recording of "CastYour Fate to the Wind" by pianist VinceGuaraldi.

It is Vocalion, a label that issuedsome choice jazz recordings (by DukeEllington and other greats) in the 1930s,but which has been dormant for manyyears. Now it is being used as a sub-sidiary of Vogue Records.

THE SECRET OF A HIT?WHAT makes a rock 'n roll hit ?

A silly question, of course, and Johnny Cymbal has come up with hisown comical explanation, "Mr. Bass Man", released by London on Friday.

It's Johnny's contention that the bass singer, not the lead, is "the hiddenking of rock 'n' roll." In this novelty recording, Johnny is taught how toget that low-down sound that gets the sales. The number was written byJohnny Cymbal.

He was born in Ochiltree, Scotland, in February, 1945. The familyemigrated to Canada in 1952 and then moved to USA in 1960. He beganmaking records a couple of years ago, but had to stop because it wasinterfering with his schooling. Now he's through with schooling and "Mx.Bass Man" is his first professional attempt to reach the charts.

rate both numbers equally. Probablybe a double -sided hit . . . but hitit most certainly will be. "Foot -Tapper" was written by Hank andBruce for the "Summer Holiday"movie. It's a beautifully balanced bitof recording with a compelling theme.Hank, Licorice and Bruce are in pre-cise, driving form - but the sideshowcases Brian's forceful but con-trolled drumming, notably on cym-bats. Just try and stop your foot tap-ping. It'll fair hurtle into the charts- and is probably even better than"Dance On". Flip is, of course, well-known to the fans. Good strong bassguitar on the initial theme, touchof the flute, incisive beat laid downwell. We'll go for "Foot Tapper",but only after a lot of round -tableargument. "Breezy" strings . . .

There's more action,vocally speaking, from the backingchorus and the odd wild whoop fromsomebody backstage. But his fans willflock all right . .. His voice is gentle andcalm for the flip, too-but again welonged for him to start having a go atthe song. He's just cool, calm . . .

golden trumpet guy comes in on asimple melody-written by Eric Win -stone?- and starts swooping and diving,instrumentally. There's no similarity .but this could have the same sort ofappeal as Steve Race's "Nicola". Mainlystrings behind the trumpet, which iscrisply played and sweetly tonal. It'llbe a steady seller but it's not differentenough for the big-time. More L.A.,with a growling trumpet intro on"Uhuru". More perfectionist trumpet-ing from Eddie. That's beyond dispute.But just how big is the market for thistype of single these days. Most peopleget this music on albums.

Sax states the first stages of thetheme, then it jogs neatly along. Notwildly likely in the sense of big salesbut most folk who hear it will like it.

of Greece and was brought hereby Norman Newell to stab at fame inLondon. He has a warm voice, a goodsong, a nifty arrangement for his debuton The Secret. He sings out surprisinglyunaccented and sounds not unlike a lessbig -voiced Malcolm Vaughan. It's high-pitched and Gino gets bang on the noteall the way. The strings behind him helpa lot in the atmosphere -building. "BigWide World" is a useful ballad, with alot of sincerity about the general Ginoperformance. Similarly paced to the topside. A musicianly sort of professionaljob all round.

orchestra on a Blackwell song.Court -room application to a love -lyric.Gene whips up his usual excitement andit could easily be the one to get him backin the charts. Lively all round and he fairpounds out his message. Sometimes exoticbacking. It drives, drives, drives. Hisfinal sentence to the girl is "Life . .with me". Certainly his best in a longwhile. Listen in hard. Flip is not reallyso strong but Gene gives a strong, rathercomplex, performance. An all-out driveon the top side and he could make it,though he just misses a Twenty Tip.

Ian, light -voiced but determined,sings a brisk, mid -tempo number whichhas more charm than dramatic quality.Incisive choral bits help keep the pacegoing along. He sounds very Cockneyin delivery . . . not unlike Adam Faithfrom the pronunciation point of view.Anyway, it's entertaining. Same tempofor the flip. Rather well arranged andIan sings the more difficult number withconsiderable skill. Not so strong on theCockney content on this side.

WELL, there can't be much wrong withattacks the old

"Round and Round" bit with all her in-genuity and verve. More commercially -slanted than jazz -styled, but no worse forthat. Ella's inventivness is quite stagger-ing in parts and it simply must get a lotof air -time. Be marvellous if it actuallylifted her into the charts, wouldn't it?Excellent back -of -Ella piano. "SigningOff" is a slow, suited -to -album ballad.Ella gives even the poorer lyrics somesort of meaning. You don't fault Ella.You just go along with everything shedoes. Rather a poignant lyric all through.Beautifully displayed.

tackles with all the necessary throb-bing emotion these two sides from hermovie, made here with Dirk Bogarde."1 Could Go On Singing", which shecan do for ever, non-stop, as far aswe're concerned, is a vaudeville -typesong which she handles like no other galin the world. Lotsa memories from thisof 23 years of active show business fromthe magnificent Judy. Keep singin', gal.Rather quieter on the flip, Judy againdoes her emotion -extracting bit. Whatwarmth. What artistry. Don't botherto look for either side in the charts.But hear them, anyway.

WELL, welcome back, Johnnie. There'salways room for one of the great

showmen -stylists of all time. "Lookout",his first for Brunswick here, is punchedout with veritable good humour by thesongster and it's a very commercialoffering. Electric organ goes on likemad behind his determined vocal. Thatdistinctive vibrato is there in plenty andthe result all round is fine. We'd loveto see him back in the charts. Flip ismore like the old Johnnie-and we knewhe'd get "tears" in somewhere. Hehandles this better -than -a% erge balladwith all his old emotion.

do the trick for multi -talentedJim. "Pin A Medal . . ." tells of theletter from a mate apologising for agirl -theft. Recognition of Darren isslow but sure in this country and hehas such a lively show on this thatwe're taking an outsider to moveinto the top. It's repetitive, but com-mercially so. Fine blend of voice,choir, orchestra. Buy it-and proveus right. Flip seems almost out ofcharacter for Jim - unless you'veheard his last L.P. Slow, balladly,breathy sort of vocal. But in directcontrast to the furious top side. Ver-satility, see?

JACKIE LYNTONI Believe; The Girl in the Wood(Piccadilly 35107)BIG -RANGED JACKIE is one of the

most unusual talents in the business.He believes in trying something different.Now "I Believe" has been regardedas a big -voice ballad. He takesit at tear -along tempo and reallydoes do something new with therather smaltzy lyrics. You feel more andmore breathless as he roars along. Weliked tt a lot and hope you agree. Jackiedeserves a really big -seller. "Girl InThe Wood" comes in for some prettystartling treatment, too. Despite hisapparent gimmicks, Jackie is a solidlymusicianly performer, hitting his notessometimes that interesting fraction offthe button. Try both sides - that's ourrecommendation.

MORE enthusiasm these days for theDovells and "You Can't Run

Away" is a well -performed vocal groupjob but probably without too much chartprospect. The lead voice seems to losecontrol in parts but there's some in-volved arranging of the general voices.Organ takes the mid -way bit. Might dowell-but it's more likely to get lost inthe rush. "Save Me, Baby" really hasmore to commend it. It's brisk, lively,enthusiastic. Hand clapping pushes italong. Lead voice, this time, seemswierdly balanced. But it's an excitementpiece, with a throaty deep voice "yeah-ing" away madly.

"CORRIDA", alias "Bullfight", comes' from the album "Viva Chaquito",

which is one of the best helpings everof British Latin -America. It's forceful,exciting, cleverly arranged and dynamic-ally presented. This taster should makeall fans want to leap out and get thatL.P. Punchy piano mid-way-and it's allthoroughly authentic, "Francesca" ismuch slower but none the less enjoyable.The precision of the section work issomething at which to marvel-if youget time to marvel when your feet aretapping so furiously. Again, excellentpiano. Well worth a spin ... or two .. .

third solo for Oriole. She's theblonde lass with the Raindrops vocalgroup. The song is already in the Ameri-can charts and Jackie is dressed up ina multi -track treatment which accen-tuates rather than diminishes her crispvocal charms. Flickering string backingby Frank Barber. It's a most satisfyingsingle which may give Oriole anothersales boost. Lyrically, very strong."Goodbye" may be a lonely word, butthis is a lively performance. Rather alot happening in the background, per-haps, but Jackie sings out with her usualdominance. She's got personality in hervoice.

"How To Succeed In Business ... "She swings like crazy, with BennyCarter's band on the backing. Crisp,honey -sweet in tone, dynamic inapproach-oh yes, this is a great per-formance judged from any direction.Essentially a show song, but even sostanding up well as a single because ofinnate artistry of everybody on the side.Great, Peggy. Just great. And she'sno less sensational on the "Best Is YetTo Come" side. This is pretty well upto her best, anyway. She purrs. Liter-ally purrs through an attractively jerkyCarter arrangement. Just misses one ofthose rare five -bell ratings.

AND we didn't even know the Out-laws, who used to back Mike Berry,

had been away Here they are on aJoe Meek composition (he uses his ownname on the labels these days)-and thedisc contains all the usual Meekian in-gredients of sound. A neatly catchytune which carries well in the mind.Dominant guitar, of course, and a lotof busy percussion going on at back.Could easily catch on and do a touch ofthe Tornados. Bass sounds for thestart of the Geoff Goddard number onthe flip. It rides along with all therhythm of a high-steppin' horse in theDeep South.

"I'm Qualified". Then Jimmy makeshis entry with typical coloured performerdrive and powerhouse action. He is quali-fied, we hasten to add, to look after hisbaby. A thoughtful gentleman. Hesounds like many another singer butthere's an off -beat quality about his voicein the lower reaches. And he's helped bychanges in tempo throughout. Flip isfaster by several yards. His loving time isany time. He doesn't necessarily needmoonlight and music. Rather delightful,this number.

sometimes they catch, sometimes theydie a horrible death. Faron's reputationshould help him to some sales but it hasa rather specialist appeal. The idea be-hind the flip is fair enough, but it'shardly wildly infectious, suffering froma limited range. However, it does keepgoing. Relentlessly so.

WOUTis one of the most versatile

guitarists in the business and hasbeen winning teen acclaim through radioshows. "Long Road South" is a prettytheme, played with consummate artistry.Even those who are getting bored withthe guitar output must go for this one-incidentally, Wout wrote it for himself.There's some expressive flute mid -way,which lends it an exotic sort of quality.Mr. Steenhuis is, for sure, on the wayup. Andy Stewart has bad the vocalpickings on "Scottish Soldier" but Woutmanages to find a different way, and adifferent tempo, to get the song across.Bell -like sounds to Wout's guitar pluck-ing. And some unusual harmonies withflute again towards the end. Involved

but not too much so. He's a crafts-man, all right.

His phrases are echoed bythe Basic economy on the keyboard.Gives us a chance to compareFrankie with our own Matt. Later,the orchestra punch away behindhim-and it's an unmistakableorchestral sound. After ponderingawhile, we think it is a good -bet tipfor the top. Also from the L.P. is"Please Be Kind", which is not oneiota, one jot, one tittle worse thanthe advertised top side. A fine blendof voice and orchestra.

THIS probably stands more than anoutside chance of making the chants.

The Duprees are a disciplined sort ofvocal group, who work over a song(in this case a couple of good ones)with taste and restraint. Lead voiceis not too dominant and the otherDuprees fill in with a neat sense ofrhythm and style. "I'd Rather . . . "is easily the strong side, commercially,and needs only sufficient plugs to makethe grade. Watch it closely. "I Wish. . . " is a fair bit faster and falls intothe rut ploughed by so many vocalgroups before The Duprees. Lead voicehere strains like billy -ho at the top ofhis range. Not so effective because it'smore contrived.

STRAIGHTin the footsteps of the

Beatles, this Liverpool group have afirst-time stab at fame. Gerry, leadvoice, zips into a rather catchy littlemelody. The beat is not so solidly laiddown, but there's plenty happening,including some forceful piano. Gerry'svoice is high-pitched and biting. It's riskyto tip this for the top but there's nodoubt at all that it will sell very wellindeed. He strains a wee bit for effecton the flip but there's some unusualsounding harmonic work going on. Atleast this group has ideas. They deservesuccess.

BUSTER, well-known in Aussie -land, isactually the father of Patsy Ann

Noble, currently making the grade inBritain. It's a comedy offering, whichhas beaten even Frank !field in the"Down Under" charts, with some veryfunny lines. Buster does it, Englishstyle, in a talking sort of way. Effec-tively produced and backed. Must getsome plays from the dee-jays here. Chartpotential dubious. "Nellie" is the publi-can's daughter. She's not much of a"catch" . . . but her daddy buys all herboy -friends' beer. "Free beer" is quitea bait for the Aussies. Again, it hassome very funny moments, in a sing -along style. Deserves credit for tryingto get out of the rut .. .

ELVIS -A NATURALELVIS PRESLEYOne Broken Heart For Sale; TheyRemind Me Too Much Of You(RCA Victor RCA 1337)IT really only needs two words: "A

HIT". This is Elvis on a coupleof numbers from "It Happened AtWorld's Fair". Fastish beat -ballad,with the Mello Men working awaymadly behind him. Persistently laid -down beat which is well up to therecent Presley releases. He seems inabundant good spirits throughout"One Broken Heart For Sale". Mustbe a fast -rising knock -out huge hit.We can't get the sound out of ournuts. Slow, near -concerto type pianofor the first few bars of the flip.Then Elvis moves in, slowly andearnestly, on a real emotional ballad.He works it over with the inmostsincerity-and there are thousandswho prefer him on this sort of quiet-ness. It'll get as many plays, prob-ably, as the top side.

lazy and relaxed and apparentlymaking no effort but nevertheless turn-ing in a great pop performance. "FromThe Bottom Of My Heart" is a ratherinocuous sort of number, dressed upwith tinkly strings and piano -accordion,but Dean sounds as if he believes everyword of it. Professional, of course.Flip really swings. It's the title song ofDean's latest movie and the lyrics areexcellent. A bookie theme in the loveworld is the idea of the song. Obviouslyright for pop fans and for punters.

JANE MORGANLove Makes The World Go Round;The Second Time Around (LondonHLR 9683)THERE are some who rate Jane as the

best pop balladeer among theworld's ladies. Here she has a ballad inthe best traditions of her previous hits.She sings so wonderfully in tune and inkeeping with the mood of the song. Un-obtrusive backing, swirling into a full-blooded string -laden finish. It's very, verygood. The shame is that it probablywon't be rated, chart -wise. Choir chantthe title to start the flip, then .lane coniesin to produce some more bell -like tonalqualities. Good . . . but not as good asthe top side.

ONEof those "sha-lal-lal-la" choral

bits introduces the talented Barbara.It's a fair ballad, with a certain feelingof charm. Barbara infuses plenty of per-sonality into the proceedings but it'shardly strong enough to challenge thefew remaining birds in the charts. Still,we could be wrong about that. Flip hasmore "body" to it, both vocally and in-strumentally. It's a routine sort of beat -ballad, but Barbara extracts again thefull merit from the lyrics. Choir neatlyemployed once more.

THE EAGLESThe Desperados; Special Agent (Pye15503)THE EAGLES have already had a taste

of fame and they do manage to pro-vide a reasonably different sound.Guitar -dominated, of course, and "TheDesperados" is a routine sort of com-position. It's certainly no worse than somany of the instrumentals, but the prob-lem is whether it is sufficiently unusualto find chart success. Worth watching,nonetheless. It's much the same formulaon "Special Agent". In a less crowdedweek for singles it would have stood outmuch more. Line up of the group pre-vents too much experimentation.

finding himself with quite a hit onhis hands in the States. He displays thatfar-fetched stratospheric voice on alively beat ballad, with a hard-workingbacking. This falsetto stuff often worksout fine-and it must gather plenty ofsales. His girl has gone off. The gypsydoesn't do a lot to console him. Mr.Christie is . . . yes, fantastic. He sobersdown quite a lot for the oldie on the flip.This one displays him in a rather quietlypleasant light.

HOYTAXTON is building well on the.

ballad kick in the States. He fre-quently works to audiences of lumber-jacks ... to night-club groups as well."Greenback Dollar" is his own compo-sition-and it's a well -sung little number,barely catchy enough for chart successbut certainly entertaining. He justploughs through the lyrics, aidedoccasionally by a choral group. Authen-tically folksey. "The Crawdad Song" isslower and sadder, fitted out with someintricate guitar work.

There is so much happening on thistwo -album set that it is difficult to pickout the highlights. But let me assure you,readers, that Tony Bennett is at hismagnificent best on this programme. Heis backed by a most sympathetic orch-estra under the baton of Ralph Sharon.Ile has some of the best songs ever writ-ten to act as a foundation for hisi 'table style.

All that I can really say is buy the setand enjoy it as I know you will.

This is great stuff even if uncorruner-dal in million -sales talk, and the ladslit smoothly into the rhythms of theBossa Nova. So smoothly in fact thatyou feel they were born with a silverBossa Nova beat etc.

Just listen to those harmonies and thebrilliant techniques in general.

She's now tearing them up in hallsthroughout Britain. And she will con-tinue to flip her fans when thisLP gets around. You just shouldn't bewithout this album it really is awinner where Little Eva fans are con-cerned.

ITS FRANK AGAIN !AND the fantastic, fabulous Frank has done it again. "Wayward Wind", despite

very considerable opposition, has made the top spot-giving this amiableAustralian his THIRD chart -topper on the trot. At one stage, it looked as if theBeatles might prevent this run-or even Del Shannon. But Frank made it . . .

Fast progress of Bobby Vee, from 14 to four with "Night Has A Thousand Eyes",should be the next Number One.

More fast progress: The Rooftop Singers and "Walk Right In"; Joe Brown'sexceptional "That's What Love Will Do" ; Bill Fury's "Like I've Never Been Gone";"Hey Paula", by Paul and Paula.

Biggest of the new 'uns was totally predictable. Cliff and "Summer Holiday"shoots from nowhere to 27, while "Bachelor Boy", now estimated a million -seller, isthere still at nine. Richard Chamberlain is moving, too, with "Hi Lili Hi Lo"-asis the earnest John Leyton and "Cupboard Love". Billie Davis makes slow but sureprogress with "Tell Him" but, at last, there's a sign of one of the opposition entries,that by the Exciters. Interesting point: seventeen of the listed discs are by varioussized GROUPS.

LITTLE EVA CONFESSES TO THE NRM

`I'm Frightened'(She'd hate to disappoint her fans)

ONE single-and Little Eva becomes a big success. She cuts her first L.P., whichlJ is being rush -released by Decca here to coincide with her tour. And LittleEva admits to being "FRIGHTENED at the prospect of disappointing my new-found public."

That's the sort of gal she is. The worrying kind. But she lost some of herfears when she realised that her song -writing mates and sponsors Gerry Coffinand Carole King were behind her. Not to mention the record producers, Al Nevinsand Don Kirshner.

It's quite an album. For a start, youcouldn't have a younger combinationof talent involved. Gerry, for instance,is only 23. His wife, Carole King, is buta slip of a lass at 20-and she had herown share of the limelight as a singerwith "It Might As Well Rain UntilSeptember".

Messrs. Nevins and Kirshner arehardly sprouting beards.

But what knocks me out about thealbum is the fact that Bobby Darin, whois hardly eloquent usually about otherstars' performances, has contributedsome highly -glowing words of praise.

He writes that he has eagerly awaitedLittle Eva's first L.P. since he firststarted digging "Locomotion". He says:"If you are already a Little Eva fan, asI am, you're going to be very proud ofyour foresight as a talent scout after youhear this album. On the other hand, ifyou're hearing her for the first time, getready for the thrill of discovery".

Bobby Darin, one of the greats, saidTHAT:

Incidentally, this album "LIIIloco-Motion" features an orchestra conductedby Carole King, which makes her themost attractive orchestra -leader in thebusiness. The arrangements were byCarole and Claude Ogerman, and GerryCoffin handled the production. The ac-companying vocal group are the Cookies,

a young session lot who have long beenfavourites of Little Eva.

INVENTORDid you know that Little Eva actually

invented the Loco -Motion? The baby-sitting -for -Carole -King bit is old hat.But while Carole worked at the piano,Eva quickly picked up the new melodyand spontaneously began inventing dancesteps. While Gerry looked on (a notunpleasant sight as Little Eva is ashapely wee lass), he was reminded of atrain's motion and excitedly began tosketch out the lyric form for the number.

Just a few hours later, the three ofthem were demonstrating the song andthe dance for the Kirshner -Nevins duo.The idea was to give the number toanother singer-a well-known singer, bythe way. But Little Eva did it so well,she was invited to make her first disc.

Now comes the album. Seven of thenumbers were penned by the prolificfirm of Coffin and King. They are:"Win You Love Me Tomorrow?" "Shar-ing You", "Up On The Roof", "WhereDo I o?", "Down Home", "SomeKind -a Wonderful", and, inevitably, the"Loco -Motion".

"Breaking Up Is Hard To Do", byNeil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield, is

also included. Gerry wrote "Run ToHer" with Jack Keller and "He Is TheBoy" with Dee Ervin.

by Bernstein and Sondheim and "Up-town", by Barry Mann and CynthiaWeil.

Now back to the "frightened" LittleEva and that L.P. session. She wasgiven several of her own favourite songsto do, which helped her settle in on theatmosphere of the session.

Messrs. Nevins and Kirshner declaredthemselves amazed at the way she tackled"I Have A Love", from "West SideStory". She demonstrated a one -octave -and -six range which the two experts feltsure would give her a future career as asinger of "legitimate proportions".

It really is a staggeringly good album,which bodes nothing but good for thepleasant little girl who admits that shehas become secretly engaged ... butwho's keeping the secret for just as longas she can.

SHATTERED

To say that Little Eva is shattered byall that is going on would be an under-statement. Everyone who has met, orseen hor, on this current tour of Britainis waiting for the release of her newsingle, "Let's Turkey Trot". She'salready shown the way she does thisdance on the well -watched BBC-tv pro-gramme "Tonight"-where she turnedup only a few minutes before the filming

was due to begin but still turned in alively performance.

WONDERFULSaid Little Eva this week: "The

British folk have all been wonderful. Ican't remember enjoying myself more,anywhere. When I go back to America,around March 4, I have a lot of personalappearances lined up. But I just knowthat I'll want to get back to Britain andmeet up again with my new friends."

There are those who believe that theLittle Eva career was based, purely andsimply, on a gimmick. This album will,

I suspect, open their old peepersthan somewhat to the exceptionalof talent she shows.

aspirins to kill a toothache . . . AndLarry Parnes, the man with the biggestworries of all, calmly looked at his watch.

"I've always been interested in flamencomusic," said Joe Brown. "We decidedto put in the Spanish folk dance 'ElRelicario' and we're hoping to get itover with acoustic guitars."

For Rolf Harris, the tour is a newexperience. It is the first time he's donethis kind of work.

"Any new discs coming out?" I asked.

ALBUM"I've just finished my first L.P. It's

being rushed out in March and to every-one's amazement it's titled 'Sun Arise',"he laughed. "Apart from 'Sun Arise' and'Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport', thereare twelve other tracks. I've recordedanother number for it called 'Hair OilOn My Ears' which I was inspired towrite as a result of a cabaret show Idid in Canada. That night I got terriblyhot and sweaty and my glasses keptsliding off because of the hair oil."

Also making their first appearance ina touring package show as a star attrac-tion are the Tornados.

"We've toured before," whisperedspokesman Clem Cattini. "But never onour own. We've been rehearsing footmovements, but it seems whatever we dowith our feet, the movements will be com-pared with the. Shadows. But what elsecan you do, apart from jumping up anddown or turning cartwheels?"

ONLY GIRLSusan Maughan is the only girl on the

show. She was relaxing in her dressingroom quite calmly.

"This is my first big tour" she said,

"although I have been doing one nightstands in the Midlands. Manchester andLiverpool area doing similar material.but we've had to cut down for the showbecause there are so many artists in it".

Jess Conrad was looking happy. Hisnew stage suit had arrived just beforecurtain up.

"It's fabulous isn't it," he beamed. "Itgives the impression that it's gold becauseof the gold braid and I've got a duplicatepair of trousers because I damage theknees when I kneel on the stage duringmy act."

Eden Kane just had time to tell methat he is now having acting lessonstwice a week, studying the Stanislayskymethod.

"There is some talk of me playing thepart of an Arab in a new film," he said.

Peter Jay was excited about their new"Monster Mash" number which is thehighlight of their act.

"We've never done it on stage before.We all dress up as various monsters-we don't really need the masks," helaughed.

"We're not including any of ourrecord titles in the act," Shane Fentontold me. "We thought we'd get awayfrom them for the show."

FILMShane Fenton recently filmed a spot

in the Tommy Steele picture "It's AllHappening".

"I sing a number called 'SomebodyElse Not Me'. The scene is set in a filmstudio. It's a good beaty ballad."

Finally I talked to Larry Parnes andasked him what were the main difficultiesin putting on such an all-star bill.

"Well, I don't think there is a bigdifficulty. One makes ones own difficul-

ties" he said. "It depends on how calmyou keep and how organised you are,and how organised the people workingaround you are. I think you must giveyourselves plenty of time by starting veryearly in the morning and get everybodyin the theatre on time. You have to haveco-operative artists and stage crew com-pletely working with you, that way youget a high spirited show."

AND THE SHOW ITSELF: For mymoney, Rolf Harris gave the most enter-taining performance with his relaxedstyle and easy humour. Susan Maughanshowed professional polish and was wellreceived by both sexes. Joe Brown andthe Bruvvers were in top form as alwaysand got a good reception and tremendousapplause at the end of the Spanish numberwhich had worried him so much. TheTornados opened with their currentAmerican hit "Ridin' The Wind" andsoon proved worthy of their great follow-ing. Jess Conrad looked great, which,alas, is more than I can say for his per-formance. I still prefer him as an actor,rather than as a singer. But he causedthe screamers to work overtime! PeterJay and the Jaywalkers were their usualbrilliant hard-working selves. I've yet tosee a group work as hard as this onedoes on stage. Eden Kane's act lackedpersonality but nevertheless he provedhe had many fans in the audience. ShaneFenton, in the difficult spot followingRolf Harris, soon got into his frenziedact which drew the biggest screams ofthe night. Compere Al Paige, as alwayshelps the show swing along with hisbreezy humour. Newcomers Peter Lodge,The Diggeroos, Mike and Tony Nevittshow they have potential talent but needa lot more experience. Special praise foryoung Daryl Quist, a new singing dis-covery who I think will make a big namefor himself on this tour.
