stay safe New Orleans is a city unlike any other. However, like other big cities it is a place that has its own set of struggles and dangers. Below are some tips to staying safe while visiting.

Be Aware – Bourbon Street is a playground for scammers and thieves. Be aware of your belongings and surroundings and ALWAYS pay attention to your open drinks.

Buddy System – Always have someone with you when you’re out and about and NEVER go down alleyways. Try to stick to highly populated areas and cab it if you are going somewhere more than a few blocks away.

Leave the bling at home – Flashy jewelry mixed with a girl in high heels is an easy target to knock down, rob and run. Purses should have a strap that allows it to go diagonally across your body. Watch your phone while taking pictures as well.

Things to Do

Louis Armstrong Park 32-acre park located in the Treme neighborhood.

Gray Line Cocktail Tour Located in the French Quarter the tour departs at 4pm daily from the Gray Line Light House Ticket office located between Toulouse St and the Mississippi River. Reservations are recommended. The tour is $29.

French Market Located close to Jackson Square this unique market hosts an eclectic mix of restaurants and stands of sellers pawning off New Orleans trinkets.

Marie Laveau’s House of Voodoo Marie Laveau was the most famous and powerful Voodoo queen of New Orleans. She was respected and feared by all. Voodoo in New Orleans was a blend of West African religion and Catholicism. This shop offers a wide variety of items for sale that aide in the learning of voodoo and its

history.

The Old New Orleans Rum Distillery Although located on Frenchman street the Rum Distillery offers a complimentary shuttle service from the Organic Banana in the French Market. The shuttle picks ups at 11:30am, 1:30pm and 3:30pm Monday through Saturday. The Organic banana is stall #27 near the Joan of Arc Statue.

Tours are around $15 per person. This distillery is America’s oldest Rum Distillery. This 45 minute tour includes a welcome cocktail and tasting of products.

Tree of Life This tree can be found at the exit to the riverfront park behind the Audubon Zoo on East Drive.

French Quarter Tasting Tour The Tour starts at 1:30pm and is approximately 3 hours. Tickets are $55 per person. You will tour select historic restaurants while discussing their culinary contributions.

Jackson Square Historic park located in the French Quarter. It is the site where in 18063 Louisiana was made a US territory pursuant to the Louisiana Purchase.

Tabasco Plant on Avery Island Located 2 hours west of New Orleans the Tabasco Plant will teach you everything you ever wanted to know about McIlhenny Company, the McIlhenny family and their beloved Pepper Sauce. Fascinating exhibits, artifacts, videos & more.

Next door you will find a 170-acre semitropical garden that stretches along the Bayou Petite Anse on Avery Island.

Ghosts of New Orleans Tour For $20 you tour haunted places around the French Quarter including the LaLaurie Mansion (her story featured in American Horror Story)

Abita Brewery Located one hour North of New Orleans is the Abita Brewery. They have guided tours and a tap room onsite. To get there you have to go over Lake Pontchatrain on a 25 mile long bridge.

This French Quarter staple is made famous for its beignets! It’s a must try for any NOLA visitor!

Slim Goodies Diner This Uptown Diner boasts having the “best hangover cure” which they call the “Jewish Coonass”. Two potato Latkes topped with eggs your way, spinach, crawfish etouffee and a warm biscuit. Also recommended: The Creole Slammer!

Merchant This French Quarter restaurant is a must go to for their Crepes.

Atchafalaya Located Uptown it is the hottest brunch spot for live music and the best build your own bloody mary bar. Brunch hours are Friday 11am-2:30pm and Sat/Sun 10am-2:30pm.

Recommended? Eggs Atchafalaya. Fried green tomatoes topped with poached eggs, jumbo lump crabmeat, hollandaise and a side of potatoes.
