Money matters

The Government Student Loans Company,Student Finance England, facilitates the allocationand repayment of loans to Higher Educationstudents in the UK. There are a few financialpackages available that could help you pay forthe costs of studying:

Tuition Fee Loan Covers the full cost of tuition fees over theduration of your course. Your fees are paid directlyfrom Student Finance England to us, so no need toworry about paperwork or paying fees on time!

Maintenance Loan A loan to help with living costs. Students fromlower income households may be eligible formore.

Maintenance Grant A grant of to £3,250 per year available to lowerincome households. This is free money that youdo not have to pay back. If your householdincome is under £25,000 you will get the fullgrant. Households with incomes between £25,000and £42,500 will get a proportion of the grant.

Additional SupportYou could be eligible for more financial support ifyou have a disability or learning difficulty or if youhave adults or children who are dependent onyou.

Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) Local Education Authorities (LEAs) can awardDSAs to part-time and full-time undergraduatestudents who can show that they have a disability,mental health conditions or specific learningdifficulty which affects their ability to study. TheDSA help pay for any extra costs you have to payas a direct result of your learning disability orlearning difficulty. The allowance can help with thecost of a non-medical personal helper, items ofspecialist equipment, travel and other course-related costs.

AimThis one year full-time course provides abroad introduction to art and design,preparing you for application to highereducation courses and help with yourfuture career aspirations.

ContentThe programme is characterised byexperimental and experiential learning.

This course is enriched with a variety ofproject linked visits, including a 5-dayresidential in a European city.Additionally, a comprehensive liberalstudies programme with visitingspeakers from a wide range ofprofessional backgrounds ensures thatstudents become aware of the demandsof art and design and recognise thecommon principles and distinctivecharacteristics of subject disciplines.

A high value is placed on independentresearch and self motivated study.

The programme allows students to takeideas and explore the possibilitiesthrough a range of visual and craftprocesses.

As the course progresses, studybecomes more focused within thestudent's specialist area of choice.Specialisms include; visual studies, 3Dstudies, graphics, illustration, spatialdesign, printmaking, photography, film,fashion and textiles.

Entry requirementsEither one arts based A Level or avocationally relevant qualification (suchas Extended Diploma). You will need 5GCSEs A* - C including English or Level2 Diploma with a merit grade. You willneed to provide a portfolio at interview.Mature students can offer life skills as analternative to formal qualifications.

Extra informationIt is the preferred qualification for mostart based university courses and themajority of top Universities still requirethe Foundation qualification. Statisticallystudents acquiring Foundation are far

more likely to complete an arts degreethan those without. A Foundation pass isworth 120, merit 180, Distinction 240UCAS points. It is also a recognisedaccess course for mature students withfew formal qualifications.

Foundation Degree in Applied Studies(Early Childhood)

AimThis 2 year, one afternoon and eveningeach week, course is intended for adultsworking, volunteering or leading withinchildren's services across a range ofsettings and provisions.

This work based course combinespractice based learning and campus-based sessions once a week so that youare able to continue in employment. It isdesigned to improve and develop yourpersonal and professionalcommunication skills, to developknowledge of new ways of working andto challenge existing assumptions.

Content The course is organised into two levels,each comprising four modules to becompleted over two years. Each moduleis awarded 30 credits.

You will examine principles of learningas an introduction to higher educationand investigate the complexrelationships affecting learning. You willconsider the philosophies underpinningcurrent UK practice within a legislativeframework and examine thepsychological and sociological theorieswhich impact on this within a relativecontext.

During the second year you will explorethe ideology underpinning inclusiveeducation and practice and undertakean action research project. You will alsoconsider the diverse ways children learnboth formally and informally. You will alsoaddress issues relating to children'srights and supporting families.

This Early Childhood course has beenfully recognised by the CWDC asappropriate for early years practitioners.

Assessment A variety of assessment methods areused including group and individualpresentations, written assignments suchas essays and reports, case studies,discussions, debate, portfolios of work-based learning and examination.

Entry requirementsYou will normally have a relevantqualification at level three, for example Alevel in Psychology or Sociology, BTECDiploma in Children's Care, Learningand Development, or Health and SocialCare.

You will also have a minimum of oneyears experience (two years isdesirable) in a voluntary or paid roleworking with children.You must also have a current CRB(Enhanced Disclosure) or ISAregistration.

Career opportunities Foundation Degree graduates frequentlytake on higher level of roles specialisingin areas such as family liaison, specialeducation needs, managing settings inearly years or roles in the widercommunity and with local authorities.The programme has evolved to respondto the demand for graduateprofessionals set by the Governmentthrough the professionalisation of thechildren's and youth workforce (DCSF2008).

Aim This two year full time qualification hasbeen designed by industry specialists tomeet individual practical, work basedneeds. It aims to provide opportunitiesfor students to gain industry experiencein their specialist area and in otheracademic and practical areas of theMusic Industry.

Content (to include assessment methods) Work-Based Learning Modules in thefirst and second year allow the student tofocus on their specialist area.

For example • A performing role (session musician,

artist, songwriter etc), • A technical role (Sound technician,

Recording Engineer, Producer etc)• A business role (A & R, Artist

The Personal Professional DevelopmentModule looks at the skills and qualitiesincluding networking, additionalqualifications and personal skills.

AssessmentAssessment will be by means of aportfolio of written evidence, casestudies and critical analyses of theprocesses in teaching and learning.Practical teaching will be assessed byregular observations in the candidate’swork place.

Duration A two year part-time course for thoseemployed in a full teaching role for aminimum of 150 hours in each of the twoyears on the course.

Entry requirementsAll candidates must be suitably qualifiedin their own subject area, normally to atleast FE Level 3 and/or would havesubstantial industrial experience.Acceptance onto the course is subject toan interview with the programme leader.

Career opportunitiesSuccessful completion will enableregistration with the Institute for Learning(IfL) and after a period of successfulprofessional formation, will lead toQualified Teacher Status – Learning &Skills (QTLS). The programme isendorsed by SVUK (StandardsVerification UK) and is recognised asmeeting the qualification requirementsfor those engaged in teaching in theLifelong Learning sector.
