Studying your chosen HE course at Calderdale College gives you access to excellent teaching and outstanding personal support; both are essential to your success. Whatever your ambition, Calderdale College will provide a friendly and stimulating environment in which you can study and succeed. Our focus is your success, both on your chosen course and as you progress in your chosen career.

The College has been recognised for the quality of its courses, we were proud to receive the highest judgements possible in our last QAA review of Higher Education, and our most recent Ofsted inspection judged us ‘Good with Outstanding Features’.

I am immensely proud of our students’ achievements at Higher Education level, and I look forward to celebrating them at our annual Graduation Ceremony, held in the imposing Victoria Theatre in the centre of Halifax each year.

I know that the combination of high quality, innovative courses and the excellent support from our team makes Calderdale College an outstanding choice for your university level education.

Please come and visit Calderdale College, talk to our staff and students and I am sure you will be impressed.

It means you’ll be taught by enthusiastic experts with the kind of first-hand experience that makes learning more interesting. Better still, you’ll get the skills and knowledge your chosen industry really looks for in job applicants.

Stay connectedOur campus is close to the vibrant centre of Halifax, so it’s easy to reach by road and rail whether you’re travelling from nearby, or from Leeds or Manchester. It also means there’s plenty to do right on your doorstep, whether it’s nipping out between lectures or nights out with new friends.

Save moneyWith one of the lowest tuition fees in West Yorkshire and flexible finance options to suit your situation, studying with us is always an affordable choice. In fact, you could save up to

£3,000 per year compared to university fees, and you’ll only start repaying once you earn over £21,000.

Learn your wayWe do everything we can to make learning with us fit around you and your lifestyle. From smaller, more intimate class sizes and excellent study support to our wide range of both full and part-time courses to suit your availability better, we want to make learning easier and less stressful, not just enjoyable and interesting.

We make sure they are just that, with relevant and up-to-date courses often including invaluable work experience to help get your CV noticed.

A Unique Place to Learn and GrowFrom the quality of our teaching and the low cost of our courses to fantastic facilities everyone can enjoy, there are lots of reasons why studying at Calderdale College is a great move. Over the years we’ve listened to the people who study here, and these are the key things that really made their experience special.

Think of the facilitiesWe understand that learning isn’t just more enjoyable in nice surroundings; it’s easier and more effective too. That’s why we’ve invested in high-quality learning areas as well as state-of-the-art facilities for more technical or specialised areas such as studio recording, dance and theatre. In 2011, we spent £14m on our Inspire Sports & Fitness Centre, and just two years ago we opened a £6m Technology Centre. Of course, our dedicated IT systems are fast and reliable too, which makes studying smoother, quicker and less stressful.

Work hard, play harderStudying hard is great, but the very best results come when there’s a healthy balance between work and play. To help you achieve this, we’ve made it a priority to give students the facilities they need for looking after themselves and enjoying their college time as much as possible. That’s why you can relax with a manicure or massage at our on-site Full Works Hair and Beauty Salon. If you’ve energy to burn, join our state-of-the-art gym, catch a fitness class or test your nerve on our indoor climbing wall.

Graduate in styleJust like university, we celebrate the success of every student with a traditional yearly graduation ceremony held in the splendid surroundings of Halifax’s Victoria Theatre. Joining in with our procession through Halifax is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to mark your achievement and celebrate in style with family and friends. It’s also a fantastic photo opportunity!

Access Courses Our Access to HE Diploma Course is usually a one-year course designed for anyone aged 19 and over who doesn’t have the formal qualifications to get into Higher Education directly. It can prepare students who haven’t been in education for a while, helping them return to study in a supportive environment.

“The range of different skills I have learnt has provided excellent preparation for moving into Higher Education.”David Palmer Access to Higher Education Diploma Art & Design

You can study these courses on a full-time basis, and they often use flexible timetables to take into account family and work commitments. You’ll be supported in making an application to a Higher Education programme, including help with searching for the right course at college or university. You can also get help with accessing funding or grants from LEA or appropriate bodies, and even help completing the application form too.

Foundation Degrees Foundation Degrees are still relatively new qualifications, and they’re designed to meet the skills needs of today’s workplaces.

These degrees help build new links between universities, colleges and employers by combining the academic and vocational routes to higher-level qualifications. They also mix academic study with workplace learning.

Foundation Degrees offer great benefits to full and part-time students. For students already in employment, assessment is often built around the individual workplace setting, and this benefits the employee as well as the employer. These degrees have also helped bring more people into Higher Education from a wider mix of backgrounds.

A Foundation Degree is roughly equal to the first two years of a Bachelor’s Degree (or a Diploma in Higher Education) and is a Level 5 qualification. It’s possible to ‘Top-Up’ your Foundation Degree to a full Honours Degree by studying further, and you can often progress from a Foundation Degree to further professional qualifications.

Here at Calderdale College, we deliver Foundation Degrees in collaboration with our partner university.

Bachelor’s DegreesA Bachelor’s Degree is the traditional degree qualification in Higher Education you would get from a university. It is a Level 6 qualification and leads to a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc). Depending on the subject you choose, it normally takes three or four years to complete full-time.

Qualifications

13 Contact the Admissions Team on 01422 399 399 or email: [email protected]

Page 17: Calderdale College HE Prospectus 2016

You can progress onto a one year BA top-up after successfully completing an FD or HND qualification. Because these are separate qualifications, this gives you the flexibility to move on to a different HE provider and complete your top-up there, should you want to. There is no obligation to continue on to the top-up year at the same provider where you completed your FD or HND. We regularly receive applications for our top-up courses from students who have completed their FD at a different college or university.

‘Honours’ Level covers degrees with titles such as Bachelor of Arts, BA (Hons), Bachelor of Science, BSc (Hons), or Bachelor of Engineering, BEng (Hons). These degrees are full university equivalent qualifications delivered at universities and colleges, and they’re known as a Level 6 qualification.

If you have ‘Hons’ after your BA, then you have completed a BA with ‘Honours’. Without the ‘Hons’ you have gained an ‘Ordinary’ BA. The difference between an Ordinary and an Honours Degree is simply credit points, with an Honours Degree studied in the UK usually providing 360 credit points and an Ordinary Degree equating to 300 credit points. Most Bachelor’s Degrees are Honours Degrees.

Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND)HNC and HND are more vocational courses provided by colleges and some universities. While Bachelor Degrees tend to focus on gaining knowledge, HNC and HND courses

are designed to give you the practical skills as well as the theoretical knowledge that a job might require. These qualifications are valued highly by employers in the UK and abroad, they can also count towards membership of professional bodies and other employer organisations. You can study for a HNC or HND in a wide range of subjects.

Calderdale College’s Higher National qualifications don’t just qualify you for work; many HNCs and HNDs can help you get directly onto a degree programme.

What did you do before studying for your PGCE?At present I am a Nursery Manager and regularly train my staff team in Early Years and various issues surrounding Early Years Care and Education. I have been out of education since completing my BA (Hons) and Early Years Professional Status in 2010. It has been a smooth transition coming back into learning because the course is structured well and the support has been great. I can see a difference in my staff team and myself and I am really enjoying it.

Why did you choose Calderdale College?I chose Calderdale College because the course was recommended to me and the location was convenient.

What do you think of your course?I am studying the course part-time, one evening a week. I look forward to coming to College on a Tuesday, even after a day at work. I have enjoyed all the modules studied so far; everything is relevant and I have particularly enjoyed working with a mixed group of students, even though initially this was something I was nervous about. It makes the course more interesting and different people’s specialisms can bring different angles and perspectives to what we are learning in each session.

Name: Donna Milward

The workload isn’t too demanding if you organise your time well and the support I have received both with personal issues and College work has been excellent. I thoroughly enjoy the course and everything I am learning lends itself to my current profession, as well as making me feel I am developing and gaining qualifications for my future.

What skills have you gained?Throughout the first year of the course I have developed the ability to reflect on my own skills and practice. This has helped me improve the way I train my team at work. I have also been strengthening my English and mathematics, as these are skills I have not actively used since last being in education.

All these things are massive confidence builders and I can see a positive difference already in the way I do things, through my students and in myself. When doing assignments and teaching practice I have unconsciously developed my ICT skills and built a better understanding of the expected teaching standards I am aiming to achieve. The course lends itself to whatever you are already doing and builds and develops it in the directions you wish to take it.

I can see each students’ experience is tailored to their needs really well to build and develop their desired skills easily and effectively. It has definitely made me feel more professional and able to celebrate my strengths and build on my weaknesses.

“It has been a smooth transition coming back into learning because the course is structured well and the support in all aspects has been great.”

What do you think of your tutors? My tutors are brilliant; they are really supportive, approachable and friendly. They have a fresh approach to teaching, with lots of new ideas that are really inspiring. They have taught me leadership skills and I aim to take on their approach to teaching.

Why did you choose Calderdale College?I thought it would benefi t me more than sixth form, I wanted to be a bit more independent. I was looking all over the place and someone recommended Calderdale as being a really good College with good courses. I came to the open day and really enjoyed it, and the tutors were nice. I said to them straight away that ‘I’ve got to come here’, so I came back for an interview with all of my coursework and I was given a place. I started out on a Level 3 BTEC and now I’m on the HND course. I decided to stay on to do my HND course as I felt comfortable at the College and with my tutors, I’d also made quite a few friends.

What do you like about College? The facilities here are really good, the Sports Centre, the Gym and the help provided by Student Services.

What do you think of your tutors? The tutors are pretty amazing, they have given me a lot more confi dence and they are always there if you need any help and offer advice.

What does your qualifi cation mean to you?My qualifi cation is really important. I enjoy art and it’s great to do something you enjoy and after this I am hoping to go to university to do a top-up degree. I want to specialise in Graphic Design or Illustration.

What’s your ultimate goal? I would like to produce art for a living and I would like to do a few exhibitions, have some good feedback and maybe sell a few pieces. That would be my ultimate goal.

How would you sum up the College in three words? Exciting, confi dence building and encouraging.

Would you recommend Calderdale College to students thinking of doing your course and why?Yes I would, they have really good facilities. The College has everything you need, the tutors are really nice and friendly and will help you with anything you need. You can do all sorts here, you’ve got a lot of freedom, you’ll gain confi dence and become more independent.

Why did you choose your course?I’ve been working for my dad’s company since I was 18 and I got my A Levels, then I decided a few years ago that I needed to get something under my belt and not rely on that all of the time. I had a look online and saw that Calderdale College did this course and I applied for it, got it and just cracked on with it really.

Why did you choose Calderdale College?Because they offered the right course and the times and the qualifi cation was appropriate and I thought it would probably pay off in the long run if I went for the course.

What has been your best moment at Calderdale College?Probably graduating.

What do you think of your tutors?I really like them. My tutor was really nice and helpful all the way through.

How would you sum up the College in three words?Encouraging, supportive and friendly.

What’s your ultimate goal? After you’ve done a course you kind of get a bit addicted to learning. The reason behind it was for me to get more information to be able to use in my job and I have had a promotion off the back of it and I’m now on the road, which is where I wanted to be, so I have achieved that. I think probably in the next fi ve years I might end up doing something else but I’m not sure yet.

Would you recommend Calderdale College and if so why?Yes, defi nitely because it’s not a full-time commitment, you can still have a full-time job. It’s a lot of work involved, but it pays off in the long run.

What do you think about Calderdale College?I think it’s great, I had a hard time at sixth form and decided to come to Calderdale College and it’s been amazing.

What do you think of your tutors? My tutors are great they are like real people, not like teachers, they are more like colleagues.

What does this qualifi cation mean to you? This is the next step on my road to becoming a professional actor and all my hard work has paid off.

What’s your next step?I have just started my Performance Arts BA (Honours) Top-Up Degree and hope to get that fi nished, then hopefully pursue professional acting.

Would you recommend Calderdale College and if so why?I would and have recommended Calderdale College because the people are so approachable and kind. The tutors on my course are ex-professionals and know exactly what the industry is looking for.

Professional CoursesMARKETING

This thriving profession offers an exciting range of career opportunities across both the public and private sectors. The CIM qualification is widely recognised by employers and institutions alike, and these up-to-the-minute courses give you the skills and expertise today’s employers demand.

The Foundation Certificate is perfect for anyone planning a move into marketing or already in a marketing support role; this qualification covers the two mandatory areas of Marketing Principles and Marketing Communications. You’ll learn about the role and function of marketing, the ‘marketing mix’, target audiences, communication methodologies and building a marketing plan.

The Certificate is aimed at junior marketers and anyone whose everyday job involves marketing-related tasks. Mandatory elements cover the role and function of marketing in more detail than the Foundation Certificate, and you’ll cover areas like customer behaviour, adapting the ‘marketing mix’ and integrated communications for internal and external audiences.

This qualification also gives you the choice of studying either Customer Experience or Digital Marketing – two key areas in marketing today. Customer Experience explores ways of delivering, monitoring and measuring a consistent and satisfying customer experience.

Get the skills and expertise you need for marketing, and the confidence you need for marketing yourself.

The biggest county in England, Yorkshire is as diverse and exciting as it gets, not to mention friendly and beautiful. It’s a county with a world-famous identity, and a place with almost limitless opportunities to explore, have fun and enjoy the kind of adventures your student life should be full of. Little wonder that in 2014 Lonely Planet voted this county the third best place to visit in the whole world!

The greatest outdoorsWith the famously rugged Pennines , Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors National Parks close by, this is every outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. From stunning beauty spots like Malham, Hardcastle Crags and the famous ‘Yorkshire Three Peaks’ to remote hills and dales, perfect for getting away from it all. Yorkshire is a great place for activities like hiking, biking, camping, photography and nature watching.

Charming towns and villages are another Yorkshire speciality. Living here gives you access to picturesque fishing villages hugging coastal cliffs, tiny hamlets unchanged in centuries and thriving spa and market towns perfect for

pottering around. There are beautiful beaches too, including family-friendly places like Sandsend as well as more secluded coves great for exploring.

Must-have shopping From city-centre retail giants and the latest high-street fashions to quirky independent boutiques in places like Hebden Bridge, there’s shopping for every style and budget. Leeds’ impressive Trinity Centre has more than 120 shops, bars and restaurants, while Meadowhall in Sheffield is the region’s most popular shopping destination and a fabulous choice for beauty products and spa services. Closer to home, Halifax has its very own Woolshops Shopping Centre with 40 stores and cafés.

The Piece Hall, is a Grade I Listed building conservation project creating a 21st century heritage visitor attraction, with cafés and restaurants, a wealth of independent specialist shops, and a select number of creative business premises. The 60,000 square foot courtyard, with its fantastic arcades and colonnades, offers a beautiful central meeting place for the town, and one of the most stunning outdoor event spaces in Britain. Don’t forget Yorkshire’s famous indoor and second-hand markets – great for grabbing a bargain or discovering something totally unique!

History and cultureHistory and culture are everywhere you look in Yorkshire, and much of it is free to enjoy. York is a world-class city almost uniquely rich in history, while the whole county offers the chance to visit

castles, monuments and stately homes, or just soak up the heritage all around. If you like museums, you’ll love visiting our six national museums: Royal Armouries, National Coal Mining Museum, National Media Museum, National Railway Museum, Eureka! Children’s Museum and the National Fishing Heritage Museum.

If art and culture are more your thing, we’ve got the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Hepworth Museum, or literature fans can visit the fascinating Brontë Parsonage in picturesque Haworth. There are also many independent galleries and arts festivals galore, covering everything from photography and textiles to comedy and burlesque.

The world on a plateWith a population as diverse as Yorkshire’s, you’d expect food to match. You won’t be disappointed. As well as the freshest fish and chips in places like Whitby, you’ll find some of the best international cafés, restaurants and takeaways in the UK, especially in Yorkshire’s urban areas. South Asian and Far Eastern food is particularly good here, and Bradford was the first UK destination to win ‘Curry Capital of Britain’ three times in a row!

There’s traditional English grub too, and Yorkshire puddings obviously don’t get any better than the ones our pubs serve. For something a little more sophisticated, Yorkshire is home to six Michelin starred restaurants – more than any other county in England.

Live it upYorkshire people love to go out, so visitors reap the rewards of a county full of lively pubs and clubs, world-class theatres like West Yorkshire Playhouse, and some impressive live music venues like the First Direct Arena in Leeds. In Halifax, the Victoria Theatre has a rich programme of events spanning everything from comedy and pantomime to ballet and live music. Near Halifax and around the county, small independent cinemas show art house and world films not screened at the region’s many mainstream cinemas.

Get your kicksSport and leisure is big here in Yorkshire, and whether you’re a spectator or a participant, you’ll be spoilt for choice. As well as plenty of football and rugby teams to follow or play for, there are thriving clubs for everything from athletics, swimming and cycling to golf and ping-pong!

The Yorkshire landscape is perfect for thrill seekers too, so climbers, kayakers, surfers and mountain bikers will definitely feel at home. There’s also go-karting or zip-lining, and Flamingo Land is the UK’s most visited zoo, complete with white-knuckle rides for those who dare. The county’s indoor options include Xscape at Castleford, a state-of-the-art complex with real snow ski slopes, an aerial assault course, 4D golf, laser games, 20-lane bowling and even Yorkshire’s first trampoline park.
