WelcomeAs Principal of New College Stamford it gives me great pleasure and pride to welcomeyou to our 2012-2013 prospectus for all Higher Education (HE) courses in the College.

This prospectus gives you all the information youwill need about life at the College. I hope that youfind it useful in making your decision about thenext stage in your education.

We have a range of Higher Education courses,that we are expanding all the time, and ourcampus provides outstanding facilities for all ourHE students. Whether you wish to take an HND,Foundation Degree or Full Honours Degree, webelieve that you can choose the course at NewCollege Stamford secure in the knowledge thateveryone will be supporting you to achieve yourambition.

We encourage all our HE students to takeresponsibility for their own learning andachievement with our extensive help andguidance. We are committed to responding to theneeds of our students, and we will continue toensure that our course provision is exciting,modern and challenging for our students.

New College Stamford is a very good college,recently confirmed in that status by Inspectionreports from HEFCE, that provides a range ofhigh quality courses, with outstanding student

Small tutorial classesWith relatively small class sizes and dedicated andsupportive staff you can be assured of a learningenvironment where you matter. We canguarantee easy access to your tutors who are allwell qualified and maintain their up-to-dateindustry-related experience.

Support when you need itMaking the commitment to study is a major oneand at times, life may be stressful or difficult. Wehave a long experience of helping students keepon track for success and can provide you withinformation and advice on benefits, grants andloans, support funds for financial emergencies,confidential counselling, professional careersguidance and childcare facilities.

Some of the best facilitiesThe LRC (Learning Resource Centre) is a dedicatedlearning environment with over 15,500 catalogueditems including books, magazines, newspapers,leaflets, feature films and videos. Information filesand over 700 art slides are also available, as wellas computers with access to MS Office software,the internet, e-mail and a range of compact discs.Study spaces are provided alongside separaterooms for silent and group work.

The college has 100 computers in the IT Zone andthe Learning Resource Centre. These computersare available to all students within the College towork on college work and perform research. Eachdepartment within the College has desktopcomputer suites dedicated to the needs of theirstudents and mobile laptop suites to allow greaterflexibility for staff and students alike.

With a total of over 800 computers across collegepurely for student use, we are well equipped toprovide student with the IT resources they need.

All student computers run a minimum ofWindows XP and Office 2003, and we arecurrently working towards a roll-out of Windows7 and Office 2007 to better prepare our studentsfor their future in the business world.

The Visual Arts Centre has base rooms providingcontinual study space for students. Specialiststudy takes place in the specifically equipped lifedrawing room, photographic studio, 3Dworkshops and Apple Macintosh suites.

Easy travelAccess to the College is quick and easy fromacross the region with excellent rail and road linksfrom the north, south, east and west. Cheap railfares from Leicester, Cambridge, Peterboroughand Oakham are all available.

Work, Rest and PlayYou will find plenty of resources at New College Stamford from the traditionallibrary to high specification computer areas. Everywhere is user friendly andwell stocked with the resources you need to assist you with research andgathering materials for assignments.

Learning Resource CentreThis is an area providing books, periodicals,newspapers, journals, computer software andother course-related materials. It combines aspacious general study area with clusters of openaccess and bookable computers and rooms set-aside for silent study or group work.

Staff in the LRC will show you how and where tofind the information you need and if they can’t findthe information then they will direct you tosomeone who can!

A quiet room is available in the LRC for HEstudents.

Information Technology SuiteNew College Stamford has outstanding IT facilitiesavailable for all students to use. Situated above thelibrary, the Open Access IT suite provides state-of-the-art facilities for all students to use when theyneed to. With access to the internet and onlinedatabases you will be able to broaden yourresearch skills whilst working in a comfortableand welcoming environment.

Food & DrinkThe Refectory is centrally situated and open fromearly morning until after lunchtime and servesfresh meals, snacks and drinks at reasonableprices.

New College Stamford also has the Bistro in thenew Welcome Zone selling freshsandwiches/rolls, salads, soup, jacket potatoes,pastries, cakes and much more.

Chill Out!Use the Common Room as a place to chill out andchat to friends or play pool. You can also discussideas with the Student Union team who have theiroffice in the Refectory.

The Equality Shop sells newspapers andmagazines as well as a broad range of Fair Tradeconfectionery and gifts. The shop is run by ourSkills for Work and Living students.

Here to Support You

Sometimes you may need extra help with literacy,numeracy, exam skills, writing an assignment orany other problem that may be worrying you. Wewill arrange support in classroom or on a one-to-one basis in the Study Centre, as required. We mayask you to apply for a disabled student allowance.

If you know you have a learning or physicaldisability or think you may have, don’t let that stopyou doing the course you want to do.

We have experienced staff who will work withyou and your course tutors, to ensure that youget the support you need. When you first come toNew College Stamford you will have theopportunity to take part in an assessment of yourreading, writing and maths as this will help usmake sure we are offering you the right supportand help in the right areas.

You will have the chance to speak with ourDisability Adviser at your interview.

We welcome applications from students whomay need some extra help because you have alearning difficulty or a disability.

During your first few weeks in College your programme co-ordinator will be getting to know you and finding out about the skills you have andwhere you need extra help in order to successfully complete your course.

Careers Guidance and AdviceThis is a very important aspect of support for allour students. Our qualified and experiencedadvisers hold individual careers interviews as wellas offering students information on a range ofthings from applying for graduate trainingschemes, job advice and CV writing.

The Careers Library is situated within theLearning Resource Centre (LRC) and managed ona day-to-day basis to ensure that all theinformation is up-to-date and accurate. There isaccess to the internet and a wide range of careerrelated computer software.

Money Matters Tuition Fees For UK and EU students applying for a full-time higher education course at New CollegeStamford starting in September 2012, thetuition fee will be £5,999 per annum. Feesfor part-time courses may differ – pleasecontact us for details.

When to apply for Student Finance? You can apply online at:www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance as soonas you have applied through UCAS (ordirect), however some students prefer towait until they have a confirmed place.Deadlines for new students to apply aregenerally in April/May.

In line with the Government’s agenda to reduce the UK’s national debt, the funding forHigher Education courses has been cut. Up until 2012, HE institutions could charge up toaround £3,300. The rest of the course fees were subsidised by the Government. Studentscommencing a higher education course in 2012 will have to pay the full cost of theircourse. Universities can now charge from £6,000 - £9,000 per annum for their courses.

Tuition Fees do not have to be paid ‘up front’. Allstudents are eligible to take out a student loanto cover the whole tuition course fee over theduration of your course.

The Government Student Loans Company,Student Finance England, facilitates the allocationand repayment of loans to Higher Educationstudents in the UK. There are a few financialpackages available that could help you pay for thecosts of studying:

Tuition Fee Loan Covers the full cost of tuition fees over theduration of your course. Your fees are paid directlyfrom Student Finance England to us, so no need toworry about paperwork or paying fees on time!

Maintenance Loan A loan to help with living costs. Students fromlower income households may be eligible formore.

Maintenance Grant Up to £3,250 per year available to lower incomehouseholds. This is free money that you do nothave to pay back. If your household income isunder £25,000 you will get the full grant.Households with incomes between £25,000 and£42,500 will get some.

Additional SupportYou could be eligible for more financial support ifyou have a disability or learning difficulty or if youhave adults or children who are dependent on you.

Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)Local Education Authorities (LEAs) can awardDSAs to part-time and full-time undergraduatestudents who can show that they have a disability,mental health conditions or specific learningdifficulty which affects their ability to study. TheDSAs help pay for any extra costs you have to payas a direct result of your learning disability/learning difficulty. The allowance can help with thecost of a non-medical personal helper, items ofspecialist equipment, travel and other course-related costs.

AimThis one year full-time course provides a broadintroduction to art and design, preparing you forapplication to higher education courses. We offer afriendly and supportive environment in which todevelop your abilities, appraise your strengths anddevelop your ideas and skills. We will also enableyou to define and make decisions about yourfuture career aspirations.

ContentThe programme is characterised by experimentaland experiential learning. The programme ofstudy ensures that a full range of teachingexpertise and learning opportunities are provided.

This course is enriched with a variety of projectlinked visits, including a 5-day residential in aEuropean city. Additionally, a comprehensiveliberal studies programme with visiting speakersfrom a wide range of professional backgroundsensures that students become aware of thedemands of art and design and recognise thecommon principles and distinctive characteristicsof subject disciplines. Allowing students to makeinformed career/UCAS choices.

A high value is placed on independent researchand self motivated study. The program aims todevelop a students independent creative thinkingabilities, allowing them to take ideas and explorethe possibilities through a range of visual and craftprocesses. As the course progresses, studybecomes more focused within the student'sspecialist area of choice. Specialisms include;visual studies, 3D studies, graphics, illustration,spatial design, printmaking, photography, film,fashion and textiles.

Progression OpportunitiesThe foundation course at New College Stamfordhas flourished over the last few years to earn anenviable reputation for excellence. The course hasachieved high rates of progression, with manystudents being accepted onto high calibre degreecourses, at prominent universities, to study avariety of specialist subjects.

Extra InformationIt is the preferred qualification for most art baseduniversity courses and the majority of topUniversities still require the Foundationqualification. Statistically students acquiringFoundation are far more likely to complete an artsdegree than those without. A Foundation pass isworth 120, merit 180, Distinction 240 UCAS points.It is also a recognised access course for maturestudents with few formal qualifications.

AimThis course is intended for adults working,volunteering or leading within children's servicesacross a range of settings and provisions.

This work based course combines practice basedlearning and campus-based sessions once a weekso that you are able to continue in employment. Itis designed to improve and develop your personaland professional communication skills, to developknowledge of new ways of working and tochallenge existing assumptions.

Content The Foundation Degree in Applied Studiesaddresses the core skills and knowledge requiredof practitioners working in a range of settings.

The course is organised into two levels, eachcomprising four modules to be completed overtwo years. Each module is awarded 30 credits.

In the first year you will examine principles oflearning as an introduction to higher educationand investigate the complex relationships affectinglearning. You will consider the philosophiesunderpinning current UK practice within alegislative framework and examine thepsychological and sociological theories whichimpact on this within a relative context.

During the second year you will explore theideology underpinning inclusive education andpractice and undertake an action research project.

The Code of Practice and forms are available onrequest.

Career opportunities Foundation Degree graduates frequently take onhigher level of roles specialising in areas such asfamily liaison, special education needs, managingsettings in early years or roles in the widercommunity and with local authorities. Theprogramme has evolved to respond to thedemand for graduate professionals set by theGovernment through the professionalisation of thechildren's and youth workforce (DCSF 2008).

Foundation Degree in Applied Studies (Early Childhood)

You will also consider the diverse ways childrenlearn both formally, within national curricula andinformally. You will also address issues relating tochildren's rights and supporting families.

This Early Childhood course has been fullyrecognised by the CWDC as appropriate for earlyyears practitioners.

Assessment A variety of assessment methods are usedincluding group and individual presentations,written assignments such as essays and reports,case studies, discussions, debate, portfolios ofwork-based learning and examination. Allassessment allows and encourages you to reflecton your practice and theory as you evidence yourlearning.

DurationThe course runs for two years.

Entry requirementsYou will normally have a relevant qualification atlevel three, for example A level in Psychology orSociology, BTEC National Diploma in Children'sCare, Learning and Development, or Health andSocial Care.

You will also have a minimum of one yearsexperience (two years is desirable) in a voluntaryor paid role working with children.

You must also have a current CRB (EnhancedDisclosure)

In accordance with Bishop Grosseteste UniversityCollege conditions, students are entitled to applyfor accredited prior learning (AP(C)L), based onrelevant credit at another HE institution or creditawarded for experiential learning (AP(E)L).

Many Foundation Degree graduates advance tocomplete the honours degree, usually at BGUC,where, as with the foundation degree thisprogression route allows you to study andcontinue to work.
