Vital that you get audience feedback on your promo and
ancillaries. Use questionnaires, or, even better, videoed
interviews. Plan questionshow far your productions
follow conventions / meets expectations, strengths,
areas for improvement, etc

Summarise the taskpromotional materials for analbum releasecomprising a music video promo,CD/DVD digipak and magazine advert. Explain what thePURPOSE of these three elements is in a promotionalpackage.
Describe what is required from a music promo. Describethe repertoire of elements that make up a pop promo:discuss in terms of performance, narrative, camera work,editing, actors, mise-en-scene, etc. Use clips / stills from
professional promos to help illustrate / discuss yourideas. Ensure that you explain how genre affects thestyle of video and define the features of a promo of yourchosen genre. Discuss use of illustration / amplification /disjuncture regarding lyrics.

In what ways do your media products use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of music promos)
You should go through the final version of your production and selectnine distinct frames which you screengrab. You will be using these to
write about how typical or not of opening sequences your particular
design is, so choose them carefully. You could compare the still to
real promos, commenting on conventions.
You should explore how conventional the following are:
Setting/location
Costumes and props
Camerawork and editingGenre and how the opening suggests it
Special effects
Representation
Use of narrative / performance
Amplification / Illustration / Disjuncture re: lyrics

For your ancillary tasks you should compare them to real digipaks /magazine adverts and annotate them to explain how you have used
conventions.
You could comment on:

2. How effective is the combination of your main product
and ancillary texts?
Write about your products as a wholeremember that they are part of a
promotional package for an album releaseso how do they work togetherto achieve this? How do they represent the artist / band?
Comment on exhibitionwhere each element will be seen and how it willrepresent / promote the band. Remember to consider traditional media(music channels, music mags, record stores) and new media (facebook,youtube, iTunes, the web) as potential means of exhibition.
Which music channel will your promo be shown on? Why? Research thechannels audience profile and content to show how your promo will fit in theschedules. What other new media could be used to exhibit the promo?How effective are they? Why?
Which magazine would you place the advert in to promote the CD release?Research the magazines audience profile and content to show how yourpromo will fit in with magazines content. Look at synergetic links betweenmusic magazines and music channelsexplore who owns them!
How could the digipak be distributed? Traditionally in shops / onlinebenefits? Drawbacks? As a digital download? Benefits? Drawbacks?

EVALUATION ACTIVITY 3
You could record a directors commentary where you explain how your
promo appeals to your audience and addresses their expectations.You should include the following:
How your opening links to other similar promos (and specific genres
of promo) in order to attract the audience.
How you used genre conventions camerawork, editing, mise-en-
scene, narrative / performance.
You should also record your findings from your audiences response to
the completed production (all three texts). What did they like? Dislike?Did they meet their expectations? Ensure that you comment on their
feedback.
Remember the ancillaries as well!
