• Neoclassical style was simple & formal

• Initially a reaction against the excesses of the preceding Rococo style
• Draw parallelisms between the times of the Roman Republic and the struggle for liberty in France • Showing through the simplicity of the art the need of change and
liberty in France, and through the heroism how the change needed to occur.
