Founded by a Methodist elder named John M. Young in 1863, Lancasters southern border had existed as a rutted trail for moving people, wagons, oxen and cat-tle. Young dubbed it Locust Street, and when the vil-lage was redrawn as the capital city, the street was renamed, purely as a matter of alphabetical chance, as O Street. O Street became the center of Lincoln and the heart of a new commercial district. It divides the city on any Lincoln map. For all intents and purposes, O Street is Lincolns main street. Little, if anything, remains today of O Streets pio-neer origins. But a weathered brass plaque at Sandys Bar on the corner of 14th and O streets in downtown Lincoln marks the site where a log cabin was built in 1864 by Luke Lavender. Local legend holds that this was the communitys first building, though some his-torians argue that the first might actually have been built by postmaster Jacob Dawson, near what is now 7th and O streets. That historical debate notwithstanding, it is impossi-ble to argue O Streets place in history. The people of Lincoln today, the commuters and shoppers and tour-ists and residents, are, quite literally, following in the footsteps of the first rugged visionaries who gazed upon a rolling stretch of unspoiled, untamed prairie. Linda Hubka grew up in Lincoln and never left. The human resources director for Whitehead Oil, which operates 21 convenience stores in the Cornhusker State, remembers her childhood among the towering businesses flanking O Street. Myself, my family and friends, we have fond memories of Brandeis and the other department stores that used to be downtown, Hubka said. Families would go from store to store shopping; wed see our friends there. Those were sweet, simple innocent times. Somewhere along the way, down-town died. But now its coming back. Its evolving and moving up. O Street is a liv-ing, breathing thing, and new life is being put into these old buildings.

THE JOURNEY of perhaps the worlds longest straight main street begins with a single letter. O. O Street is the spine of our city of Lincoln, said Jill Dolberg of the Nebraska State Historical Society. Its in a constant state of development and it rein-carnates itself over and over. Fortieth and O Street is unrecognizable from when I grew up here. There used to be Coolcrest Miniature Golf, with all kinds of obstacles, roaring dragons, and rockets blasting off. The roller skating rink is still there. Before my living memory there was Ken Eddys Drive Inn, a totally American Graffiti or Happy Days kind of place, she continued. Now theres Target, Super Saver and Hy-Vee. O Street reminds me of Rome and Constantinople. Were building upon the ashes of what was there before. After achieving statehood in 1867, the new Nebraska State Legislature directed Gov. David Butler, Secre-tary of State Thomas Kennard and State Auditor John Gillespie to choose a site for a new state capital. After exploring the western frontier of what was thought to be uninhabitable land, they settled on a fledgling village with a handful of people and even fewer buildings. It was called Lancaster. Lancasters most remarkable feature then was the salt deposits that drew such entrepreneurs as J. Ster-ling Morton, famous for tree planting and, eventual-ly, the Morton Salt Company. Lancasters salt indus-try ultimately dissolved, and the village of salt-of-the-earth types crystallized into a new capital city renamed for the 16th president.

    Golf Is Cool

S peaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) was seated between Jay Haas and his son Bill at The First Tee Congres-sional Breakfast on National Golf Day in April. U.S. Rep. James E. Clyburn (D-S.C.) drew the short straw and had me at his table. Both congressmen spoke to about 100 assembled golf-industry leaders who were in Washington to lobby -- a bad word, I know -- for the game, but it was nice to hear the leadership of both parties agreeing on something. Clyburn said he was introduced to the sport by his father, an avid baseball player who inexplicably gave him a golf club for Christmas one year. "I grew up playing golf and baseball," he said. In 1971, when he went to work for South Carolina Gov. John West, he found himself at a staff retreat where the governor wanted to play golf and Clyburn was the only golfer on the staff. Their rounds together over the years built such a close relationship that West's widow, Lois, sent him his desk when Clyburn was elected majority whip. "All that grew out of golf," he said. Clyburn's other great golf experience came through his grandson, A.C. Reid, now 17, who was born prematurely and had three operations before he was 10 pounds. He grew up to love football but was physically better suited to golf. "I took him with me to the course, and he became a very good golfer," Clyburn said proudly. "He's got a 360-degree swing. One of my happiest days was spent playing in a pro-am with him and Davis Love III." It's at this point that Clyburn turned spokesman for The First Tee. "Golf to me," he said, "learned properly and practiced appropriately, teaches more about life than any other sport. It teaches honesty, integrity, discipline. You can't blame anyone else -- it's all about you against the elements." The First Tee is sometimes criticized by golf wonks for not sufficiently "growing the game." The First Tee isn't just about increasing participation, but it annually gives golf lessons to 2 million young people -- 40 percent of whom are minorities -- at more than 700 courses, 4,700 elementary schools and 120 military bases. In a 2012 drive to reach 10 million kids, $72.8 million had been

raised by mid-year toward a $100 million goal. That kind of funding wouldn't happen for "merely" a junior or minority golf initiative -- the genius of The First Tee is that it promotes the life skills Rep. Clyburn recognizes as unique about golf. The First Tee was only part of the message the golf industry brought to Washington: Golf contributes $76 billion and 2 million jobs to the American

economy, which makes it a bigger job creator than the motion-picture, publishing and telecommunications industries. We fight this image of the game as an elitist and exclu-sionary sport, but nine out of 10 golfers don't belong to a private club, 85 percent of golf is played at public cours-es, and the average round costs just $25. Golf raises more money for charity than all other sports combined. The PGA Tour efforts contribute about $120 million, but that represents only 3 percent of the annual $3.5 billion of golf fundraising for good causes. Golf courses are great stewards of the environment, acting as leaders in their community for practicing water conservation, limiting chemical use and providing wild-life habitats. My favorite statistic I heard that day: Golf courses are 10 degrees lower in temperature than sur-rounding urban environments. What do you know -- golf is cool. Our efforts to get equitable treatment continue in Congress. Ever since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the small businesses of golf have been excluded from disaster relief as legislation lumped us in with massage parlors and casinos as not being worthy of federal funding. "We don't want to be given special treatment compared to other industries; we just want to play from the same set of tees," PGA of America CEO Joe Steranka said. If you're a golfer, blue or red, we need you to help spread this message. And maybe the best way you can do it -- like Jim Clyburn -- is to pass the game along and intro-duce a friend or family member to the life skills of golf. Click HERE to read more.

E M P LOY M E N T In any athletic endeavor you try, (name any sport), what separates good from great is execution! Be-

ing able to take it from the driving range, practice field, etc., is what matters, isnt it? Execution truly

is where the rubber meets the road!!

Player Development execution is the fifth step in what I refer to as the Circle of Life in the Player De-

velopment action steps. How you execute your Player Development programs has a direct bearing on

the retention of golfers at your facility. This next statement, made by our current PGA of America Vice

President, Ted Bishop, rings true. He said, It may be more important to teach people how to have fun:

the golf skills will follow. Are you making sure the fun meter dial is part of the training of your

    staff?

If you are hiring or have staff in place for instructing your Player Development programs, make sure

you realize that you or your instructors have the single greatest impact on whether the student is retained

as a golfer. Does your staff know what your goals are? Are they on board with your objectives? Can

they execute? Also, does your owner, board, etc., know what you are doing regarding your Player De-

velopment programs? The business justification of these programs is that you will be bringing new cus-

tomers to your employer. At the end of the day, the number of golfers you develop and retain and the

revenue you generate will determine the success of your programs. A definite sign of someone who can

    execute!

I have always maintained in my career that the relationships you develop within our industry are the

most meaningful part. The ability you have as their instructor/teacher cannot be overstated. A common

adage in a relationship building approach is: Consumer- Customer- Client-Partner (in that order). This

way of thinking will pay dividends and is simply a strategic process to grow your business. Sure, it takes

some effort to develop and nurture those relationships, but the reward will be they will come to you as

their primary contact for everything golf. This is just another way to increase your value to your em-

ployer. How are you doing this summer with your Player Development programs- have you executed?

    Mizuno/Club Car Pro - 3 Am | The Country Club of Lincoln | July 2, 2012

White Leads Charge at Country Club of Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. The Mizuno/Club Car Pro 3 Am at The Country Club of Lincoln fea-tured a shoot out featuring a full field of Nebraska Section PGA Professionals. Jim White, PGA MP, West Nine and Learning Center capped off a stellar performance bird-ing #16 and #17 to finish at six under-par 66 edging out Jon Petersen, PGA, Miracle Hill Golf and Tennis and Raul Cortes de la Riva of York Country Club who finished at five under-par 67. White, 2011 Senior Player of the Year, hit 17 greens in regulation which led to seven bird-ies and one bogey on the day. Petersen fin-ished strong birding six out of his final 10 holes. Cortes got off to a hot start shooting a five under-par 31 on the front nine but couldnt track down White and finished with an even par 36 on the final nine holes. White captured the professional division, senior division and also led his team to finishing on top of the team division. Tiffany White, Charlie Huff and Susie Dinkelman teamed up with White and finished at 22 under-par in the two net format. Twenty-two under par was good enough for a one shot victory over the team led by Jon Petersen, PGA, Dick Boyer, Don Kroupa and Bill Richards. Raul Cortes finished at top of the assistants division. The Club Car/Mizuno Pro-3AM also marked the final event of the Omaha Steaks Holes of the week. Shane Zywiec, PGA topped Jim White, PGA MP in a tie-breaker to win the inaugural Omaha Steaks Holes of the Week. Both Zywiec and White finished at six under-par in the season long contest. The Nebraska PGA would like to thank Don Brudny of Club Car, Jeremy Galbreth of Mizuno, Vinnie Krikac of State Farm Insurance Agency and Omaha Steaks for their support of this tournament.

Siouxland Golf Charities Pro - 3 Am | Whispering Creek | Sioux City, IA

Vermeer Finishes on Top at Siouxland Golf Charities Pro-AM

Sioux City, Iowa Four birdies and no bogies propelled, Ryan Vermeer, Teaching Professional at Oak Hills Country Club to a four under-par 68 at Whispering Creek Golf Club. Vermeer had one birdie on his card on the front nine and finished his final nine holes with birdies on holes #10, 13, 14, and 18. Ryan Norman, PGA, Teaching Professional from GolfTEC finished second at two under-par 70 with Jon Petersen, PGA Teaching Professional from Miracle Hills Golf & Tennis and Raul Cortes de la Riva finishing tied for third at one under-par 71. The team competition came down to the final few holes for the team of Scott Harmelink, PGA Head Professional

at Green Valley Golf Course and his amateur partners, M.L. Peterson, Todd Sapp and Ron Van Buskirk finish-ing at 15-under par 129 and

in a tie for first place. Tom Johnson of Champions Run and his amateur partners Cody Gorsett, Karen Meyer and Nancy Hueseth also finished at 15 under-par and tied for first in the team division. The event was highlighted by a PGA of America/USGA campaign called, TEE IT FORWARD which encourages golfers to play from tees best suited to their game and abilities. By playing from the forward tees, amateur golfers had the chance to play the course at the same relative distance as a touring professional would over 18 holes. The playing field is leveled by giving golfers the opportunity to play from distances that are properly aligned with their abilities. By shortening the course we gave the amateur golfers the chance to hit less club into the green which allowed for a few more birdies and less time spent on the golf course, said David Honnens, PGA Executive Director Nebraska PGA. This event also celebrated its 10th Anniversary which has raised over $115,000 to local Siouxland Charities that benefit the Sioux City community.

This pathway to membership blends the PGA PGM Program courses and requirements with a bachelors degree offered at an accredited PGA Golf Management University. Students in the university program will cover the same course material and must complete the same requirements such as work experience activities and the Playing Ability Test as PGA apprentices. However, they will do so in addition to their regular college course load. Click here to obtain specific information about the PGA Golf Management University Program and the individual universities.
