Bethel recently routed St. Scholastica at the Mall of America field last week, 70-13. The Royals wracked up more than 500 yards and held the Saints to less than 200 total yards on the day. Caretakers: Bethel has done an exceptional job taking care of the football this season, as the Royals have a turnover margin of plus-20 after eleven games played. BU’s turnover margin ranks No. 5 nationwide. Wabash leads the country with a turnover margin of plus-2.4 turnovers per game. Bethel’s 31 forced turnovers ranks No. 9 among all NCAA Division III institutions. Conference MVP: Quarterback Erik Peterson was recently announced as the Jim Christopher- son MIAC Most Valuable Player. After last week’s game against CSS, Peterson broke Bethel’s single season record for yards thrown (2,795) and is six completions away from the single-season record at BU for completions. On the season, Peterson is 206-of-293 (70.3 percent) with 23 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Sensational staff: In addition to Erik Peterson receiving the MIAC MVP award and 23 other players earning recognition, head coach Steve Johnson and his staff received the John Gagliardi MIAC Football Coach of the Year. For Johnson, who is in his 25th season with the Royals, it was his fifth conference award. He and the Bethel staff have led BU to eight postseason appearances in the last 14 years, including three in the last four. Playoff picture: The Royals postseason berth in 2013 was the eighth trip to the NCAA Divi- sion III Championships since 2000. Meanwhile, its MIAC Championship was the fifth title won outright or shared in the same time. Bethel has totalled an 8-7 record in the playoffs, including last week’s win over St. Scholastica. BU has gone 8-3 since 2007 with two West Region Championships. The Wartburg file: The Knights enter Satur- day’s game with an 9-2 record, including a 6-1 mark in loop play. Wartburg’s only loss against a WIAC opponent was against Coe College on No- vember 2, however, the Knight’s other loss was against Bethel in the second week of the 2013 campagin. The series: Saturday’s game between Wartburg and Bethel will be the second meeting this season and the fifth overall. The Royals and Knights have met three times in the playoffs. BU owns a 2-1 re- cord over Wartburg in the postseason and is 3-1 overall, including wins in the last three matchups. Bulldozing bunch: The Knights utilized a dynamic ground game in last week’s 41-7 vic- tory over Illinois Wesleyan University, as Wartburg rushed for 274 yards. Brandon Domeyer led the Knights’ rushing attack with 161 yards on 34 car- ries and three touchdowns—averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Domeyer has wracked up 834 yards on the ground this year on 200 attempts—aver- aging 4.2 yards per rushing attempt. Additionally, sophomore has 10 touchdowns. Ball hawks: Head coach Rick Willis and the Wartburg College football team forced seven turn- overs against the Titans last week in Bloomington, Ill. The Knights recorded four total interceptions against Illinois Wesleyan, which included a pick in the final three IWU possessions. Meanwhile, Wart- burg stripped the Titans five times and recovered three fumbles. Seven different defenders created a turnover for the Knights Saturday. Postseason punch: 2013 marks the 10th NCAA Division III Playoff appearance for Wartburg College, who has accumulated a 5-9 record in the postseason. This is the seventh trip to the DIII Championships under Rick Willis’s guidance and first since 2010. The Knights’ IIAC Championship in 2013 was the sixth that they have won outright or shared since 2002. Wartburg’s best playoff run was in 2008, when they lost in the quarterfinals. OFFENSE POS. NO.
