The 2019 season has come down to 48 minutes of

football for Cleveland Heights.

With a 52-8 win over visiting Shaw on Senior Night

on Oct. 25, the Tigers have improved to 8-1 and 5-0

in the LEL.

A showdown with Maple Heights in Week 10 has not

only the LEL championship on the line, but could

also determine the playoff fate of Heights.

The Tigers are currently in the top 8 in Division I,

Region 1, but a loss to the Mustangs could knock

them out of the postseason.

“The Shaw game was an emotional night and win for

our seniors because that is the last game they will

play in our home stadium and it was senior night.

The guys have been great all season, but our goal

from the outset was to win the LEL championship

and get in the playoffs. It looks like we will have the

opportunity to do both next week against Maple

Heights,” Heights coach Mac Stephens said.

Bay Harvey ran for a pair of early TDs, Jiovonny

Holmes blocked two punts and Ju’Ruon Hardin

caught two touchdowns in the win.

Diego Bremer took a screen to the end zone, Justin

Wodtly scored on a fumble return and Elijah Fowlkes

scored as well for the Tigers.

“I was very pleased with the play of reciever Ju’Ruon

Hardin who caught 3 passes for 55 yards and scored

2 touchdowns. He has been a big-play target all

season,” Stephens said.

“Defensively, Jaylen Davis is starting to come into his

own as a guy who can get pressure on quarterbacks

and create havoc on the defensive front which has

been huge in helping us to have the number 16th-

ranked defense in all of D-I for the state of Ohio.”

Garfield Heights and Shaker Heights will join an expanding Lake Erie League over the next 12-month period.

Shaker Heights Red Raiders will exit the Greater Cleveland Conference and join the LEL beginning in August 2020. Garfield Heights

rejoins the LEL after leaving the league more than a decade ago. The Bulldogs have played most recently as an independent, and will

join the new 8-team LEL halfway through the 2019-2020 school year.

Both Garfield Heights and Shaker Heights were previously LEL members, with Garfield departing in 2007 and Shaker in 2012. Both

joined the Northeast Ohio Conference, which disbanded by 2015 with eight of those members forming the GCC.
