Even back in 1958, the company’s farsighted founder recognised the growing burden on the environment:

“Time is increasingly taking its toll on us. Unhealthy, high-stress work practices, polluted water, and air contaminated with dust, gases, acids and radioactivity, which may become an important issue in the future, are extremely harmful factors that affect our skin to some degree or another. Our food must also be taken into account, contaminated as it is by pesticides, mineral fertilizers, preservatives and other substances.”

The unique natural cycle of the Speick plant

Speick Natural Cosmetics – Vision and FascinationOur family business was founded more than 90 years ago. Now in its third generation, the company is managed by Wikhart Teuffel, the grandson of our founder, Walter Rau.

But let’s take a look back to the year that the company was founded. In 1928, anthroposophist Walter Rau established “Fein-seifenwerk WALTER RAU” (The “WALTER RAU Fine Soap Works”), a move which was considered quite a gamble in the midst of a crisis-shaken economy. As the offspring of the Stuttgart-based family business “Vereinigte Seifenfabriken” (“United Soap Facto-ries”), Rau was set on continuing the soap-making tradition of his parents. But this was not enough – he dreamed of manufacturing more than just the curd soap that was popular for washing clothes in those days. That was when Rau hit upon the idea of a gentle, natural soap for body care.

This idea was teamed with a special fascination – Rau was passionate about the unique properties of the Speick plant, (Lat. Valeriana celtica), which had been prized for centuries. From this idea and fascination emerged a unique product: Speick soap. This natural, extra-mild soap was a cosmetic revolution – for body care, as opposed to washing.

“Being human and continuing to develop”

For Wikhart Teuffel, these values have always been important in employee development. The founder’s grandson can clearly see how vital it is that “tradition has a future” through the Carinthian Alpine farming families in Austria, who harvest the wild-growing Speick plant. The family farm has always been passed down to the next generation, along with the Speick harvest – done by hand. Approximately 1800 metres above sea level, high up in the Nock Mountains, the Speick harvest represents an important source of income for these families. Not only that, but the partnership between the Speick alpine farmers and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Nock Mountains shows how values can be actively lived. Employees of our family business who visited the alpine farmers harvesting the Speick plant left with an awareness of the finite nature of natural resources, such as it is in the alpine ecosystem of the Carinthian Nock Mountains, and of how “being human” is inextricably linked to the natural universe.

On the Speick TrailThe unique cultural history of a rediscovered medicinal plant

Speick is known in botanical circles as Valerina celtica. Its Latin name is a piece of pure cultural history – “Valere” is Latin for “stay healthy”, and “Celtica” stands for its Celtic background, today the alpine Nock Mountains in Carinthia, Austria.

Speick was previously known as Spica celtica. The medicinal plant’s rootstock is reminiscent of an ear of grain, and so it was christened Spica, from the Latin term. Over the course of centuries of the plant’s history, Spica gradu-ally became Speick.

To find it, you must first climb many meters in altitude, leaving the tree line of the Carin-thian Alps well behind. Upwards of 1,800m you will find what you’re looking for in theprotected UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Nock Mountains, where Speick accumulates its unique strength.

Valuable Speick oil has been carefully ex-tracted from the plant’s roots for thousands of years.

In 500 BC in Ancient Egypt, Speick was used to perfume baths, after which the valuable oil was used for skin care. For centuries, several tonnes of Speick were exported on a daily basis all over the world via Venice.

In the 10th century, the plant was already being used for medicinal purposes. The famous doctor Galen cured Emperor Marc Aurel’s stomach problems with Speick. In the meantime, the plant became worth its weight in gold and was later subject to high taxes. Up until the beginning of the 20th century, Speick was exported to Turkey, Syria, Morocco and Sudan. Then in 1936, it was threatened with extinction and placed under protection. With that, Speick promptly lost its economic importance and sank into oblivion.

Concentrated, all-natural algae extract

The concentrated algae extract regulates the skin balance using algae from Brittany. The proteins, minerals and vitamins contai-ned in the algae energise the skin cells. They protect against harmful environmental fac-tors and free radicals, and revitalise the skin.

Unique Speick extract

Every Speick product contains the valuab-le extract of the high alpine Speick plant. Carinthian farmers harvest the plant for us from biologically regulated wild harvesting. The alpine soil provides the Speick plant with special nutrients, and the unique properties of the Speick extract are released through its precious oil, which is obtained by careful extraction.

These accolades build trust and confidence for our business partners and customers, and are confirmation of our sustainable stand-ards. Our brand awareness, for example, has grown as a result of receiving the award from the German Federal Government, particularly among the value-driven buying public.

For me, our application for these awards was less about the fame and glory, and far more about raising awareness among our employ-ees. They were closely involved with the application process with everyone working together to identify what is sustainable at our places of work. In this way our workforce became more motivated thanks to their new understanding of our holistic corporate governance. Of course, we‘re delighted about how the awards have positively affected our brand image in the public eye as well, espe-cially as we are such a small company.

As a result of these accolades we have also been able to expand our networks, enabling us to get involved in a variety of committees for more sustainability in business.

From late spring right through to autumn, Speick walking tours are offered in the beautiful Carinthian Nock Mountain region, where one can enjoy an aromatic walking experience in the Speick plant’s natural habitat. The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Nock Mountains and the Bad Kleinkirchheim Tourism association invite you on a short Speick walk, or a long Speick hike, visiting selected huts in the region. Here you can experience pure relaxation and enjoyment as the Speick plant’s aromatic perfume wafts over alpine meadows, caressing body and mind in the mild autumn weather.

A Unique Conservation ProjectSpeick products are the only products in the world to contain the unique Speick extract. Since 2003, the Speick plant is one of the few European plants to be certified as being harvested according to biologically regulated wild harvesting guidelines. Depending on the product, valuable Speick extract is combined with a variety of other ingredients. All Speick products contain Speick extract, and we are the exclusive worldwide manufacturer.

Speick is still harvested by hand, as it has been for centuries. For the alpine farming families with harvesting licenses, the Speick harvest is an important additional source of income in what is otherwise a frugal alpine existence.
