National History Day Project Overview
Description: This year, the eighth grade will once again participate in National History Day. Every student will research a topic, convert that research into notecards, and then create a presentation. You may choose your topic (as long as it follows the theme below) and what kind of presentation you would like to do. This project will take place over the course of the 2nd quarter, and will be a major part of your 2nd quarter grade. We will spend some time in the Library Media Center, some in class, and you will also be required to spend time on your own researching and working on your presentation. Mid-late December and early January will be spent formulating a topic, researching it, and then making notecards. In January, you will use the information from these notecards to create your presentation.
➤Topic: (you choose) You are free to choose any topic that relates to American History and the National History Day Theme:
“Exploration, Encounter & Exchange in History” Your project must have a clear thesis/claim that ties into the theme, so be sure to choose a topic that will fit the theme.
➤Presentation Categories: (you choose one)
1. Documentary (film/video presentation) 2. Museum Exhibit (poster, model, diorama) 3. Research Paper 4. Live Performance 5. Web Site (using NHD’s Weebly access)
➤Individual/Group Projects: (you choose) Unless you are writing a paper, you may work on your own or in a group of no more than THREE students in your class. Papers must be done individually. If you choose to be in a group, make sure that you carefully think over who you would like to work with as this is an in-depth project that requires you to work very closely with your group members, in and out of school.
In addition to the project, you will be graded on your Notecards, Bibliography and an Outline in which you will map out what your presentation will look like.

Process Paper and Bibliography
________________________________________________________________________ PROCESS PAPER “A process paper is a description of no more than 500 words explaining how you conducted your research and created your entry. The process paper must include four sections that explain: - how you chose your topic - how you conducted your research - how you selected your presentation category and created your project - how your project relates to the NHD theme” Samples can be viewed at www.nhd.org on the “Creating an Entry” page in the contest section. ________________________________________________________________________ ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY An annotated bibliography is required for all categories. List only those sources that contributed to the development of your entry, sources that provided usable information or new perspectives in preparing your entry. Sources of visual materials and oral interviews must be included. The annotations for each source must explain how you used the source and how it helped you understand your topic. Annotations of websites should describe who sponsors the site. Use the MLA citation style. This is the default on your NoodleBib. After each citation, explain how the source was used and how it helped you understand your topic in 1-3 sentences. For example: Bates, Daisy. The Long Shadow of Little Rock. 1st ed. New York: David McKay Co. Inc., 1962. Daisy Bates was the president of the Arkansas NAACP and the one who met and listened to the students each day. This first-hand account was very important to my paper because it made me more aware of the feelings of the people involved.
