    In the sentences where the words run andlightare used as noun, notice that thewords are preceded bythe anda. the anda are callednoun markers or articles. They signalnouns.

    The, a, andan are the most commonly used noun markers.

    A andan are calledindefinite noun markers because they refer to

    anything, anyone, anywhere. They are used only with singular count nouns.

    a is used before a word that starts with a consonant while an is used before a wordthat starts with a vowel.

    The, on the other hand, is called a definite noun markerbecause it refers to a specific

    person, place, or thing. It is used with nouns that are clearly identified.
