What is a Noun?

A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea.

EX: The boy went to the park.

Common Noun

A Common Noun is any person, place, thing, or idea.

EX: Jenna went to the store.

Proper Noun

Proper Nouns are specific people, places, things, or ideas. Proper nouns are always capitalized.

EX: Charles Darwin loved Blackjack Pizza.

Plural Nouns

Plural Nouns mean that there are more than one noun. ● We usually add an “S” or an “ES” to make

nouns plural.

EX: The dogs liked to run in the park.

Possessive Nouns

Possessive Nouns belong to someone. ● Usually, we add an apostrophe ( ‘ ) and an

“S” to make it possessive.

EX: John’s cat loved to eat lasagna.

What if it’s plural AND possessive?

If it is both plural and possessive, we put the apostrophe AFTER the s.

EX: The girls’ dresses were ugly.

Collective Noun

Collective Nouns name groups of people or things as one unit.

EX: My family is insane.

Concrete Nouns are people or things that can be perceived with our senses.● Sight, taste, touch, smell, hear

EX: Lincoln’s hat was filled with water.

Abstract Nouns

Abstract Nouns are used to name ideas, feelings, qualities, or characteristics that we can NOT perceive.

EX:Jane never got over her shyness.

Count vs. Non Count Nouns

A noun is a person, place, thing or idea. You can add a number before and an s behind a count noun and it will still make sense and be grammatically correct.

EX: I have two bags.

Non count nouns only exist in their singular form.

EX: I have some baggage to get.

Pronoun

Antecedent

The antecedent is the noun that the pronoun is filling in for.

EX: Roberto thought that he would win the race.

Roberto is the antecedent and he is the pronoun.
