“Community college students in Florida will soon be able to decide to skip remediation and enroll directly in credit-bearing courses, even if college advisers or placement tests say they have remedial needs. And recent high school graduates in the state won’t even need to take placement tests, because they will be deemed college-ready by holding a high school diploma.”

VISION STATEMENT: By fall 2017, Texas will significantly improve the success of underprepared students by addressing their individualized needs through reliable diagnostic assessment, comprehensive support services, and non-traditional interventions, to include modular, mainstreaming, non-course competency-based, technologically-based, and integrated instructional models.

Why So Much Focus on Developmental Education?

• Policy-makers perceive DE as a symptom of a larger educational system failure. Fixing the educational system is an economic imperative. • 20 years ago, the U.S. was ranked highest in the

world for the percentage of adults with college degrees. Now, we are tied for 10th. • By 2018, 62% of all jobs will require a college

credential, and more than 1/2 of those will require a bachelor’s degree.

BUT…

Only 42% of U.S. adults aged 25-34 hold a post-secondary credential.

According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (www.oecd.org)

Developmental Education Bridges the Access and the Completion Agendas.

• We will never reach the completion goals if we reduce access.

• But can we find shorter or more effective bridges between access and completion?
