The Great Gatsby is a novel by American writer Francis Scott Fitzgerald. The novel was published on April 10, 1925

«The Great Gatsby» was staged on Broadway and filmed in Hollywood soon after the release. But the novel was not popular during the author's life with sales of less than 24 000 copies.

The novel is a typical representative of the so-called «Century of Jazz» in American literature. It was completed and published by Fitzgerald in Paris, where he lived during his travelling around Europe

There is an opinion that Fitzgerald called the main hero Great Gatsby because in this way he wanted to show his ironic attitude to the hero: on the one hand, Gatsby – a man evidently outstanding, with great ability and indomitable vitality, but on the other hand, he wasted himself in pursuit of false goals, and frivolousness and depraved women.
