STANDING RULES 2012 – 2013 1. Teachers must be members in good standing of MTAC and Glendale Branch and abide by their rules to

present students on any program.

2. Teachers entering students in any Branch program or activity must attend the performance or activity and be available to help and work. Should they be unable to work, they will be required to pay a fee of $5.00 per student, up to $50 maximum.

3. Teachers may not accompany their own students in competitive events.

4. Contributory members may not enter students in the Glendale Memorial Music Scholarship audition or any competitive festival.

5. Students who have won in a competitive event in a previous year are not eligible to win again in the same event with the same repertoire.

6. Teachers may present three of their best students in the Spring Concert. Students who appear at the Spring Concert in an ensemble may not also play a solo.

7. Students may not compete against themselves in any competitive event.

8. Certificate of Merit Branch Honors requirements are: CM Level III and above; all pieces memorized; “Excellent” or “Good” in Repertoire, Sight reading and Technique; receives “5-“ or higher in Branch Honors’ rating, and passes the theory exam.

9. The program chair will stop students whose performance exceeds the time limit.

10. Teachers may only enter students in any Branch event for whom they serve as the primary teacher. The primary teacher is one who meets with the student on a regular basis and provides the majority of instruction.

11. Photocopied music will not be allowed except to facilitate page turns. This applies to performers, accompanists, and music given to judges.

MEMORIZATION All students appearing on any program must perform from memory.

EXCEPTION: optional memorization for orchestral instruments, ensembles and music-optional workshops. All students appearing in the Branch Scholarship Auditions, Spring Concert, and ALL other festivals must perform from memory.

REPERTOIRE Repertoire for all programs must be originally written by the composer. Arrangements, transcriptions, or simplifications are not acceptable. Exception: Transcriptions are acceptable for instruments other than keyboard.

STUDENT APPLICATION PROCEDURES FOR GLENDALE BRANCH PROGRAMS

1. All entry applications need to be completely filled out and must be received by the postmark

deadline to avoid any late fee.

2. Late entries will be accepted if delivered in person and no later than (2) two days after the postmark deadline. A teacher will be assessed a $5.00 late fee for each late entry up to a maximum of $25.00. (Example: If the postmark deadline is the 15th of the month, entries may be hand delivered and will be accepted through the 17th of the month if accompanied by the late fee of $5.00 per entry.)

3. Absolutely no entries will be accepted by phone.

4. Fees must be sent with the student applications to the proper chair along with a stamped self-addressed envelope in which the Chair may return the recital schedule.

5. Checks should be made payable to “MTAC Glendale Branch” for all events and must be signed by the teacher. Checks from students or parents are not acceptable. All entries are non-refundable.

6. Application forms can be downloaded from the branch website at www.glendalemtac.org.

FEES AND DUES All annual dues, both Branch and State, are due upon receipt of invoice and are to be paid directly to the State Office. If dues are not postmarked to the State Office on or before July 31st, membership is forfeited. Reinstatement fee is $30. (Please note: Members must be reinstated by July 31st or their students cannot participate in Certificate of Merit.) Dues must be paid by July 1 for member’s name to appear in the current State Directory. 1. Branch dues are $30 for Active Teachers, $20 for Provisional Teachers and Business Affiliate and

$15.00 for Student Teachers and Contributory members. There is a $15 delinquency fee after July 1 for Contributory and Subscriber members.

2. State dues are $96 for Active, Provisional, $105 for Business Affiliate and $48 for Student. 3. Dues will be waived for a member who has reached age 80 and has been an active member in good

standing for at least ten (10) years. 4. An active teacher member upon reaching the age of 70 may thereafter be allowed to pay half State

dues. New member dues paid on or before March 1 will apply to the preceding year; dues paid after that date may be credited to the new fiscal year, August 1, at the discretion of the applicant. New members will pay a non refundable $15.00 Branch application fee (student members exempted.) A Branch surcharge of $9.00 per student will be assessed for Certificate of Merit.

NOVEMBER, 2012 November 1 – 30: Practicing for Scholarship During the month of November, students will be practicing and raising money for Glendale’s Memorial Music Scholarship Foundation. Money will be raised when friends and family members become sponsors. Sponsors donate to the scholarship fund based on the number of hours a student promises to practice. Scholarships will be given at Awards Evening to 11th and 12th grade students who are winners of the 2013 Glendale Branch Scholarship Auditions. A student who collects at least $30.00 will receive a 4” column trophy topped by Winged Victory. Students may also work towards larger trophies by collecting additional funds for the Scholarship Foundation. The trophies will have personalized nameplates plus year and name of the event. (Nameplates will be sent in December.) This is a recital program designed to stimulate interest in music written in the contemporary idiom. This is an adjudicated event with written evaluations. Music on this program is limited to living composers or those who have died since 1962. Music by composers who died before 1962 is not eligible for this program. (Exception: Bartok, Gershwin) Please check with the Chair if you have questions about the pieces and/or composer’s eligibility. Multiple pieces can be included as long as they belong to the same opus and are within the time limit*. Teachers may enter as many of their students as are interested. The M2A study course and evaluation includes performance, technique, sightreading and theory requirements for all instruments. Outside, professional evaluations, hired by Glendale Branch, will conduct the evaluations in private homes. Registration period is from January 1, 2013 – February 1, 2013. Student registration and payment of fees must be complete by postmark deadline of February 1, 2013. Late registrations will be accepted with a postmark deadline date of March 1, 2013 with payment of a $10.00 per student late fee. THERE ARE NO REFUNDS.

1. Evaluation schedule and evaluation forms will be sent by April 1, 2013. 2. Students bring their music, evaluation form and theory material with them on

evaluation day. 3. Since there is a free choice of repertoire, student’s level is determined by the theory

Repertoire requirements: Applicants must present two memorized selections, one from each of the following two categories (total audition time not to exceed 15 minutes):

concerto. Popular music is not acceptable. Cash awards will be presented at Awards Evening, which will feature performances by the

Scholarship winners. The awards are made possible by fund-raising for and donations to our Branch Scholarship Foundation. Winners who do not attend this program forfeit their cash award. Application Requirements: 1. Must be in the 11th or 12th grade. 2. Must have studied with a Glendale Branch MTAC member since Jan. 1, 2012 and must be

recommended by their teacher. Verification may be requested. Include names of previous teachers and dates of study.

4. Must submit school transcripts verifying they have been in American Schools since the 9th grade.

5. Must agree, if chosen a winner, to perform Awards Evening, May 18, at the First United Methodist Church of Glendale in order to receive their awards. Winners who do not attend this program forfeit their cash awards. This includes recipients of encouragement awards. ♦ An 11th grade student who wins first place will not be eligible to compete the following

Up to 35% of those performing compositions by J.S. Bach may be selected to perform at the Regional Festival. Selections from the Anna Magdalena Notebook are eligible only for the Branch Festival. Those appearing at the Regional Festival, performing appropriate repertoire, are eligible to compete in the Complete Works Audition. This is an adjudicated event.

Participating students will receive written evaluations from the judges.

Vocalists, wind and string players will compete in their own All Southern California Junior Bach Festival. Please note: Vocalists, wind and string players who would like to perform music by Baroque composers other than J.S. Bach may play on the local Glendale Branch Festival. Students may present only one selection. All performances must be memorized with the exception of flute and ensemble works with two or more equal parts. Judges’ decisions are final. Time limit: 5 minutes. The Regional Festival will be an adjudicated event. 45% of those performing may be chosen to receive Regional Awards. Only Regional winners are eligible to perform in the Complete Works Audition providing the repertoire is from the Complete Works’ List. The Spring Festival is open to THREE STUDENTS PER TEACHER. Ensembles may appear on this program. Any student appearing in an ensemble or concerto may not also appear as a soloist. Teachers may submit more than 1 concerto applicant. Concerti are accepted, under the time limit of 13 minutes. All solos and concerti must be memorized. Concerto movement must supply their own accompanist. This program is a formal presentation and is designed to project the highest standards of the MTAC to community. Students are encouraged to dress appropriately and to invite their family and friends. Composers Today and Improvisation students will perform their original compositions as part of the program.
