From our gala chairs Dear

FriendsWe invite you to join us on april 11, 2016,

when we will celebrate the good works of the brooklyn conservatory of music (bkcm) at our music moves 2016 gala.

For more than 100 years BKCM has opened the wide world of music to our many and diverse communities, touching the lives of thousands who have wanted to

master an instrument, sing in a choir, or experience the many benefits of music.

Our mission to transform lives and enrich our communities by removing the barriers that hinder anyone from learning and experiencing music is evident on students’

faces as they walk in the door for their weekly lesson and in the strides music therapy participants make in their interpersonal relationships. It shines through in

the pride of students performing their first band concert and in the vibrancy of senior citizens singing in a choir. It forges friendships between former strangers.

Our programs mark the whole of the human experience, showcases what makes us human and what binds our communities together. Your support of our

Music Moves 2016 Gala will provide valuable resources for the coming year in providing free music lessons to more than 4,500 underserved music students

and subsidized music therapy to more than 1,100 individuals with emotional, developmental and physical challenges, throughout Brooklyn and New York City.

We invite you to play your part in the continued transformation of our students and the communities in which we work by making a contribution to our 2016

Gala. Through your support we will be able to sustain our movement forward and bring the transformative powers of music to our current—and future—students

and audiences in the coming year.

Best regards,

Gala CO-ChaIrs

Music Therapy is an evidenced-based clinical discipline where music is used to effect positive change and foster creative expression in children and adults. In addition to achieving clinical goals and improving social functioning of those with special needs, people who desire to expand their lives and explore issues through creative expression are also good candidates for music therapy.

Whether working one-on-one or in a group setting, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music offers music therapy for clients to grow through the transformative experience of making music in relationship with a trained music therapist. Our credentialed music therapists play music with clients using improvisation and specific music interventions to address client needs and goals.

The Suzuki program builds on the principle that if properly trained all children can master music just as they can learn their mother tongue.

The suzuki Method is recognized worldwide as a highly effective approach for teaching

children the language of music. Generations of students have begun a lifelong journey of

musical enrichment through this approach.

The suzuki program at BKCM offers programs in violin, viola, cello, guitar, piano, and bass. the

curriculum incorporates three elements that provide the essentials needed for instrumental

music education: private lessons, theory classes, and group classes.

Parent involvement is an integral component of the suzuki approach. Parents learn and

practice alongside the child, functioning as role models and providing encouragement.

Music can lift us out of depression or move us to tears – it is a remedy, a tonic, orange juice for the ear. But for many of my neurological patients, music is even

more – it can provide access, even when no medication can, to movement, to speech, to life. For them, music is not a

luxury, but a necessity.OlIVEr saCKs
