MUSIC MAGAZINES OUTLINE

WHAT IS THE DRAW OF MUSIC MAGAZINES? Since the creation of the internet 10 years ago, all forms of media have sprung up in order to be accessible and relevant to the modern day public. As anyone anywhere can now post and produce as much as they wish, magazines have somewhat lost their edge. Any music news or articles are now instantly and easily accessible on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, none of which were made solely for Music news or information. However despite this magazines do still hold somewhat of an appeal: real fans desire to own rather than just read perhaps in a show of dedication towards their chosen band, singer or creator. The magazines I really enjoy are those that hold exclusive articles written directly to the readers of the magazine. In order to have an edge on the internet, it must be completely exclusive. And somehow owning the magazine makes te message all the more personal.

MUSIC MAGAZINE QUESTIONNAIRE ANALYSIS In order to gain a large enough variant of answers I asked twenty of my peers to fill out the questionnaire for me. Some are music enthusiasts while others have never attended a concert in their lives. In this way my questionnaire was likely to gain the most realistic and helpful feedback for my own eventual creation.

How often do you purchase a music magazine?

Weekly Monthly Only when it's my favourite artistYearly Never

From this result it is clear that the majority of those that buy music magazines are only brought in by the appeal of a favourite artist. In order to make my own magazine successful I must choose an artist which appeals to my audience and incorporate an exclusive article in order to create buyers, rather than interested parties.

How much are you willing to pay for a music magazine?

Less than £2 £3-4 More than £5

Overall it was a clear split between less than £2 and £3-4, it is obvious that my target audience are not willing to pay a higher price for a magazine. This is perhaps due to the fact that music magazine content is so easily accessible on the internet.

What attracts you most to a music magazine?

Exclusive articlesExclusive information on upcoming festivalsExclusive release dates and teasers on upcoming albums/records

This so far is the most split question of the questionnaire indicating that all exclusive articles and such appeal to those that filled out the questionnaire. For this reason in order to make a magazine successful, anything that is exclusive is essentially gold dust to a producer.

Do you prefer online or materiel content?

Online Materiel

As those that filled out my questionnaire were of my age (17) it is expected that they will lean towards online material as it is what our generation has been raised on. For this reason if teens are my target audience, then I must make sure my materiel content is only accessible in the magazine.

For the last question I will simply present the colour scheme which was most appealing. Which was that of the blue and blacks, as this was most sought after in the creation of my own magazine I will attempt to use it, however if It fails to fit with my content this may change.
