Upfrontby Emmanuel Legrand, Music & Media editor -in -chief

America has gone netcrazy! What's happening there is simplyunbelievable. The Internet economy is now worth $300 billionin the US alone, according to a recent study by the Universityof Texas.

Yet most, if not all, Internet -related companies have stillto produce revenues, let alone profits. For example, the mar-ket capitalisation of America OnLine is superior to the com-bined stock value of three of the USA's largest establishedentertainment corporations-Disney, News Corp and CBS.And despite being eyed with envy by the music and bookindustries, Cdnow and Amazon.com are still heavily in thered and have yet to deliver profits. To quote a recent coverstory of Business Week, traditional businesses are now suf-fering from "Internet Anxiety" Corporate America sees "thethreat of extinction," and therefore struggles "to embrace anew business model."

But while nobody is really in a position to speculate on the

future of the Internet, everybody wants a piece of the action, including the music industry.

Yet established companies within the industry havealways had a cautious approach to the Internet. As one pan-ellist at last week's MIDEM Americas conference pointed out:"Record companies have finally heard the wake-up call."Indeed, the number of companies involved in Internet music -related activities has reached such proportions-and somelike Liquid Audio and Audiosoft were present in Miami-thatit has become one of the fastest growing parts of the Internet. However, when asked if such companies were making money(not even profits) during a MIDEM Americas panel, theastounding silence following the ques-tion spoke volumes. A few voicesoffered an explanation. The most com-mon was: "It's not part of the businessmodel." And the most surrealistic was:"Revenues are distracting." Whatkind of business model is that?

Someday, a wake-up call shouldremind all these entrepreneurs tostart chasing the elusive dollar anddeliver the goods.

Philips moves under Decca umbrellaby Dominic Pride

LONDON - Universal Classics andJazz is moving its Philips MusicGroup division from Amsterdam toLondon, where it will mergewith the Decca RecordCompany to form a "broad, multi -purpose" company.

Costa Pilavachi, presi-dent of the Philips MusicGroup-who was alsonamed president of Decca inJanuary-will head upPhilips, which will be a keylabel operating under theDecca umbrella.

Chris Roberts, president,Universal Classics and Jazz, says themove is part of a long-term strategywhich was set in place beforeSeagram's buy-out of PolyGram.

"There was a need to consolidatebecause of the three different labelstructures," he says. Universal esti-mates that 25% of staff, mainly inback -room functions, will be affected.Other staff will be relocated or foundalternative employment withinUniversal, says the company. The moveleaves Universal's classical operationsconcentrated in the merged

    Costa Pilavachi

Philips/Decca operation, to be based inChiswick, west London, and Hamburg -based Deutsche Grammophon (DG).

Decca will have a broad remitemphasising its strengths in areas

such as operatic andchoral repertoire, as wellas crossover projects. DGwill continue to "take thehigh road and do what ithas always done well"according to Roberts, andconcentrate on its role asthe reference point forworks by established com-posers.

"Decca has not been ill -served by crossover projects, it'scleared the playing field for DG. Thenew Decca will not try to steal DG'score repertoire," says Roberts, refer-ring to earlier occasions when differ-ent PolyGram-owned labels recordedthe same works.

Among the active labels operatedby the Philips Music Group are:Philips Classics; Point Music, a ven-ture with Philip Glass' EuphorbiaProductions; and Gimell. Decca'slabels include Argo and MercuryLiving Presence. Decca's artist rosterincludes Vladimir Ashkenazy, Cecilia

  • Clocks away: programmerswelcome RA's 'Formats' planby Jon Heasman

LONDON - It's time for pro-grammers to throw away theircalculators: the "lighter touch"of UK radio regulator theRadio Authority (RA) is set tobring true programming skillsto the fore.

That's the consensus amongindustry executives followingthe first batch of new station"Formats" to be drawn up bythe RA. Formats replace the"Promise of Performance"(POP), which was previouslymade to the regulator as partof every station's licence terms.

The POPs were notoriouslydetailed, specifying percentagesof music categories (such as'70s, '80s, currents, recurrents)over any three hour period, aswell as requiring stations tomake specific commitments to,for example, the number ofnews, travel and communityinformation bulletins to bebroadcast each hour.

First proposed at the 1998Radio Festival in Birmingham(M&M, July 25, 1998) theRA's Format agreements aresimpler and shorter than thePOPs, aiming to enshrineeach broadcaster's basic char-acter without demanding toomany detailed programmingspecifics. Formats havecurrently been drawn up forstations in London and thesouth east, the midlands andthe north west of England-national stations and the restof UK are scheduled to becompleted by the end ofthe year.

Testimony to the new sys-tem is the Format agreed forthe music output of CHR sta-tion 95.8 Capital FM/London:"Music programming will bepredominantly [up to 100%]current chart hits, new releas-es and hits less than 10 yearsold. No more than 20% will behits over 10 years old."

The RA's head of program-ming and advertising, MartinCampbell explains: "The ideais to create a reasonableboundary around which peoplecan move. It means we'll beregulating more by the soundof the station than by somesort of equation in the POP. Italso signifies a major changein the relationship betweenthe stations and the authority."

Responding to criticismsfrom some quarters that theswitch from POPs to Formatswill lead to more overlapbetween competing stations,Campbell concedes: "That's pos-sibly true, but it's not necessar-ily a bad thing. It allows, with-in the boundary, the station toposition itself in the best way tohit [audience] targets as clearlyas it possibly can. Stations needthat flexibility to wanderaround. With Formats, I thinkyou will see programming skillscome to the fore a lot more nowthan they have in the past."

Broadcasters which havealready had their Formats

agreed with the RA are enthu-siastic: "We welcome it becauseit removes the need to pro-gramme by stopwatch," saysPaul Fairburn, managingdirector of Chrysalis Radio'sBirmingham -based stations100.7 Heart FM (soft AC) andGalaxy 102.2 (dance). "Underthe old system, even if you hadfinely crafted every [music cat-egory] percentage point on theSelector schedule, if the DJdropped a song because he'drun out of time that hour, itcould throw the percentagesout, and you'd be breakingyour POP."

"It [the new system] is notscheduling every last minuteof what were doing," agreesTim Page, programme con-troller at full -service 107.7The Wolf/Wolverhampton."We're being left much more toget on with it ourselves. Forinstance, with our 20% com-mitment to news andlocal/community information,it's now up to us how we do itand where we put it."

The Chrysalis Group's Echo Label-which was formerlylicensed to Universal-has been licensed to Dutchcompany Roadrunner throughout continental Europe.Pictured (l -r): Jeremy Lascelles, MD, Echo; Steve Lewis,CEO, Chrysalis Group Music Division; Dino Ostacchini, head of international, Echo; Charley Prick, VP, A&RInternational, Roadrunner; Cees Wessels, founder andowner, Roadrunner and Marcus Turner, manager, business and legal affairs, Roadrunner.

'Alternative' station to replace Blue Danubeby Susan L. Schuhmayer

VIENNA - Austrian publicbroadcaster ORF has announcedplans to revamp the Vienna fre-quency currently ' sharedbetween English -language BlueDanube and alternative musicstation FM4.

A new bilingual, "alternativemainstream" station will target15-29 year olds with a mix ofalternative rock, hip hop, soul, dance and comedy, but-likeBlue Danube-will also have astrong news bias.

Manfred Jochum, head ofORFs radio division, says theplans are "not just based on age,but also social milieu. We wantto make a really new stationwith the aim of doubling its dailyreach to 4%."

Existing radio legislationrequires the frequency's ouput tobe mainly in a foreign language,so the new station's programmeswill be in English, with Germanspoken in the evenings andovernight. Guests will be inter-viewed in their native tongue.

    Working groups, comprising

representatives from all ofORF's radio stations, havebeen meeting to develop theplans. Tilia Herold, BlueDanube's station manager, says: "I think it's time forreform. Everybody in our teamis interested enough to saythey will meet the challenge."

The Sch50 million (euros 3.9million) combined budget ofBlue Danube and FM4 willremain the same for the yet -to -be -named new station, which isexpected to start broadcastingin November.

Radio 2 gets big city coverageby Charles Ferro

COPENHAGEN - National cable/satel-lite AC station Radio 2 is to get threeterrestrial frequencies in Denmark'sthree largest cities-Copenhagen, Aarhusand Odense-in a movewhich will double thestation's potential audi-ence to around 800,000.

Local radio regulators inthe three cities have grantedRadio 2 rights to use vacant Ftfrequencies, despite the factthat the station doesn't technically holdbroadcast licences for those areas.Instead, Radio 2 will work with therespective city councils to provide theright formats for the local audiences.

Radio 2's AC music profile will be

    113k I t3

identical for all three stations whenthey go on air in July, although, saysmanaging director Jim Receveur, "wewill have local ads and local program-ming. The stations can legally simul-

cast news bulletins, [but] legisla-tion prohibits other forms of

    networking."Commenting on the

    decision to retain thesatellite/cable station's

AC format for the newterrestrial frequencies,

    2 Receveur explains:"Everybody [in Denmark]

is aiming for the 13-25 target group, but we think it's important to providea clear adult contemporary concept forthe large 30-49 age group."

"It's always a plus to have goodradio," comments Maj-Britt Bunde-

gaard, promotions manager at CMC,a Danish label which specialises indomestic and international compila-tion/greatest hits albums. "Radio 2has always been good about playingDanish music, and it appeals to thecore of our target group."

Radio 2 is owned by US broadcast-ing group Clear Channel Communica-tions, through a subsidiary of its out-door advertising group, the MoreGroup. It purchased the station lastyear from Radio Uptown and publictelecoms company Tele Danmark.

The new frequencies could be vitalin securing the future of Radio 2, asDenmark's Ministry of Culture haspersisted in postponing an announce-ment about the granting of Denmark'sfourth national FM licence, whichRadio 2 had high hopes of winning.

Belgian frequency truce moving nearer?by Marc Maes

BRUSSELS - The government ofFrench-speaking Belgium will finallydetermine a new frequency plan forsouthern Belgium within the next twomonths, following a year fraught withdisagreements between the country'sFrench and Flemish sectors.

In Flanders, state broadcaster VRTstill enjoys the lion's share of ratings:commercial stations are limited in bothsignal strength and coverage area, andit is only recently that the concept of

networking has been accepted. This is in stark contrast to south

Belgium where powerful networkssuch as Radio Contact, BEL-RTL, FunRadio, NRJ and Nostalgie are all well -established, providing public broad-caster RTBF with intense competition.

The Belgian -French government iscurrently reviewing its frequenciesallocation, with help from Belgian -French regulator the CSA. However, the government rejected the CS/Vslatest frequency plan two months ago.A spokesman explains: "There was

quite a lot of criticism [about the newfrequency plan], and we also heardthat some networks felt they had beengiven the wrong frequencies. We alsodon't seem to be able to agree on thenumber of [commercial] networkswhich should operate in Flanders."

The government must either acceptor reject the CSR's decision, so theonus is on the CSA to adapt the planwithin two months. It must then sub-mit the new plan to the government, which has yet to be installed followingBelgium's elections on June 13.

More Growth potentialfor MIDEM Americasby Emmanuel Legrand

MtAnu - MIDEM Americ-as-held June 22-25 atMiami Beach ConventionCentre-attracted almost3,000 participants from 63countries following thisyear's widening of its agen-da to include North as wellas Latin America and more focus onthe Internet.

Yet Xavier Roy, chief executive ofthe Reed MIDEM Organisation(RMO), which organises the event-previously known as MIDEM LatinAmerican & Caribbean-admits thata greater push is still needed toattract the US labels which wouldmake the event essential for top dis-tributors and exporters.

Roy says this year's MIDEMAmericas saw a dip in the number ofcompanies attending from 514 in1998 to 434, but delegates spanned abroad spectrum compared with previ-ous years. The decline was particular-ly significant amongst Latin Ameri-can companies, which are still infinancial crisis.

Yet Roy is convinced that MIDEMAmericas, especially with its widerscope, has plenty of potential. Quash-

ing rumours that RMO isseeking an alternative loca-tion, he says: "Miami is theideal place to attract the pro-fessionals from the region. The city combines NorthAmerican efficiency with acertain latin atmosphere. Itis also a wonderful platformfor the exposure of all the

music of the region, and latin musichas never enjoyed such a massiveinternational following."

Roy says that MIDEM Americas isa long term investment for his com-pany, and is convinced that MIDEMAmericas could soon match MIDEM'strade show in Cannes in scope.

RMO's other music event outsideCannes, MIDEM Asia, has been sus-pended for two years due to financialproblems in the region. However, Royis encouraged by signs of progressthere within the music industry, andis confident that the financial situa-tion will soon improve sufficiently toenable MIDEM to return to Asia. "Indue time we'll see if we return withthe initial formula or if we need a dif-ferent approach. I am confident thatAsians have the energy and thecapacity to overcome this situationquicker than we might think."

  • Tromso: Norway's city of hitmakersNorwegian pop and technohave for some time beensteadily colonising theEuropean charts, producingacts with internationalappeal out of the mountain-ous, fjord -laced landscape ofScandinavia's most low-keycountry. The northern city ofTromso is at the hub ofNorway's musical success, asKai Lofthus discovers.

Manimalistic, cool, darkand gloomy. The arcticsoundscape s ofTromso's techno musiccomplement the strik-

ing scenery of this small city and itsenvirons. Seemingly isolated in thefrozen north of Norway, surroundedby mountains, wildlife and the sea,Tromso manages to be one of the mosturban and progressive sources ofmusic in Europe.

Since the mid '80s, while rock actshave been virtually absent from thecity's underground music scene, popand techno acts such as Bel Canto,Bjorn Torske, Biosphere, MentalOverdrive, Volcano, Drum Island,Espen Lind-and most recently LisaStokke, who headlines the "MammaMia" musical in London, and LeneMarlin-are among the many whohave risen to European stardom.

Marlin, who signed to VirginRecords in 1997, is one of the bright-est stars in Tromso's pop firmament(M&M, April 17, 1999.) "I don't actu-ally know what makes Tromso such amusical city," she says, "[but] peoplehere are really interested in music."She has cut a swathe across Japanand several European territories, including Sweden, Italy, Denmarkand the UK. Significantly, she wassigned and nurtured by two otherTromso-ites, local A&R managerHans Olav Grottheim and managingdirector Per Eirik Johansen (formerlymanager of Bel Canto). After thesetwo executives joined Virgin in '97,the company was reinvigorated witha strong local A&R profile, which hadpreviously been absent from thelabel's business philosophy.

Independent mentalityTromso, many of whose 60,000 inhab-itants are college and university stu-dents from across the entire country, has traditionally been promoted totourists as the "Paris of the north"and "land of the midnight sun," andhas an impressively urban mindset.During the winter it's extremely coldand dark, and people are usuallyforced to stay inside and conduct theirown creative projects. But theirupbringing and tough environmenthave also bred in them stamina, aready wit and a "no -bullshit" atti-tude, which makes them stand outamong their compatriots. The leadingartists are consequently likely to begifted with a highly entrepreneurialspirit, and many have chosen tobypass the Norwegian music industryand land record deals directly withrecord companies in the UK (e.g.Deconstruction, Ferox, Djax andPaper) or Belgium (Crammed Discs,R&S and SSR.) Their subsequent suc-cess has sometimes actually been amatter of "in spite of" more than"because of," since there has neverbeen a specifically organised musicalenvironment in Tromso. However, both Lind and Stokke were involvedin theatre/musicals at theKongsbakken college. Anneli Drecker,

    Bel Canto's An

founding member and vocalist of BelCanto, says: "It wasn't possible tomake music for a living based athome. It was exhausting trying to getourselves noticed. I managed toignore the opposition after a while."

Radio's roleOne of the crucial elements in pro-moting the underground interest intechno music during the '80s wasradio. Vidar Hanssen, founder andmanaging director of the Tromso -based techno label/mail order opera-tion Beatservice Records, conductedhis own show on college sta-tion Studentradioen. The Beatservice labelis represented, forthe world, by VoicesOf Wonder inDenmark, and dis-tributed by labelssuch as Shellshocked

tickets, considering the limited massappeal of the films we show, which tendto be non -American" Vidar Hanssenadds: "The club culture has paradoxi-cally never really existed in Tromso. However, there used to be a synth -popenvironment around the [public youthculture centre] Ungdommens Hus,where many people were into vocal -dri-ven synth music like Depeche Mode. Atthat time, the record stores were alsoimporting a lot of records fromLondon."

BreakthroughWhat really ignited the major interestin music here was the record deal thatBel Canto, comprised of Drecker, NilsJohansen, and Geir Jenssen (later tobe known as the solo acts Bleep andBiosphere), landed with Brussels -based Crammed Discs, distributed byWarner Music in Europe. "[Bel Canto]were in Europe at the right time,

when house music broke," saysHanssen. "When Per Martinsen[aka Mental Overdrive] and[then DJ/producer] Hans OlavGrottheim went abroad as well, that also had a significant effecton the music scene in Tromso."

Additionally, Torske, Jenssen and(UK), Fax Label Mjos recorded for Brussels -USA (US), Love beatservice based SSR. Another Belgian

label, R&S Records, signedDrum Island, which is also the nameof a label run by Rune Lindbwk anddistributed by Sony Music in Norway. One of the key acts on the label is the23 -year -old female act Frost, alsoknown as Aggie Peterson. "I am clear-ly one of the younger generation," saysPeterson, "but I came into contactwith people via the society atUngdommens Hus, which arranged alot of parties and clubbing events. They made Tromso look like London, and it also became a trend to producetechnological music at home with sim-ple equipment. That has inspired allof us a lot, and we have been exchang-ing ideas and equipment. Many [of us]have also travelled a lot to London, and listened to a lot to Biosphere andBel Canto for inspiration.

"[People from Tromso] have alwaysbeen a little afraid of making themusic scene into a cliché," concludesPeterson, "but it's true that you canhear a lot of Tromso in the music, which uses elements like contrastsbetween hot and cold, or rough andsmooth sounds."

Records (Hong recordsKong), Lowlands(Belgium), and Sonic Rendezvous (theNetherlands). Among the currentsignings on Beatservice are Teebee &K (drum'n'bass), Information (arcticambient), Motion Control (progres-sive house/minimalistic techno), MindOver MIDI (minimalistic techno),Sternklang (triphop, dub, electronica, drum'n'bass) and Aedena Cycle (darkarctic ambient, with elements of jazzand eastern flavours).

Meanwhile, Mjos and Lindbk, who later formed the band DrumIsland together with Torbj conBrundtland, both had their separateshows on the now defunct BryggaRadio. Lindbeek was also part ofAlania, while Mjos and Brundtlandwere part of Those Norwegians.

MIDEM AmericasIf business was the primereason for some 3,000 par-ticipants attending the re -branded MIDEM Americastrade show, held June 22-25 at Miami Beach's Conv-ention Center, the agendaoscillated between theplace of latin music intoday's world, and thefuture of the total musicindustry in tomorrow'sworld. Emmanuel Legrandreports.

MIDEM Americas wasfirst and foremost acelebration of latinmusic, and the genrehad much to cele-

brate, including Jennifer Lopez'current number 1 hit single andRicky Martin's recent number 1position on the Billboard charts.

Several events and initiativesduring MIDEM Americas '99-sporting its new title for the firsttime since the change fromMIDEM Latin America &Caribbean-confirmed thatlatin music has become aforce to be reckoned with.Probably the strongest signwas the announcement of thecreation-for autumn 2000-of the first -ever LatinGrammy Awards. A dozen of theregion's artists, including Gloriaand Emilio Estefan, Jon Secada,Shakira and Café Tacuba, were onhand to hear this important news.

Recognition in the US throughthis specific awards schemereflects the increasing popularity

the latin explosion"The explosionhas started andwe have onlyseen thebeginning."

    - Jose Behar,president/CEO, EMI Latin

of the genre among the NorthAmerican public. The LatinGrammy Awards will be, in thewords of Michael Greene, presi-dent/CEO of organiser's bodies theRecording Academy and LARAS,an occasion to celebrate "the cre-ative spirit, the artistic achieve-

ments and the incredible diversityof this vast world of music."

As Jose Behar, president/CEO ofEMI Latin puts it, latin music is"already big business, and a goodbusiness opportunity." He notesthat the time gap between the suc-cess of true crossover acts-theGloria Estefans, Jon Secadas andRicky Martins of the latin world-is becoming shorter and shorter, demonstrating growing acceptanceby the American public.

"It's still in the developmentstage, but I have no doubtthat it's not just a fad,"Behar adds. "We, as labels, have a responsibility tocontinue to evolve musical-ly with the artists, to keepit fresh and exciting. The

explosion has started and we'veseen only the beginning."

These views are shared byWarner Music Latin America pres-ident Andre Midani, who wasawarded MIDEM Americas' Personof the Year award this year. However, Midani, who has promot-

Andre Midani the ambassador of latin MusicThere could be no one betterthan Andre Midani, MIDEMAmericas 1999 NesuhiErtegun Person Of The Year,to be an ambassador for latin

music around the world.Having witnessed-and been part

of-the changes in the latin marketduring the past few decades, andhaving worked with such seminalartists as Gilberto Gil (who per-formed three songs during Midani'sPerson of the Year dinner in Miamion June 23), Chico Buarque, JorgeBen Jor, Caetano Veloso and manymore, he has helped put the wholeSouth American continent on themusical map.

Midani started his career inFrance before moving, in the mid -'60s, to Brazil, where he worked forEMI and Phonogram and eventuallyset up WEA Brazil in 1976. Now, aspresident of Warner Music LatinAmerica, he looks back on the evolu-tion of market.

'Warner was the last major toenter this market," he recalls. "Inthose days, what was called WEAInternational was almost fully dedi-cated to being a vehicle for the distri-bution of [North] American product. But this concept became obsolete assoon as we started to develop localacts." Since then Warner has estab-lished a regional structure in LatinAmerica, and Midani was appointedin 1995 to oversee the group's activi-ties in the region.

He observes the development ofa whole new latin scene, ready toconquer the world, with greatenthusiasm. "Artists have been theforce behind these changes, not therecord companies," he asserts."The artists are the movers.

    - Andre Midani,president, Warner Music

    Latin American

Record companies are conservativeby nature; they become conserva-tive because of the magnitude ofthe money involved and the com-plexity of the logistics they have toset up."

However, he considers that thecurrent Latin wave, with acts suchas Ricky Martin, owes more to tra-ditional international pop music

standards than to genuine latinmusic. "In the USA, it wasinevitable that in the medium tolong term there would be a bigbreak for latin music," he explains."But aside from pop acts, latinmusic is encountering some resis-tance. There's a resistance to thelanguage; latin music often hasdifficult harmonies; and therhythm structure of the songssometimes makes it difficult forEuropean or American audiencesto adopt this music."

These drawbacks might prove, inthe end, to be advantages, believesMidani, who considers that genressuch as rock'n'roll, classical andjazz are "dead," and that thereforeaudiences are in search of some-thing new or different. "There is ashortage of good music, and there'sa whole side of the market which isnot fulfilled," he says. "This couldbe the chance for latin music to stepin. It has a great freshness and adiversity. When and how it willhappen I don't know-but it willhappen."

According to Midani, the latinmarket can rely on three mainsources of repertoire: the Indianworld, which encompasses Peru,Bolivia and Mexico; "white" musicfrom Chile or Argentina, whereIndian roots are almost non-exis-tent; and the Afro -black inspiredmusic from countries such asBrazil, Venezuela, Colombia andthe Caribbean Islands, includingCuba. He is convinced, for histori-cal reasons, that the latter genrewill receive a better response fromEuropean audiences, whereas inthe US, Mexican -originated musicwill dominate due to the presence

of a significant population ofMexican origin.

Cuban musicspread success, but Midani pointsout that "Cuban music is in fashionbecause of a half -dozen artists withtremendous charisma, who are notplaying the music of today but musicfrom 30 or 50 years ago."

For Midani, a band which exem-plifies the new generation of latinacts, ready to embrace modern musicin their own way without losing sightof their culture, is Warner Music -signed Mexican rock band CaféTacuba. "Rock in Latin America hasbeen digested and mixed with localculture. Café Tacuba are very mod-ern, but respectful of their culture. They are as rock as anyone, but theyare as Mexican as mariachis. That'sthe way to the future-be unique."

Midani also emphasises the closeties between Latin America andSpain. He views Spain as a bridge toEurope, and considers that Spanishacts have a lot of potential in LatinAmerica. "When an artist likeAlejandro Sanz sells 2 million copiesin Spain, you have to bear in mindthat he also sold the same amount inLatin America, including Brazil," hepoints out.

Midani, who calls his Person ofthe Year award a "marvellous acci-dent," says he feels privileged to havespent most of his professional life inSouth America. "I came to this conti-nent as a Frenchman and I wasaccepted as one of theirs. No one toldme 'Gringo, go back to your owncountry.' This is a privilege. I havebeen totally focused, dedicated towhat I was doing. I am proud of thework I've done and blessed to meet somany great artists."

Internet is the "now" topicThe other hot topic of the momentis the situation of the music indus-try with regard to Internet -relateddevelopments. A series of specificconferences was organised duringMIDEM Americas, and as DigitalMusic Network executive VP TedCohen said during the sessionDigital Distribution: Searching forNew Business Models, "what wasonce a theoretical discussion is hap-pening now." Cohen also confirmedthat the US market was leading theway, both in terms of technologyand by the scale of its Internet ini-tiatives. Gerd Leonard, president ofOnline Music Company, whichfocuses on business -to -business ser-vices, licensing music for use in TVand film synchronisation, believesthat the Internet is "about businessissues, not technology." He foreseesthe need to adapt to a new environ-ment in which "you don't have toown the music any more-`owning'has been substituted to 'alwayshaving access to.' "

But Leonard warns that toomany initiatives are simply boundto fail, as are many companies

active in the Internet field. "DigitalDarwinism will prevail: those whoare too weak will die, and thosewho eat too much will die too,"Leonard concluded.

The attitude of consumers iswhat drives business on theInternet, according to AlanMcGlade, president/CEO of TheBox Worldwide. He is confidentthat the convergence between PCsand TV sets is going to happen, butthe shape of this is still to bedefined. SaysMcGlade: "Wehave to watchcarefully whatconsumer elec-tronics goodsare doing, andwatch what con-sumers are like-ly to adopt inthe end. Then,as contentproviders, we'llhave to adjustto what the con-sumers choose."

Of course, both for labels andrights societies, the question ofrights protection remains crucial.Eduardo Bautista, president ofSpanish rights society SGAE, made

a pledge forinternationalcooperation oninternationalstandards of pro-tection. "If weare not careful,"he said, "we willdevalue the sys-tem, and insteadof making usricher [theInternet] willmake us poorer."

    On thebrighter side,Ralph Peer, pres-

RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLEAlthough the comment one hears most about ToddTerry's new album Resolutions (Virgin/US) is that itcould be the record to break drum'n'bass in the States,it should not be overlooked that the genre could equal-ly benefit from some crossover action in Europe. Firstsingle Let It Ride might well be the track to do justthat. There is nothing particularly revolutionary aboutTerry's approach to elrum'n'bass, but what lifts himhead and shoulders above the crowd is the killer cho-rus. Wistful, achingly tuneful, vocodered-pure pop inother words, but with a furious breakbeat churningaway underneath.

HO HUMMNeja's The Game (New Music/Italy) has already wonUn Disco Per L'Estate '99 and Festivalbar '99, Italy'stwo largest song festivals after San Remo. What isundeniable with the track is that it is a song in themost classic sense, the dance element being purelyincidental. That said, there is a splendid hummed"Turupapaparara" chorus backed up with bucketloadsof strings which owes much to the Earth, Wind & Fireapproach. An upful, zingy, singalong song that has"holiday soundtrack" written all over it.

MORE HUMMINGBacked up by an unashamedly thumping "son of big -beat" groove, Sophia Loren's original '60s hit Zoo Be ZooBe Zoo (EMI/UK) is pretty much guaranteed to chartonce again with a new set of mixes. The faux -naivemelody and vocal delivery are disarmingly cute, whilethe all -new backing is perfect for the occasion. The clubremixes lean towards trance, which is perfect for theIbiza season, while the Funky Monkey mix combines adeep house vibe with flashes of the original flutes.

THE ACCEPTABLE FACE OF SCATAfter a promising but frustrating start when it was ini-tially released in April, Grant Nelson's Step 2 Me(Swing City Records/UK), featuring Jean McClain, suddenly looks set for a new lease of life. "The track

was being hammered by [UK dance net-work] Galaxy just before its officialrelease," says Swing City product man-ager Kate Ross, "but we didn't getplaylisted by BBC Radio 1. Kiss FMwas right in the middle of its change ofmusic policy and didn't go for it either."

Nevertheless, Step 2 Me sold 15,000CD and vinyl copies in the UK with aminimum of promotion and indepen-dent distribution. Now, with severalmajor labels in the UK chasing thetrack and licensing deals completed inmost of the major European territories,

Nelson's track is finally looking set to be one of thissummer's big tunes.

McClain's deep, powerful voice, backed up by lush, tastefully arranged strings, shimmering backingvocals, a bit of scat singing and a classic chorus add upto a definitive crossover moment.

The track is already starting to make an impact inSpain, one of the major sources of summer hits inEurope, and is about to be released in France throughBMG, in Portugal through Vidisco, on Arcade inScandinavia-including Iceland and Finland-and onBYTE in the Benelux countries.

EMI -Medley exportmanager Mette Fjeldsted says that Spainis currently the prime target because firstreactions were overwhelmingly positivethere. Later this year, Me & My will go onan intensive promotional tour of Spain

tled down in Spain for a while and startedwriting. For the first time we had time togo into ourselves, to find out who we reallywere, and the songs came naturally."

Me & My's debut album sold 2 millionunits, with Japan accounting for 1.5 mil-lion of those. Keen on a follow-up, theJapanese company released a local versionof the album on January 27,where it hassold some 50,000 units so far on the back ofSo Many Men, the first single in that terri-tory. The label will reinforce the initialintroduction later this year with a launchof the "standard" international version ofLet The Love Go On, with the title track asthe second single.

European air agrees with Hirschby Christian Lorenz

Remember that achingly beautiful voiceon French electronica duo Air's All INeed? It belongs to American actress BethHirsch, who plans to launch a solo careeras a singer/songwriter from her newLondon home.

Hirsch says her contribution to lastyear's most acclaimed album, Air's MoonSafari (Source/Virgin), was fortuitous."We all lived in the Montmartre quarter,"she laughs, "and I met Air through mutu-al friends."

Hirsch had moved to Paris in 1992 tostudy acting, disillusioned with the rat raceamong fellow acting students in the US. "Ihad a friend in Paris who said 'come andcheck this out,'" she recalls. "You see, in theUS everybody is into this 'superstar' thing, and the scene in Paris was so much morerelaxed and artistic."

She admits that "I landed in a prettybohemian scene somehow." Music and par-ties were big in Hirsch's circles and shestarted to sing along to friends messingabout on acoustic guitars. Soon tagged "thechanteuse," she liked her new nicknameand got hooked on singing "because it mademe feel wanted."

More coffee house than techno club, herown material reflects those early Paris days."The guitar is very important to me when Iwrite," admits Hirsch, who has a strong pen-chant for folk music. "Folk is timeless," she

shrugs. On her future direction as an artistshe muses: "I like telling my stories. That'swhere I see myself going."

Now based inLondon-"eventual-ly I plan to go backto New York, but I'mnot ready yet andLondon felt like anatural stopover"-Hirsch has got theintimate, acoustic P -Town Rubies EP outon indie Dorado andis currently writingmaterial for herdebut album.

Keeping onefoot in thedance scene, she also wrotelyrics for andsang lead vocals on a remake of UK actD*Note's instrumental D*Votion, which isscheduled for release on VC Recordings/Virgin at the end of August.

According to Hirsch's manager, FrancoisMillet, the album's label home is still anopen question. "We didn't give Dorado thealbum option," he comments. "The nextthing Beth will do is to open for [Talkin'Loud/Mercury-signed] soul singer TerryCallier on his upcoming European tour inOctober. We are planning to have some-thing in the shops in time for the tour."
