The sheer number of businesses that gave their time and expertise to help the workforce of the future to be job-ready was outstanding. Many businesses were interested to hear about how to access school based apprenticeships and traineeships and the incentives in going down this pathway. As always our team are keen to hear from any employers who would like to know more about the changes in the VET sector for school students. I would particularly like to acknowledge the work of Roxanne Rowland, Michael Pater and Helen Wilden in coordinating these two events.

The South Australian Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People, April Lawrie visits MBHS. By Lyndsee Frost

On Monday 17th of May, April Lawrie the Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People, visited Murray Bridge High School. April is passionate about working with young Aboriginal People and hearing their stories. She spent two hours working with a group of Year 10, 11 and 12 students to get their voice. The students spent their session with April discussing current issues that affect Aboriginal people, such as Black Lives Matter, Incarceration rates and racism and how they see that affecting them and their families. The students were able to share their thoughts in a safe environment, guided by April and her team as well as Aunty Cheryl. Thank you April for hearing the voices of our students.

AFL Umpiring Course by Aaron Noske

On Thursday 20th of May 10 Murray Bridge High School students travelled to the Mount Barker Football Club to undertake an AFL umpiring and coaching course. This course was run by the SANFL and allowed our students to gain a better understanding of the importance of and how to umpire and coach AFL football. The day consisted of 2x1.5-hour sessions run by experts in the fields of umpiring and coaching, allowing our students to gain firsthand experience in these areas. Students learned a lot about these two disciplines and had much fun in the process working with other schools, creating new friendships, and being pushed out of their comfort zones.

Industry Sprints by Michael Pater

On Thursday 20th of May, Murray Bridge High school conducted Industry Sprints into the local community. The event was in two parts, daytime visits to industry and an evening event to find out what skills and attitudes employers look for in young people looking to enter their industry.

During the day five teams consisting of MBHS Staff and Department for Education officers visited 37 local industry sites to outline the new features of the Flexible Industry Pathways and School Based Apprenticeships/Traineeships and explore opportunities for closer ties between their business and the school. Conversations were very productive and supportive of students to stay and contribute in the local area. Thank you to all businesses who opened their doors, we will be following up as soon as practicable.

In the evening about 90 businesses, training organisations and education staff attended a forum at the Murray Bridge Community Club. The evening consisted with two "On the Couch" style presentations one with businesspeople, one with school principals. The main part of the evening was spent at tables listening to employers explaining the skills and attitudes they look for in a young person. Many notes were taken and we have begun the process of reviewing the information and planning our next steps.

Thank you to all who participated in the day. A big thanks to all those involved in the organising of both events.

Digital Strategy Survey is now open – have your say! As part of our plan to build world-class education in South Australia, the Department for Education is developing a new digital strategy.

The digital strategy will:

how we prepare children to learn, live and work in a digitally driven world.

The digital strategy will focus on four key themes:

improving and enhancing teaching and learning

a productive workplace

effective data use

alignment to broader government opportunities.

The strategy will also look beyond offices and classrooms and consider how technology can benefit communities and the state.

Have your say by completing the online survey (10-15min).
