QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“You can either make excuses
why it won’t work or you can
find a way to make it work. I
choose the latter.”
BRANT GARVEY
STAGE 4 ENGLISH
It’s all about the horrific this term in Stage Four English; Gothic Horror.
Year Seven pictured below, are full steam ahead into their prose
fiction study of Neil Gaiman’s ‘Coraline’, whilst Year Eight are about to
take to the classroom stage in their analytical study of one of the
many dramatisations of Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’. Through their relative
studies Stage Four students are plunging into genre studies on the
world of eerie manor houses, Transylvanic castles, parallel worlds and
the undead to learn about textual structure and integrity, characters,
connections between composers, characters, and audience, and
literary devices. As expected students are wholeheartedly taking to
their modules and are
continuing to extend
themselves through
inc reas ing the i r
r e a d i n g s k i l l s ,
v o c a b u l a r y ,
understanding, or
composition and
representation. Well
done my little English
critters- keep up the
horrifying work.

SECONDARY TECHNOLOGY
Stage 4 Technology Mandatory students have just started using special hacking software to modify
(and we think improve) app based games to build and design ‘smart cities’ of the future. This involves
improving traffic flow and using automated vehicles to improve the efficiency of services in
metropolitan areas. I am consistently amazed at their capacity to learn and understand digital
systems, so keep your eyes on this crew.
Stage 5/6 ICT have been using micro-controller software to redesign
game controllers. This has required creative thinking and a very fluid
design process to meet the needs of a diverse gaming society. Modi-
fication of controllers include extension into multiplayer capacity,
controllers for people with limited vision, and some very modified
controllers for people with disabilities and limited movement.

MUNGINDI SHOW
Mungindi Central School students were fortunate enough to enter some wonderful artworks into the
Mungindi Show Pavilion. Ms Judi Lane supervised their art work. There were also a few entries in the
cooking section and the farm produce section. Mrs Belinda Brosnan was able to encourage the
students to enter these.
There were also multiple entries into the school work sections with class teachers assisting the students to
achieve the best results.
Well done to all our students who tried and entered items into the Mungindi Show. There was a lot of
stiff competition but you should all be proud of your efforts. Thank you to the Mungindi Show
Committee and Mungindi Show Auxiliary for putting together a wonderful show and letting our students
share their talents with the Mungindi community.

STAGE 5 CAREERS EXPO
Stage 5 students participated in the Careers Expo in Moree last week. The day was facilitated by the
Moree Youth Council, in partnership with TAFE and Careers Network. The Career Expo was an excellent
opportunity for our students to obtain vital information about school subject choices, university, various
career pathways, cadetships, traineeships and scholarships just to name a few areas.
The Careers Expo was targeting youth to empower themselves to find a career passion and develop
skills in their desired field. The guest speaker was Paralympian and motivational speaker and creator
the No Xcuses Mindset, Brant Garvey, who was so
inspiring and motivating. His simple message of
"you need to take action and be the catalyst to
make the change you want to make" seeded
thoughtful conversations for our students to reflect
on.

NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK
It’s National Science Week, so what a great time to share the great things our students are achieving
in fields of Science, Technology and STEM.
Stage 4 Science have been exploring the world of geology, and have
immersed themselves in the lives of mining magnates, coalface workers and
mineralogists. Students have created edible rocks, modelled mining of
precious resources, and worked hard to reach yield quotas to keep their jobs
as ‘cookie miners’. They have also investigated the effects of cooling rate on
rocks, and identified geological sources and processes for a range of
different rocks types. This week we will finish up by making ochre, and
celebrating the use of minerals for cultural celebrations.
Stage 5 Science have also been
geologists this term, by looking at internal
earth processes including tectonic
movement, faults, earthquakes and
volcanism. Students are currently
completing their assessment which
requires them to build an earthquake
proof building to be constructed by UN
volunteers in earthquake prone Nepal. A
limited resource budget, and very strict building codes have required creative thinking and innovative
engineering. Stay tuned for test results next week.
STEAM are exploring ‘colour’ this term. As part of their
rotations, Middle School students have been
designing and building indigenous instruments,
constructing kaleidoscopes, learning about
properties of light, and building mechanical artists just
to name a few activities.
