    Alma Nadarevic will cycle a tough 200 kilometres over two days in an emotional tribute to her mother who was diagnosed with cancer last year.

    e Caroline Springs resident is taking part in this years Ride to Conquer Cancer to raise money for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

    And she says she will think not only of her mother along the way but also her beloved grandfather, who lost his battle with prostate cancer eight years ago.

    Ms Nadarevic, 26, said that, like most families, hers had been hit by cancer and she had felt the very real e ects of how it could turn lives upside down.

    Before her mother was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, her cousins wife battled and beat breast cancer.

    Ms Nadarevic said that a er going to countless doctors visits with her mother and hearing positive prognosis a er positive prognosis, she began to think of all of the

    families dealing with a prognosis that le them with a very slim chance of survival.

    Every time we went for a scan and treatment we heard good news . . . and then I thought of all those people hearing bad news all the time and realised that one of the reasons people were facing a poor prognosis was lack of funding, Ms Nadarevic told Star Weekly. It really opened my eyes.

    She said the ride on October 25-26 would be a way to vent her frustration at seeing her loved ones so ill, while it would also reward her with a chance to raise much-needed funds for a great cause.

    Anybody can do it, she said. Its amazing reading and hearing about everyones story and to see all the di erent people competing. Im pushing the boundaries with three days of training a week, but its worth it.

    Ms Nadarevic has already beaten her initial target of $2500 and now hopes to hit $3000.

    Michael Matalewski will replace Broden Borg on Melton council a er winning a countback .

    It took the Victorian Electoral Commission less than an hour last Wednesday to determine that Mr Matalewski will take over from the Coburn ward councillor, who announced his resignation in April .

    Mr Borg had nominated Mr Matalewski as his own preference in the 2012 council

    Mr Matalewski last week vowed to stand by the promises he made during the 2012 election.

    I am very humbled to have received this opportunity and will do my utmost to serve the people of Melton to the best of my ability, he said.

    Councils are continuing their fight against the freeze on indexation of federal financial assistance grants.

    The federal government announced a freeze on indexation in the federal budget in May that will mean $139 million is ripped from council budgets across Victoria in the next three years.

    Municipal Association of Victoria president Bill McArthur said councils would start to feel the real impact of the cuts when the first of the quarterly payments were due to be paid. That was last week.

    Weve known since May that these cuts were coming, and some councils have had to take extreme measures, like scaling back road maintenance and other council services, to make up for the shortfall, Cr McArthur said.

    These cuts will force councils to reassess their budget options. Some councils may increase rates. This funding loss leaves communities vulnerable to scaled-back services and potentially deteriorating infrastructure.

    Cr McArthur said the municipal association had been working hard with councils to voice opposition to the freeze, and to set up a financial assistance grants taskforce made up of councillors and officers from rural and metropolitan councils.

    Melton council has a shortfall of $526,000 in its 2014-15 budget.

    According to Melton chief executive Kelvin Tori, the shortfall is due to a combination of

    the effect of a reduced allocation to the state of Victoria and removal of indexation.

    The indexation element is about $340,000, he said. Its anticipated that with a 2.5 per cent consumer price index over the next two years, council over three years will lose a total of approximately $1 million.

    Mr Tori said the budget shortfall hadnt directly affected particular programs or projects, but it would be taken into account in the mid-year review of the budget.

    Last month, Moorabool council slammed the federal governments decision.

    Mayor Paul Tatchell said the grants were vital to council delivering services and keeping assets up to date.

    The [grants] are used to maintain infrastructure assets, including local roads, bridges, parks, swimming pools, libraries and community halls, as well as services to the young, elderly and community groups of all kinds, Cr Tatchell said.

    The funds form a critical part of councils revenue base as general-purpose funding for a variety of activities and services that council provides. Freezing them for three years will put enormous pressure on our budgets.

    The council said it would lose $5.3 million over 10 years because of the changes.

    Aboriginal, refugee and disabled school-leavers in Brimbank and Melton are progressing into further education, apprenticeships or full-time work.

    A report by Melton and Brimbank Local Learning and Employment Network (MBLLEN) shows that most of the 111 students deemed vulnerable in years 10, 11 and 12 at 10 government schools and two specialist schools in Melton and Brimbank had either found work or gone on to further education.

    MBLLEN commissioned education consultant Mary Cahill to investigate the progress since they left school of students with indigenous or refugee backgrounds, or with disabilities.

    Data was collected from Copperfield SC (three campuses), Keilor Downs SC, Kurunjang SC, Lakeview SC, Melton SC, St Albans SC, Staughton SC, Sunshine SC (four campuses), Taylors Lakes SC and Victoria University SC (two campuses).

    MBLLEN executive officer Graeme Brown said he was pleased with results showing that more than three-quarters of indigenous students finished year 12 and went on to successful outcomes.

    Seventy-seven per cent of refugee students and 72 per cent of students with disabilities also went to university or TAFE, started an apprenticeship or found a full-time job.

    The principal of Jackson School, Joan OConnor-Cox, said every 2013 school-leaver had found a placement.

    Move over octomum Stephanie Ferguson has seen more than 200 kids live under her roof.

    The 61-year-old Melton resident signed up to be a foster carer 20 years ago and has had up to six kids living with her at any one time.

    Some children stay for a night; others for months and years. Among the latter were two brothers who stayed with her for five years and still visit, and a girl who later stayed with her when she had her first baby.

    At the moment, Ms Ferguson is housing three siblings and one other teen.

    A lot of them have called me mum, she said. One particular boy, hes just superb. Of all the kids, I call him my golden child.

    He was over here with nobody, and you would think he wouldve been the one to stray onto the wrong track, but hes proved himself. He still comes to see me, phones me at least once a week, and if I ever need anything done, hell come and do it. I love him to death.

    Bacchus Marsh sisters Karlie Brown and Ashley Iacono are taking on the fashion industry one beautiful gown at a time.

    The pair set up their fashion line, Elke Anouk Couture, early this year and have already made a name for themselves by producing exquisite handmade gowns and childrens clothing at an affordable price.

    Designer and dressmaker Karlie said that after working with some of Australias leading bridal labels in Melbourne and Sydney, she and her sister decided it was time to bring couture to Melbournes west and allow brides the chance to enjoy a gown made to fit perfectly.

    I wanted to keep the dresses quite affordable for a handmade piece, Karlie told Star Weekly. We also wanted to focus on luxurious childrens

    wear each piece can take anywhere between six and 10 hours to make.

    Karlie said that although there had been a big trend towards vintage pieces recently, many of the brides she had designed for still opted for more traditional gowns, while still accentuating the female form with fabrics such as tulle, satin and silk.

    Its very rewarding, she said. This is my passion, this is what I love doing and theres nothing like this around here.

    Ashley, who looks after the business side, said wedding gowns were just one part of the business. She said christening, communion and debutante ball dresses were also popular.

    It brings something really different to the area, she said.

    Diggers Rest Primary School principal Rachelle Hedger said the outpost was a welcome addition .

    We know the importance of reading to our students and to the community as a whole, so were very excited for this to begin.

    e collection includes more than 300 books, magazines, DVDs and audio books for children and adults.

    Residents can access the outpost every Tuesday from 9.30-11.30am and ursday from 2.30-4.30pm.

    Library sta will be on hand to answer queries. Items in the collection will change on a monthly basis.
