The Department of Social Work, Jamia Millia Islamia, was accorded the status of Department of

Special Assistance (DSA) in the year 1991 by University Grants Commission (UGC) which was

followed by two more phases of DSA. Keeping in view the significant achievements as well as

potential for excellence, the department was recently upgraded as the UGC Centre for

Advanced Study (CAS) in April 2010. The UGC CAS programme has, by providing the required

infrastructure, enabled the department to focus on developing the two units.

ü Research and Resource Unit on Social Work with Minorities (RRUSWM); and

ü Behavior and Personality Enrichment Laboratory (BPEL)

It is the first Social Work department in the country to earn this status. The department was also

sanctioned assistance from UGC under the ASSISH programme (2005-2010). The DSA,

ASSISH and CAS put together have strengthened the department in terms of academic quality

and infrastructure facilities.

The Department of Social Work with its precursor the Jamia School of Social Work came into

being over 40 years ago to give yet another expression to Jamia's historic mission of service to

the community. Jamia is known, among other activities, for rendering services to the

neighbourhood through adult education programmes including night schools, literacy centers,

and libraries for neo-literate, recreation for youth, and training of women and girls for their future

social and economic roles.

The Department has been associated with several National and International organizations

including corporate houses, non-governmental organizations, public sector and autonomous

organizations, various ministries of the government, different consultancy organizations and

reputed academic institutions. The department's community outreach programme was

instrumental in the setting up of the Zakir Husain Memorial Welfare Society and the Child

Guidance Centre.

of their field practicum.

As part of internal assessment, every student has to prepare an assignment. Every assignment

presents a comprehensive study of the particular topic where the special focus is on the

student's perspective and his/her personal opinion about the topic the field experiences. The

students are also required to give an ppt presentation to the whole class and the respective

teacher.

Individual conference is a guided interaction between the students and the assigned faculty

supervisor to analyse issue and problems arising out of fieldwork experiences. It focuses on

work assignment and work schedule, analysis of client systems and problem situation. It

enhances the recording skills of the students and facilitates the evaluation of learning level

achieved.

Group conference is a mechanism to facilitate professional sharing of fieldwork experiences

with fellow students and faculty supervisors. It provides the students an exposure to different

field setting and an opportunity to discuss variety of issues and problems and their implications

in practice. Group conference also facilitates problem solving through group efforts and

enhances ability to work as a team member. It helps in developing presentation skills, ability to

A weeklong orientation programme is designed and conducted for every batch with the purpose

to get an acquaintance with the nature and content of the course. Working professionals from

various fields are invited to share their experiences. A three-day communication lab strengthens

the seven-day orientation programme, where the students get an opportunity to display and

enhance their communication skills.

Orientation Programme

The department in collaboration with NSS organizes an educational camp for M.A. (Social

Work) first year and B.A. (Social Work) second year students in a rural area, every year as a part

of the course curriculum. The camp is the best place to sharpen the skills of rapport formation,

situational analysis and awareness generation in a rural community. Students develop an

understanding of group dynamics and power structures in a rural community. They also sharpen

their skills of group living and learn to initiate the development of attitudes conducive for effective

teamwork. This batch went to Chajjunagar, a village in Palwal district of Haryana. The camp was

focused on comprehensive theoretical inputs and practical utilization of PRA techniques and

other skills.

Page 20: Brochure Msw

The students participated in a number of activities organized by the Subject Association such as

group discussions, debates, film shows, and cultural events. Participation in these activities

enabled the students to take on responsibilities and accomplish the task at hand in their own

innovative way.

The Department organizes various national and international seminars, symposiums and

conferences on different emerging issues regularly. Some of them are, “Relevance of Policy

reforms and Development: Challenges before emerging Economies”, “Human Resource

Management in twenty first century”, etc. The conferences and seminars are aimed at bringing

various stakeholders into a colloquium to debate and discuss policy issues, innovative practices

and intervention strategies associated with the social work profession.

Every year, Subject Association of the department organizes a socio-cultural festival. This year

the theme of the festival was inclusive development. A significant number of events like intra

faculty debate competition, JAM, street theatre competition and music competitions were held.

The Inter Agency Sports and Cultural Meet organized by the department, provides a platform for
