The four areas most in need of volunteers right now.

1) Greeters welcome everyone as they arrive for the weekend Masses. They give directions or point the way for visitors. They should be friendly and outgoing. Greeters serve for a month of Sundays 4 times per year. We need a total of 60 Greeters. There will be a new training session once all the teams are filled.

2) Ushers assist with seating when necessary, collect the offering and distribute bulletins at the end of Mass. They, along with the greeters, know where our first aide and medical equipment are kept, and have an awareness of the first responders, nurses and doctors present at Mass. Ushers serve a month of Sundays 4 times per year. We need a total of 60 Ushers to accomplish this. There will be a training session once all the teams are filled.

3) Padua Perks is our parish brunch held in the Social Hall on the 1st Sunday of the month after the 11:00 am Mass (at noon). We need three teams of six peo-ple to host Padua Perks 4 times per year. Sign up your family and friends and make your team!

4) Parish Picnic workers are needed every year, but especially on Saturday, June 16, 2018. This will be a smaller, more intimate picnic in 2018, but we still want to recruit volunteers now. Our first meeting will be on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 7:00 pm in the Social Hall. Please make note of both dates and come help shape the future of this annual parish gathering.

Those of you already volunteer-ing have my deep gratitude. It will help us greatly if we know you are recommitting for this coming year.

You will be receiving a letter and a card in the mail like the one shown here. If you are already participating in a ministry, please mark that down on the Intention Card, which we ask you to bring to church on the weekend of October 14th.

Thank you for answering the call.

Youth Ministry News — from Stacy Gillenwater, Youth Minister

Several students also volunteered to serve at the Franciscan Kitchen each Thursday during the summer like we do each week all year long. Forty nine students and six parent chaperones also attended the Belle of Louisville Cruise on a nice summer evening in July. There was also a fun Day at Perrin Park for the incoming 7th graders that helped familiarize them with other deanery youth their age. Finally, we were able to get a lot of planning, organizing and cleaning done by the end of summer.

Here’s a quick recap of how many of St. Anthony’s youth remained engaged with their parish over the summer. Dozens of kids participated in Summer Daze, where we met on three Tuesday’s during the summer and provided a lot of service to places like Azalea Hills Retirement Center, Ther-apeutic Horse Farm and Exit 0. Of course, we also had fun during Summer Daze by swimming, participating in outdoor games/cookout at the Mount, Mass at OLPH and partook in social activities with the other deanery parishes.

Saint Anthony Youth Ministry did not

slow down during the summer break. Get ready,

there are many more exciting activities and

events planned for the coming months.

The 7th and 8th graders kicked off the start of this school year with a splash at the Welcome Back Pool Party at the home of Jim and Judy Kenney. This year’s theme was “New Beginnings” and our bible verse to reflect upon was:

I can do all things through him who strengthens me.—Philippians 4:13

Welcome Back!

St. Anthony Youth Ministry is excited to announce that we hosted a Mother /Son Sock Hop on Friday, September 22, from 6:00 pm till 8:00 pm in the Parish Gym. It was open to all K–8 boys and their moms or a special woman in their life. We were a Rockin’ and Rollin’ with music, dancing, games, photos, food and fellowship. Along those lines, we are hosting our second annual Father Daughter Dance on Friday, February 9, so mark your calendars now. Just like last year, there will be music, dancing, photo’s, food and much more.

NCYC (National Catholic Youth Conference) will take place this November for high school and college youth. St. Anthony will be sending 14 young people and three adult chaperones to this year’s conference in Indianapolis. We would not be able to do so without the support of our wonderful St. Anthony parish, from financial help to prayers. The Men’s Club and the Knights of Columbus have also stepped up to assist, and we are so grateful. As many of you know, lots of the participants come back with a significant connection to their Catholic faith, and some have considered the conference a true life changer. There is a reason almost 25,000 attendees travel from all over the country to Indiana for this awesome event.

Youth Ministry News continued

Our young people participate in two fundraisers to help defray the cost of NCYC for their parents. The first was our famous Spaghetti Dinner that took place after Mass on Saturday, September 9, from 6:00 pm till 8:00 pm. The kids who will be attending NCYC assisted in food preparation, served food and drinks, and were on hand to chat and mingle with patrons who attended that evening. Thanks to everyone who took part to support our youth who will make the pilgrimage to Indianapolis in November!

The second NCYC fundraiser will be our Money Wall. You will find the Money Wall located between the Social Hall and Church from September 30–November 5. For those not familiar with the Money Wall, we will hang multiple enve-lopes with various ‘dollar denominations’ written on each envelope, such as $1, $5, $10, $20, $50 and so forth. Just select an envelope that matches your generous gift and fol-low the instructions on the envelope. For example, if you choose the envelope with $25, then you would enclose your NCYC gift of $25. Various NCYC attendees and parents will be stationed near the Money Wall after Masses to answer questions and/or accept donations. Thank you for your support and God bless!

In the upcoming weeks, Youth Ministry will be partnering with several of our very own parishioners who are excited to share their knowledge with our young people and teach them important life skills. Some mini-courses that will be offered are: Basic Sewing (how to mend clothes, sew on a button, etc.); Financial Tips (how to manage money, balance a checkbook, etc.); Self Defense (basic moves to stay safe!); and Cooking (for beginners). Please contact Stacy at 812-282-2290 for more information.

of state-mandated testing. When asked what sort of non- curriculum changes that stand out, they mentioned that tuition is handled much more formally these days than when they started. “We used to pay tuition by way of stewardship early on, meaning we simply gave our fair share through the Sunday collection at Church,” recalled Donna. Now the tuition payments are much more automated, like everything else. The physical St. Anthony complex has also changed a lot in the last 25 years, evolving from a smaller set of buildings into the expansive campus that students and parishioners enjoy today.

The most heart-warming and emotional memories Jeff and Donna have about St. Anthony School is how the teach-ers passionately rallied around Justin as he battled cancer during his 4th and 5th grade school years. Donna explained, “It was amazing; they not only bundled his homework and other curriculum every day during those years, but on many occasions they would bring his assignments to the hospital to review with him. Or they would just visit even when they weren’t bringing him homework.” Donna noted that the teachers would also help out the rest of our family by bring-ing food during that tough stretch, until Justin was blessed with a cure. The Burkes knew at that point that St. Anthony School was an incredibly special place.

Several teachers taught all four of the Burke kids, includ-ing Ann Whitworth, Cheryl Freund, Bridget Frank, Denise Lewis, Susan Huber, Nancy McGarvey and Janet Marlin. And then there is Sheila Noon; she not only taught or was the Principal for all four kids, but she also taught Donna in the 1970’s!

Donna and Jeff admit that it’s sort of sad not having a child at St. Anthony School this school year, but they cherish the memories. There were dozens of parent/teacher conferences over the years, lots of snow days or delays, countless extra-curricular activities, four First Communions, three Confirmations (and one to go), 25 year books, and so on. All in all, they feel their children received a top quality education along with a faith-based foundation that serves them well each and every day.

As the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end. The Burkes are regular attendees at St. Anthony Masses, so be sure to congratulate the family for their 25 year commit-ment to St. Anthony School.

Look no further than St. Anthony parishioners Jeff and Donna Burke if you want a parent’s perspective on just about any topic regarding St. Anthony School because they are definitely experts on the topic. After all, one or more of their four children have been enrolled at St. Anthony for 25 consecutive years—until their youngest child, Aaron, grad-uated a few months ago. Aaron, age 14, attended pre-school through 8th grade at SAS, just like his three siblings, Justin (29), Renee (26) and Hayden (16).

The Burke’s affiliation with St. Anthony began decades ago when Donna’s father, John Bolly, attended the ‘old’ school for three years, before graduating in 1952. Donna followed her father’s footsteps and became a mighty St. Anthony Bear herself, from Kindergarten through 8th grade, beginning in the 1970–71 school year, before moving on to Our Lady of Providence High School. Jeff and Donna got married in Jeff’s hometown of Charlestown, IN, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, and they called St. Michael’s their parish home for a few years. But once Justin came along, they began to think about schools.

“Jeff and I really wanted our kids to attend a school that offered pre-school through 8th grade, so we joined St. Anthony’s parish, and that’s how our St. Anthony School journey began,” noted Donna. Little did they know, that decision would be the beginning of their impressive 25 year streak that has included 5 Pastors, 4 Principals, and too many teachers and other staff to count.

The Burkes have seen a lot of changes through the years, such as how teachers approach curriculum and the addition
