SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR WEEK OF MAY 23, 2010

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS PRESENT AND WORKING IN OUR PARISH!

We can see the evidence of this in our community, because we are all from different backgrounds, cultures, races, languages and still we are one body in Christ. Pentecost Sunday is one of the most ancient feasts of the Church, celebrated early enough for St. Paul to write about it in the Acts of the Apostles (20:16) and his First Letter to the Corinthians (16:8). On Pentecost Sunday, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, they were granted the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Those gifts helped them to fulfill their mission to preach the Gospel to all nations. The example of the Apostles shows that the gifts will lead to the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Granted with the gifts of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost they were encouraged to speak the Good News to everyone. On that first Pentecost Sunday, over 3,000 people were converted and baptized. This was done through the assistance of the Holy Spirit. Pope Benedict XVI (Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger at the time) wrote a short article in which he reflects on the event of Pentecost as recounted in the Acts of the Apostles (See On the Way to Jesus Christ, pp. 131-141). He emphasizes the fact that the unity of Pentecost is a unity in which all the different peoples hear the Gospel in their own language. This is a unity in variety. The distinctive languages of these various peoples in Acts represent not just different ways of speaking but different cultures. The unity affected by the Holy Spirit is that we should not be all the same, but enjoying our uniqueness within the body of Christ. (Continued on page 7)

(Continua pagina 7)

FR. EDWARD O’CONNOR’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY/50TH ANIVERSARIO DEL PADRE E. O’CONNOR

PARISH PICTORIAL DIRECTORY DIRECTORIO FOTOGRÁFICO DE LA PARROQUIA

As many may know, our founding pastor, Father Edward O'Connor will be celebrating his 50th anniversary to the

priesthood on June 19, 2010. We are planning a celebration for him here at St Theresa on Monday June 7, 2010. He will

celebrate Mass at 5:00 P.M. which will be followed by his favorite "pot luck supper" in the parish hall. He is looking forward to seeing the parishioners of St. Theresa ~ especially those who began this parish with him. “Your presence is your gift". We

won’t take up a collection for a present (but, we cannot control an individual who wishes to give a card with an individual

gift). We will need help with the pot luck clean up at night's end. Please mark your calendars for this special event to honor

Father O'Connor on his momentous occasion. For more details, please call Rosemary Crockette, at 770 942-1422. Thank you for

any help you can provide. Hope to see you there!

THOUGHTS & MEDITATIONS (CON’T) PENSAMIENTOS Y MEDITACIONES When St. Paul speaks to the Corinthians about the gifts given to the community by the Holy Spirit, he is advising a divided Christian community to live and to worship as one community of faith. He speaks of the Spirit as giving different spiritual gifts to different people. These distinctive gifts should be acknowledged so that each person will have a role to play in the community. What does this have to do with us as we celebrate Pentecost Sunday? We need to listen to the voice of The Holy Spirit. Pentecost challenges us to open our hearts and minds and welcome even the strangers among us. We assume those gathered in Jerusalem for the first Pentecost were strangers to one another. But the gift of the Holy Spirit united them in a way that embraced their differences. For us to reject the stranger is contrary to the presence of the Spirit of God. We struggle with many differences in our Church today. More traditionalists we label as “pre-Vatican II” or more modern as “liberal”. We have different races, languages, customs, dress, and music. We need to listen to the Holy Spirit so that we may be able to build common ground among Catholics who think differently as long as they are following the teaching of our Holy Catholic Church. This Pentecost Sunday, the Holy Spirit draws us together in our parish as we celebrate the Eucharist. Throughout the world in the multicultural Catholic Church the Eucharist will be celebrated in many different languages and with different types of music and dress, but God will receive all our prayers and confer his graces to us all through His Holy Spirit, as on the first day of Pentecost. I am blessed to be able to serve you and I ask the Holy Spirit to continue to give me the wisdom and graces I need to be able to bring you closer to Jesus Christ. In addition when we are granted and infused with sanctifying grace, which helps us to live a Christian life, we are able to evangelize as the Apostles did on the first Pentecost. May God Bless You, Fr. Fernando Molina Restrepo, Pastor

(Hechos 2:2-4)

Que Dios los bendiga, Padre Fernando Molina Restrepo, Pastor
