How to Get Help:

Since all students are expected to work and participate every day in class (and make up work on days they are absent) it is important to know how to get help:

· Ask Mrs. Lind before or after school

· Go to Mrs. Lind’s website http://mrslind.weebly.com

· Email Mrs. Lind at: [email protected]

Grading:

Students are graded on a combination of:

·

· class participation

· appropriate behavior

· lecture/guest lecturer attentiveness

· projects

· labs

· tests/quizzes

· readings with questions/reflections

· video notes (appropriately paying attention)

· comprehensive final exam

Assignments:

· It is your responsibility to find out what you missed while you were absent.

· On the day you return to school (if not sooner), check the “Weekly agenda board”, and then ask a classmate or teacher if you need help.

· This should be done before or after class. Please do not interrupt the day’s lesson.

· You have one day for each day of excused absence to turn in your missing work.

· If you miss a test, you need to set up a time to retake the test with the teacher if your absence was excused. The test should be taken within one week of your return.

· There are some assignments/activities that cannot be made-up, so it is important to be in class.

· If have an excused absence on the day of a cooking lab, you may have a Homework Cooking lab to make up the lost points. You may only do this ONE time in the semester.

· All assignments for a unit are due the day they are assigned unless otherwise instructed. The day we have the unit test is the last day to receive credit for the assignment.

Tests/Quizzes/Labs and Final Exam:

· The majority of a student’s grade will come from a summative assessment at the end of each unit.

· Daily assignments, learning checks, etc. are intended to provide practice and assist in learning the required topics and benchmarks.

· Cooking labs are “hands-on” tests.

· Students will receive 20% of their grade from the final exam.

Extra Credit: Extra credit will occasionally be offered as it applies to Unit instruction. Extra credit Home Cooking Labs will be offered intermittently during the semester.

Cooking – Food Labs:

Cooking labs are the “hands on” test for Nutrition & Wellness. You will be graded on these days on your planning, preparation, cooking, time management, safety & sanitation, group cooperation, final product, clean up and following directions. There will be lab sheets that you will need to turn in on the day of the lab where you will evaluate your performance.

Cooking is not a guarantee in this class; it is a privilege. There are many topics of nutrition, basic skills, and safety that we must cover before we can cook. Cooking will begin in approximately 6 weeks and then occur every other week. We will have a lab planning day before we cook. Occasionally we will have free cook days. Each kitchen will be responsible for bringing in their own supplies on these days.

You must have at least a 60% (be passing) to cook. If you have missing work, you may not be able to participate in cooking labs; you will have to finish work first. If you are not cleaning up after cooking labs you will lose your cooking privileges.

If you are absent for cooking labs you will have to do a homework makeup lab to make up the points you have lost. You will be able to do ONE lab as a Homework Makeup Lab during the semester.

Classroom Cell Phone Acceptable Use Policy

· Students will only use their cell phone to complete assignments that are related to the instructional lesson when instructed to do so by the teacher.

· During other class periods, students will have their cell phones “out of sight” in a pocket, purse, etc. and follow the building policy for cell phone use. (Zones)

· Students will not send text messages or make calls to others outside of class.

· Students will not record any image, video, or audio of other students or the teacher/guests without permission.

· Students will not post any recordings or images to online websites without permission.

· Students will practice Internet safety with online resources, as well as abide by the Internet Acceptable Use Policy as found in the student handbook.

· Student will only send and post appropriate and authorized text, audio, and visual media only to websites approved by Holt School District.

· If a student needs to charge their cell phone they will bring it up to the teacher to plug in behind the desk.

· These rules apply to all other devices such as MP3 players, tablets, laptops, etc.

Students not following the acceptable use policy:

1. warning

Late Work Policy

Late work will not be accepted in this class unless you turn in a Late Work Pass ON THE DAY IT IS DUE (or before). Late Work Passes are not accepted AFTER the due date. This policy is being instituted in order to practice for the “real world” where employers, post-high school educational institutions (universities, colleges, training programs etc.) expect work to be completed and submitted in a timely manner.

· If you miss deadlines on the job, you will not advance in your position, get raises and may even be fired.

· If you turn in assignments late in college, most professors will not accept them and you will not get credit for it (even a few minutes late!)

· In the “real world” due dates happen even if you are absent, even if you are not feeling well, even if you are having a bad day, etc.

· In life after high school you need to take responsibility if you are going to be late and negotiate a new deadline (sometimes it’s not possible!)

Advantages to this policy

1. Grades are linked to learning not to behaviors (poor time management, disorganization, etc.)

2. It makes the entire process more manageable for both students and teacher (no worrying about reduced points, percentages off, etc.)

3. It builds life management skills by giving practice working responsibly with deadlines and negotiating for extensions.

When is work due?

· Unit work is due on the day of the unit quiz/test/culminating project. A tentative quiz/test date is given at the beginning of each unit (tentative due to unforeseen events—snow days, fire drills, technical malfunctions etc.).

· Due dates are announced verbally, are posted on the board, and on the daily agenda screen and sent via Remind.

· Projects and a few other assignments are either due same day completed or on a specific assigned date (example: movie note taking would be due on the day we completed the movie)

Late Work Policy

Options to Earn Credit:

· Turn in your work on time! You are given time in class to work on most assignments. If you do not complete something in class that was supposed to be done, it is homework. Classwork and homework is designed to teach you something from the learning targets (I Can…Statements) and will be covered on the tests/quizzes and final exam. Students who do their work generally do very well on tests/quizzes.

· If you are absent on the due date you may do one of the following:

· Email Mrs. Lind at [email protected]

· Ask for a 1 day extension for each day of excused absence(s)

· The email is due by the end of the school day (2:35 p.m.)

· Turn in a Late Work Pass before your planned absence

· The Late Work Pass is due before the assignment’s due date/your date of absence.

· If you are present but your work is either not complete, disorganized or you forgot to bring it:

· Turn in the Late Work Pass on the day the assignment is due in place of the assignment(s).

· List all assignments that will be late

· Fill in all sections of the Late Work Pass completely

· Negotiate a new extended due date with Mrs. Lind

· Turn in late work within the time extension given

· Only one extension will be given (no 2nd extension)

· Quiz/test reviews will not be accepted after the quiz/test due to the ineffectiveness of reviewing AFTER you take a quiz/test.

· Work due at the end of the term/semester will not be extended.

Late Work Policy

Will there be points deducted for late work?

· No, if you follow the absent or present procedures listed you will receive full points.

· Yes, if you do not follow the procedures listed above you will not receive any points on the assignment(s).

Following Written Directions:

It is very important that directions are followed to the last step and that you clearly understand what you are doing. An important unwritten step to any directions is that you are able to reason and think through what you are doing. To do this you must be able to check your work as you go along. This activity is designed to do just that.

1. Obtain a clean piece of paper

2. Fold the top right corner diagonally down as far as it will go to the opposite edge of the paper to make a triangle. It should line up perfectly with the left edge. Crease the paper sharply.

3. Fold the bottom strip up (the part not in the triangle and crease). Cut the strip off.

4. Open the paper and you should have a perfect square.

5. Fold the paper diagonally again to form the same triangle.

6. Position the triangle on the table with the long side at the bottom.

7. From left to right, label the corners of the triangle A, B, C.

8. Fold point C to approximately the middle of the edge of AB so that the top edge of the fold is parallel to the base of the original triangle. You should see three triangles.

9. Label the bottom point of the new triangle D. From left to right, label the top two corners of the triangle you have just made E, F.

10. Fold A to point F. You should now see four triangles. If not, go back two steps. Label top of the new the triangle G, H

11. Fold a single layer of side B down as far as it will go.

12. Tuck the single layer inside G, H

13. Turn this entire piece of folded paper over and lay it face down.

14. Fold the other single layer flap that shows down in front as far as it will go.

15. Write your name on the bottom edge.

16. If you have completed all the steps correctly, you should have a cup. If so, you may come to the teacher for your prize. If not try again.

***When you successfully follow the directions, go to the N&W Assignment Checklist page and put a in the “Complete” column.
