felt would never come about –it was all happening at thestart of the 1990s.

In the space of a few monthsNelson Mandela was releasedfrom the Victor Verster prisonnear Cape Town, gangsterepic Goodfellas wasnominated for six AcademyAwards and Michelle Pfeiffergraced the cover of Peoplemagazine’s ’50 Most BeautifulPeople in the World’ issue.

And who could forgetNothing Compares 2U, whichpropelled shaven-headed Irishsinger Sinead O’Connor to thetop of the charts, for a fullmonth.

It was also the year the firstgeneration Mazda MX-5, thecar that single-handedlyenergised the small andaffordable roadster market,was launched.

The timing couldn’t havebeen better and an audiencecrying out for fun, stylish,wind in the hair motoringmade it an instant success.

The pricing was pitched at acompetitive level, appreciablylower than its two key rivalsthe Lotus Elan and TVR S2,

and by the end of the year2,246 Britons had splashed thecash.

Twenty years on from theMX-5’s unveiling at the 1989Chicago Motor Show and anew sharper, leaner andgreener Mazda has joined theparty.

To mark the anniversaryMazda UK scoured thecountry for some earlyexamples, paying between£1,500 and £2,500 for 10 carsand putting them on the roadalongside the latest models.

A long and certainly one ofthe most beautiful drivingroutes in Britain – throughthe highlands of Scotland –afforded the chance tocompare the generations. Theoutcome was an eye-opener.

The 2009 Mazda MX-5 rangeof soft-top and roadster coupesports cars costs from £16,345,amazingly just £1,420 dearerthan the original.

You have the choice of 1.8 or2.0-litre engines, the latterboasting stability control anda new sound enhancer for amore throaty exhaust note.

And with its 12-second

operating time, the roadstercoupe has the world’s fastestpowered retractable hard top.

My test model also featureda new ‘PowerShift’ automaticpaddle-shift transmission,which adds to the fun factor.Plenty of punch – 0-62mph in8.2 seconds – and first classhandling resulted in anexciting, if polished, drivingexperience.

Time then to switch carsand hop behind the wheel of a1993 model with the original1.6-litre 116PS engine. Noelectronic wizardry here, eventhough it only takes a matterof seconds to unclip the lidand fold back the hood.

I can’t overstate what aterrific car this is to drive.Pure and engaging, it’s justwhat open-top motoringshould be about – and youaren’t faced with a confusingarray of buttons and switches,just the air vents, heatercontrols and a few dials.

Most surprising of allthough was that this modelhad already done more than143,000 miles and was stillgoing strong – a testament toMazda’s reliability.

Okay, with the hood down40mph feels more like 70 butthe sheer enjoyment andfabulous looks – few if anymainstream cars have aged so

well – make this a car you feelproud to be seen in.

Another swop, this time to a1992 special edition – therewere 13 limited edition modelsbefore the second generationMX-5 arrived in 1998 – andanother chunk of motoringmagic.

This one came with blackpaintwork and time-honouredtan leather interior, wood andchrome steering wheel,mahogany trim, uniquealloys, anti-lock brakes and amere 118,000 miles on theclock.

Everywhere we stoppedpeople came to look inside andchat about the car (not bad forsomething that cost just over£2,000 on the used market).

Then there was the scenery.Spectacular seascapes, misthovering over the mountaintops conjuring images of theMountains of Moria in Lord ofthe Rings, then the unspoiledbeauty of the remote RedPoint beach – apparently theQueen’s favourite.

It was a step back in timebut also a glimpse ahead,because if there’s anaffordable car futuregenerations are going tocollect it will probably be theoriginal Mazda MX-5. I’m onthe hunt.

Its predecessor was well knownfor “shakin’ that ass” and the latestSport Tourer is in the same mould.

With crescent-shaped rear lightclusters curving in from the wingsinto the tailgate, the new Megane isout to cut a dash.

Priced from £15,485 to £22,785, thenewcomer will be competing withestate versions of the Ford Focus,Vauxhall Astra and the Peugeot308SW.

The Renault undercuts its rivalsby a few hundred pounds and willbe available in four trim levelswhen it goes on sale in August.

All versions have electronicstability controls, air conditioning,a full set of airbags and come withthe option of Renault’s built-inCarminat TomTom navigationsystem.

While the plastic housingsurrounding the sat nav screen maynot look quite as swish as the rest ofthe interior, it does have theadvantage of being a theft- proofTomTom.

Auxiliary inputs for mobilemusic players are positioned at thefront of the centre console fore of

the gearlever, and, for an extra £350,an Arkamys 3D sound system withBluetooth phone connectivity canbe fitted.

As such, the Sport Tourer can bedecked out with state-of-the-artcommunications equipment for lessthan £1,000 – about half the priceyou’d expect to pay for suchonboard kit in other models.

That is a big plus point for the

new Renault, and so is the amountof room inside which makes it veryattractive as a mid-sized familyestate.

Cargo capacity is 524 litres,extending to a maximum of 1,600litres, and items up to 2.5 metreslong can be carried thanks to afolding front passenger seat.

The luggage blind can also beremoved and stowed below the boot

floor when not in use, which is ahandy solution.

The Sport Tourer puts theemphasis on being practical andfamily friendly. It’s also fairlyeconomical to run.

Of the four petrol and five dieselengines which will be available, themost economical is the 86bhp1.5-litre diesel, priced from £17,185,which can average a claimed

62.8mpg, with CO² emissions of118g/km, resulting in £35-a-yearroad tax for private buyers.

The best all-round performancecomes from a new two-litre diesel,developing 160bhp, which isavailable only in the top rangePrivilege models, costing from£21,785.

This version can average 47.9mpgwith emissions of 155g/km (£150 ayear tax) and has a top speed inexcess of 130mph, with 0 to 60acceleration of 8.8 seconds.

A 180bhp two-litre turbo petrol isalso included in the line-up, pricedfrom £19,585 in mid-rangeDynamique trim. That’s said tohave a top speed of 139mph, 0 to 60acceleration of eight seconds, butfuel consumption slips to around37mpg, with CO² of 178g/km.

On the road, the Sport Tourerexhibits no bad habits and, with thenew diesel, there is plenty ofmid-range acceleration and easycruising.

However, pulling away is not asbrisk as you would imagine from a160 horse power diesel.

Overall, of the 21 Sport Tourerversions which will be availablelater in the year, eight haveemissions below 140g/km, makingthe new model appealing to fleetusers as well.

Citroen C4 1.6i VTS Coupe

KEEPING a step ahead ofthe game has long been apriority for Citroen. Butthe French manufacturerhas never been afraid to

learn from or collaborate withothers either.

And it’s a pair of engines thatwere developed jointly with BMWthat are helping breath fresh lifeinto the company’s mid-size C4range.

The powerplants, 1.6-litre petrolunits producing either 120 or150bhp, are also used in the popularMINI Cooper and Cooper S and joina new 1.6 HDi diesel now availablein both the C4 hatchback and coupe.

These two body styles are asdifferent as chalk and cheese, yetindividually stylish in their ownright.

Much the more quirky, andavant-garde, is the coupe with itsswooping profile and angled rearwindscreen.

But mindful of the successfulimage of the latest C5 model,Citroen has given the car a curvier,more rounded bonnet andre-positioned the number plate for amore dynamic look while at therear there’s now a transparentcrystal finish to the lights.

The tested model, in top spec VTStrim, features the 150bhp TurboHigh Pressure engine which bringsdirect petrol injection andturbocharging to the C4 range forthe first time.

The result is more torque at lowengine speeds, lower fuel

consumption and CO2 emissionsplus increased power, all adding upto a coupe with some serious punch.

When it comes to feelgood factorinside the cabin the Citroen hasplenty to offer, as well as somebright ideas.

For instance the translucentdigital displays are readable in alllight conditions, including brightsunshine, thanks to its ability toautomatically adjust.

And the steering wheel’s fixedcentral hub has also enabledCitroen to raise safety levels withthe introduction of a driver’s airbagwhich more closely matches that ofthe driver’s body.

Mindful of the fact that motoristsspend millions each year on danglyair fresheners, the C4 boasts asystem of its own.

Every car comes with a box of inkcartridge sized containers that slotinto a hole next to the air vents, thenine fragrances including exotica

like jasmine, lotus and vanilla.All C4s are now well equipped,

the likes of an MP3 compatible CDplayer coming as standard, and theinterior has an upmarket feel.

On the downside the shape of therear windscreen is irritating as itrestricts rear mirror visibility andthere’s insufficient legroom for a

centre passenger.Overall though the revamped C4

remains a decent, cleverly designedcar, the new Airdream + specialedition making particular appeal at£13,895 with its plentiful kit, 92bhpHDi engine and 117g/km emissionsmeaning an annual road tax bill ofjust £35.

Buyers onalert as Fordannounces third price rise this yearTHE cost of the UK’s mostpopular cars is to rise for the thirdtime this year – and more pricehikes may be on the way.

Ford, which makes thebest-selling Ka, Fiesta, Focus andMondeo models, says it is beingcrippled by the weak pound andhas no alternative but to

increase prices yet again if itsbusiness is to survive.

The company is raising thecost of a new car by 4% followinga rise of 4.7% in February and afurther increase of 3.5% in April.This latest increase will add asmuch as £650 to the price of aKa, Fiesta, Focus, C-MAX, Kuga

and Mondeo, rising to an extra£700 in the case of the S-MAXand £800 more for a Galaxy.

Ford boss Nigel Sharp saysthat the weakness of the poundagainst the Euro means that thecost of making the average£15,000 vehicle has soared by£3,500, which with prices already

at rock-bottom because ofintense competition means theprospect of incurring a loss onevery car sold.

The only respite forconsumers is that dealers willprobably have some stocks ofunsold cars at pre-increaseprices.

THE concept of ECOnetic isthe new philosophy whichhas catapulted Ford into the“Green” limelight.

The company has taken ano-compromise approach in its bidto seriously tackle its responsibilitytowards the Eco agenda.

ECOnetic is about making Fordvehicles the cleanest, leanest petroland diesel vehicles possible. And, toachieve this goal it has scrutinised,modified and optimised everycomponent and part to effect areduction in both fuel and CO²emissions.

The full ECOnetic “package”includes optimised enginecalibration, low-rolling resistancetyres, changes to transmissionratios, inclusion of an optimumgear change indicator, as well astweaking air deflectors and honingspoilers to achieve the bestaerodynamics.

Even new low-viscositylubricants and lowered suspensionhave played a part in Ford’s bid toreduce the impact of its cars on theenvironment.

But the ECOnetic treatment isnot just reserved for the smaller,economic line-up, like the Fiesta.The Focus and Mondeo models alsobenefit. The Green Fiesta ECOnetic

1.6TDCi 90PS diesel unit can returna mind-boggling combined fuelfigure of 76.3mpg.

But the new diesel versions of theMondeo ECOnetic models, drivenrecently during Ford’s RoadshowTour around Britain, were prettyimpressive, too.

An estate version of the new,six-speed 2.0-litre 115PS brags acombined fuel return of 54.3mpg –and 139g/km CO².

Billed as the cleanest, greenestMondeos yet, the above estate ispriced at £22,045. During a briefdrive in Yorkshire last week, there

was no obvious dilution ofperformance from the “greeneffect”.

Ford confidently quotes theestate’s fuel economy rising to64.2mpg during motorway cruising,which provides a potentialcombined driving range of 800

miles. Arrival of the new MondeoECOnetic is good news for companycar drivers. The 2.0-litre enginegives access to a greater number ofcompany car lists, while its low CO²and competitive price ensure thelowest tax band in its class.

Family buyers will also find thelatest Ford Mondeo ECOnetic easyon the pocket, with its low CO²qualifying for Vehicle Excise DutyBand E (£120 a year) as well as animpressive driving range.

“Running costs are drivingpurchasing decisions, butcustomers do not want tocompromise to achieve lowownership costs,” explains Mondeobrand manager, Jon Gunn-Smith.

He added: “More people than everare recognising that ECOneticdelivers the right balance for them –and more Mondeo customers haveopted for ECOnetic in the first fivemonths of 2009, than in the whole of2008.”

CARS as cool as the Fiat 500convertible don’t comealong all that often. Theopen top version of thepopular retro model is on

course to become hot property thissummer.

On sale from today (July 3) andpriced from £11,300 to £14,100, thelittle 500C is out to cash in on ourlove affair with cute cabrios.

Since its launch last year the Fiat500 has become an instant hit torival the MINI with an accessorylist enabling buyers to join in thecraze of customising their cars.

The convertible moves itsdesirability up a notch. Not onlydoes the 500C look great it’s alsoreally fun to drive.

The fabric top is more of a fulllength sunroof than a foldawayhood, harking back to the original500 of the 1950s and the legendary

Citroen 2CV.Electrically operated it slides

back in seconds and can be openedor closed at speeds of up to nearly40mph.

The roof can be stopped at anyposition but its two main anchorpoints leave the cabin completelyexposed overhead with the rearwindow either up or dropped downto leave the back of the carabsolutely open.

However, the 500C is not withoutcriticism. There’s a lot of buffetingand noise when fully open and rearvision is compromised by the foldedhood and its integral third brakelamp being perched on top of theboot.

Even when only partiallyretracted there is booming inside at

anything over 45mpg. You could saythat’s all part and parcel of open topmotoring but rival convertiblessuch as the MINI, Nissan Micra andVW Beetle have got it right.

Fiat does offer a wind deflector asan option and perhaps it makes allthe difference.

With the roof closed the soundinsulation is good but you can pickfault in the detail.

The fabric seems slightly toonarrow at the windscreen endleaving a tiny, but noticeable, gapeither side. Apart from that the roofappears very durable and hardwearing.

Available in red, black or brown(Fiat calls it ivory) the hoodincorporates a heated glass rearscreen with a high level brake lampmounted in a colour coded plasticspoiler.

When open, the roof drops across

the top of the boot but to enableaccess to your luggage it partiallyretracts as soon as the boot handleis pressed.

Cargo capacity at 182 litres isslightly down on the standard 500but only by three litres, which isneither here nor there. The onlyother body change is a deeperwindscreen.

The 500C is available in two trimlevels, Pop and Lounge, and withthe same engine line up as thehatch – 1.2 and 1.4-litre petrols anda 1.3-litre diesel.

All models feature Fiat’s dualsetting power steering whichlightens up for city driving whileelectronic stability controls areavailable on the 1.4 versions.

The higher spec Lounge range –priced from £12,700 – has additionalchrome trim, automatic climatecontrol and parking sensors. With

the 1.3 diesel it’s the pick of thebunch.

It can average a claimed 67.3mpgwith emissions of just 110g/km,costing only £35 a year to tax.

The 1.2 also falls into the samelow tax bracket with emissions of119g/km but the quicker 1.4-litrehas a CO2 rating of 140g/km with46.3mpg.

As with the standard 500 theconvertible has plenty of optionsavailable including snazzy bodydecals and the rag top features someexclusive paint jobs with greatnames such as Ragamuffin red,Tech House grey and Goth-Metalblue.

That’s a bit of a giveaway aboutwhere Fiat is aiming theconvertible.

It’s a young, trendy car – and agreat fashion statement for thesummer.
