IT’S not often you get thechance to drive a mazy 30-mileroute around one of the world’sbiggest container terminals,then switch to a leafy, suburban

spin past some of the mostsought-after residences in Europe.

Such is the lot of light van man,in this case behind the wheel of aMercedes-Benz Vito, a vehicle thatbrings a combination of style, spaceand quality to the commercialvehicle scene.

This is an area of the automotivemarket that has seen the Germanmarque making a mightyimpression in recent times.

Van sales for the first half of 2010are up by a whopping 50 per centand earlier this summer Mercedesopened a new chapter in drivetechnology for light commercialswith the emissions-free VitoE-CELL.

Now comes another arrival in theshape of a comprehensively revisedVito range, featuring the first majorchanges in four years.

Mercedes chose the bustlingmetropolis of Hamburg with its2,500 bridges, lively waterfront area,inland lakes and vast parks as anideal location for the new Vito’slaunch exercise.

Vito’s a vehicle that fits the billnicely in that it bridges the gapbetween van and MPV in a classymanner.

The Dualiner and Travelinervans look smart and versatile, themore traditional and top sellingpanel vans very functional – and allsport a striking new face withprominent three-pointed star thatmelds the company’s passenger carstyling with the robust stance of acommercial vehicle.

Key to the new range, whichcustomers ordering now should seebefore the end of the year, is acompletely new drive offeringbetter economy and lower CO2,while all the engines comply withthe Euro 5 emissions standard.

Entry point is the Vito 110 CDICompact at £16,750 while the topselling Long version costs £17,080and the extended wheelbase ExtraLong a bit more again at £17,530.

The multi-purpose DuaIiner, withits two or three seats up front plussecond row of three, starts at £18,190for the 110 CDI Compact and thesame engine in Traveliner guise –seven or nine seats – costs £19,965.

Four diesel engines are available -the 95bhp 110 CDI, 136bhp 113 CDIand 163bhp 116 CDI all being fourcylinder units – with the 224bhp V6122 CDI topping the line-up.

Theaward was voted for by readers ofAuto Bild – the world’s largestautomobile magazine – so it’s avery prestigious award, high-lighting the Astra’s high regardacross Europe and beyond.

The Astra is undoubtedly afantastic piece of work, and we canbe proud that it remains a British-built vehicle. We can be prouderstill that the Astra is a local

concern, being built just over theMersey at Vauxhall’s EllesmerePort factory.

One of the country’s mostsuccessful car plants, the Vauxhallfactory is on a 440-acre site thatwas once an RAF station, and isrenowned for the Astras itproduces.

So how does one of those rathernice Astra hatchbacks come to be?

Well, first stop is the Press Shop,where huge coils of steel arepressed into sheets which areturned into body sides or doors.

Over in the Body Shop thevarious parts are finessed andjoined up. Then robots lift and jointhe sections, putting them onto amonorail system where they headoff through the production lineswhere the major parts are weldedtogether.

The monorail moves on throughthe Paint Shop and to the GeneralAssembly, where the car gets itsheart and the internal parts areinserted. Everything from theseats, dashboard, carpets and

headliners to the engine and fuel goin at this point, before the stringentquality control checks areundertaken.

One last test over the rollingroad and the Astra is signed off –another award-winner completed.

Production started in EllesmerePort back in 1962, and in 2005 theplant’s four millionth car rolled offthe line. Ellesmere Port has beenthe birthplace of some of the UK’smost popular models, beginningwith the Viva and including theChevette, the Vectra and all sixgenerations of the Astra.

The original Astra launched in1979, setting new standards ofcomfort, handling, build quality,performance and refinement for itsclass. The model that caused a realstir was the stunning GTE. Inbrilliant white, with a colour-codedbodykit, it helped launch the ideaof the hot hatch!

The Mark 2 Astra landed in 1984and the following year snapped upthe European Car of the Yearaward. The car grew in its third

generation, getting taller, widerand longer and improving its safetyfeatures dramatically.

In 1998 the Astra Mark 4 arrivedwith a Lotus-tuned suspension andthe addition of a stunning coupeversion. Then, in 2004, came theamazing Mark 5 which broughtnew levels of sophistication with itsbold, stylish design and refinedride and handling.

And the arrival of the sixthgeneration Astra model guaranteedat least another decade of work forthe 2,500 employees at Vauxhall’slocal Ellesmere Port plant.

THE sound of silence cansometimes be unnerving –even trick you into makinga flawed assumption. Itseems unreal to be cruising

down the road, albeit sedately, in afull-blown SUV without so much asa whisper from beneath the bonnet.

It’s a floaty feeling accompaniedby a silky smooth ride, but quite arelief when the engine kicks in andyou can actually hear something.

Such is life with the Lexus RX450h, a car that looks like a gasguzzler but is actually a hybridfeaturing an advanced blend ofpetrol and electric power.

What makes this parallel set-upso impressive is that it allows thecar to operate exclusively in petrolor electric mode, or in acombination of both.

At start-up the electric motordrives the vehicle and will continueto do so if you potter slowly alongsuburban roads or down a gentleslope. You hear nothing and,worryingly, no one hears you.

The bonus though is that thereare no exhaust emissions.

In more everyday conditions thepetrol engine is used and underheavy acceleration the power of thehybrid battery is added to that ofthe engine via the electric motor.

When you stop, whether it be attraffic lights, a junction or in yourdriveway, the petrol engine stops.

And here’s where you can becaught out. I spent a minute sortinga few bits from the passenger seatand door bins, so by the time I gotout of the car I had forgotten that Ihadn’t switched off because therewas no sound.

The RX heralds the secondgeneration of Lexus Hybrid Drivewith a 10 per cent boost in engine

power over its predecessor and aclaimed best-in-class fuelconsumption of 44.8 miles pergallon.

That said, over 414 miles ofvaried driving – which included two100-mile plus motorway trips – Ionly averaged 28.8mpg.

You can’t knock the technologythough, nor the way this big sportsutility vehicle performs.

The RX drives beautifully, butthen it has been specifically tuned

for the European market and comeswith electronically controlledfour-position air suspension.

There are three new drivingmodes – Eco, Ev and Snow – gearedto improve fuel efficiency andperformance, the Eco settingallowing the car to be driven onelectric power alone.

Inside, it’s leather-clad luxury allthe way with the plush SE-L trimwhich gives you the likes ofmemory function for the front seats,

illuminated scuff plates, keylessentry, LED headlamps, sideparking monitors and a top notch15-speaker sound, DVD and sat-navsystem.

Every model is highly specifiedthough and all come with advancedsafety technology includingpre-crash safety, adaptive cruisecontrol and 10 airbags.

Space in the back is both ampleand comfortable for three adultsand there’s also a large boot.
