THE love affair between Britsand sports hatchbacks orsaloons is an enduring one –especially when it comes tofast Fords.

There have been lots of them,from the Escort RS2000 of the early1970s through the Fiesta XR2 andEscort XR3 models of the nextdecade and on to the explosiveFocus RS Mk 2 of more recenttimes.

The most fiery version of thelatest Focus generation is therecently launched Zetec S, and ithas been developed specifically forUK drivers.

While several engines comeunder the Zetec S banner, it is the1.6-litre 180PS EcoBoost petrol thatputs some serious punch into thecurrent Focus – which will remainthe most powerful in the line-upuntil the ST model arrives in thesummer.

Based on the existing Zetec

version, the S adds a full sportsstyling kit including front and rearspoilers with lower sill extensionsand 17-inch alloy wheels togetherwith sports suspension, sportspedals, rear LED tail lamps andPower start button.

With the turbocharged 1.6EcoBoost under the bonnet theFocus can scorch from 0-62mph in7.9 seconds and on to 138mph.

It also carries Ford’s ECOnetictechnology badge, which means thecar benefits from auto start-stop, agear shift indicator, active grilleshutter and smart regenerative

charging.The upshot is Combined cycle

fuel economy of 47.1mpg, terrific fora car of this type, though my own,largely urban, average was almost adozen short of that figure.

Technology is certainly the nameof the game with the new Focus andits level of refinement, comfort andadvanced features that you wouldnormally associate with thepremium German brands. That’show far the blue oval brand hascome in the past few years.

Comfortable, simply laid out, wellbuilt and spacious to boot, it’s hardto find fault with the Focus. And thewell balanced feel you get frombehind the wheel is lifted to a newlevel in the case of the Zetec S.

Stiffer suspension and the torquevectoring which balances power tothe driven wheels combine to makethis a truly rewarding car to drive,with a touch of snarl from theexhaust for good measure.

Zetec S prices are £1,250 higherthan the equivalent Zetecderivative, though Ford stressesthat the car’s additional featureswould add more than £1,700 ifbought separately.

There are also options, the testedmodel featuring a Driver AssistancePack for an extra £1,000 thatcomprises Active City Stop, Lane

Departure Warning, Lane KeepingAid, Traffic Sign Recognition,Driver Alert, Auto High Beam andBlind Spot Information System.

But the Focus is highly specifiedas standard with the likes ofBluetooth with voice control, DABradio/CD player, air-con, caplessrefuelling, curtain airbags andelectric windows on every car.
