Sleek, low slung and packed with techno wizardry the A7 Sportback is a super coupe that blends style with space. Barely a month seems to go by without the German manufacturer announcing a new car derivative – there have already been a dozen this year – and this latest arrival takes Audi’s range to 35 models with a staggering 740 variants. It’s an expansion that, combined with massive financial commitment, has seen the marque leapfrog its executive class rivals in recent times. Audi gets quite precious about other car makers using the word premium, believing that too many imposters are claiming their latest models fall into that category. Stuff or nonsense, what’s certain is that the A7 Sportback is a premium car with a capital P. It’s also a niche product, the company expecting to sell 3,000 a year – all of which will be built to order. There aren’t many cars that can be named as genuine rivals to the A7, the Mercedes-Benz CLS and BMW 5 Series GT perhaps being the most likely, so it is sure to have plenty of exclusivity appeal. And with prices ranging from £43,755 to £49,860 for a line-up that, depending on model, is quicker, more economical and cheaper to run than the opposition, the Audi is well placed to nab the limelight. From launch on January 8 there will be a choice of four engines – 2.8-litre FSI with 204PS and 3.0 TFSI with 300PS petrol plus a pair of 3.0 TDI diesels producing 204 or 245PS – and SE and S line trim grades. Of the quartet only the front wheel drive, lower power diesel doesn’t feature Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system, instead using the company’s multitronic automatic transmission as opposed to the quattro’s seven-speed twin clutch S tronic box . This model is the most economical in the line-up boasting an average 53.3 miles per gallon and CO2 emissions of 139g/km. It was the higher powered models that were available to test on the launch exercise though, and of the two the supercharged petrol version is much the more rewarding to drive. Both are extremely refined, well balanced, show terrific poise through bends and in time-honoured Audi fashion, feel superbly engineered. Also of high order is the A7’s sound insulation, but then it needs to be because among the extra cost options is a Bang & Olufsen advanced sound system that costs a whopping £6,300. Upmarket gadgetry is everywhere in this car, from a night vision camera and internet ‘on the go’ to parallel parking – not new to the industry but a first in a car of this size – and a head-up display. Speccing the car up is very tempting, and doesn’t come cheap. For instance the 3.0 TDI quattro SE model I drove was fitted with 20 individual options, adding an extra £25,765 to the tab. Stuff like the night vision with pedestrian detection, head-up display and ventilated seats that can perform a massage are sophisticated enough but it’s the £2,050 Technology Pack that takes the biscuit. Central to its appeal is the sat-nav linked to Google Earth complete with display that can zoom in to 30 metres to provide an amazing real world view of the surrounding area. If you predicted something like this a decade ago people would have thought you were barmy. There’s also a smart phone link to the Internet that turns the car into a Wi-Fi hotspot for passengers with laptops. And whether you happen to be the driver or just there for the ride, the experience is top notch because apart from being an eyecatcher in profile, the A7 has a sumptuous interior with ample rear head and legroom for two tall passengers. There’s also a long but shallow boot that can cope with a useful 535 litres of clobber and that can be boosted further thanks to folding rear seats. It all adds up to another string in Audi’s fast expanding bow – or as the German company likes to describe it: Executive travel with a new slant.
