Motivation is a psychological act which attracts the workers to do more work and instigates, lithe workers are instigated, they will try to do more than the standard work and earn more for themselves which increases their living standard.

• Primary Needs They are inborn needs. They serve to fulfill

the biological functions. They are also known as biological needs. They include needs such as food, water, air, shelter, temperature control, rest and relaxation, sleep, elimination of body waste, muscular activity, sex, etc.

• Safety and Security Needs These are the needs of person’s self

preservation and for the preservation of those who are dependent on him.

They refer to avoidance of danger, harm from physical environment, protection from animals, clothing, warmth, financial security, protection from old age, unemployment, poverty, war, diseases, etc.

• Social Needs

These needs are acquired by leaving or

adopting, by experience, from friends, parents and others. Social needs are the need for companionship, belongingness, and the esteem of others . They are concerned with one’s relation with others. They are mostly cultural bound.

• Self-Fulfillment-Self Actualisation Needs

Need to accomplish or achieve in life, like

to be creative, to develop new ideas, to meet challenges, etc.

Incentives are of two kinds:

• Financial Incentives It is necessary to have an adequate

compensation programme that will attract and retain key people of superior calibre in the organisation. Monetary compensation can be used to reward significant achievement made by them.

• Non-Financial Incentives

Money is not the only motivator of human behaviour in terms of need hierarchy, it can help to satisfy only the physiological needs of the person.

The psychological needs for safety or security can be satisfied by the psychological climate or environment of the workplace.

Sufficient policies should be laid down regarding promotion to generate continued motivation of the employees. Promotion refers to assignment of a position of greater responsibility or increased authority to an individual. An adequate promotion policy giving effective motivation would be one which offers the employee a career within the organisation itself.

The satisfaction derived by a person from from his job and work is called job satisfaction. Job means work allotted to a person. The people are doing different jobs to earn livelihood.

JOB ENRICHEMENTJOB ENRICHEMENT

It presumes that many jobs are so highly specialised that operative workers can no longer visualise hoe their work contributes to the organisation’s goals. Job enrichment is a procedure of redesigning work content to make job more meaningful and enjoyable by involving employees in planning, organisation and controlling their work.
