Asiatic Boy (Arg) (Not for Sale {Arg}) will break fromthe four hole when he attempts to go one better thanhis runner-up effort in 2008. Rider Kevin Shea wasupbeat about being drawn inside Albertus Maximus. AIthink he is maybe a doubtful stayer at the 2000-meterdistance, and he=s going to be tested now from barrier

10.@ Casino Drive(Mineshaft) blew outfor the 10-furlong testyesterday morning. Hisfinal furlong was timedin :11.80. AOur horseis an experienced trav-eller, so he=s not hadany problems with thistrip at all,@ said exer-cise rider NaruhitoKasai. As for expecta-tions for Saturday,

Kasai offered, AThere is no Curlin type of horse in thisyear=s field, so if he does not have any problem with hishoof like last year when we had to scratch from theBelmont S., we have a big chance.@ The chestnut coltdrew post eight. AThat was a very, very good position,@said Nobutaka Tada, racing manager for ownerHidetoshi Yamamoto. AThe exact position that I wasexpecting. The performance will be down to the horse, and not me of course, and he is doing great.@

Prince Khalid Abdullah=s Spanish Moon, a three-timelisted winner in Britain last year, schooled in the start-ing gate after a gallop yesterday morning. AHe can be alittle quirky and likes to do things his own way,@ saidTeddy Grimthorpe, racing manager for the Prince.AWe=ve always thought a lot of this horse, but he=s hadhis problems, particularly at three. But he had a prettysolid year last season.@

As for how he will fare in his Group 1 bow,Grimthorpe commented, AThis is his biggest task todate, but his preparation has gone to plan, and heseems to run well fresh. He won first time out at two,and last year, so hopefully he=ll run his race.@ The five-year-old will be making his first start since taking theFloodlit S. on the Kempton all-weather Nov. 5. SpanishMoon will exit stall four Saturday night. AFour is grand, but it is never that important in a mile-and-a-half race,@Grimthorpe commented. AI=d like to think we=ll finish inthe first four, but ifyou come hoping forfourth, you=ll end upseventh, so we=rehere to try and win.@The aptly namedFront House, heroineof the G2 Dubai Cityof Gold over courseand distance Mar. 5,has drawn the insidepost. AIf someone wasto take it up, we=ll box seat just like Sun Classique lastyear,@ said rider Kevin Shea. AAnd if no one wants tolead, I=ll make the pace and they just won=t get pasther.@ Trainer Mike de Kock gave Shea a leg up aboardSun Classique (Aus) (Fuji Kiseki {Jpn}) for last year=sedition.

by Sid Fernando Three horses bred in Argentina by Haras La Quebradawill make their next starts on Dubai World Cup day atNad Al Sheba Mar. 28. Godolphin=s My Indy (Arg)(Indygo Shiner--My Light {Arg}, by Southern Halo),winner of the G3 Maktoum Challenge, Rounds 1 and 2,this year; and Prince Faisal bin Khaled bin Abdul Aziz=sMuller (Arg) (El Compinche {Arg}--Martina Girl {Arg}, byMat-Boy {Arg}), winner of the Custodian of the TwoHoly Mosques Cup (King=s Cup) at Janadriyah in Saudi

Arabia, will face off in the $6-million G1 Dubai World Cup.Prince Sultan Mohammed binAl Kabeer=s filly So Shiny(Arg) (Indygo Shiner--Sorpresiva {Arg}, by SouthernHalo), winner of the UAE1000 Guineas at Nad AlSheba last month, will take onthe boys in the G2 UAEDerby, a $2-million event. Byany standard, this is a remark-

able international achievement for La Quebrada, whichhas been the leading stud farm and breeder in Argentinafor the last 30 years, but now is in a transitional phaseafter the death of its owner, Hernan Ceriani Cernadas, two years ago. ANow my sister [Maria Ines] and I own the farm,AHernan=s son, also named Hernan Ceriani Cernadasafter his father and grandfather, said recently. AI am incharge of all the management and direction, and MariaInes helps me at the office. Iam still working with thesame people--the same team--that my father had. Thisteam is headed by veterinar-ian Dr. Horacio Houssay andhis staff, and it is also impor-tant to recognize the effortsof Rafael Garabento, who hasbeen in charge of the estab-lishment for the last 45years.@ The transition from fatherto son and daughter has been made easier by the suc-cess of La Quebrada=s A.P. Indy stallion Indygo Shiner, who had three first-crop Classic winners in Argentina in2008. Indygo Shiner is at Hill >n= Dale in Kentucky forthe current Northern Hemisphere breeding season. Thestallion was a parting gift from their father, who yearsearlier had established some of the best stallions inArgentina by purchasing and standing U.S.-bred horsesagainst the then-prevailing fashion for European-breds. www.coolmore.com

Nowadays, La Quebrada is the trendsetter, and theleaders on the Argentine general sire list today aremostly U.S.-bred stallions. The dominant stallion in Argentina over the last 15years has been La Quebrada=s U.S.-bred Southern Halo(Halo--Northern Sea, by Northern Dancer), the sire of atleast 155 stakes winners. In fact, he=s the commonthread in the makeup of My Indy, Muller and So Shiny. His son El Compinche (Arg) is the sire of Muller, and hisdaughters produced My Indy and So Shiny. Still activeat 26, Southern Halo led the leading sires list for eightconsecutive years, from 1994 to 2001, and then againin 2003 and 2007. For the last five years, he=s alsobeen the leading broodmare sire in Argentina, and hisdaughters are proving to be particularly successful withIndygo Shiner, whose 10 stakes winners to date in-clude seven out of Southern Halo mares. In the U.S.,where he stood for a time, Southern Halo is bestknown as the sire of More Than Ready, who also hasmade a name for himself as a sire in Australia. Southern Halo was purchased by the late HernanCeriani Cernadas, who took over the farm in 1973 uponthe death of his father. He had established La Quebradain the mid-1940s in Pilar, about a half-hour outside ofBuenos Aires.

It was actually the eldest Hernan Ceriani Cernadaswho first started the practice of injecting U.S.-bredspeed horses into Argentine pedigrees by importing theU.S.-bred sprinter Make Tracks (Eight Thirty), in 1953,later followed by U.S.-bred Solazo (Beau Max). Solazo=sLa Quebrada-bred champion Gold Sun, by the way, waschampion Cigar=s second dam. When the second Hernan Ceriani Cernadas took overLa Quebrada in 1973, he, too, was aided by his sister, and together they continued importing U.S.-bred stal-lions to Argentina, most notably Logical (Buckpasser)and Salt Marsh (Tom Rolfe). The biggest catch for La Quebrada and Argentina, however, was breed-shaper Southern Halo, and there=san interesting story about his fortuitous purchase. AMy father had seen him running at Santa Anita, andhe had caught his eye when he won by a big margin,@said Cernadas. AHe saw him from the side, but didn=tget a chance to see him in great detail. He was ownedby Stavros Niarchos, the Greek magnate. My fatherasked him for a price in 1987, but he appeared inacces-sible. AHowever, my father kept following his career overtime, until he was seriously injured. As soon as hefound out, he flew to California. Upon his arrival, hehad only one hour before the [Niarchos] office wasclosed.@ Cont. p7

AHe was told there were other people interested, andhe had to say right away if he would buy him or not.He decided to buy him sight unseen--he had not seenhim since the Santa Anita race. He said when he finallysaw the horse three months later he was totally disap-pointed because the horse looked nothing like at theSanta Anita race--he was just skin and bones with theplaster on his leg. He said he would not have boughtthe horse had he seen his condition first.@ Bred by Canadian E.P. Taylor, the breeder of suchinternationally significant stallions as Northern Dancer,Nijinsky, Storm Bird, Vice Regent and Northern Taste,Southern Halo is inbred 3x4 to Almahmoud--the seconddam of Northern Dancer. The stallion is particularlynoted for getting early-maturing, physically impressiverunners with speed who can stay as far as 10 furlongsunder the right conditions. And his daughters are nowbecoming outstanding producers who will help theyounger stallions at La Quebrada get off on the rightpath, as has been the case with Indygo Shiner. ALa Quebrada has one of the best-quality broodmarebands in the world,@ says Diego Mitagstein, editor ofboth Turf Diario and Revista Palermo Blanca. AAnd LaQuebrada has a great stallion roster, with horses likeSouthern Halo, Indygo Shiner, Luhuk, Mutakddim andgreat prospects like Russian Blue, a very nice Danehillson, and the Storm Cats Grand Reward, The Leopardand Easing Along.

The farm is doing great, still, because the same peo-

ple are running it. And young Hernan had the best

teacher possible--his father. If he can translate all the

things he has learned, La Quebrada will grow even

more.@

And one significant area of growth for La Quebrada--

and South America--has been the Middle East, where

it=s now commonplace to export the best runners from

South America to the United Arab Emirates or Saudi

Arabia. If the three La Quebrada-bred runners perform

well at Nad Al Sheba, the transitional phase of La

Quebrada will continue seamlessly.

Chocolate Candy, a Craig Family homebred, had beenbased up at Golden Gate, but headed south after goinga mile in 1:41.20 last week. AI wasn=t satisfied with the

way he did it up there,@Hollendorfer explained.AThat=s why I wanted togo a mile here, to see ifthe Golden Gate trackwas dead that day, which it was. I startedhim off too fast up there, and went slower today, and [Joel] Rosario did anexcellent job. We wentslow the first part, thefirst eighth in :13.66, andthen :25.91, and he fin-

ished up really good, so that=s what we were lookingfor.@ Hollendorfer indicated that the bay colt wouldlikely blow out a half-mile Tuesday. Take the Points(Even the Score), runner-up to The Pamplemousse inthe GIII Sham S. Feb. 28, will pass on the Santa AnitaDerby in favor of the GI Toyota Blue Grass S. the fol-lowing week at Keeneland. Laragh to Return in Comely... Grade I winner Laragh (Tapit) will make her three-year-old bow in the GII Comely S. at Aqueduct Apr. 11,Daily Racing Form reports. The IEAH colorbearer hasnot faced the starter since capturing the GI HollywoodStarlet S. Dec. 13. She had been pointing for the GIAshland S., but IEAH did not want her to clash just yetwith the operation=s champion Stardom Bound (Tapit).AShe's doing wonderful and on target at the momentfor the Kentucky Oaks [May 1]," trainer John Terranovatold DRF. AOriginally, we were going to send her toKeeneland for the Ashland, but with Stardom Boundheading in that direction we decided to keep the two ofthem separate for now since both fillies are owned, inpart, by IEAH Stables.@ Terranova added, AThe timing ofthe Comely is great for her. It's also a one-turn mileand, with her speed, it looks like the perfect race tobring her back." Laragh worked five-eighths in 1:01.00at Palm Meadows last Saturday and boarded a NewYork-bound van the following day.

Eastern Tent Caterpillars Numbers on the Rise? The University of Kentucky Equine Initiative is report-ing that the number of eastern tent caterpillars could beon the rise after the hatching season has begun. Thecaterpillars were linked to the Mare Reproduction LossSyndrome of 2001-2002, during which an estimated 30percent of the Thoroughbred foal crop was lost. APopu-lations of the eastern tent caterpillar have increasednoticeably over the past three years,@ said LeeTownsend, University of Kentucky College of Agricul-ture entomologist. AWhile infestations of the magnitudeseen during the 2001-2002 Mare Reproductive LossSyndrome outbreak are not anticipated, it is clear thateastern tent caterpillar populations are on the upswing, and could be heavier than normal in some areas. As-sessments and management decisions can be made in afew weeks as the silvery, baseball-sized tents start toshow up on branches.@ Entomologists at UK are recom-mending that Aunless horse farm managers have beenaggressive in managing eastern tent caterpillars, orremoving host trees, they should keep pregnant maresout of pastures bordered by cherry trees or other hostsfor the next several weeks.@ For more information, goto www.ca.uky.edu/equine.

We continue to offer an improved product andthis year just turned out to be a buyer=s market." In all,199 juveniles sold for $1,736,700, making the average$8,727. MURTAGH KEEN ON THE MASTER Johnny Murtagh yesterday gave an upbeat bulletin onDerrick Smith, Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor=s mainG1 2000 Guineas contender Mastercraftsman (Ire)(Danehill Dancer {Ire}) following Sunday=s racecoursegallop. Last year=s G1 Phoenix S. and G1 National S.winner was one of three Ballydoyle sophomores putthrough their paces by Murtagh after racing at TheCurragh. AThey got a bit tired on the heavy ground, butwe have a lot of nice three-year-olds, unexposed,@Murtagh told PA Sport. AHopefully, there will be achampion amongst them. They will now have to go tothe trials--I suppose the horse everyone talks about isMastercraftsman, a dual Group 1 winner. I rode him atthe Curragh last week and he is in good form. He hasfive weeks to the 2000 Guineas now and that shouldbe about right. Rip Van Winkle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) isanother one this year who is very exciting and ofcourse Fame and Glory (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}), who wonat Saint-Cloud last year. They are the three everyoneknows about, but hopefully, we have some dark horsesthat have won their maiden or have run well as two-year-olds.@

ARB ANNOUNCES NEW RULES Sweeping changesto whip use in Australia will take effect from Aug. 1this year, with only padded whips to be used in racesand official trials. The Australian Racing Board has alsoannounced new rules on the circumstances in which awhip may be used, the way it is used, and an educationcampaign for riders. Stockwhips have been bannednationally. ARB Chairman Bob Bentley said the changesshowed racing Afully attuned to contemporary commu-nity expectations.@ Bentley added, AThere is no pointfiddling around the edges and procrastinating where isindustry and public expectations that practices of thepast are no longer condoned. There are a lot of thingsthat society condoned 50 years ago, but which are nowseen as unacceptable, and this is one of them.@ He saidother racing jurisdictions would closely monitor Austra-lia=s use of padded whips. Using an action that raisesthe arm above shoulder height is banned and a whipmay not be used more than five times before the 200-meter mark, and after that point, not in consecutivestrides.
