PHOENIX RISING EMERGESWITH A >FLAME=
by Perry Lefko
For a smalltime breeder in the Canadian province of British
Columbia, Deborah Holmes is having a hard time believing that
one horse she bred and sold is on the road to the GI Kentucky
Derby and another is on the path to the Queen's Plate.
The victory by John Oxley=s Flameaway (Scat Daddy) in
Saturday=s GIII Sam F. Davis S. has thrust him into the Derby
picture, even though he is not yet nominated to the American
Triple Crown. He is, however, eligible for the Canadian Triple
Crown.
Another horse Holmes sold, Silent Sting (Silent Name {Jpn}),
had a strong freshman season in Canada for Stronach Stables,
winning two of four races, including the Kingarvie S. in
December, and is considered a strong prospect for the Plate.
Theoretically, Holmes--a part-time accountant whose breeding
business is called Phoenix Rising Farms--could have two horses
in the Plate. Not bad for a crop of six foals produced by her
broodmare band three years ago. She bought two more mares
last year.
"Six was a big crop for us and some are going to Classics?" she
asked with amazement. "It's beyond anything I could have
imagined. How does that even happen?"

Flameaway (left) and Silent Sting as foals | Gail Wood
Phoenix Rising Emerges with a >Flame= cont. from p1
Flameaway was nicknamed Hercules as a foal, while Silent
Sting was called Caesar. They were both born in Hillsburgh,
Ontario at Gail Wood's Woodlands Farm, and it was Wood who
gave the colts their early
monikers because of their size.
Holmes credited her success to
John Penn and George William
Smith. Penn does her
confirmation analysis and raises
her U.S.-based horses at his
family's Pennland Farm in Paris,
Kentucky. Smith, a Canadian
pedigree expert, has a company
called The Matchmaker.
"My plan in this business is to
surround myself with experts,"
Holmes said. "That's why I'm
with the Penns. That's why I
have George Smith advising me.
That's why I have Gail Wood. She
has downsized farms and now I'm with Susan Foreman. I work
with the best. I have John Penn look at every mare before I buy
them and make sure I'm not missing something on the physical
side, and I obviously couldn't have bred such good yearlings
without my pedigree guy.
"I put in place good people. I can go to sleep each night
knowing my horses are in good hands. I breed the best I can
possibly afford to the best. But
there's always luck. There has to
be luck. I mean, come on, there
are very rich people in this
business that do exactly what
I'm doing that don't have a
Derby and a Queen's Plate
contender this year. So, of
course there's luck. It takes a
team. I make the final decisions,
but I rely on the expertise of all
these horsemen and
horsewomen to make the right
decisions."
Of the six yearlings from the
same crop as Flameaway and
Silent Sting, two were foaled in
British Columbia, two in Ontario and two in Kentucky. Four of
the six foals sold for $100,000 or more.

Flameaway sold for $150,000 as a Keeneland January short
yearling and was re-sold for $400,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Saratoga
yearling. Silent Sting sold for $150,000 as a Keeneland
September yearling. The unraced Gatlinburg (Uncle Mo), a
$100,000 KEEJAN short yearling, was subsequently sold for
$525,000 at Keeneland September. Meanwhile, El Corazon
(Quality Road), a $100,000 KEESEP yearling, won a maiden
special weight at Laurel as a 2-year-old.
The other two horses are the British Columbia-breds Titus
Command (Second in Command) and Starresha (Second in
Command). The latter attracted a lot of attention at Woodbine
in 2017 because of her interesting coloration. She has brown
spots on her body, brown ears and a tail that is mostly black.
Registered as a paint and a Thoroughbred, the filly has her own
Facebook fan page.
Holmes also bred Seguimi (Victor's Cry), who co-topped the
Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society's yearling sale last year
with a price tag of $85,000. The colt is a half-brother to
Flameaway.
Silent Sting is a half-brother to the 6-year-old Grade I-winning
mare Celestine (Scat Daddy), whom Holmes sold for $100,000
as Keeneland September yearling in 2013. A high-priced RNA as
a juvenile, she ultimately stamped herself as a top-class
racemare with a victory in the 2016 GI Just a Game S. and
subsequently sold for $2.55 million at Keeneland November
later that year.
Sadly for Holmes, Mona Mia, the dam of Celestine and Silent
Sting, died giving birth to the latter, who was born by a
caesarean section. Mona Mia, who had a tumor under her tail,
had been diagnosed with melanoma and Holmes and her team
were researching for potential treatments--one of which was
identified in California. It was a month before the mare was
scheduled to foal, so the decision was made to wait.
"We had no idea she had internal tumors and the thought is
that one of them ruptured and that's why she couldn't get the
foal out," Holmes said. "She was in deep distress and she was
going to die. There was no saving her. It was awful, truly
awful...We saw the external, but we didn't have any idea the
extent of it inside. That was my first grey horse that had cancer
and it was very sad. A few years later we would have had a
treatment for it."
The year before, Mona Mia foaled a filly by Second in
Command that died the day after birth because of a virus. Mona
Mia subsequently developed colic and had to be rushed into
surgery. A month afterward she was bred to Silent Name and
got in foal on the first cover, eventually producing Silent Sting.
"He was really a miracle baby," Holmes said. "Do you know
how much I regret that the Second in Command filly died? That
would have been one of my broodmares." Cont. p5

Holmes said the death of Mona Mia, whom she bought
privately in foal in Kentucky for $18,000, and the foal that died
after birth are part and parcel of numerous tragedies she has
experienced as a breeder. After various accidents and mishaps
with both broodmares and foals, Holmes said she has learned to
accept the highs and lows that come with breeding horses.
"I'm grateful for every baby that's born safe and healthy,"
Holmes said. "When I first started breeding horses and these
things happened, I almost quit. It's so painful to lose a horse that
you love. But you pick yourself up and dust yourself off and you
just have faith that better days are
ahead."
Among Holmes=s successes on
the racetrack is Goldstryke Glory
(Second in Command), now an
8-year-old mare, who raced 19
times in Ontario and banked
almost $320,000.
Holmes said she transitioned her
accounting duties to a part-time
capacity because the horses are
starting to pay for themselves and
she wants to devote more time to
her breeding business.
"It used to be that my accounting practice could pay for my
horses, but I've far eclipsed that now," Holmes said. AHorses are
way too expensive for the accounting to support them. They
need to support themselves. My husband, who is a lawyer, is
awesome, and he said I'm retiring in June. He wants me to enjoy
life. I'm just going to be a horse breeder.
"To be honest, there have been times when the horses' cash
flow has not been [strong] and he stepped in and loaned me a
little bit of money. That's why I sold Flameaway and Gatlinburg
early. I didn't have enough money to bring this herd forward and
those two were very saleable. I paid back my husband the
money he loaned me and went forward--and from that I was
able to sell Silent Sting and El Corazon in September.@
After starting out in the breeding business in 2000 and going
through some tough times, she decided to hire Penn and Smith
and hatched the idea of Phoenix Rising Farms with the goal of
figuratively rising from the ashes.
"When I did Phoenix Rising Farms and got serious about it in
2007, the accountant side kicked in and I knew I had a limited
amount of time to figure out how to make money in this
business," she said. "I was losing money left, right and center. I
said we're either going to do this right or we're not going to do
this at all. We're producing stakes winners at a pretty high clip
now...We have some valuable
broodmares and young stock right
now, including Flameaway's dam
and his yearling half-brother as
well as a 2-year-old half-brother
to Gatlinburg selling in the Ocala
April sale, just to name a few. If
we chose to cash out and sell
everything, we would definitely
show an overall profit for the
horse business from day one.
However, since I have no intention
of leaving this business, the
journey continues.@
As a small breeder, Holmes has a specific strategy that includes
the expertise of horse people and a voracious reading appetite
to learn as much as she can about pedigrees and stallions.
"In my world, I'm always looking for a potential pitfall in a
breeding and then I'm trying to find the stallion who doesn't
have the pitfall because I'm always breeding six or eight mares a
year," she said. "My husband sometimes complains about all the
time I spend on it, but I love it. I absolutely love everything
about it. I would rather spend a day in a pasture with a couple of
my mares and foals than go to a spa."

158 Catalogued for Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale cont. from p1
ASince conducting our first sale at Gulfstream in 2015, the
racetrack success of our graduates has been nothing short of
remarkable,@ continued Browning. AIn just a short time,
Gulfstream grads have claimed many of the sport=s biggest
races, including the [GI] Kentucky Derby, [GI] Breeders= Cup
Juvenile, Florida Derby, Met Mile, [GI] Del Mar Futurity, and
both the [GI] Futurity and Starlet S. at Los Alamitos.@
The catalogue is now available online and will also be available
via the Equineline sales catalogue app. Print catalogues will be
available from Fasig-Tipton offices by Monday, Feb. 19.
CASSE LOOKING AHEAD AFTER BIG
WEEKENDby Christie DeBernardis
It was a very good weekend for trainer Mark Casse with two
graded stakes victories and a pair of nice maiden winners,
including a ATDN Rising Star@ performance from Telekinesis
(Ghostzapper). The conditioner is already planning ahead for his
weekend scorers as well as hoping for another successful
Saturday with two talented fillies entered in the GII Rachel
Alexandra S. at Fair Grounds.
Casse=s newly-crowned champion turf male World Approval
(Northern Afleet) carried his win streak into 2018 with a half-
length score in the 1 1/16-mile GIII Tampa Bay S. Saturday
(video). The GI Breeders= Cup Mile hero was under
consideration for Dubai, but Casse said they would bypass the
carnival and stay in America instead.
AGoing back and watching the replay and the gallop out, I
know he was a little short going into the race, but that was not
Grade I company that he beat,@ said Casse. ASo, given that, we
just think it is a smart idea to keep him home and keep him at a
mile. We are flirting with the [GI Frank E.] Kilroe Mile [Mar. 10 at
Santa Anita] and the [GI] Maker=s 46 Mile [Apr. 13 at
Keeneland].@
The Indiana native continued, AI decided that [going to Dubai]
was just pushing it. A mile is his best distance and to go and try
to run almost a mile and an eighth against the best in the world
is not fair to him. Johnny [Velazquez], Mrs. Weber and I talked
about it the following day. Johnny agrees a mile is his game and
Mrs. Weber agrees with that, so we are not going to push it. We
are going to focus on a mile. I am not saying he can=t run further
than a mile, but it is [a] proven fact for him that a mile is his
game for his best performance.@
World Approval=s victory was the second straight graded win
of the day for Casse, who captured the GIII Sam F. Davis S. one
race prior with Flameaway (Scat Daddy) (video).

The John Oxley colorbearer won an off-the-turf renewal of the
GIII Dixana Bourbon S. last term, after which he returned to the
grass, finishing eighth in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf
Nov. 3 and annexing the Kitten=s Joy S. Jan. 6.
AHe is going to the [GII] Tampa Bay Derby [Mar. 10],@ Casse
said. AHe won on the turf and there really isn=t a whole lot out
there for turf, so Mr. Oxley said, >Would we consider running
him on dirt again?= I said, >Well, let=s see how he trains and if he
trains good, we will try it.= And, he did, so we did.@
Casse was also represented by GIII Endeavour S. runner-up La
Coronel (Colonel John) at Tampa Saturday. He is pointing that
talented turf distaffer to the GII Hillsborough S. there Mar. 10.
While those runners have already proven to be talented stakes
horses, Casse unveiled a 3-year-old colt who appears poised to
join their ranks in Telekinesis. Originally scheduled to make his
debut in New Orleans Jan. 28, the $470,000 KEENOV buy was
scratched after flipping over in the paddock, but made up for it
Friday with an impressive 3 1/4-length graduation.
AHe is extremely talented,@ Casse said. AI am not sure what we
are going to do with him, but we think he is a future star. I
haven=t come up with a second race yet, but probably two
turns.@
Casse had another 3-year-old colt hint at his future potential in
He Takes Charge (Tapit), who bobbled at the start and raced
wide, but still came home a 2 1/4-length winner at Gulfstream
Saturday (video).
Off the board in his first two tries on turf, the $625,000 KEESEP
purchase finished in the money in his last two attempts on the
dirt in Hallandale prior to his graduation. The gray=s second dam
is blue hen and MGISW Take Charge Lady, who produced
champion Will Take Charge (Unbridled=s Song) and GISW Take
Charge Indy (A.P Indy).
AHe Takes Charge to me is the diamond in the rough,@ Casse
said. AI think he did everything wrong. He acted poorly before
the race. He acted poorly in the paddock. He acted poorly in the
post parade. He was up and down and all around in the race. He
pulled himself up when he made the lead and still ran an 82
Beyer. I think he has a bright future. We just have to get him to
focus more.@ Cont. p8

While he did not win his last start, Mississippi (Pioneerof the
Nile) has flashed his talent in his last three races and is poised to
take a crack at the GI Kentucky Derby trail for the Casse barn.
Earning his diploma at second asking at Churchill in November,
the $700,000 FTFMAR buy checked in second behind
undefeated ATDN Rising Star@ and GII Risen Star S. contender
Noble Indy (Take Charge Indy) in a Gulfstream allowance
Jan. 11. He missed by just a neck last time in Hallandale Feb. 4,
but finished 9 1/4 lengths clear of the third-place finisher.
AHe is probably going to go to the [GII] Rebel [S. at Oaklawn
Mar. 17], but I don=t know for sure yet,@ Casse said. AI thought
his last race was good. He is learning. I want to try and get him
on a racetrack that is not as speed biased as Gulfstream can be,
so that is why I am going to take him out of there.@
Casse has a pair of sophomore fillies set to take their next
steps towards the GI Kentucky Oaks this Saturday in MGSW
ATDN Rising Star@ Wonder Gadot (Medaglia d=Oro) and
GI Darley Alcibiades S. winner Heavenly Love (Malibu Moon).
ABoth of them are good,@ Casse said. AThey are sitting on top
races. We will just find out if they are good enough. It is not an
easy race, but we are ready.@
MATT SHIRER, Trainer
As part of a new series, we asked a number of people not born
into racing families why they got into the sport, and what their
first racing memory was.
Why did you get involved in the sport?
I was an animal science major in college, and I was also a
competitive person who played sports, so racing was a good
combination for me, wanting to do something that blended the
two. I was late to the racing game, anyways--I was in my 20s
before I ever got to the track, which is a lot different than many
other people who end up doing it through family.
What is your earliest racing memory?
The first Derby I really followed was the year Giacomo (Holy
Bull) won in 2005. I remember Smarty Jones (Elusive Quality) a
year before that, but I only caught that at the end when he was
going for the Triple Crown. Cont. p9

You get to see the Derby on TV, with all the pageantry, and it

me want to be a part of it.
We used to go to the Ohio Derby. I=m from around Cleveland,
so we=d go up there to watch races. I had no idea what was
going on at the time, but I remember being there thinking this is
pretty interesting.

AAEP URGES CAUTIONCNOT ALARMCFOR
EHV-1 OUTBREAKSby T.D. Thornton
Turf Paradise in Arizona Feb. 12 became the fifth
Thoroughbred track in the country since the start of the new
year to have a quarantine imposed because of a confirmed case
of equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1).
But what appears to be a recent spike in outbreaks should not
be mistaken for a nationwide EHV pandemic, an official with the
American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) cautioned.
Rather, the apparent spate of EHV reports could just be a
function of the AAEP=s Equine Disease Communication Center
making outbreak information more readily accessible to the
media and the general public, Dr. Nathaniel A. White II, DVM, a
chair of the AAEP=s National Equine Health Plan Task Force, told
TDN Tuesday.
The more robust recent reporting via the EDCC=s various
public-facing platforms, which began sending out real-time
alerts in 2016, can make it difficult to drill down precise EHV-1
prevalence comparisons with years prior to the implementation
of the alert system, White said.
AIt can happen at any time of the year, but it seems like this
winter or early spring we=ve seen more outbreaks than during
the rest of the year,@ White said. AI=m not sure we know that it=s
increased, because the reporting systems [previously] were not
in place to keep track of every case in the country. That=s
changing with the EDCC. We=ve been able to capture that. But
this is [traditionally] the season where we see the most of it.
A[EHV-1] is called >reportable,=@ White explained. AThat is, the
state veterinarians, when they have a case in their state, if it=s
reportable in their state they=re obligated to look at the case
and try to keep it from spreading.
Cont. p10
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 10 OF 10 • THETDN.COM WEDNESDAY • FEBRUARY 14, 2018
Turf Paradise | Coady Photography
ABut until we started the EDCC, there was no central reporting
system,@ White continued. ASo I think that we=re able to capture
more of them now and know that they=re happening, whereas
before [an outbreak could occur]
and [the state] would just take
care of it and nobody outside that
state would necessarily know.@
Since January, EHV-1
quarantines have been imposed
and subsequently released at
Belmont Park in New York, Laurel
Park in Maryland and Portland
Meadows in Oregon. A barn
remains under quarantine at
Turfway Park in Kentucky after a
3-year-old was euthanized
following an EHV-1 diagnosis
there.
Standardbred entities have also
been affected. Racing at The
Meadows in Pennsylvania has been shut down since late January
through at least Feb. 23, and The Blooded Horse Sales Company
in Ohio canceled an auction this month.
Also according to the EDCC, the University of Pennsylvania=s
New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania had a state EHV-1
quarantine lifted effective Feb. 3, but a self-imposed quarantine
remains in effect at that facility for three horses that previously
tested positive.
The Turf Paradise quarantine is
for the Awild@ strain of EHV-1 and
traces to a horse that presented
with neurological impairment
Feb. 8 and was moved to a
referral hospital. One barn at the
racetrack has been quarantined
while the state veterinarian works
with track officials to monitor for
exposed horses.
APeople should be aware that
[contracting EHV-1] is possible,
but considering the total number
of horses, it=s probably not that
prevalent,@ White said. ABut it
certainly can happen, particularly
when horses travel and they=re very active and stressed, and
people should practice biosecurity, which is the best way to
prevent their horses from getting the problem.@

BREEDERS= CUP INCENTIVE BILL PASSES KY
HOUSE by T.D. Thornton
A bill to incentivize the hosting of the Breeders= Cup World
Championships at Kentucky tracks by waiving the state's excise
tax on live pari-mutuel wagering for the event passed the
Kentucky House of Representatives by an 83-4 vote Feb. 12.
The Blood-Horse first reported the passage, quoting the bill=s
sponsor, David Osborne (R), the acting Speaker of the House, as
hinting that the legislation could have a role in getting Churchill
Downs named to a permanent rotation of Breeders= Cup host
tracks.
APassage of this measure will place Kentucky on competitive
ground with other states and venues... A permanent incentive
from Kentucky will send the right message,@ Osborne told the
Blood-Horse.
HB 259 would make permanent the tax break measure that
was put in place prior to Keeneland Race Course=s hosting of the
2015 championships. That incentive expired at the end of 2017.
A fiscal explanation that accompanied the bill noted that
AChurchill Downs will host the event in November 2018. It has
been reported that a four or five-year site rotational plan will be
announced soon. Both Keeneland and Churchill Downs have
each hosted the event in the past and both Kentucky tracks are
most likely to be considered in the rotation beginning in 2019.@
If the bill is approved by the Senate and gets signed into law,
the explanation sheet cited $375,000 in negative fiscal impacts
for 2018-19: Thoroughbred Development Fund ($187,500),
General Fund ($87,500), University of Louisville Equine Industry
Program ($50,000), Kentucky Racing Commission equine drug
testing ($25,000) and Higher Education Equine Fund for horse
programs at state universities ($25,000).

VA HOUSE PASSES HISTORICAL RACING
by T.D. Thornton
A bill to legalize historical race gaming machines passed the
Virginia House of Delegates on Tuesday by a 79-21 vote and now
advances to the Senate for further consideration.
The Feb. 13 passage of HB1609 represents the latest--and
strongest--attempt to revive Thoroughbred racing in Virginia,
which has not hosted a commercial Thoroughbred race meeting
since the 2013 summer season at Colonial Downs.
Revolutionary Racing, a Chicago-based company, has emerged
over the past several months as a potential buyer of Colonial
Downs, and the company has made it clear that the deal hinges
on the legalization of some historical race gaming legalization.
Revolutionary Racing is headed by chairman Larry Lucas, an
entrepreneur who formerly served as chairman of YouBet.com,
and president Prentice Salter, a management services specialist
who most recently led the development of a country-wide
network of 63 off-track betting facilities in the Dominican
Republic.

Compelled hadn=t sprinted since finishing third on debut at
Saratoga in August of 2016, and she hadn=t been seen since a
runner-up effort in Pimlico=s Hilltop S. last May, but the well-
bred filly overcame all obstacles to best a strong bunch in this
Fat Tuesday feature. Well out of it while saving ground early, the
Glen Hill homebred switched out for clear sailing near the
quarter pole and mowed down longtime leader Triple Chelsea
late to score going away. Flashy multiple graded stakes winner
Finley=sluckycharm edged into second after sitting off the pace.
Compelled crushed fellow Florida-breds in Gulfstream Park
West=s Juvenile Filly Turf S. in 2016, and her three-race
sophomore season included a close second in Gulfstream=s GIII
Sweetest Chant S. and third in Tampa=s GIII Florida Oaks.
Compelled=s second dam is French Group 1 winner Macoumba
(Mr. Prospector), perhaps best known as the dam of top sire
Malibu Moon and also the granddam of GSW and sire Temple
City (Dynaformer). Dam Mutually Benefit, stakes-placed going 1
3/8 on the Del Mar turf for these connections, was a $675,000
KEESEP buyback in 2008. She has an unraced 3-year-old filly
named Speightstown, and visited that stallion again in 2017.

The Jockey Club Denies Stud Book Privileges to Three Trainers:
One trainer has been denied all privileges of The American
Stud Book for 10 years, one for five years, and one for two years,
The Jockey Club announced Tuesday. All actions became
effective Jan. 1, 2018. The denials of privileges include the
privilege of registering foals and the privileges of any
registration process for any Thoroughbred.

determined to have violated racing statutes, rules or regulations
relating to prohibited or restricted drugs, medications or
substances in a Thoroughbred. The violations occurred at
Charles Town Racetrack Mar. 19 and 26, 2016.
Ricardo Murillo was denied privileges for five years for the
same violation, occurring at Charles Town Racetrack Sept. 28,
2016. Mario Serey Jr. was denied privileges for two years for
violations occurring at Parx Racing Apr. 3, Dec. 5 and 6, 2016;
and at Penn National Nov. 23, Dec. 2 and 3, 2016.

Zoffany was one of three sires in Europe to cover
200-plus mares last year | Coolmore
PLENTY AT PLAY IN THE NUMBERS GAME
By Emma Berry
In order to avoid the almost certain disappointment of not
receiving a Valentine's card for the 48th year running, I shall be
leaving the country, but in my temporary absence there will be
plenty of activity in Newmarket and beyond as the 2018
covering season gets underway.
According to Weatherbys' recently released supplement to the
Return of Mares for 2017, there were plenty of stallions who
found no difficulty in attracting huge numbers of partners last
year and two shared equal billing at the top of the table. Their
names should come as no surprise.
Dark Angel (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) was Ireland's busiest flat
stallion, with 223 mates, a number matched in Britain by Frankel
(GB) (Galileo {Ire}). Their own sires are still very much alive and
kicking, and Acclamation was sent 149 mares, a number which
puts him behind another of his sons, Mehmas (Ire), on 187.
Meanwhile, Dark Angel's sons Gutaifan (Ire) and Estidhkaar
(Ire), winner of the G2 Champagne S. and a half-brother to
Toormore (Ire) (Arakan), were kept busy at Yeomanstown Stud
and Tara Stud, covering 152 and 143 mares, respectively,
prompting a significant boost to Try My Best's branch of the
Northern Dancer line.
Zoffany (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) was the only other stallion in
Europe to cover in excess of 200 mares and has some quality
support among the quantity, including Rain Flower (Ire) (Indian
Ridge {GB}), the dam of Dancing Rain (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire},
who has visited him in both of the last two years.
Incorporating figures from France's Repertoire des Etalons, 26
stallions standing in Europe covered 150 mares or more--a total
of 4,562 mares between them. It's up to each individual breeder
to decide whether or not they want their mare to be among a
large book, and the high numbers of stallions having retired to
stud in Europe over the last few years should mean that there's
more choice. In reality it's likely to mean that the unproven sires
that excelled over sprint distances are well supported--at least in
their first season--while stallions who can be relied upon to give
young mares a good start at stud but don't quite boast the
X-factor of Galileo (Ire) or Dubawi (Ire) are increasingly shuffled
to the bottom of the pack.

Even before some of his offspring revealed themselves to be
pretty talented individuals, Dabirsim (Fr) (Hat Trick) was fully
subscribed in 2017 and was France's top stallion numerically
with 197 mares. Judging by comments on the recent Route des
Etalons, it will be a similar story this year. Those breeders who
don't make the cut for Dabirsim may well consider his
stable-mate Martinborough (Jpn), another grandson of Sunday
Silence, but this time by the great Deep Impact (Jpn). Despite
being relatively unknown in Europe last season, the half-brother
to the dam of G1 Japan Cup winner Cheval Grand (Jpn) (Heart's
Cry {Jpn}) covered 72 mares during his first season at Haras de
Grandcamp in 2017.
Siyouni (Fr), undoubtedly the most exciting stallion son of the
celebrated Pivotal (GB), also played his part in a resurgence of
numbers in France, covering 189 mares at Haras de Bonneval,
while the first book of Shalaa (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), which
included the mighty Treve (Fr) (Motivator {GB}), stood at 156,
just one more than Le Havre (Ire) (Noverre), whose star remains
in the ascendant. There's plenty of excitement surrounding the
first runners for Shalaa's fellow Haras de Bouquetot resident
Olympic Glory (Ire) (Choisir {Aus}) this season and he was the
most active of France's young bucks last year, avoiding any third
book-angst when covering 160 mares.
With 196 suitors in 2017, the juvenile record-breaking Kodiac
(GB) ensured that he was still the kingpin at Tally-Ho Stud
despite some stiff opposition from his upstart stablemates
Mehmas and Vadamos (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}). The latter, along
with Maxios (Ger), appears to give us the best chance of
ensuring that the great Monsun is not remembered principally
as a sire of National Hunt sires. Andreas Putsch's homebred
covered 183 mares, putting him slightly ahead of Camelot (GB)
(Montjeu {Ire}) on 179 and Galileo on 178. Along with hefty
support from the O'Callaghan family, Vadamos has also received
votes of confidence from an array of major breeders, including
the Aga Khan, the Tsui family, Newsells Park Stud and Airlie Stud.
Now 16, the G1 2000 Guineas winner Footstepsinthesand
(GB) (Giant's Causeway) more than holds his own at Coolmore,
where he covered 191 mares last year. Along with Shamardal,
who is carefully managed by Darley and whose 63 mares in 2017
were all owned either by Godolphin, Shadwell, Rabbah or Sheikh
Mohammed Obaid, he does an important job of keeping Storm
Cat's flag flying in Europe.
Fortunately for breeders, Shamardal has at least one very
exciting son at stud, and Lope De Vega (Ire) covered 163 mares
at Ballylinch Stud last year at a career-high price of i50,000.
That figure has since risen to i60,000, but it seems unlikely that
his support will wane. Lope De Vega's young son Belardo (Ire)
didn't lack suitors, either, with 122 signed up in his first season.
Galileo covered just three more mares than his half-brother
Sea The Stars (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), whose 175 matched
Coolmore's busiest first-season stallion, The Gurkha (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}). Another son of Galileo, the dual Derby winner
Australia (GB), who has first runners this season, covered 154
mares, while Pride Of Dubai (Aus), a son of the much-missed
Street Cry (Ire) out of a mare whose half-sister produced the
perennially popular Kodiac and Invincible Spirit (Ire), wasn't far
behind his fellow Coolmore resident on 153.
On the Darley roster, Mr. Prospector's great-grandsons
Dubawi (Ire) (Dubai Millennium) and Iffraaj (GB) (Zafonic) were
busiest of all, covering 174 and 171 apiece, while the shuttling
half-brothers Epaulette (Aus) (Commands {Aus}) and Helmet
(Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) retained a decent level of
support with 154 and 150 mares each. Cont. p3

Plenty At Play In The Numbers Game Cont.
Fast Company (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) moved from his
original base at Rathasker Stud to serve one season in Britain at
Overbury Stud in 2016. But then up popped his Classic-winning
daughter Jet Setting (Ire) and so did his fortunes. A move back to
Ireland, this time to Kildangan Stud, saw him cover 162 mares.
Kingman (GB) (Invincible Spirit {GB}) has a big year ahead of
him as members of his first crop are readied for their racecourse
debuts. The brilliant miler posted a whopping yearling average
of ,244,000 from 37 sold last year, which will have been music
to the ears of the owners of the 168 mares to have visited him.
If At First... There was a certain amount of angst surrounding the loss of
two proven stallions from Britain's flat ranks to the Irish National
Hunt division in 2016, when Mount Nelson (GB) (Rock Of
Gibraltar {Ire}) left Newsells Park Stud for Boardsmill Stud, and
Juddmonte's Champs Elysees (GB) (Danehill) transferred to
Castlehyde Stud.
Both stallions are still perfectly capable of siring a top-class flat
performer sent the right mare, but there is no arguing that the
moves have been lucrative.
From 54 mares in Newmarket in 2016, Champs Elysees leapt
to covering 241 in Cork, while Mount Nelson served 210 at the
Flood family's Boardsmill Stud from a low of 22 in 2016. His
versatility was there for all to see last year when Penhill (GB)
won the G1 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham
Festival and Librisa Breeze (GB) won the G1 QIPCO British
Champions Sprint, both for the same lucky owner, Tony Bloom.

Incidentally, Bloom also owns one of Champs Elysees's biggest
flat winners of last season, the Cesarewitch hero Withhold (GB).
Despite those high numbers, Champs Elysees and Mount
Nelson were far from the busiest of the National Hunt brigade.
The only horse to exceed the 300-mark, and by quite some
margin, was Galileo's son Soldier Of Fortune (Ire), who started
his career at Haras du Logis St Germain in Normandy. During his
final season there in 2015, he was sent 22 mares but he will
have had to up his game considerably in the covering shed at
Beeches Stud, where he was asked to perform with 341 partners
last year.
Soldier Of Fortune's surging popularity has done his
half-brother Affinsea (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) no harm. The Jim
Bolger-bred and John Oxx-trained winner of a Roscommon
maiden joined Ronnie O'Neill's Whytemount Stud last year and
covered 123 mares.
Meanwhile, another repatriated stallion, Walk In The Park
(Ire), who, along with Motivator helped Montjeu to a Derby
one-two in his first crop, is now hot property at Grange Stud. He
returned to Ireland in 2016 having stood in relative obscurity in
France until the top-class jumpers Douvan (Fr) and Min (Fr)
came along. His 2017 book included 216 mares.
FEBRUARY SALE OPENS IN DEAUVILLE The Arqana February sale began in Deauville on Tuesday with
an increased clearance rate of 78% for 157 broodmares, fillies
and short yearlings. The aggregate was i990,500, the average
i6,975 and the median i4,000. Because the sale was expanded
to two days this year, comparisons will be published after
Wednesday=s second session.
Tuesday=s session was topped by a trio that made i37,000
apiece. Two of those were flat offerings. The 10-year-old stakes-
winning mare Glory Power (Ire) (Medicean {GB}) (Lot 148) was
sold not in foal, the buyer listed as anonymous. Later in the day,
Alban Chevalier Du Fau went to the co-topping price for a
yearling colt by Wootton Bassett (GB) (Lot 199) from the
extended family of Bago and Maxios.

SESSION TOPPERS
BOOM FACTOR IN CLASSIC BOOK TWO Red hot first-season sire Spirit of Boom (Aus) provided three of
the top five lots during the inaugural Book 2 of the Inglis Classic
Yearling Sale on Tuesday. All three were consigned by the
McAlpine family=s Queensland-based Eureka Stud, which bred,
raced and stands the sire, propelling the operation to be leading
vendor. Spirit of Boom had five total sell on the day for an
average of A$135,000. Eureka enjoyed a 100% clearance rate,
its six all sold for A$707,500 and an average of A$117,917,
making it the leading vendor for both those categories.
A total of 157 yearlings were sold on Tuesday for A$7,051,500
at a clearance rate of 88%. The average was A$44,914, and the
median A$35,000.
Topping trade was Eureka=s Spirit of Boom filly out of the
Group 2 winner Laurinel Argie (Aus) (Palace Music), who was
picked up by Hopefull Unit Trust for A$200,000. Lot 761 is also a
half-sister to the Group 3-placed Rustic Melody (Aus) (Snitzel
{Aus}).
Spirit of Boom received a vote of confidence from the
powerful China Horse Club/Newgate/WinStar trio, which went
to A$150,000 for the first foal of the unraced Snitzel Express
(Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) (Lot 628), and a short time later Singapore
trainer Shane Baertschiger, under the moniker of SDB Racing,
spent the same amount on another Spirit of Boom colt (lot 634),
this one out of the Anabaa mare Stylized (Aus), the dam of four
winners from five to race.
Spirit of Boom leads the Australian first-season sire standings
by winners and stakes winners, with nine and four apiece. He
sits second to Zoustar (Aus) (Northern Meteor {Aus}) by
earnings, that one=s two winners headed by the Magic Millions
2YO Classic winner Sunlight (Aus).
Trainer Richard Freedman spent A$155,000 on a son of Sepoy
(Aus) (Lot 612), while Arrowfield=s Smart Missile (Aus) colt, lot
689, looks to be headed to Hong Kong after being picked up by
Upper Bloodstock for the same price.

MELBOURNE CUP PURSE TO INCREASE The purse for the G1 Melbourne Cup will increase this year,
AAP reports, but the Victoria Racing Club has not revealed how
much. The 3200-metre race, which was this year worth
A$6-million, will also be sponsored by Lexus, which takes over
from Emirates Airlines, beginning this year.
VRC Chairman Amanda Elliott said the move is not in response
to Sydney=s announcement that The Everest will this year be
worth A$13 million for its second running.
"It's not about a competition," Elliott told AAP. "We don't do
anything in response to what happens across the border.@
Trainer Gai Waterhouse, winner of the 2013 Melbourne Cup
with Fiorente (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}), said, "I don't know if they
have to increase their prize money any more. It's a lot of prize
money and people come from all over the world to be able to
win that prize money and take away the coveted prize."
"Four or five million looks pretty good when you win it, I can
tell you,@ Waterhouse added. "We paid a lot of money for
Fiorente when we bought him. When we ran second [in 2012]
on the first Tuesday in November he paid his purchase price,
running second.@
AGE OF FIRE TO CAMBRIDGE STUD
Te Akau Racing=s Age of Fire (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}--
Dragon=s Tail {Aus}, by Galileo {Ire}), a winner of the G1 Levin
Classic and runner-up in the G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas, will
stand at Cambridge Stud in New Zealand upon his retirement, Te
Akau Racing=s David Ellis confirmed on Te Akau=s website.
Brendan and Jo Lindsay, who will take up the reins at Cambridge
Stud in April, secured an ownership share in the bay, who will
stand alongside fellow Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards
trainee and G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas hero Embellish (NZ)
(Savabeel {Aus}). A winner of three of his six starts for earnings
of $203,178, the son of Coolmore Australia=s champion sire
Fastnet Rock will arrive in Sydney next week for an Australian
campaign.
AAs an athlete, this colt is one of the very best: he is as good a
moving horse as you will ever see, athletic and strong, he floats
over ground with a terrific action; has a superb attitude and
most importantly--he possesses a real will to win,@ said Ellis of
his A$400,000 Inglis Easter yearling purchase.

PAKISTAN STAR PASSES FINAL EXAM, SET
FOR HK GOLD CUP COMEBACKER by Alan Carasso
Pakistan Star (Ger) (Shamardal) handily defeated former Hong
Kong Horse of the Year Werther (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) in a
1600-metre barrier trial at Sha Tin Racecourse Tuesday morning,
the final hurdle ahead of a presumptive green light from the
Hong Kong Jockey Club for a return to racing in the G1 Citi Hong
Kong Gold Cup (2000m) Sunday week.
As has been well documented, the >TDN Rising Star= pulled
himself up when heavily favoured in the G3 Premier Plate H. last
June and again in an October trial, earning himself a ban from
the local stewards after stopping at the same spot on the track
each time. The Tony Cruz trainee was >sentenced= to a spell and
would only be allowed to return if able to prove that he was
over his antics. Having successfully completed a pair of jump-
outs, Pakistan Star defeated stable companion Romantic Touch
(Aus) (Northern Meteor {Aus}) in a Feb. 6 barrier trial and
Tuesday=s specially arranged heat was to be his final hurdle.
Drawn gate five in a field of six, Pakistan Star--who has had his
fair share of issues in the stalls--jumped without incident once
again and settled in second, just off the flank of Werther, the
G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup runner-up who will face Pakistan
Star in the Gold Cup. Shaken up by Joao Moreira with a quarter
mile to travel, the bay quickened up nicely through a final 400m
in :22.3 and pulled away to score by 3 1/2 lengths (video). Last-
out G1 Stewards= Cup hero Seasons Bloom (Aus) (Captain
Sonador {Aus}) ran on well for third and will stretch out to the
mile and a quarter for the Gold Cup.
With Moreira committed to Seasons Bloom, Matthew
Chadwick will regain the mount on Pakistan Star. The locally
born jockey rode the gelding to improbable wins in his first two
career starts, but was beaten at long odds-on in his next three
runs.
AIt is going to be like getting on a different horse because
when I rode him he was so immature, he hadn=t even grown
fully,@ Chadwick told South China Morning Post. ANow you can
see how much bigger he is. He carries himself in a different way
with that stature he has. As much as I would like to think I know
him mentally, how he feels physically and how he races will be
completely different.@
Pakistan Star=s two tries over the 2000m have resulted in
runner-up efforts in the Hong Kong Derby and in the G1 Queen
Elizabeth II Cup. While those efforts were the better part of a
year ago, Cruz is not unduly concerned about the lack of
recency.
AThe horse is ready to rock >n= roll,@ the conditioner told SCMP.
AThose two grass trials were strong. I think he is pretty tuned up.
Sure, he lacks racing fitness but that trial today was very good.
There is a 1400m Group 1 on the same day, but I think that is
too short for him.@
