Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote:
“Because the soul is progressive, it never quiterepeats itself, but in every act attempts theproduction of a new and fairer whole. This appearsin works both of the useful and the fine arts, if weemploy the popular distinction of works accordingto their aim, either at use or beauty. Thus, in ourfine arts, not imitation, but creation is the aim.”
Not imitation, but creation—that aptly describesthe goals of Loyola’s College of Music and FineArts. Visitors to Loyola have experiencedremarkable exhibits, performances, and scholarlypresentations for decades, always leaving ourcampus richer in spirit and cognizant that Loyola’saim is not just the creation of beauty, but theoverarching mission of transforming the world.
This year’s Montage season celebrates thecentennial of Loyola University New Orleans, andwe will bring the New Orleans and Gulf Coastcommunities some of the most distinguishedartists in the world, including: the world-renownedTokyo String Quartet; the Wynton MarsalisQuintet, featuring Victor Goins ’84; LPO maestroPhilippe Entremont; pianist Fr. Séan Dugan ’77;and former Loyola student Brian Blade.
The season will also showcase our typically richslate of performances by the major studentensembles, as well as an equally distinguishedgroup of Loyola faculty members, in addition totwo performances of Bernstein’s Candide byLoyola’s Opera Theatre.
Masterclasses this season will include WyntonMarsalis, Yo-Yo Ma, Samuel Ramey, Greer Grimsley’76, the Jerusalem String Quartet, and many others.
Please join us again this year. I look forward toseeing you at Montage!
Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D.
Dean, College of Music and Fine Arts
David P. Swanzy Distinguished Professor of Music
DEAR LOYOLAALUMNI,PARENTS,AND FRIENDS,
This year marks an important milestone in the life of the College of Music andFine Arts: with the approval of the faculty and the support of President KevinWm. Wildes, S.J., a School of Music—as well as Departments in Music IndustryStudies, Theatre Arts and Dance, and Art and Design—have been formed as unitswithin the college. These new designations more realistically describe Loyola’sprograms in the arts. Since Katrina, the college has experienced unprecedentedgrowth—from 200 undergraduate majors in 2000 to nearly 800 students today.
The college began as a separate entity: the New Orleans Conservatory of Musicand Dramatic Art was created in 1919 by Dr. Ernest Schuyten, who conducted the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. This conservatory became a part of Loyola University New Orleans in 1932. In 2006, the College of Musicincorporated departments in theatre and art, and was re-named the College of Music and Fine Arts. Throughout these manifestations, the college hasmaintained its personality and unique commitment to the arts—none of the other 27 Jesuit colleges or universities in the United States has a performing arts program of similar size or scope.
Loyola’s College of Music and Fine Arts also maintains collaborative relationshipswith the community of New Orleans through our sponsorship of the LoyolaSummer Jazz Band Camp, the Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp,Loyola’s KidsArt, and, beginning this year, the Southern Rep Theatre youthcamps. We also work collaboratively with many local arts organizations bysupporting the New Orleans Keyboard Festival, the Metropolitan OperaAuditions, and for the first time in 2012, the Schmidt Vocal Competition.
FATHER JAMES C. CARTER, S.J., hasalways been an avid supporter of the arts, particularly of Loyola’s College of Musicand Fine Arts. During his tenure asuniversity president, Fr. Carter was anoutspoken proponent of arts educationand demonstrated time and time again hiscommitment to Loyola’s unique tradition ofexcellence in this field. With the help of hisdynamic leadership, we were able toincrease the number and size of ourscholarships to attract new students and
gained additional funds to enhance our programs. Most importantly, Fr. Carter has been, and continues to be, one of the most effective and valued friends of the college—hispresence at our events and close relationship with our community of patrons has beeninvaluable. Fr. Carter’s ongoing dedication to the arts at Loyola has been essential to ourcontinued success. Our award-winning faculty string quartet bears his name proudly, andwe are grateful for all that he continues to do.
— ALLEN NISBET, Associate Professor of Music

JANUARY 2013
Leonard Bernstein’s Candide opened on Broadway as a musical in 1956. Based on Voltaire’s 1759 satiric novel of thesame name, the fast-paced comic operetta follows the adventures of the exiled—yet relentlessly optimistic—Candide, throughout the Old World and the New. Blindly following the advice of his tutor Pangloss, he careens through a seriesof wild adventures and astonishing coincidences to return home to his beloved Cunegonde, enlightened by a new, morerealistic philosophy of life. Bill Fabris (The Pirates of Penzance, 2010; The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein, 2012) returns asstage director/choreographer, and Carol Rausch once again assumes the role of music director/conductor.
