DIRECTIONS:By automobile, Hofstra can be reached easily by main east-west and north-south roads. Of the parkways, Meadowbrook Parkway is closest; it runs north and south between the Southern State Parkway and Northern State Parkway. Leave Meadowbrook Parkway at exit M4 (Hempstead Turnpike, West); Hofstra is less than a mile to the west.

Student Center Theater, North Campus:On Hempstead Turnpike, turn right at traffic light before second pedestrian bridge onto North Campus. At second STOP sign, bear left and park. Walk into the Mack Student Center (building with bell tower). Upon entering doors, make an immediate right and follow corridor to Student Center Theater.

Leo A. Guthart Cultural Center Theater, South Campus:On Hempstead Turnpike, turn right at traffic light before second pedestrian bridge onto North Campus. At second STOP sign, bear left and park. Walk into Mack Student Center and continue straight ahead. Cross over pedestrian bridge to base of Axinn Library. Leo A. Guthart Cultural Center Theater is on the left.

John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus:On Hempstead Turnpike, travel under second pedestrian bridge and make a U-turn at the next traffic light. Proceed 70 feet and make the first right turn onto South Campus. Go past two STOP signs and park. Building on the left is the John Cranford Adams Playhouse (lions in front of building).

President’s Message

Dear Friends,

This fall, the Hofstra Cultural Center has assembled an extraordinary schedule of performances, events, conferences, lectures and programs in celebration of Hofstra University’s 75th anniversary.

75 Years of Pride and Purpose is a yearlong celebration of Hofstra University’s unique history, our academic excellence, our service to the community, and the success of our faculty, our alumni and our students. Through social events, concerts and performances, through academic conferences that study the past while looking to the future, and through alumni and student events and initiatives, we will celebrate our great history and bring our community together.

The Hofstra Cultural Center has convened a unique series of academic conferences and symposia, and asked each of our schools and colleges to look at the history and future of their academic disciplines. Hofstra’s Axinn Library looks at how books and publishing have changed in Kapow! From Pulp Fiction to Google Books; Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences hosts a symposium on higher education with The Future of the Liberal Arts in the 21st Century; the School of Education, Health and Human Services, in two symposia, considers Public Health Challenges and Achievements: 1935-2010 and 75 Years: The Transformation of Public Schools; and the Frank G. Zarb School of Business looks forward in a comprehensive conference titled Social Responsibility in Business in the 21st Century. In the spring, Hofstra University School of Law, the School of Communication, the School for University Studies, Hofstra University Honors College and the School of Medicine will continue our in-depth study of Hofstra’s academic disciplines.

The Department of Drama and Dance joins us in the celebration of 75 years with stagings of Intimations for Saxophone, Cabaret, and Awake and Sing, and the Music Department, Hofstra Entertainment and the Hofstra University Museum also present performances and exhibits in celebration of our University’s history.

Even with the incredible calendar of events in celebration of our 75th anniversary, our academic and student divisions as well as the Hofstra Cultural Center still offer a wealth of other public lectures, workshops and performances, designed to educate, engage and entertain you. From the Kalikow Center and the National Center for Suburban Studies’ look at the 2010 elections, to the International Scene and IDEAS lectures, to the Astman International Concert Series and the Irish Studies, Italian American Experience and Issues in Judaism Lecture Series, to the Day of Dialogue and the Italian Experience Festival, there is something for our entire community this fall.

Hofstra Cultural Center

The Hofstra Cultural Center is an internationally renowned organization that includes a conference and symposium component, a music program, and the publication of the proceedings of its conferences and symposia.

It plans and coordinates conferences and symposia in the fields of humanities, business, law, and the sciences to promote the University as an international arena of scholarly thought and to foster Long Island as a cultural entity. The activities of the Hofstra Cultural Center augment the offerings of the academic departments of the University.

The conference and symposium component develops educational programs related to the cultural and interdisciplinary experience of students, faculty, staff, alumni and international scholars. The Hofstra Cultural Center has sponsored more than 130 conferences and symposia and has won international recognition for its Presidential Conference Series. Conferences, lectures, theater performances, and concerts are open to members of the Hofstra family and the community at large.

In celebration of Hofstra University’s 75th anniversary, the Hofstra Cultural Center is presenting several special events throughout the anniversary year by inviting outstanding artists and scholars back to our campus.

Among these special guests is internationally famous pianist and Chopin specialist Byron Janis. Regarded as one of the world’s greatest concert pianists, Mr. Janis will give a lecture/performance/video presentation titled A Voyage With Byron Janis – Celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Frédéric Chopin.

With words, music and video clips, we will be taken on a special journey through Chopin’s life. Mr. Janis will be performing on a Steinway concert grand provided by Steinway & Sons. This event is scheduled for Sunday, October 24. Details and ticket information can be found on page 23 of this calendar.

In the early 1990s, Dr. Douglas Brinkley was a member of Hofstra University’s Department of History faculty. Dr. Brinkley taught the American Odyssey course, in which he and his students traveled across the United States in the “Majic Bus,” a classroom on wheels. In 1994 he published a book based on his experiences, The Majic Bus: An American Odyssey, which chronicled the teaching of this innovative on-the-road class. Dr. Brinkley’s “Majic Bus” served as a model for C-SPAN’s Yellow School Bus.

Douglas Brinkley currently is a professor of history at Rice University. He is a renowned presidential historian, biographer and a highly published author of many articles and books. His most recent visit to Hofstra University was in 2005 for the Hofstra Cultural Center’s Presidential Conference on William Jefferson Clinton. Details on Dr. Brinkley’s return to Hofstra for a spring 2011 keynote address will be announced in the near future.

Did you know …The name Hofstra is from a district near the village of Grouw, which was

called the Hofland. An estate in this area called Hoflandstra-estate was

where an early ancestor of William Hofstra was born. The prefix "hof"

in the Frisian language means courtyard or farm, and the suffix "stra"

means "from." Before the 18th century, the people of this area were called

Hoflandstra, which was then shortened to the present, Hofstra.

Did you know …The Hofstra Home - The Hofstras bought the land for their home in 1903

in Hempstead, New York. The estate was approximately 15 acres and was

bordered by Fulton Avenue, a tree-lined thoroughfare that took them to

the heart of Hempstead. Large estates and farms lay north and south of

Did you know …Hofstra Trustee Dr. Rufus Smith and Dutch-born Hofstra art professor

Constant van de Wall created the University seal, which was adopted in

December 1937. The seal’s insignia is derived from the official seal of the

reigning house of the Netherlands, the House of Orange, and is used with

the permission of the Crown.

At the bottom of the seal appear the words “Je maintiendray,” meaning

“I stand steadfast” or “I shall stand fast,” as they do on the 1,000-year-

old coat of arms of the Orange-Nassau family. The motto and seal

are reflections of the Dutch heritage of both Long Island and

William S. Hofstra, for whom the University was named.
