Today, we’re going to look at some important verbs connected with money and how they are used.

SPEND AND SAVE You spend money when you buy things.

I spend 100 Euros on food every week. The question is usually with “How much”

How much do you spend on food? How much do you spend at weekends?

It is an irregular verb. I spent 60 Euros last weekend.

You save money when you don’t spend it but keep it for something. I’m saving for my holiday.

The noun is savings. Do you have any savings? Yes, I have some savings in

the bank.

BORROW AND LEND You borrow money when you have to ask someone for money that you don’t have.

I borrowed 10 Euros from my brother. When you borrow money from a bank, it is

called a loan. I got a loan to buy a car. A loan for a house is called a mortgage.

Lend is the opposite of borrow. If you give someone money that they will pay back. Banks do not lend money these days.

It is an irregular verb. I lent my brother 10 Euros last week. (spent and

lent have similar pronunciation)

DEPOSIT AND WITHDRAW

You deposit money by putting it in the bank.

I deposited my birthday money in my bank account.

Withdraw is when you take money out of your account. I have to withdraw some money from the cash

machine. Withdraw is an irregular verb

I withdrew all my money from my account. I have withdrawn all my money.

The noun is withdrawal.

INVEST AND WASTE You invest money to make more money. You can invest in different things.

I invested my money in shares on the stock market. Shares are parts of a company and the stock market

is where you buy and sell shares, e.g. The FT Stock Exchange or Wall Street.

I have invested my money in property because it is a safe investment.

Waste is when you use your money for no good reason. I wasted a lot of money at the fair.

In English there is a saying: Waste not, want not! If you don’t waste money, you will not want for anything

or lack for anything.

EARN/WIN AND LOSE

When you work, you earn money but when you get money in a lottery or in the casino you win it. They are both irregular verbs. I earnt 2000 euros last month. 2000 euros is your salary. I have never won the lottery. However, once I

won a writing competition at school. Lose has two meanings.

I lost the competition = the opposite of win I lost money on my investment. = the opposite

of earn.
