LAUNCHING SEASON 18We are excited to welcome you back to our 18th season. It was an unusually hot summer, and we hope that you found some exciting escapes.

In June we escaped to Miami for the important Dance/USA conference, where we saw over 20 different dance companies from the region, including the wonderful Miami City Ballet. We also spent a week on the east coast, highlighted by a visit to Jacob’s Pillow, the oldest dance festival in the US.

This summer we attended four street fairs, and we were delighted to see many of you stop by. You’ll notice that we have added two pages to the program, focusing on White Bird’s community and fundraising activities. For White Bird, our involvement in Portland’s diverse communities is as important as what we bring to the stage each year. These pages offer us a great opportunity to show you the schools, community centers and neighborhoods White Bird has visited in recent months.

Getting back to tonight, over the span of 10 days, you’ll find us at three different venues. First, MOMIX returns to the Newmark Theatre with a brand new production Alchemia, with its virtuosic shape-shifting dancers conjuring up powerful images of earth, air, fire and water.

The following Wednesday, October 14, at the Schnitzer marks the return of Twyla Tharp, renowned for her incomparable contributions to ballet, modern dance, Broadway and film. She has assembled a brand new ensemble of gifted dancers who will perform an intensely musical evening of all new work. We pre-sented Twyla’s company back in 2003, and 12 years later we are thrilled to welcome her back.

Uncaged opens the next day, Oct. 15 at Lincoln Hall, with the Portland debut of L-E-V, the creation of Sharon Eyal, former house choreographer with Israel’s Batsheva, and Gai Behar. Many of you experi-enced Sharon’s distinctive work when we presented Hubbard Street Dance Chicago in 2013 and NDT2 last season. Sharon’s outstanding dancers will perform two sensual and fascinating works Sara and Killer Pig.

We value your feedback. Please don’t hesitate to chat with us and our staff during intermission and af-ter the show. We would love to hear your thoughts. We are already starting to think about our 19th year, and would welcome any suggestions you might have, whether old friends as well as new companies you would like us to be aware of.

alchemiaDIRECTOR’S NOTEAlchemy is an ancient art, Egyptian in origin (the name itself is Arabic). For me, it is an aspirational art, more about the process than the product — the process itself is the philosopher’s stone, involving creative stimulation of the elements of nature, or in my case, of dance theater: fire and water, earth and air, male and female, the heavy and the light, the light and the dark, in opposition and in union (the climax that alchemists call conjunction). The show is linear only in the way that dreams are, but the lines below may help you follow the action. You may see (or imagine) an ancient city, an alchemical furnace, alembics for distillation, the torment of the metals (a stage in their transformation), the tablet of Hermes and the face of Horus, the mythical phoenix, the alchemical egg, the snake (the ourobouros) eating its tail…

Shamanic drums: the heartbeat of the alchemist,

a cry for light.

The element of fire, calling for its opposite.

Mercury’s serpent swims through the pillars

of the city of Atlantis as it sinks

beneath the waves into dancing magma.

The female escapes from the fire and becomes the fire.

ABOUT THE COMPANYMOMIX is a company of dancer-illusionists under the direction of Moses Pendleton. In addition to stage performances world-wide, MOMIX has worked in film and television, recently appearing in a national commercial for Hanes underwear and a Target ad that premiered during the airing of the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards. With performances on PBS’s “Dance in America” series, France’s Antenne II, and Italian RAI television, the company’s repertory has been broadcast to 55 countries. Joining the Montreal Symphony in the Rhombus Media film of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, winner of an International Emmy for Best Performing Arts Special, the company’s performance was distributed on laser disc by Decca Records. MOMIX was also featured in IMAGINE, one of the first 3-D IMAX films to be released in IMAX theaters world-wide. MOMIX dancers Cynthia Quinn and Karl Baumann, under Moses Pendleton’s direction, played the role of “Bluey” in the feature film FX2; and White Widow, co-choreographed by Moses Pendleton and Cynthia Quinn, was featured in Robert Altman’s movie, The Company. Commissioned by corporations such as Kohler, Fiat, and Mercedes Benz, MOMIX performed at Fiat’s month long 100th Anniversary Celebration in Torino, Italy, and Mercedes Benz’s International Auto Show in Frankfurt, Germany. Participating in the Homage a Picasso in Paris, the company was also selected to represent the US at the European Cultural Center at Delphi. With the support of the Scottsdale Cultural Council Scottsdale Center for the Arts in Scottsdale, Arizona, Mr. Pendleton created Bat Habits to celebrate the opening of the San Francisco Giants’ new spring training park in Scottsdale. This work served as the forerunner of Baseball and joins such acclaimed original productions as Lunar Sea, Opus Cactus, Orbit, Passion, and Botanica. With nothing more than light and shadow, props, the human body, and an epic imagination, MOMIX has astonished audiences on five continents for more than 35 years.

MOSES PENDLETON(Artistic Director)Moses has been one of America’s most innovative and widely performed choreographers and directors for over 40 years.

A co-founder of the ground-breaking Pilobolus Dance Theater in 1971, he formed his own company, MOMIX, in 1980. Mr. Pendleton has also worked extensively in film, TV, and opera and as a choreographer for ballet companies and special events.

Mr. Pendleton was born and raised on a dairy farm in Northern Vermont. His earliest experiences as a showman came from exhibiting his family’s dairy cows at the Caledonian County Fair. He received his BA in English Literature from Dartmouth College in 1971. Pilobolus began touring immediately and the group shot to fame in the 1970s, performing on Broadway under the sponsorship of Pierre Cardin, touring internationally, and appearing in PBS’s Dance in America and Great Performances series.

By the end of the decade, Mr. Pendleton had begun to work outside of Pilobolus, performing in and serving as principal choreographer for the Paris Opera’s Integrale Erik Satie in 1979 and choreographing the Closing Ceremonies of the Winter Olympics at Lake Placid in 1980. In 1981 he created MOMIX, which rapidly established an international reputation for highly inventive and often illusionistic choreography. The troupe has been touring steadily and is currently performing several programs internationally. The company has made numerous special programs for Italian and French television and received the Gold Medal of the Verona Festival in 1994.

Mr. Pendleton has also been active as a performer and choreographer for other companies. He has staged Picabia’s Dadaist ballet Relache for the Joffrey Ballet and Tutuguri, based on the writings of Artaud, for the Deutsch Opera Berlin. He created the role of the Fool for Yuri Lyubimov’s production of Mussorgsky’s Khovanschina at La Scala and choreographed Rameau’s Platee

for the U.S. Spoleto Festival in 1987. He contributed choreography to Lina Wertmuller’s production of Carmen at the Munich State Opera in 1993. More recently, he has choreographed new works for the Arizona Ballet and the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. He teamed up with Danny Ezralow and David Parsons to choreograph AEROS with the Romanian National Gymnastics Team.

His film and television work includes the feature film FX2 with Cynthia Quinn, Moses Pendleton Presents Moses Pendleton for ABC ARTS cable (winner of more than 10 international awards including a Cine Golden Eagle award and the US Film and Video Competition – now known as Sundance – Special Jury Award), and Pictures at an Exhibition with Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony, which received an International Emmy for Best Performing Arts Special in 1991. Mr. Pendleton has made music videos with Prince, Julian Lennon, and Cathy Dennis, among others.

Mr. Pendleton is an avid photographer with works presented in Rome, Milan, Florence, and Aspen. Images of his sunflower plantings at his home in northwestern Connecticut have been featured in numerous books and articles on gardening. He is the subject of the book Salto di Gravita by Lisavetta Scarbi, published in Italy in 1999. Mr. Pendleton was a recipient of the Connecticut Commission on the Arts Governor’s Award in 1998. He received the Positano Choreographic Award in 1999 and was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1977. He is a recipient of a 2002 American Choreography Award for his contributions to choreography for film and television. In May 2010, Mr. Pendleton received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts (HDFA) and delivered the keynote address to the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Mr. Pendleton choreographed the Doves of Peace, featuring Diana Vishneva, for the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. His photographs accompany the sixteen cantos of Phil Holland’s The Dance Must Follow (2015), which takes Mr. Pendleton’s own creative process as its subject.

CYNTHIA QUINN(Associate Director)Cynthia grew up in Southern California. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California at Riverside

and continued there as an Associate in Dance for five years. In 1988 she received the University’s Alumni Association’s “Outstanding Young Graduate Award.” As a member of Pilobolus, she performed on Broadway and throughout the United States, Europe, Canada, Israel and Japan. She collaborated on the choreography of Day Two, Elegy for the Moment, Mirage, What Grows in Huygens Window and Stabat Mater. Ms. Quinn began performing with MOMIX in 1983 and has since toured throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, South America and Japan. She has appeared in numerous television programs and music videos; and has assisted Moses Pendleton in the choreography of Pulcinella for the Ballet Nancy in France, Tutuguri for the Berlin Opera Ballet, Platee for the Spoleto Festival USA, Les Maries de la Tour Eiffel in New York, AccorDION for the Zurich-Vorbuhne Theatre and Carmen for the Munich State Opera. She has also appeared as a guest artist with the Ballet Theatre Francaise de Nancy, the Berlin Opera Ballet and the Munich State Opera, as well as international galas in Italy, France and Japan. Ms. Quinn made her film debut as “Bluey” (a role she shared with Karl Baumann) in “FX2.” She was a featured performer in the Emmy Award winning film “Pictures at an Exhibition” with the Montreal Symphony and has also appeared in a 3D IMAX film. Ms. Quinn is a board member of the Nutmeg Conservatory in Torrington, Connecticut and is on the advisory board of the Susan B. Anthony Project, also in Torrington, CT. Ms. Quinn was featured with Ru Paul and k.d. Lang for M.A.C. Cosmetics’ “Fashion Cares” benefits in Toronto and Vancouver. Ms. Quinn is co-choreographer of “White Widow” which is featured prominently in the new Robert Altman film, “The Company.” Ms. Quinn will also appear in the upcoming film “First Born”

with Elisabeth Shue. However, her most rewarding and challenging role is as a mother to her daughter, Quinn Elisabeth. Recently, Ms. Quinn assisted Mr. Pendleton choreographing the Doves of Peace, featuring Diana Vishneva, for the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

JERRICA BLANKENSHIP(Dancer)Jerrica is originally from Morgantown, WV where she trained in all disciplines of dance at

Kat & Company Dance Studio. In 2012, Jerrica graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA with a BFA in jazz dance performance. Growing up, Jerrica was a National Training Scholar with the American Ballet Theater where she had the privilege of being trained and mentored. She apprenticed with River North Chicago Dance Company, interned with Philadelphia’s Ballet X, and later toured with Brian Sanders’ JUNK until 2014. While in college, Jerrica was awarded the Elizabeth A. Pulaski Memorial Scholarship and Stella Moore Award of Excellence, both based on nominations by her professors. After graduation, Jerrica toured with the Radio City Christmas Spectacular as a dancer in the ensemble for the 2012– 2013 season. Jerrica joined MOMIX in 2013.

ANTHONY BOCCONI(Dancer)Anthony was born in Brooklyn, New York and began his dance training at the age of 13. The following year,

Anthony attended Fiorello H. La Guardia High School of Music, Art, and the Performing Arts. It was there he found his niche in modern dance, while studying Graham and Horton techniques. Upon graduation, Anthony continued his dance training in the Ailey/Fordham BFA program under the direction of Melanie Person. Anthony spent each summer at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Hubbar Street Dance Chicago, Nederlands Dans Theatre, and

Springboard Dance Montreal. Anthony graduated in 2013 and has since performed with Lydia Johnson Dance, The Metropolitan Opera, The Santa Fe Opera, and Lar Lubovitch Dance Company. Bocconi joined MOMIX in 2015.

AARON CANFIELD(Dancer/Dance Captain)Originally from Baltimore, MD, Aaron Canfield received his training from Southwest Virginia Ballet with Pedro Szalay, Post

School of Ballet with Terri Post, New Castle School of Dance with Sandra Smeltzer, Elie Lazar, Todd Allen and was a Trainee with the Richmond Ballet for 2 years. He has had the pleasure to be a guest artist with the Lexington Ballet, Una Dance Theatre, Community Dance Connection Theatre, Rockingham Ballet Theatre and Southwest Virginia Ballet. In addition to his dance training, Aaron has a 1st degree black belt in Taekwondo and was a national medalist for four consecutive years. Aaron joined MOMIX in 2010.

JENNIFER CHICHEPORTICHE(Dancer/Dance Captain)Jennifer was born in Bordeaux, France. She trained at the Academie Besso Ballet de Toulouse

and completed her studies in Paris with Dominique Khalfouni. At the age of 19, she joined the Jeune Ballet International de Rosella Hightower in Cannes, where she performed works from Prejlocaj, Balanchine, Renato Zanella, Jhon Butler, before becoming a member of Balletto Teatro Di Torino. While in the Italian company, she toured Europe and performed at the International Ballet Festival of Miami. In 2004, she moved to Scotland to dance with The Ensemblegroup. Jennifer continued her career in the UK with Opera North, doing the national tour of One Touch of Venus. While in Europe, she worked with internationally renowned choreographers such as Luca Vegetti, Carol Armitage, William Tuckett and Christopher Hampson. After

moving to NYC, she performed with Chamber Dance Project, International Ballet Theater, Lydia Johnson, New Generation Dance and Adam Miller Dance Company. She was part of the original MOMIX Botanica cast and was involved in the creation of MOMIX Alchemia. Most recently, Jennifer served as Assistant Choreographer to Matteo Levaggi at the New York Choreographic Institute. Jennifer joined MOMIX in 2007.

GREG DEARMOND(Dancer)Gregory DeArmond grew up in Southern California and trained at the Saddleback Dance Center, Golden State Ballet and

Ballet Pacifica. He graduated cum laude from the University of California, Irvine with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structures. He was honored as a William J. Gillespie Scholar and as a Gregory Osborne Memorial Scholar. After graduating Gregory joined the North Carolina Dance Theatre in 2010 and later participated in the National Choreographers Initiative, performing works by Jiri Kylian, William Forsythe, Twyla Tharp, Jiri Bubenicek, Jodie Gates, Dwight Rhoden, Peter Quanz, and George Balanchine. Gregory would like to thank everyone who has helped to make his career in dance possible. Gregory joined MOMIX in 2014.

STEVEN EZRA(Dancer/ Dance Captain)Born and raised in Long Island, Steven Ezra began training classical ballet at the ripe age of thirteen. His first steps

toward a professional career started at the Seiskaya Ballet School in Long Island. He then went off to the Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts in Connecticut and finished his training at the School of American Ballet in New York City. At eighteen years old his career path took a turn away from classical ballet when he joined MOMIX. Enamored with MOMIX since a young age, Steven Ezra proudly performed much of its grand repertoire all around the world, in over twenty countries, for more than ten years

and counting. He assisted in creating the full length evening performances of Lunar Sea, Botanica, and Alchemia, respectively, and has collaborated with MOMIX for many industrial shows as well as a commercial for Target. Most recently, he appeared as a finalist on America’s Got Talent with the shadow performance troupe Catapult, with which he collaborated since 2011. He continues working for both MOMIX and Catapult, as well as freelancing around NYC. In his spare time he enjoys practicing guitar and studying Italian. Gedetevi lo spettacolo! Steven joined MOMIX in 2003.

JENNA MARIE GRAVES(Dancer)Jenna began her dance training at Olga Kresin’s Ballet School and later attended the Philadelphia

High School for the Creative and Performing Arts. As a scholarship student, Jenna trained at the Ailey School and was a member of the Eleone Connections Dance Company. Jenna participated in a number of dance competitions including the Barcelona International Dance Competition, the Tanzolymp Danz Festival, and the Youth America Grand Prix where she was featured in the documentary “First Position”. Jenna was a member of Ailey II, Zest Collective, Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, and Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Jenna joined MOMIX in 2015.

VICTORIA ANDREA GUAJARDO(Dancer)Andrea Guajardo was born and raised in rural South Texas where she began her dance

training at Dancentre of Edinburg. At 17 she moved to New York when she accepted a scholarship to study at The Ailey School, and in 2013 she graduated from The Ailey School and Fordham University with a BFA in dance. Andrea has participated in professional intensive workshops including Monterrey, Mexico’s Escuela Superior de Danza, Ballet Austin, American Ballet Theater, and Dance New York International à Paris. She

has worked with and performed works by Manuel Vignoulle, Alexandre Prioa, Scott Rink, Troy Powell, Bradley Shelver, Carlos Dos Santos, Elisa Monte, Nathan Trice, Kazuko Hirabayashi, and Stephen Mills. Andrea’s professional work began performing with Kazuko Hirabayashi Dance Theater in 2011. Andrea apprenticed with MOMIX in 2013 and joined the company in 2014.

CATHERINE JAEGER(Dancer)Catherine, a native of Poughquag, NY, began her dance training at The Pinewood School of Dance and The Ridgefield

Conservatory of Dance where she received the Patricia Schuster Award for Dance Excellence. Catherine graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BFA in Contemporary Dance Performance from The Boston Conservatory. Catherine had the honor of performing the solo Frontier by Martha Graham, as well as works by Jose Limon, Alwin Nikolais, Thang Dao, Danielle Agami, Trisha Brown, and Ohad Naharin. Following graduation,Catherine worked with Nimbus Dance Works under the direction of Samuel Pott, and performed Asuka with Ballet Hispanico under the direction of Eduardo Vilaro. Most recently, she performed with French Armour by Brice Mousset and HackPolitik by Kate Ladenheim. Catherine joined MOMIX in 2012.

CHANGYONG SUNG(Dancer)Changyong was born and raised in South Korea. He began his training at Deokwon Arts High School. Upon graduation,

he attended the Korea National University of Arts, where he won numerous dance competitions including the Dong-a dance competition (2002), the Pacific Asia Fukuoka Modern Dance (2002), and the Seoul International Dance Competition (2009). In 2007 Changyong joined the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater Scholarship program where he remained until 2010. In 2011 he performed with Korea National Contemporary Dance. Changyong joined MOMIX in 2013.


THE COMPANYWOODROW F. DICK III(Production Manager) No, this name is not someone’s idea of something funny to slip into the program. Woodrow, or “Woody” as he is affectionately called, gave up being taken seriously long ago. You won’t believe anything that is written here so why should he even bother to tell you about himself? He has worked on various productions, some big, most of them small. This would probably have been the bio that gave you that smug satisfaction of recognizing an obscure production that no one else you came with has seen. But really, what’s the point in listing all of that stuff and wasting space in this program when you still don’t believe there’s a guy out there named Woody Dick? Woody joined MOMIX in 2003.

JEFFREY MAIN(Production Stage Manager)is a graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts. Jeffrey also works as Production Director for Inner Splendor Media, a company producing uplifting media content. Jeffrey joined MOMIX in 2002.

JAMESON WILLEY(Technical Director) grew up in a theatre family in Connecticut and began working backstage at the ripe old age of seven. Jameson’s early passion led to a career in technical theatre, affording him the opportunity to work on productions across the state of Connecticut, including many at Torrington’s historic Warner Theatre. Jameson joined MOMIX in 2012.

CHRISTOPHER LUBIK(Stage Manager)is a graduate of the University of Connecticut Construction Campus with a BFA in Technical Theatre. His past lighting design credits include Cloud 9 (CRT), Albert Herring (UConn Music Dept.), and Be a Good Little Widow (UConn Department Series). He also worked as a master electrician for His Girl Friday (CRT), Hound of the Baskervilles, The Fantasticks, and Last of the Red Hot Lovers (New Harmony Theatre). In his spare time he is known

for dwelling in trees and aspires to be the next Nikola Tesla. Christopher joined MOMIX in 2015.

PHOEBE KATZIN (Costume Designer)has been designing and constructing dresses and costumes for over twenty years. After graduating from Endicott College’s fashion design program, she worked for Kitty Daly, building dance costumes and dressmaking. For several years she lived in New York making costumes for Kitty Leach, Greg Barnes, and Allison Conner, among others. For the past few years, she has been working for MOMIX and Pilobolus. Ms. Katzin lives in Connecticut with her three children and husband, James.

MICHAEL KORSCH(Lighting Designer)is a lighting and scenic designer based in Philadelphia, PA, where he earned his BA in theatre at Temple University. Michael has worked with numerous directors and choreographers, creating visual designs for dance and theatre throughout North and South America, Europe, Australia and Asia. He has been the resident lighting and scenic designer as well as technical director for Complexions Contemporary Ballet since 1998, the resident lighting designer for Ballet Arizona since 2001, and the

lighting and technical director for the Laguna Dance Festival since 2005. In addition to Alchemia for MOMIX, he has created designs for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Aspen/Santa Fe Ballet, BalletMet, BalletX, Carolina Ballet, Cleveland Play House, DanceBrazil, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Disney Creative Entertainment, English National Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, North Carolina Dance Theatre, Oakland Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Royal Danish Ballet, Sacramento Ballet, Staatsballett Berlin and Washington Ballet among others.

AMANDA BRAVERMAN(Global General Manager) holds an MBA from Boston University, in addition to dual Communications and Foreign Language degrees from the same institution, graduating with highest honors. Braverman comes from both entrepreneurial and corporate backgrounds, most recently in the Outdoor Industry, and has distinct experience in business management, global branding, and marketing with special focus on environmental and philanthropic endeavors. Amanda joined MOMIX in 2014.

JOHN SELYA trained at the School of American Ballet. Mr. Selya went on to join American Ballet Theatre, where he danced and choreographed. Following his departure

from A.B.T., Mr. Selya joined Twyla Tharp’s company. He created the role of Eddie in Ms. Tharp’s Tony Award winning Broadway musical Movin’ Out, which earned him numerous awards and nominations. Following Movin’ Out, Mr. Selya performed in other Broadway productions including Guys and Dolls and Ms. Tharp’s Come Fly Away. He directed and starred in the national tour of Come Fly Away and in 2013, he staged the work for the Royal Danish Ballet where it became an audience favorite and broke box office records. In addition to the world’s stages, Mr. Selya’s dancing can also be seen in movies such as Woody Allen’s Everyone Says I Love You, Julie Taymore’s Across the Universe and John Turturro’s Romance and Cigarettes. Mr. Selya is a recipient of a fellowship at New York University's Center for Ballet and the Arts in the fall of 2015.

TWYLA THARPCHOREOGRAPHER/DIRECTORSince graduating from Barnard College in 1963, Twyla Tharp has choreographed more than one hundred sixty works: one hundred twenty-nine dances, twelve television specials, six Hollywood movies, four full-length ballets, four Broadway shows and two figure skating routines. She received one Tony Award, two Emmy Awards, nineteen honorary doctorates, the Vietnam Veterans of America President’s Award, the 2004 National Medal of the Arts, the 2008 Jerome

Robbins Prize, and a 2008 Kennedy Center Honor. Her many grants include the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society and an Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

In 1992, Ms. Tharp published her autobiography PUSH COMES TO SHOVE. She went on to write THE CREATIVE HABIT: Learn it and Use it for Life, followed by THE COLLABORATIVE HABIT: Life Lessons for Working Together. She is currently working on a fourth book. Today, Ms. Tharp continues to create.

RIKA OKAMOTO, originally from Japan, moved to United States in 1988 and began dancing with the Martha Graham Dance Company, where she met Twyla Tharp.

Okamoto first danced for Tharp in 1993. She was an original cast member in Tharp’s Broadway Musicals Movin’ Out and Come Fly Away. Currently she teaches Tharp’s Technique class and Repertory, and assists in the development of Tharp education programs. She has been a guest Tharp teacher/ballet master at many colleges and institutions worldwide. Okamoto has also worked for various productions with many choreographers, including Maryl Tankard and Pichon Baldin for Disney’s Broadway Musical Tarzan, Robert Wilson, Mark Morris, Daniel Ezralow, Jessica Lang, Buglisi/Foreman, as well as her teachers — Kazuko Hirabayashi, Pearl Lang, and Yuriko. She appeared in numerous commercials, TVs, and films, including the film Across The Universe directed by Julie Taymor. She was chosen by Steven Spielberg to play the title role for his pre-production project.

MATTHEW DIBBLE was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England, and began his training at the Royal Ballet School. After five years with the Royal Ballet, Dibble became a

founding member of K Ballet in Japan, and in 2001 he joined Twyla Tharp Dance. He later danced a Principal role (James) on the Movin’ Out tour and created the role of Chanos in Come Fly Away on Broadway, both choreographed and directed by Twyla Tharp. Dibble has also danced for Scottish Ballet, Matthew Bourne, Roland Petit, Christopher Wheeldon and Benjamin Millepied. Today he dances and sets works for Twyla Tharp all around the world.

RON TODOROWSKI is originally from Pittsburgh, PA and has had a diverse career in concert, musical theater and commercial dance. He has been a member of Complexions

Contemporary Ballet, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, The Parsons Dance Company, Mia Michaels “RAW” and has guested for many others. He was most recently part of the original cast of Finding Neverland on Broadway. Other Broadway credits include Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away, The Times They Are A Changin’ and Movin’ Out along with Wicked, Guys and Dolls and Footloose. He starred in London’s West End production and first national tour of Movin’ Out where he received a Helen Hayes Award for Best Actor in a musical. Off Broadway and other theater credits include Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party, Chess for the Actor’s Fund with Josh Groban, Barry Manilow’s Copacabana, Spirit and Cinderella. Some television and film credits include SNL, The Today Show, Good Morning America, The View, the Tony Awards, the VMA’s and the feature film Winter’s Tale. He has choreographed original work for Wayne State University, BC Beat in NYC and worked as Assistant Choreographer for Seven Brides for Seven Brothers at the Lyric Theater in Oklahoma City as well as Celine Dion’s A New Day in Las Vegas. He recently shot a music video for Nate Ruess’s new single, “A-Ha.” Thanks to family, Ryan and Twyla for this incredible opportunity.

DANIEL BAKER was born in Newcastle, Australia. He studied at the School of American Ballet the official school of the New York City Ballet. He later went on to become a

soloist in the Miami City Ballet and danced for the San Francisco Ballet. Baker has performed works by Tharp, Balanchine, Cranko, Forsythe, Morris, Neumeier, Ratmansky, Robbins, Taylor, Tudor and Wheeldon. Baker was a finalist on the hit show So You Think Can Dance and has danced alongside the Rockettes at the Radio City Music Hall. Baker has appeared in two PBS Great Performance Specials and performed Tharp’s Movin Out’ at the 2014 Gershwin Awards honoring Billy Joel. He received the New York Choreographic Fellowship Award and has choreographed for the New York Choreographic Institute in Lincoln Center.

RAMONA KELLEY is originally from California, where she began her training at Berkeley Ballet Theater under the direction of Sally Streets. She is a

Kelley first worked with Twyla Tharp when she danced the principal role ‘Betsy’ in the North American/Japanese tour of Tharp’s Come Fly Away. She has also worked with Cherylyn Lavagnino Dance, Oakland Ballet Company and The Phantom of the Opera 25th Anniversary Tour, among others.

NICHOLAS COPPULA was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he trained in tap and ballet from a young age. He later moved on to train with the Pittsburgh Ballet

Theatre School, American Ballet Theatre, and at the Chautauqua Institute with North Carolina Dance Theatre. After high school he joined Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre for eight years. During this time he performed soloist and principal roles in Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Jorden Morris’s Moulin Rouge, George Balanchine’s Serenade, and Twyla Tharp’s In the Upper Room and Nine Sinatra Songs. Mr. Coppula now lives in New York City with his wife and partner Eva Trapp where they work with the Twyla Tharp Dance Foundation.

Born in Kentucky, EVA TRAPP started her professional training with Michigan Ballet Theatre and Pittsburgh Ballet School. She began her career with Ohio Ballet

where she danced for four seasons. She then went to dance for eight seasons with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre as a soloist. Trapp had the honor of being the first ballerina from an American company to perform Blanche in John Neumeier’s A Streetcar Named Desire. Currently Ms. Trapp resides in New York

SAVANNAH LOWERY was born in Largo, Florida. She began dancing at the age of three under the direction of Judith Lee Johnson at The Judith Lee Johnson

Studio of Dance. At age 14, Lowery moved to New York City to attend the School of American Ballet. After two years of devout training from Balanchine experts, Kay Mazzo, Suki Schorer and Suzy Pillare, she was offered an apprenticeship with the New York City Ballet. In October 2002, Lowery officially joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet and in December 2007 was promoted to the rank of soloist after her performance as the Dewdrop in Balanchine’s The Nutcracker — one of her favorite roles today. Ms. Lowery has had the privilege to work with many renowned choreographers including Christopher Wheeldon and Susan Stroman, and is thrilled to be working with the incomparable Twyla Tharp.

REED TANKERSLEY is a native of the San Francisco Bay Area where he began his dance training at the age of five. He attended The Juilliard School (2014) in

New York where he performed works by Merce Cunningham, Twyla Tharp, Pina Bausch, Murray Louis, and Alex Ketley. Tankersley has had the pleasure of working and performing internationally in works by Peter Chu, Gustavo Ramirez Sansano, and Johannes Weiland. In 2012 he performed at the Edinburgh International Festival with the Juilliard Ensemble Alexander Ekman’s Episode 31. Shortly after graduation he began working with Twyla Tharp as well as performing with other choreographers such as Jonah Bokaer, Jonathan Royse Windham, Cheryl Copeland, and Lilja Rúriksdóttir. Working with Twyla for the past year has truly been an honor and he is very excited to be a part of her 50th Anniversary Celebration.


THE COMPANY TWYLA THARP

KAITLYN GILLILAND began her dance training at the Minnesota Dance Theatre and continued her studies at the School of American Ballet. From 2006-2011, Gilliland

danced with the New York City Ballet, receiving the company’s 2009-2010 Janice Levin Dancer Award. She has since appeared with BalletNext, Ballet Collective, Ballet Tech, Emery LeCrone Dance, Intermezzo Dance Company, JV Squad — Designated Movement, New Chamber Ballet, Pontus Lidberg Dance, Trainor Dance, and Twyla Tharp. She graduated summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Columbia University in May 2015.

ERIC OTTO was born and raised in Westchester, New York. He began dancing at the age of seven with the School of American Ballet in New York City. He has danced

professionally with the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet and Ballet X. He was an original cast member of Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away (Sid u/s). In 2003, Mr. Otto was invited to join the cast of Movin’ Out (James u/s). He has most recently appeared on Broadway in The Phantom of the Opera. Mr. Otto has performed an extensive repertoire including ballets by Frederik Ashton, George Balanchine, John Cranko, Jiri Kylian, Kenneth MacMillan and Jerome Robbins. He has danced roles created for him by Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor, Matthew Neenan, Lynne Taylor-Corbett and Natalie Weir.

ARTISTIC STAFFSANTO LOQUASTO (Scenic and Costume Design) Santo is a designer for theatre, film, dance, and opera. He has received 3 Tony Awards and has been nominated

18 times. Loquasto has collaborated with Twyla Tharp since 1974 on numerous occasions including iconic works such as Push Comes to Shove, In the Upper Room, and Movin’ Out. He has collaborated with Woody Allen on 28 films including costume design for Zelig and production design for Radio Days and Bullets Over Broadway for which he received Academy Award nominations. Recent designs on Broadway include A Delicate Balance, Bullets Over Broadway, Fences, Wit, and The Assembled Parties. He received the Merritt Award for Excellence in Design and Collaboration in 2002, was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame in 2004, received the Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for the Arts in 2006, the Robert L.B. Tobin Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2007, and the Gaudium Award in 2013.

JAMES F. INGALLS (Lighting Designer) James was the stage manger and lighting supervisor for the Twyla Tharp Dance Foundation from 1978-1980. Since

becoming a lighting designer in 1980, his work has included designs for dance, ballet, opera, theatre and symphony concerts. He has designed Twyla Tharp’s Waiting at the Station for Pacific Northwest Ballet, Seattle. Recent design for ballet and dance includes The Sleeping Beauty, choreographed by Alexi Ratmansky [American Ballet

Theatre at Segerstrom Center/Costa Mesa, CA and Metropolitan Opera House/NYC], Celts, choreographed by Lila York [Boston Ballet], Sea Lark and Death and the Maiden [Paul Taylor Dance Company] and the 25th anniversary production of L’Allegro, il penseroso ed il moderato [Mark Morris Dance Group at the Teatro Real/Madrid and The New York State Theatre]. Recent opera includes Henry Purcell’s The Indian Queen [English National Opera/London, Teatro Real/Madrid and Opera Perm/Russia] and John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary [English National Opera/London], both directed by Peter Sellars. His recent work in theatre includes The DruidShakespeare, directed by Garry Hynes [Druid Theatre Company/Galway and Lincoln Center Festival/NYC], The Second Girl [Huntington Theatre Company/Boston], Long Day’s Journey Into Night [Oregon Shakespeare Festival], The Price [Mark Taper Forum/LA] and Carmen De Lavallade’s As I Remember It [Jacob’s Pillow/MA and US tour]. SARA (13 minutes) Sara is like a pearl in a treasure, box of jewels smell like ancient with the feeling of a new. The box cannot be opened all the way, her charm will fade. White pearl, transparent, leaking colors but always remains a pearl. Sarah is minimalist, gentle, feeling and sensitive, hard core and old fashion at the same time. There's a sense of restraint and taking advantage of the minimum and maximum. She is not allowing distance and get closer to the heart. She comes from there and leaves into the world like a cloud crumbles into dust of love.

INTERMISSION

KILLER PIG (45 minutes)As if describing the roots of the creative mythology of L-E-V and gives a glimpse into the place where the most temporary theme of the group started. Place of minimalist expression, intense honesty and uncompromising physicality. Also in this work, the collage of musician Ori Lichtik assimilated as an integral body part of the dance. The work feels like a gentle soul on the verge of collapse and the only instinct it got left is to kill her dearest and die.

ABOUT L-E-V

SINCE 2006, collaborators Sharon Eyal | Gai Behar have been a significant voice in the artistic community, creating a continuous stream of critically acclaimed original works for Batsheva and other eminent dance companies around the world. L-E-V is the culmination of years of momentum, choreographed by Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar, accompanied by the endlessly original music of Ori Lichtik, delivered by fiercely talented dancers that move with expressive precision.

L-E-V feeds off of emerging technologies and integrates them effortlessly and unobtrusively into cross-disciplinary staging that could be equally at home at a techno-club or opera house. L-E-V is the confluence of movement, music, lighting, fashion, art and technology—each uniquely expressive while emotionally entwined.

L-E-V embodies a pledge to move and engage a diverse spectrum of new audiences and collaborators. All culminating in the breaking ground of L-E-V in 2013.

SHARON EYALDancer & Choreographer Sharon Eyal was born in Jerusalem. She danced with the Batsheva Dance Company from 1990

until 2008 and began choreographing within the framework of the company’s Batsheva Dancers Create project.

Eyal served as Associate Artistic Director of Batsheva between 2003-2004, and House Choreographer of the company between 2005-2012. In 2009 Eyal began creating pieces for other dance companies in the world: Killer Pig (2009) and Corps de Walk (2011) for Carte Blanche Dance of Norway; Too Beaucoup (2011) for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Plafona (2012) for Tanzcompagnie Oldenburg, Germany. In 2013 Eyal launches L-E-V with her long-time collaborator Gai Behar. This October, they premiered Untitled Black in collaboration with the Goteborgs Operans Danskompani in Gothenburg, Sweden. Eyal is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2004 Ministry of Culture Award for young dance creators and the 2009 Landau Prize for the Performing Arts in the dance category. In 2008, she was named a Chosen Artist of the Israel Cultural Excellence Foundation.

GAI BEHARCo-creator As a party producer, Gai was taking a big part of Tel Aviv nightlife scene as well as a curator of multidisciplinary art

events from 1999 till 2005. Gai joined Sharon in co-creating Bertolina in 2005 and has collaborated on the creation of Sharon Eyal ever since.

ORI LICHTIK Sound Artist Ori Lichtik is a multifaceted musician, drummer and creative DJ. Since their first collaboration on Bertolina, Lichtik

has created alongside Gai and Sharon throughout the choreographic process,

reflecting off of the dancers’ movements, and as often inspiring and prompting them with the tone and pace of his percussive sounds and rhythms. The compositions result in precise sets that structure the works. Each live show is then improvised with fresh layers of digitally manipulated effects, creating a unique sound experience for every event. One of the founding fathers of the techno scene in Israel, he has created, produced and spined musical productions, techno raves and various other music and performance events since 1996. During the last decade Lichtik has taught and coordinated the DJ Department of Muzik, college for musical productions.

AVI YONA BUENO (BAMBI)LightingBambi began his career as a lighting designer for rock concerts. While living in London and touring throughout Europe he designed shows for jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Chick Corea and Nina Simone as well as popular artists including The Cure, Meatloaf, The Commodores and the Thompson Twins. Since his return to Israel, Bambi’s lighting has illuminated countless operas, musicals, stadium productions, television productions, museum installations and architectural projects as well as the Israeli Opera productions in Masada — ‘Nabucco’ (2010) and ‘Aida’ (2011). He is the resident lighting designer of several award-winning companies, including the Batsheva dance Company, where he has been collaborating on most of Ohad Naharin’s and Eyal / Behar’s productions. In the dance world, Bambi has lit productions for such renowned companies as the Cullberg Ballet, Carte Blanche, Nederlans Dans Theater, Paris Opera Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. He has been widely acclaimed for his contribution and impact on the field of lighting design in theater and has been honored with numerous awards.

DANCERS LÉO LÉRUS Born in Guadeloupe, 1980, he studied contemporary dance at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris, and then worked with a variety

of companies such as Skånes Dansteater (Sweden), Carte Blanche Company (Norway), Random Dance Company/Wayne Mc Gregor (England), Batsheva Dance Company (Israel), Winterguests/Alan Øyen (Norway). Léo is a co-founder of Maria Kong Dancers Company (Israel), where he also grew as a creator, and is participating in the project “Warriors in Silence” with Michael Getman and Roy Assaf, directed by Naomi Perlov.

GON BIRAN Born in Israel in 1991, Gon studied dance at the Democratic School in Hadera. He joined Batsheva Ensemble, 2008 until 2011, performing the works

of Ohad Naharin and Eyal | Behar, and partaking in their creation of Petrushka. In 2012, he was a guest artist with Oldenburg Dance Company in Germany for Eyal & Behar’s work, Plafona. He is a recipient of the 2007 Sharett Scholarship for achievement in choreography and modern dance.

DOUGLAS LETHEREN Born and raised in New Hampshire, USA. He studied at St. Paul’s School, the Conservatoire de Rennes, and the

Juilliard School, where he received his BFA in 2007. Doug has worked with Aszure Barton and as a guest artist with Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal, and was a member of Mikhail Baryshnikov’s Hell’s Kitchen Dance. REBECCA HYTTING Born in Huskvarna, Sweden in 1982, she graduated from Balettakademien, Stockholm. After finishing her studies

she danced in Kamuyot/Riksteatern and Carte Blanche Dance Company, Norway. She joined the Batsheva Ensemble in 2008 and the Batsheva Dance Company in 2011.

KEREN LURIE PARDES Keren Lurie Pardes was born in the USA in 1991. Went to the Arts High School in Jerusalem and graduate at the dance

training program directed by Naomi Perlov and Ofir Dagan at Bikurei Haitim. 2010–11 was a trainee at the Batsheva Ensemble and participated in a project by Idan Sharabi. Between 2011-13 was a member of the Batsheva Ensemble and took part in the works of Ohad Naharin and Sharon Eyal & Gai Behar in Lost Cause among others.

MARIKO KAKIZAKI Born in Japan in 1988. Trained in rhythmic gymnastics during childhood and started dancing at the age of 18. Joined

shun project 2010, and got a 1st prize at Korea International Modern Dance Competition. Took part in Batsheva dance company ensemble 2012–2014. Mariko create and performed her own pieces since 2009 and chosen for the Kagawa Prefecture Art Newcomer award in 2013. In 2014 she created and organized “Golem&Treseses” Japan tour. Her piece “Golem Couple” got a 3rd award at Jerusalem international dance week competition and “Golem Girls” has invited to HCMC international Dance Festival 2014.
