Tournament golf looks a little different this year, but that didn’t stop many of the best junior golfers in Montana from compet-ing in the MSGA State Junior Championship at Polson Bay Golf Course. One hundred twenty-four juniors battled it out for top honors in their age groups.

Traditionally, to compete in the state tournament, juniors have to place among the top four golfers in their division at their district qualifier. However, due to COVID-19, district qualifiers were cancelled this year, and the state tournament was open to all juniors.

Of course, there were a few modifications that needed to be made to honor the rec-ommendations for staying safe during the pandemic. JUNIORS ... from previous pagetied for second place after day one, both shot 77. Cora maintained her lead through the second round, and finished with a 10-stroke lead over second place. Marcella Mercer moved into second place with her second round score of 70,

and made an ace on hole #9 during her second round. Third place was claimed by Meredith Boos who matched her first round with another round of 77.

Isabella Johnson fired an 83 in the first round and led the Girls’ 14-15 division by five strokes over Kadence Fisher and Chloe Tanner. Consistency paid off for Isabella, and her second-round score of 83 was enough for her to remain at the top of her age group after the second day of play. Kadence improved on her first-round score of 88 by shooting a second-

round score of 81, which placed her in second. Addiley Lloyd followed her first-round score of 90 with an 84, and claimed third place.

In the Girls’ 13 & Under division, Kenzie Walsh took a commanding lead after her 77 in round one. She shot one higher in round two, for a total of 155. She was followed by Katie Lewis, who shot 167 total. Third place went to Mia Nicholas, who shot 187 overall.

On the boys’ side, Cameron Kahle placed in first for the Boys’ 16-18 division. Cam-eron’s total score of 143 was just one ahead of Carson Hackmann (144). Joe Opitz made an impressive comeback on day two, with the lowest nine-hole score in the tournament. His second-round score of 67 gave him third.

Tyler Avery won the Boys’ overall champi-onship, as well as the Boys’ 14-15 division. After shooting 70 in round one, Tyler was tied for first in his age group with Kade McDonough. Tyler’s second-round score of 71 was enough to move ahead of Kade. Kade took second in his age group, with a total score of 145, one stroke ahead of third. Zeke Boos took third with a total score of 146.

After day one, Cameron Hackmann led the Boys’ 13 & Under division by three strokes over Aubrey Kelley and Cooper Bourret. Aubrey shot a 69 in the second round, which propelled him into first place with a score of 142 overall. Cameron finished in second place with a total score of 145. Cooper finished with a score of 149 overall, and a third place finish. Full results can be found here.

Congrats to all of our juniors! And, a special thanks goes out to Polson Bay Golf Course, who graciously agreed to host the event less than 2 weeks ahead of the tournament. The original venue, Cottonwood Hills Golf Club in Bozeman, was changed due to growing COVID-19 cases in the county, but will host the event in 2021.

MSGA Scholarships AwardedCarla Berg, MSGA Board of Directors

The MSGA has announced the awarding of four scholarships to very deserving young men and young ladies who have graduated recently from high school. We are sorry for their abbreviated graduation and awards ceremonies. However, we are proud to make this announcement.

The scholarships are awarded to students that have been active in high school or junior golf, but are not based on their need or their ability. Rather, the review committee factors in their involvement in community, school, and faith activities, while achieving their high school diplomas.

We are pleased to award the following scholarships: Carrie Carpenter lead her Billings West High School golf team to a 2nd place state finish and was the individual Class AA cham-pion. She will be attending the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks while playing golf for the fighting Hawks.

Tristan Hanson helped his Hamilton High School to a 3rd place finish in Class A golf and will be joining the Rocky Mountain College Battlin’ Bears golf team.

Trey Kelley from Polson High School will be attending North-west Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho, with hopes of becoming a competitive member of the Nighthawks golf team.

Ashtyn Swigart captained the Custer County District High School girls golf team in Miles City all four of her high school years. She is headed to Spearfish, South Dakota, to play golf for Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets.

Congratulations to our MSGA Scholarship recipients!

MSGA Hall of Fame InducteesCarla Berg, MSGA Board of Directors

2020 Hall of FameWhen Cindy arrived in Montana, golf was already in her DNA, and giving back is part of that DNA. Cindy has played a very proactive role in Montana golf for all genders and ages. She earned a law degree and put it to good use. Having played golf at the UM Golf Course on the University campus during college, she and several others became a core group to help save the course when it came

under attack to be plowed under for development purposes. They were instrumental in preserving the course, but only after countless hours of research in the Mansfield Library archives, Board of Regents minutes, public meetings with UM and local officials, and legislative testifying... time well spent!

Cindy has served on the Women’s State Board championing Rules Education and Pace of Play, and gave legal advice concern-ing by-law revisions. Cindy considers one of her biggest contri-

butions as spearheading the effort to get the golf courses in Montana correctly rated by volunteers and by arranging the first USGA Course Rating seminar held in Helena to train these volunteers. In the early ‘90s, Sun Mountain spon-sored the return of the Match Play event in Montana and after the original direc-tor left, Cindy took over the position for several years.

Twenty-five years ago, outside the borders of Montana, Cindy started serving on the USGA Women’s Committee and Regional Affairs Committee and has worked many volunteer hours at USGA Championships across the country. During her tenure with the USGA, she helped get a few USGA golf grants. Most notable were monies for Silver Fox GC in St. Ignatius and the LPGA/Girl Scouts/Girls Golf program run by Lenny Robbins for 19 years. The value of friendship, faith, volunteerism, and golf are all very important attributes to Cindy. For what she has done and will continue doing for golf in Montana, Cindy is very deserv-ing of being inducted into the MSGA Hall of Fame.

2020 Paul Allen AwardDuring his tenure at Yellowstone Country Club, Paul Allen probably had many youngsters hanging around the clubhouse and feeling right at home. And how many 12-year-old kids would become excited to have the job of sweeping out the bag room twice a week? UGH! But Mark Hahn loved it. He loved being there and felt privileged to have the opportunity to work ... Continued next page

** JULY'S TRIP PRIZE is Portland Trailblazers Basketball **

The MSGA is proud to announce a new tournament option for men, the Men’s Senior Amateur Championship!  This tournament will be a stand-alone event, played in conjunction with the Men’s State Amateur Championship, on the same days and course, with 2020 as its inaugural year.

The Montana State Golf Association was one of the few Associations that did not have a Men’s Senior event, and with the Montana State Seniors Golf Associa-tion (MSSGA) having to cancel their tournament in 2020, the MSGA Tourna-ment Committee decided it was a good time to introduce this new event. The MSGA Senior Amateur differs from the popular MSSGA Seniors tourna-ment, and is not meant as a replacement.  The purpose of the tournament is to identify the top senior golfer in the state and crown that person as the MSGA Senior Amateur Champion for 2020.  It will have a much smaller field size (75), with play on just one course, instead of three.  The course length will be more challenging for competitive play.  And, when the MSSGA Seniors tournament returns next season, it could be a good compliment to that event. The 2020 Men’s Senior Am will be played on July 16-18 at Yellowstone CC in Billings.  The age limit for this event will be 55 years or older by the first day of play.  The maximum Handicap Index is 18.0. You must also be a legal resident of Montana and a current member of the Montana State Golf Association. The deadline to apply is July 9th. You can apply online (or download an applica-tion to mail) at www.msgagolf.org/apply-for-state-tournament.

New MSGA Men's Senior Amateur

HALL OF FAME ... from previous pagewith Paul. Mark did it all—cleaning carts and balls, picking up the range, and eventually graduated into the pro shop.

He learned the business end of being a Professional as well as how to deal with the membership and customers. Upon gradu-ation from Billings West High School, Mark headed out to New Orleans on a golf scholarship, but was reassured of summer employment every year with Paul.

Mark is well known around the Billings golf circuit, having also worked at The Briarwood and Yegen Golf Clubs. He has now been the head Professional at Exchange City Par 3 Golf Course for the past 20 years and is well loved. Mark exemplifies all that Paul Allen stood for and is very deserving to be honored with this award.

Golfer Needs To Know about the World Handicap

System.

Posting Scores for Handicap Purposes During COVID-19The expanded use of Most Likely Score (MLS) is temporarily in effect within the United States

• The number of strokes already taken on a hole (including penalty strokes) plus

• The number of strokes you would most likely require to complete it from that position

• This temporary measure is only in effect until the golf facility transitions to Phase 3 (New Normal) of Back2Golf guidelines

• Proper use of this procedure will not artificially lower your Handicap Index

Just ask yourself:

What would have happened more than 50% of the time under normal conditions?

For example:

A ball glances off the side of a raised hole liner while traveling quickly. It is appropriate to determine the ball would most likely NOT have been holed.

While many courses have turned to creative means to limit contact around the hole, you can still post acceptable scores under these conditions.
